It’s hard to believe that the cute little blond boy who outwitted two burglars in the blockbuster film “Home Alone” is now 39 years old. He was recently on the cover of “GQ” magazine, although in the interview he stated how much he disliked doing photoshoots.

“Mack,” as he’s now called, has slowly been easing back into acting. A couple years Macaulay Culkin ago, he played himself on a few episodes of “The Jim Gaffigan Show” and most recently generated a lot of critical acclaim in the independent film “Changeland,” written and directed by good friend Seth Green.

That film might be what got him noticed

by Ryan Murphy, the creator of “American Horror Story.” The next installment takes place in a seaside town and will star Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, along with Culkin. It’s set to air later this year on FX. ***

With a Spouse, Taking Your Social Security Early Might Be Better

I’m sure you’ve seen websites, or received mailers from financial planners, that entice you with come-on’s like this: “Learn the secrets to maximizing your Social Security benefits.” Or, “You may be losing tens of thousands of dollars if you don’t know this Social Security secret.”

If you open the website, or attend the seminar, here is the “secret” you will learn: delay taking your Social Security benefits until age 70. And the theory is that you will live long enough to make up for the money you lose by not starting your benefits sooner.

That’s probably good advice for lots of people. But there are still millions of senior citizens who, for a variety of reasons, choose to take their benefits earlier. For example, both my wife and I started our Social Security benefits at age 62. We were perfectly content doing that. We know that if we live until a ripe old age, we might end up coming out on the short end of the Social Security stick.

But we don’t care. We’ve been having too much fun for the past decade spending our reduced Social Security checks.

Besides the “eat, drink and be merry” types like me and my wife, there is another group of people who should seriously think about starting benefits earlier rather than later. And that is retirees who have a spouse potentially eligible for benefits on their record. Today’s questions and answers illustrate what I am talking about.

Q:

I am 66. I plan to delay starting my Social Security until I’m 70. My full retirement age benefit is $2,600. If I wait until 70, I’d get $3,432. My wife is 62. She wants to file for her Social Security now. She’s due a much smaller benefit. It would be about $787 if she files now. I say she should wait until I am 70 and she is 66 and then file on my record, because if she files for reduced benefits now, that reduction would carr y over to the spousal benefits she will eventually be due on my record. So, who is right?

Just How Effective Are Essential Oils?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a relative who sells one of the popular brands of essential oil products and related equipment.

She sends out many social network postings about the benefits of these products, including sharing postings from others who sell the products.

I do not purchase these for several reasons. I am sensitive to many airborne scents and have a scent-free home, but my primary concern is that she seems to be practicing medicine by claiming what I believe to be unproven health benefits. These are very costly and, at a minimum, harm is done by persuading people to spend a great deal of money for products that may not do what they are claimed to do. I am also concerned that families with young children seem to be using these products -- my relative has even sent some to her children’s school for use in the classroom.

Can you please comment on possible benefits/harm from these products? -- J.R. ANSWER: Essential oils from plants have been used to scent the air for millennia.

There are certainly many claims about purported health benefits, but there is little evidence to support their use for those purposes. Health claims for aromatherapy should be taken with skepticism. One exception is that several reviews have found that some aromatherapies can reduce anxiety levels, and possibly some symptoms of depression.

As I frequently note, however, the placebo effect is powerful, and if you expect that a treatment, such as aromatherapy, will help your symptoms, it very well may. As such, I have no objection to people who want to use them for mild symptoms. I do object when people forego

Harm from aromatherapy is generally limited to allergic or non-allergic irritation of the nose and skin. Essential oils are not to be taken internally, and even topical use can lead to problems, as they can be absorbed into the body directly through the skin. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Why are there two names for every drug? In a recent article, for example, you mention fluoxetine (Prozac) and bupropion (Wellbutrin). Clearly the name in parenthesis is the common name people use.

Why does the other name exist, and why is it used at all? This adds unnecessary complexity and confusion. For example, a nurse asked me about Efudex, and I didn’t know what she was referring to, as the label on the medication I had reads “fluorouracil.” -- C.P. ANSWER: Every drug has at least three names: a chemical name, a generic name and a brand name. The chemical names are so complex that nobody (but chemists) uses them. I prefer using generic names, since they are the same regardless of country, and generic names often give a clue to the type of medication. Generic names are lowercase.

Brand names (capitalized) are the ones most often known (drug companies often try to find easy-to-remember brand names and hardto-remember generic names), but not always.

In the example you gave, Efudex is one brand name (Adrucil and Carac are others), and fluorouracil (or 5-fluorouracil, often abbreviated 5-FU) is the generic name.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has trained 8,300 employees to serve as patient advocates. The Patient Advocate Tracking System Replacement (PATS-R) program is now up and running in all facilities around the country. It replaces the old Patient Representative System that had patient reps with limited powers. Now, after a lot of research into what is really needed, you’ll talk to one of the 8,300 medical staff who have been trained to get a faster resolution to your problem. Even better, this advocate can often solve your problem right then and there, without even asking anyone else.

And it’s not just your individual issue that gets noticed. The PATS-R program will track and spot problems that are reported by others at any medical facility. If there’s a trend at your facility or any other in the country, it will get attention across all the departments in all facilities. If you want to give a big thumbs-up to someone on the medical staff or about an experience you’ve had, that will be noticed as well.

The PATS-R program is one of the VA secretary’s priorities. The others are implementing the MISSION Act; hooking the VA up to civilian health care providers and pharmacies, as well as making timely payments to those; improving hiring, IT, procurement and financial transactions; and suicide prevention.

This is a photo of a small leatherbound book titled “The Globe Edition: The Works of William Shakespeare.” The book is about 7 inches high with gilt lettering on the spine, gilt on the edges of all the pages, 1,075 pages and text arranged in double columns.

The spine has 7 raised bands. The title is in the second band. The rest have a gold fleurde-lis motif. It was edited by William George Clark and William Aldis Wright and published

by MacMillan and Co. in London in 1867.

Despite a small amount of foxing on some of the pages, the book is in ver y good condition, and there are no inscriptions.

What can you tell me about my book and its histor y?

William Shakespeare wrote many of his plays and sonnets from 1585 to 1613. The Globe Edition was targeting a broad audience and they published several editions.

Your 1867 edition would probably have a value of $50 to $125. ***

I have enclosed the mark that is on a set of dishes that I inherited years ago. The set is a ser vice for eight and includes dinner plates, salad dishes, cereal bowls, cups, saucers, several ser ving pieces, a salt shaker and a pepper shaker. It was a wedding gift for my grandparents when they married in 1949.

Originally, there were more pieces, but some have been broken or lost over the years.

Vernon Kilns art director, Gale Turnbull, created the Organdie design. He was a native New Yorker who studied art in Paris and eventually traveled to California. Vernon Kilns produced a plethora of matching pieces and accessories that included, mixing bowls, covered butter dishes, divided serving bowls, individual casserole dishes, covered casseroles, water pitchers and tumblers. Vernonware was also available in two other plaid patterns: Homespun, which was decorated with light green, dark green and rust plaid designs, and Gingham, a pattern decorated with green and rust.

Divotology Do divots really tell golfers what happened in the swing to cause the shot to miss its target?

Unfortunately many players may read too much into the alignment of a divot, but sometimes in can be fairly accurate.

Most players who see a divot aligned left of where they thought they were aiming attribute it to an “over the top” or “outside to in” downswing path. That can be true, but also keep in mind that the swing works in an arc through impact, not just leading into the ball.

A straight shot in golf can still have a divot that curves or appears to aim slightly left of the target. The clubhead is simply on its “return arc” away from the target line.

It’s also possible for the hands to stop through impact in a way that alters the clubhead movement more sharply back to the inside. It’s what I would call “coming over the bottom”. The path may actually be fairly neutral, but the clubhead’s action creates a divot aligning more leftward.
