The year 1911 brought the first electric waffle iron, invented by Thomas Stackbeck and marketed by General Electric.

Benedict Cumberbatch started out on the stage in London, which is no surprise given that he is the son of two actors, Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. He’s been earning screen credits for the past 20 years, but the British mystery series “Sherlock” was his breakout hit. Before then, he built up an impressive resume with small roles in U.S. films like “August: Osage Benedict Cumberbatch County,” starring in “Sherlock” Meryl Streep, and “12 Years a Slave,” starring Chiwetel Ejiofor.

After joining the Marvel Universe as Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch’s name is now above the title. He recently reprised the comic-book role in the blockbuster hit “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and will next star in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

Housebreaking is hands-down the Number One problem for dog owners.

Take this recent letter from a reader: “My Yorkie Randy urinates in my home, and I’m seriously at the point of giving him away.

We love him dearly, but I can’t have my home ruined. He has a doggy door that he uses, but I keep finding puddles in the house. Help! You are my last resort.”

Reads like the TV Guide log line for this week’s episode of “Desperate Housebreakers.”

What the writer fails to mention is that Randy is nine years old and never trained. That’s 3,285 days’ worth of Yorkie urine on the carpet -- which, in fact, is the impetus for the cry for help. She’s recarpeting the whole house and that’s not cheap.

“I’m not going to spend all this money on new carpet just to have Randy ruin it.”

Readers, take note: Most people will spend thousands on new carpeting and nothing on dog training. Why not put a little something into dog training and save thousands on carpeting? Just sayin'.

Housebreaking a dog should not break the bank. It requires a system and consistent adherence to that system. A reasonably intelligent person can housebreak a dog in three to seven days.

Here’s how: 1) Establish and adhere to a feed-water-walk schedule. This conditions your pup’s body to eliminate waste at specific times of the day and night, as determined by you -- so stick to the schedule.

2) Use proper confinement. Baby gates and wire crates work well to keep your dog comfortable and confined. Free rein of the house is not allowed during the housebreaking phase. You can’t correct a mistake if it’s happening in another room. You must catch him in the act.

3) Neutralize odors. If you don’t catch your pup in the act, all you can do is clean it up. This is where that effective odor neutralizer comes in.

‘Welfare’ for Disabled Kids with Wealthy Parents Q: I have a neighbor who is in his early 50s. He is a pilot for a major airline and makes pretty good money. He and his wife have several children, one of whom has Down syndrome. I have heard that this 21-year-old son is collecting about $2,000 per month in welfare benefits from Social Security. Don’t get me wrong; I would never want to trade places with these people. But I am just wondering how rich people qualify for welfare benefits.

And I’m also wondering why this kid is getting Social Security when his parents aren’t even close to Social Security age.

A: Let me set you straight on a number of points. First, your neighbor’s son is not getting Social Security. He is probably getting a Supplemental Security Income disability payment. Second, he is not receiving anywhere near $2,000 per month.

It might be as much as $840 but is probably closer to around $500 in monthly SSI payments.

Our country’s primary safety net for lowincome elderly and disabled people is the Supplemental Security Income program. SSI is managed by the Social Security Administration, but it is not paid for out of Social Security taxes. It is funded by general tax revenues. However, the fact that the SSA runs the program, coupled with a confusing name that causes folks to believe it is a supplemental Social Security payment, leads most people to think of SSI as a Social Security benefit. I can’t emphasize enough that SSI is NOT part of Social Security.

What SSI does is pay a small monthly stipend to folks over age 65 who are poor, and to disabled adults and children who are poor. While your neighbor’s son was under age 18, he would not have been eligible for SSI disability benefits.

That’s because the father’s income would have been taken into consideration, and it would have prevented the child from qualifying for what is in effect a welfare payment.

But once the child turns 18, he is considered a legal adult. And as such, the parent’s income is no longer taken into account when deciding his eligibility for SSI payments. So, assuming this 21-year-old young man doesn’t have any other income and doesn’t have much in the way of assets in his name, he would get a monthly SSI disability check. The amount of the check can vary from one state to another, but it is never much more than about $840 per month. And based on my knowledge of the intricacies of the SSI payment structure, my hunch is your neighbor’s son is getting closer to about $500.

I am not going to weigh in too heavily on the argument over whether the adult children of middle-class or even rich parents should qualify for SSI (i.e., welfare) benefits -- although I am inclined to believe that parents caring for severely disabled children should get some help from the government. But I can tell you that many people over the years have objected to these provisions of the law.

And I would like to share the true story of one of

Now, I normally would have been just fine with that. This man’s family had suffered a crippling tragedy, and I’m sure their medical and other bills were piling up. The other parts of the chair – the frame, cushioning, and upholstery – are not covered.

Carnival Glass Bowl Used on Holidays Q:

My mother received this purple carnival glass bowl around 1910. She gave it to me when I married in 1957. Marked on the bottom is an “N” in a circle and there is a line under it. The inside is smooth; the only pattern is on the outside. The bowl has three feet. It is in mint condition. My mother always used this dish ever y holiday to ser ve pickles and relishes. It is hard to believe it sur vived all these years.

Anything you can tell me about my dish will be appreciated.

Objects marked “Czechoslovakia” were made between 1918 and 1993. Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on Jan. 1, 1993. The history of the mark “Y B S” in a circle is rather murky. It appears on pieces made in several countries including Czechoslovakia, Germany, Italy and England. It is thought to be the mark of an importer or distributor. Interestingly, it has been known to be included with some marks by the Czechoslovakian Fischer and Mieg Factory.

The value of your porcelain bust would probably be $200 to $300. *** Q: I have a leather bound book titled “Know Thyself or Nature’s Secrets Revealed.”

It was published in 1911 by The S. A. Mullikin Co. in Marietta, Ohio. The book imparts information from the beginning of life to the end. There is also a chapter on how to mix prescriptions and advice on how to heal honeybee stings.
