Is your personality the result of the chronological place in your family? Psychologists have had theories on the issue of birth order for decades, and this week Tidbits studies up on their findings. Follow along and see if you agree with their conclusions! • Renowned Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler was a pioneer in the area of birth order in the early 1900s. He was one of the first to present theories that family placement affects personality and how individuals deal with life’s issues. He believed that parents tend to treat children differently based on their order of birth.

and might pressure them for success. Parents might push the child to carry out the dreams they had for themselves, and are often harder on firstborns. • Because first-borns often feel the need to be perfect in everything they do, they are usually well-organized, goal-oriented, and respectful of rules. First-borns tend to become people pleasers, ambitious, and aggressive. • First-borns dominate the list of Nobel Prize winners, National Merit scholars, and astronauts. A few famous first-borns are Winston Churchill, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Harry Truman. • When a second child arrives, the first-born often becomes the “helper.” This results in a desire to protect and lead, and they become nurturers and caretakers. • The behavior of a middle child is often the result of the fact that they have never been “in the spotlight.” Their older sibling seems to be forging ahead with achievements while the younger one is the “entertainer” of the family, making the middle-born feel upstaged, left out, and insecure. The middle child often tries hard to be different from the older sibling. Because they sometimes feel ignored, they branch out on their own, becoming mentally tough and independent. They develop good social skills as a result, and often turn to their peer group rather than family for support. • Adler believed that middle children are more cooperative because they’ve grown up sharing attention. This also makes them more flexible and diplomatic, skills that allow them to thrive in business. The middles are also frequently good at peacemaking and negotiating – they’re good at seeing both sides of an issue! Fifty-two CLIP AND SAVE

This is likely due to their feelings of excessive responsibility and setting unrealistic standards for themselves. They also become very discouraged by what they perceive as unmet expectations or even failures.

● It was noted Democratic politician Adlai Stevenson who made the following sage observation: “In America, anybody can be president. That’s one of the risks you take.” ● You might be surprised to learn that notorious FBI director J. Edgar Hoover at one time had presidential aspirations. He reportedly believed he would be able to defeat president Franklin D. The time of the new moon is only slightly less busy, however. ● The next time you’re drizzling honey on your biscuit, consider this tidbit: Bees must visit up to 2 million flowers just to produce a single pound of the sweetener. ● One might think that an event as momentous as the Wright Brothers’ first successful airplane flight in 1903 would have received widespread coverage in the media. One would be wrong. The only newspaper to carry an account of the historic flight was the Virginian Pilot, based in Norfolk. *** Thought for the Day: “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” -- Mark Twain (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

How to Safely Get Rid of Expired Medications

No Need to Report Income to VA

Every day my email box loads up with messages -- many of which contain questions from you, my dear EC readers. And if you’ve sent a message, you are aware by now that while I read my mail and keep it filed, I just do not ®have enough time in my days to answer every message personally. However, once each week I reach into that file and by Mary Hunt select questions I believe will have a wide appeal for readers. Dear Mary: What is the best way to dispose of expired medication and old household cleaners? I want to do this in a safe manner. -- Chris, Virginia

If you’re enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs health-care system, you no longer have to report your income. The VA will get that information themselves -- from the IRS and Social Security. Starting March 2014, you’ll only have to give your income information if you’re applying for the first time. After that, you’ll only need to fill out your renewal form for change of address, next of kin, phone number and so on, using VA Form 1010EZR, which is available online or at your local medical center. Per the news release, the VA will continue to provide no-cost care to “indigent veterans, veterans with catastrophic medical conditions, veterans with a disability rating of 50 percent or higher, or for conditions that are officially rated as ‘service-connected.’” The income limits for co-pays and prescriptions are all over the map, literally. Income threshold limits for a veteran and family of four can range from $46,440 in Washington County, Maine, to $101,200 in San Francisco, and from $30,200 in McDowell County, W.Va., to $64,000 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and all points (and amounts) in between. If your income is over the limit, you still might get help. Income Verification Office benefits case managers can help find reductions in your income. If that doesn’t happen, or if your income has gone up, you might be required to pay co-pays for the year they’re reviewing. (Unfortunately you might end up owing money back for previous year co-pays as the income information doesn’t get to them until July of the following year.) To get more information, go online to www. va.gov/healthbenefits/cost or call VA toll-free at 1-877-222-VETS (8387).

Dear Alma: Given your circumstances, I would advise against buying this extended warranty. Your Lexus is a well-made automobile. At 10,000 miles a year, your usage is relatively light. Statistically speaking, if you are careful to have the oil changed regularly, you will experience no breakdowns or mechanical difficulties that would be covered by the extended warranty. My advice is to cancel it. But don’t stop there. Go directly to your bank or credit union and open a savings account. Instruct them to transfer $200 from your regular account into your new savings account once each month. After all, if you can scrape together $200 every month to throw away on this warranty, you should be able to do the same, but for your own good. See this as a non-negotiable expense. Once it is an automatic transfer, you won’t miss the money so much. If you take my advice, I wager that at the end of 2018 you’ll be driving a trouble-free car and you’ll have at least $3,000 in savings, too -- or $9,600 if you make this $200 a month savings a regular habit. If by some fluke you do need to pay for a car repair, you’ll have the cash in your savings to cover the bill.

WARNING: Reading Tidbits is habit forming

Recently, we highlighted the focused attention a responsible breeder brings to the first five weeks of a dog’s life. But the work doesn’t stop at week five, and the benefits of perseverance last a lifetime. Cardigan Welsh Corgi breeders Steve and Kelly Porter believe that “from the moment puppies enter the world, they begin to learn and understand. We work to get newborn puppies to be confident and comfortable with their surroundings. The result is a firm foundation for training, which will ensure a happy, mentally healthy and eager-to learn-dog.” The Porters spend upward of 12 weeks “exposing every pup to as many textures and sounds and experiences with people, animals and objects as possible -- all in an effort to increase each puppy’s self-awareness and confidence.” The intelligence behind the Porters’ puppyrearing methods is born of their knowledge of the stages of a dog’s development. Equally important are their efforts to devote space and time to promote the individuality of each dog. This provides a gauge for how and when to introduce a pup to the many faces of the world at large. Every nuance of this process ultimately serves both the dog and his future owner. Responsible breeders make every effort to raise healthy, confident dogs. For most, the reward is in the journey, which ends not with the sale of a puppy but with the making of a perfect match. The créme de la créme of breeders don’t sell dogs; they interview people. They have more than a financial stake in their dogs. They have a heart investment. They have a bond. And they’re looking for an owner who will give “their” dog the love and attention he deserves -- and to which he’s become accustomed. Some dog lovers have strong ideas of where a person should get their dog. Many people who turn to a breeder have a specific reason for doing so. There’s a reason farmers love collies. There’s a reason hunters have a proclivity toward retrievers. There’s a reason K-9 units are almost exclusively staffed with German shepherds and search-and-rescue teams usually include a trusty hound dog. Some people want dogs for protection. Others need dogs for physical or psychological reasons. There are even those people for whom a certain type of dog is literally prescribed. The important thing is to know your options, and a good dog breeder is certainly one of them. So if you’re the proud owner of a golf course haunted by gophers, go and out and find the best Jack Russell terrier breeder around. You won’t regret it, and now you know what to look for. Woof!

Dog trainer Matthew “Uncle Matty” Margolis is the co-author of 18 books about dogs, a behaviorist, a popular radio and television guest, and the host of the PBS series “WOOF! It’s a Dog’s Life!” Read all of Uncle Matty’s columns at www.creators.com, and visit him at www.unclematty.com.

results. However, as with any surgery, there is never a guarantee of success, and I have seen several men get worse after TURP, even though most get better. Age in and of itself does not necessarily preclude surgery. However, a history of stroke does make surgery a bit more risky. I don’t recommend surgery lightly, and since you haven’t reported giving finasteride or dutasteride a chance, either alone or in combination, I would recommend a good trial of those before contemplating surgery. The booklet on prostate enlargement and prostate cancer deals with these common male problems in detail. ROACH: My husband has numerous skin tags under both arms. Now he’s starting to get them around his neck and on his eyelids. We’ve been told to tie a string around them, or a dermatologist he saw told him to get a good pair of cuticle scissors and cut them off, but there’s way too many to do that. had no choice but to step in and help financially and to take care of them. They are concerned about whether they have enough energy and money to keep this up. It’s a tragic situation. It seems we’re hearing more stories lately about grandparents having to rescue their adult kids and their families. Is this something that is becoming more common?

Spouses: Know Your Financials!

A:

Q:

My husband has always handled our finances, and that’s fine with me. But he is now nearing 80 with failing health and it frightens me to realize I am completely unprepared to take over should he no longer be capable. I hesitate to bring this subject up to him, but I think there are things I really should know. How should I do this?

A:

Open up that money talk now! Ask him to make a detailed list of all your assets and where they are located. You need to know what bills are due monthly, quarterly and annually, and where the records are kept. Be sure he lists all sources of your household income, when and how they are received, in what amounts and from whom. Make sure you know the location of all of your important tax records, financial documents, who is managing them and how they can be contacted. Are your wills, trusts, insurance, beneficiaries and other documents in order and current? What cash could be immediately accessed if needed? This is all need-to-know information you must have should you find yourself facing these responsibilities alone. Knowing in advance that you are capable of taking over if need be should be a relief to both of you. Don’t put off having this important talk with your husband any longer! * * *

The number of grandparents needed to help cope with their grandchildren is growing at an alarming rate. A recent study by the University of Chicago revealed that over the last 10 years, nearly 70 percent of grandparents have been needed to step in and help their children’s families in one way or another. Based on your neighbors’ situation, I assume you have already offered to help if you are able. Even small things like bringing them groceries, running errands and just letting them know you are there for them can help ease their load. Fortunately, taking care of grandchildren comes with many benefits and positive experiences. Often, we become closer to our grandchildren and can pass on our family stories and wisdom to them. Sometimes, they teach us some things! In these kinds of situations, we will never hear that these wonderful grandparents don’t have anything to do with their time! Birth Order (from page page 3) tend to be very close to their parents. • A recent study indicates that being raised with siblings makes for more healthy relationships later in life. The American Sociological Association says that the more siblings you have, the better your chance of a long and happy marriage, since you’ve developed skills in conflict negotiation and personality clashes. The research points to a reduction in the likelihood of divorce by 2% per sibling. Which child is the least likely to get married? Studies indicate that would be the only child. • More American families are opting to have only one child now than ever before. In 1970, 33% of families had only one child. That percentage is about 43% today. Perhaps part of the reason is the amount of money it requires to rear a child to his 18th birthday. That amount is now close to $300,000 -- and that high figure does not include saving for college! □ CLIP AND SAVE

Professional Golf Tips Deep Fairway Rough When you find yourself in deep fairway rough, it is tempting to take a longer iron or fairway wood and try to hit it as far as humanly possible. But the smarter and safer approach is to just get it back into the fairway and set yourself up for your next shot. So the next time you are in deep fairway rough, here are a few things to consider:
