I’ve been working with a 1-year-old Weimaraner. His owners started looking for a trainer after he did more than $12,000 worth of damage to two living room sofas. After.

When I visited their home for the first time, I walked into the living room and couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a supersized shredder had attacked the couches. They were more foam than furniture.

The owners described the problems they were having with their dog -- jumping, barking, chewing, stealing food, knocking over the kids and guests. The irony, of course, is that for a year they had dismissed the idea of dog training because they didn’t want to spend the money.

These folks were under the impression that their oversized pup would grow out of it soon. Two things about that: 1) Dogs mature around age two to two-and-a-half. 2) Puppies grow into -- not out of -- bad habits left unchecked.

They told me their beloved Weimaraner acted out when home alone because he was “angry” that they left him. I assured them he was not angry, and that it was much more likely that he had no reason to think they cared about the state of their house.

When a puppy is left alone with free rein of the house and no boundaries to speak of, how is he to know what’s what?

They explained their quandary: They can’t leave him outside in the yard because the neighbors complain about his constant barking. And they don’t feel comfortable leaving him in a crate inside because they worry that he’s bored and lonely.

Here comes the benefit of calling a professional: Options.

For the barking problem, I recommend the citronella collar as an effective training tool. When the dog barks, the collar emits a short burst of citronella spray. The dog dislikes the spray and stops barking. Eventually, he gets the idea that he can avoid the spray entirely by not barking. Your neighbors start sending you flowers instead of hate mail.

The crate is an effective tool to use while your puppy is growing up, being housebroken, adjusting to the house rules and undergoing training.

No puppy should have the run of the house, especially when home alone.

A crate should never be used as a punishment. Your dog’s crate should be a comfortable, safe, welcoming place that he enjoys. And it’s perfectly safe to leave him there for a few hours while you’re out. In fact, it’s probably the safest place for him.

Ultimately, though, training is the tool that will give you the degree of trust you want before you leave your dog alone in a house full of expensive -- or inexpensive -- furniture. Destruction is the No. 2 problem people have with their dogs. Training is the No. 1 way to eliminate it.

More Questions About Social Security Disability Benefits Q: I have been getting Social Security

disability benefits since 2010. I am coming up on my 62nd birthday and would like to know if I can file for regular Social Security and get higher retirement benefits. Also, I have a 14-year-old daughter who is currently getting benefits on my disability record. Will she get higher benefits, too?

A:

First of all, you are already getting “regular” Social Security. There is nothing irregular about Social Security disability benefits. I tell people to think of the Social Security disability program as an early retirement benefit that is simply paid to you before you reach retirement age because you have a disabling condition.

And in fact, a Social Security disability benefit pays the same rate as a full retirement age benefit. So, you definitely do not want to switch to a reduced retirement benefit at age 62.

When you reach your full retirement age, you will be automatically converted from the disability program to the retirement program. And because you are already being paid your full retirement rate, the money amount that both you and your daughter get will stay the same. So, the switchover will essentially be transparent to you.

What happens behind the scenes is that once you reach your FRA, your benefits will be funded out of the Social Security retirement trust fund instead of the disability fund.

I filed a claim for him to get “disabled adult child” benefits on my Social Security record, and it was recently turned down. Can you give us any insight into how and why a claim would be denied to someone who is ver y obviously disabled?

A: Well, once again, I have to start out with the same point made in the answer to the prior question. It is the inability to work that is the key to getting disability benefits. So, if someone works, that could indicate they do not meet the legal definition of disability for Social Security purposes.

I understand that your son isn’t working now. But in order to get “disabled adult child” benefits, you’d have to prove that your son was disabled before age 22. And you said he was working from the age of 16 on. So, his claim might have been denied because the records just didn’t show he was legally disabled before age 22.

Now please bear in mind that I’m just guessing why the claim was denied. You’d have to talk to someone at the Social Security Administration to learn more. And speaking of talking to someone at the SSA, you should definitely file an appeal if you disagree with the first decision you got.

And here is another thing to think about.

You said your son has been working since age 16.

Assuming he worked at jobs where Social Security taxes were withheld from his paycheck, he is probably eligible for Social Security disability benefits on his own record. And to get those benefits, you don’t have to prove he was disabled before age 22.

You just have to prove he is disabled now.

A: Well, before I do that, I’ve got to explain

something to you. The Social Security disability program is more about the inability to work than it is about your physical or mental impairments.

Or to put that another way, you don’t get disability benefits from Social Security because you have a disabling condition. You get benefits because you have a disabling condition that keeps you from working.

So, the fact that you have a full-time job is a pretty good indication that you don’t qualify for Social Security disability benefits. But if your conditions ever get to the point where you have to stop working, then you should file for disability benefits immediately. And if you do so, I suggest you spend 10 bucks and get my little Social Security guidebook called “Social Security -- Simple and Smart.”

One of the chapters in that book explains the disability program and offers tips on getting your disability application approved. You can get the book at Amazon and other booksellers.

Q: I am 66 and getting my Social Security. My wife is 60. We have a 25-year-old

A:

There are all kinds of so-called “work incentives” built into the Social Security disability program. In fact, there are so many, they fill up a 100-page booklet produced by the Social Security Administration that I have on my desk. So, the rules are just too complicated to cover in the space I have here.

In a nutshell, I can tell you that you generally get a 9-month “trial work period,” during which time you can make as much money as you want and still get your Social Security checks. After those 9 months, if you are still working and making more than about $1,350 per month, your benefits might stop.

But as I said, there is WAY more to this topic than that. I suggest you go to www.socialsecurity.gov and do a search for the pamphlet, “Working While Disabled: How We Can Help.” It’s a condensed version of that 100-page book I mentioned earlier.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: How effective is the shingles vaccine and what is the CDC recommendation for getting it? My older brother and sister, both in their fifties, got Covid a few months back followed by shingles. Do you know if there is a connection between these viruses, and would the shingles vaccine have protected them?

--Scared of Shingles Dear Scared: Great question! Many healthcare professionals across the country have been urging their older patients to get the shingles vaccine during the pandemic because getting Covid-19 can indeed increase your chances of developing shingles. And the more severe case of Covid you get, the greater your risk for shingles.

The reason for this is due to the fact that when you contract Covid-19 your immune system becomes compromised fighting off the virus. This in turn gives shingles – a virus that already exists in your body if you’ve previously had chickenpox – a chance to reactivate.

Here is what you should know about shingles, the shingles vaccine, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations.

In addition to the rash, about 20 to 25 percent of those who get shingles go on to develop severe nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN) that can last for months or even years. And in rare cases, shingles can also cause strokes, encephalitis, spinal cord damage and vision loss.

Shingles Vaccine The vaccine for shingles called Shingrix (see Shingrix.com) provides much better protection than the old shingles vaccine, Zostavax.

Because of this protection, the CDC recommends that everyone age 50 and older, receive the Shingrix vaccine, which is given in two doses, separated by two to six months.

Even if you’ve already had shingles, you still need these vaccinations because reoccurring cases are possible. The CDC also recommends that anyone previously vaccinated with Zostavax be revaccinated with Shingrix.

You should also know that Shingrix can cause some adverse side effects for some people, including muscle pain, fatigue, headache, fever and upset stomach.

Shingrix – which averages around $205 for both doses – is covered by most private health insurance plans including Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, but there may be a cost to Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Shinyou depending on your plan. This mark is on the bottom of a pitcher that we inherited. It belonged to my husband’s aunt, who died in England 10 years ago at the age of 90. Also included in the mark is the name “Rhead.” We were told his name is Frederick Rhead and he was an English ceramic artist. The pitcher is 7 inches tall and in mint condition. It is decorated with a tan-and bittersweet-colored, stylized design.

We would love to know the approximate age of the piece as well as its value.

Porcelain Condiment Set Serves as Family Heirloom Q: I have in my possession the porcelain set that is seen in the enclosed photo. The set consists of a tray, a covered sugar bowl with a matching porcelain spoon and two shakers. The round tray measures approximately 7 inches in diameter. They are all decorated with handpainted pink roses, green leaves and gold trim.

The set is in pristine condition. Each piece is marked with the words “Hand Painted -- Nippon -- M.” I did some research and learned that this mark indicates that the pieces were imported by the Morimura Brothers. There is a note in the sugar bowl that says the set belonged to my grandmother in the year 1919.

Any information you can give me about this set, its actual age and the value it might have will be appreciated.

A: Close, but no cigar! Your pitcher was made by Frederick Rhead’s daughter, Charlotte, around 1933 for Crown Ducal in England. Frederick was an accomplished English potter and designer, but was not associated with Crown Ducal. His daughter was one of their most talented designers, and her work is highly collectible today.

Your pitcher would probably be worth $300 to $500.

Nippon is the Japanese word for Japan and was used in marks on porcelain from 1891 to around 1920. The Morimura Brothers were distributors who exported porcelain from Japan to the United States. Your set is a condiment set and the bowl with spoon/ladle is for serving mustard. Toothpick holders were often included in these sets.

Style, design and the manufacturer’s mark are the basis for determining age. Based on that, your condiment set was made sometime between 1891 and 1910.

Similar sets are selling on the Internet at $75 to $125. ***

The ocean sunfish rids itself of parasites by showing up in kelp beds where cleaner fish hang out and pick off most of their unwanted hitchhikers. However, some of the parasites are too large for the cleaner fish to swallow. To get rid of these bigger ones, the sunfish swims to the surface and floats flat on its side, making a themselves a dinner plate for hovering seagulls, who eagerly remove the largest parasites with their beaks. The sunfish serve both as a base of operations for over 40 different species of parasites, and a din-din stop for hungry birds. □

Little attention is placed on the orientation of the feet, yet your swing’s balance may be in their balance. Foot orientation has a strong influence on the body’s ability to turn and shift weight during the swing.

Since the backswing and forward swing will have different speeds, forces, and directions, the foot placement may vary for each individual.

Your flexibility may play a large part in determining what position each foot will take.

Since the forward swing requires a complete rotation of the body toward the target and a majority of the weight on the left leg at the finish, the left foot is typically flared outward 10-40 degrees. The flaring of the foot allows the leg and the hip to unturn more freely in the follow through.

The backswing is attempting to control the body turn and weight shift, so the foot flare may be more minimal from 0-20 degrees.

Ben Hogan wrote several times that he preferred the right foot to be “square” while the left foot flared out a “quarter turn”. Many amateurs may allow a little flare with the right, then double that for the left foot.
