When I started training dogs more than 30 years ago, about ten percent of the calls I received were from people with aggressive dogs. Today, that percentage is approaching 90. And here’s one more:

Actually, this is my daughter-in-law and son’s dog, but I’ve read your information page about aggressive dogs, which she is. She has bitten at least twice, the most recent time being this past week -- and the victim was their own young son, my grandson. My daughter-in-law refuses to give the dog up or have it destroyed for exactly the reason you state on your info page: “It’s her first baby.” Our son is standing with his wife.

The rest of the family -- on both our daughter-in-law’s and our son’s sides -- have said they need to get rid of the dog and protect their son, put their son first. But they want to train the dog instead. Please help me try to reason with my children and prevent any further injury or death to my grandson.

“It’s her first baby” is a far more common feeling than you might realize, and I believe what it really means is at the root of this rising percentage.

“It’s her first baby” is just another way of saying the family dog is no different from the children and the parents, that the dog is no different from the humans. And this humanization of our dogs leads to emotional confusion on the part of grownups and psychological confusion on the part of dogs.

When you see your dog as no different from your child, it becomes difficult to prioritize appropriately and make decisions that promote the safety of your child. And from this clouded perspective, your expectations of your dog become unrealistic.

A dog is not a child and does not learn like a child. You can teach your child not to pinch people and have a realistic expectation that he will not pinch. Your dog’s animal instincts have a greater degree of control over his behavior than do you in certain situations. Games for Brain Training Did you know that cognitive brain training can keep our cognitive abilities functioning better for ten years? The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) is not a new study, but it bears looking at for what it offers seniors in terms of cognitive abilities.

The government-funded study followed 2,832 seniors with an average age of 73 after they completed ten training sessions and four booster sessions 11 and 35 months after the initial training.

Participants were divided into four groups: memory training, reasoning training, speed of processing training and a control group with no training. What the study aimed to look at was cognitive abilities and performance in everyday activities, and they collected updated data at the one, two, three, five and ten-year points in the study.

These are the types of fantasies that entertain and inspire me. Yet more and more, today’s consumers are less interested in antiques and more likely to prefer new furniture.

Of course, as a designer, I love what the latest and greatest furniture and interior design have to offer. Whenever I go to a trade furniture show, I am equally smitten with new designs that represent the way we live today. Once resistant to accept change, I am now open to newer designs.

These new beauties lack the history of antiques, but that’s OK, and that is the point of this column.

I confess that I am a bit of a snob. I always swoon when I see antiques that catch my eye, and my mind goes off wondering about the accurate period of a certain piece and whether it has a signature marking or specific provenance.

Sometimes, newer and less-expensive furnishings’ supporting roles are the perfect fit, allowing other pieces to resonate and shine in your room. Even if you decide to do it the other way around, playing up new furniture as your main pieces and incorporating antiques as accents, they can still define a room’s character. My advice is to mix, mix and mix. So don’t be a snob. Antiques aren’t snooty, and you shouldn’t be afraid to use them. You should embrace the things around you that make your house feel like your home and no one else’s.

Sometimes, You Just Can’t Win I’ll tell you this: Sometimes, you just can’t win. I’ve learned over the years that you have to have a pretty thick skin to be a Social Security columnist. And that’s because people will frequently misread something I write, or they will take something I said the wrong way, and then they let me have it by sending me an email chewing me out for my alleged misstatements.

For example, in a recent column, I wrote about the Social Security concerns of women who are or were married to bad husbands. OK, to be honest, I called them “jerks.” More than a few very upset men wrote to tell me that it takes two to tango! They told me about their wives or ex-wives who weren’t exactly paragons of womanly virtue and suggested I was being a “man-hating jerk” myself.

But in that prior column, I said I knew there had to be more than a few bad wives out there.

However, I also pointed out that when I get Social Security questions from a member of an unhappy couple, they always come from women married to a loser. Still, I got an earful from more than a few irate men. Sometimes, you just can’t win.

I also wrote a couple recent columns where I mentioned there might be advantages to taking benefits at full retirement age or even sooner. And sure enough, I heard from several financial planners who told me I am misleading my readers because they believe you should always wait until 70 to file for benefits. One guy even accused me of “leading senior citizens down the path to financial ruin!”

If you read those past columns, you’ll note that I gave reasoned arguments for taking benefits at age 70 and for starting them at full retirement age. Still, the “wait until 70” crowd blasted me all the same. Sometimes, you just can’t win!

And here’s a twist to that tale. Following that recent column, I also heard from financial planners who scolded me for not doing a good enough job of pushing full retirement age as the best course of action for soon-to-be retirees. In other words, two groups of people, reading the same column, came away with diametrically opposite opinions about what I said. Sometimes, you just can’t win.

One time I wrote a column explaining benefits available to women on a husband’s Social Security record. I got an email from a woman who told me she could never trust anything I wrote again because in that column, I failed to mention that a woman must be married for at least ten years to collect benefits.

But the column in question was addressed to women currently married to their husbands.

The ten-year rule applies only to divorced spouses.

I wrote back to the woman and told her that. And she said, “You still can’t be trusted.” Sometimes, you just can’t win!

Interestingly, that same column elicited a diatribe I got from a woman who yelled at me for using my column “to pander to married women.”

She told me she’s sick and tired of hearing women gripe because they aren’t getting enough in spousal benefits on a husband’s Social Security account. She told me, “These women need to get a life and learn to live on their own without the sup-

Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it.

CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives can be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small. 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent just one lung cancer death.

There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans, and sometimes an invasive procedure, to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did.

The small size of your nodule means the risk that this nodule is cancerous is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancerous is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You also should have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing.

The second concern is that current smokers who consider screening should receive intensive advice and help in quitting smoking. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains to be the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health. *** DEAR DR. Child’s Bowl Serves More Than Oatmeal Q: I bought the china child’s bowl seen in this photo at a yard sale and didn’t pay much for it. It is decorated with a boy and girl skating and measures 4 inches in diameter.

On the border are the word “Baby” and also a mushroom, a frog and blue flowers. It is in good condition, except for a small chip near the frog. Marked on the bottom are words in a circle that are too blurr y to read.

I would like to know if it has any value.

A: Children’s bowls and dishes are popular

collectibles. They were made in the late 1800s and early 1900s in both Europe and the United States.

Many were decorated with the ABCs, children and animals at play, or nursery rhymes. As a rule, the decorations were transfer prints rather than handpainted scenes. Because the mark is illegible, the manufacturer and the origin can’t be identified.

Your bowl was made in the early 1900s and would probably be worth $10 to $25.

The letters “EPCA” stand for Electro Plated Copper Alloy. That also means your set is silver plate rather than sterling silver. “Lancaster Rose” is the name of the pattern and the number “400” refers to the design.

Thumb Bridge Getting to a good position at the top of the swing is an orchestration of many different parts. Controlling the club’s movement and top position relies mostly on the hands and arms. Many top female players seem to have a beautiful support of the club, which can be seen temporarily in their transition to swing forward.
