Tarnish is the result when sulfur in the air reacts with silver. If you have silver pieces that are very tarnished, you need to give them a good polish. Simichrome Polish and Hagerty Silversmith’s Spray Polish are highly regarded for fine silver care. Once polished, frequent use is the best way to prevent tarnish buildup.

Here are my house rules for how to clean silver (silver-plate or sterling) in the dishwasher:

Rule 1: Only solid flatware and pieces in the dishwasher. That means no pearl handles, items with glue joints or weighted/reinforced items.

Rule 2: Rinse off immediately after use.

Don’t let food sit on silver, as it may cause corrosion or pitting.

Rule 3: Don’t let the silver pieces touch any other type of metal, including stainless, which will leave marks that are very difficult to remove. You can put silver in the same dishwasher load as stainless, just in different flatware compartments. Never allow the two materials to come into direct contact.

Rule 4: When washing silver in the dishwasher, stick with the normal or delicate cycle, not heavy-duty scrubber or high-temp sanitizing-type options.

Rule 5: Do not use automatic dishwasher detergent that contains lemon, citrus or phosphates.

Now that the silver is clean, use it and enjoy it!

A big part of my job is talking to people about their dogs. Now more than ever, many of those conversations require me to interject for the sake of clarification: “Wait, are you talking about your human child or your dog child?”

Take for example this recent letter from a reader:

“My puppy is very possessive of me. I am the primary parent. I also have two other dogs, and anytime they come near me, he runs over, jumps on me and barks at them until they leave.

This also is starting to apply to people: My husband can’t come near me, and he recently nipped at my 3-year-old niece. I want to break him of this jealous behavior but don’t know how. My husband says to smack him, but doesn’t that just compound the issue? Other than this, he is a very good boy and an absolute joy to have around.”

Oh, maternal love! Its blindness knows no bounds.

If we took a poll and aimed it at the “parents” of aggressive dogs, asking why they live with a dangerous dog, the results would make for a hearty denial soup:

-- He doesn’t mean it.

-- We shouldn’t disturb him.

-- He doesn’t do it all the time.

-- He was provoked.

And the knee-jerk reaction when faced with a shy, fearful or aggressive dog is: Abuse! This dog’s been abused!

Sadly, that is sometimes true. But personality traits are sown in a number of ways, many having nothing to do with abuse. Improper socialization or a lack thereof, defective genetics and even simply being the runt of a litter can tip a dog’s personality toward the timid end of the spectrum.

a cruel human being caused the problem trait, a loving human being holds the power to reverse the effect. But all the love in the world is no match for the brute force of bad genes. Not even the love of a pet parent.

I recently talked with a young woman who just had a baby -- she’s highly educated and intelligent, with a very promising legal career ahead of her. She also lives with an aggressive dog and cannot bear the idea of losing him. I asked her what made the protection of her dog as or more important than the protection of her newborn child.

She explained that she knows what it’s like to feel unloved and unwanted, and that she loves her dog and doesn’t want to give up on him -- adding that nothing and no one loves her as much as her dog.

That’s powerful stuff.

It may be true that some will never know another love like the love of a dog. But that doesn’t excuse bad judgment.

I spoke this week with another woman, whose dog is lunging at people and other dogs, has to be walked with a muzzle on, and has already been quarantined by the health department once for biting someone. And she knew he was aggressive before she brought him home. The dog wasn’t trained when she adopted him and she hasn’t trained him since. She brought home a bundle of dynamite and exposed everyone to the danger. Now she wants to be able to take him to coffee house patio or the dog park.

If a single person wants to live with a dangerous dog, that’s their choice. I can help modify the aggressive behavior and offer suggestions on how to create the best possible life. But there will be sacrifices. And Starbucks and the dog park is just the beginning of the list.

But pet parents who are also the parents of little humans are a different story -- one that can only have a happy ending if the parent protects the right child.

Is There Such a Thing as a Weather Allergy?

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease.

People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop.

Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine auto-injector in case of emergency.

Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists. ***

Calcium in bone is used structurally, where it combines with other ions to form hydroxyapatite, the mineral that keeps bones hard and strong. The mechanism for calcium entry into bone cells is very different. Calcium channel blockers do not affect mineralization of the bone, nor do they increase the risk for osteoporosis.

Reducing the Rate of Military Suicides

In a joint venture to reduce suicides, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense and the Vet Centers have hooked up to provide counseling and outreach to the National Guard on drill weekends and during training. In 2017, the National Guard had the highest rate of suicide of all the military.

Now, however, the rate of National Guard members using the Vet Centers has risen 38%, and the suicide rate has fallen to its the lowest level in five years. It’s thought that the increased use of the Vet Center services could be the reason.

Dear Approaching: There are actually two different types of flu shots available to people age 65 and older. These FDA-approved vaccines are designed to offer extra protection beyond what a standard flu shot provides, which is important for older adults who have weaker immune defenses and have a great risk of developing dangerous flu complications.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that during the 2018-2019 flu season, up to 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died because of the flu – most of whom were seniors.

You also need to be aware that these senior-specific flu shots cannot guarantee that you won’t get the flu this season, but they will lower your risk. And if you do happen to get sick, there's a good chance you won’t get as sick as you would without it. Here’s more information on the two vaccines:

Court Cupboards First Seen in Tudor England Q:

This is a photo of an antique cupboard that is part of a complete dining room set. The set includes the cupboard, a dining table with leaves, a sideboard, six chairs and two chairs with arms. It is in excellent condition. It belonged to our grandparents in the early 1900s and has been passed down through our family. We plan to give the set to the next generation and would like to know more about its histor y and insurance value.

You have a Colonial Revival court cup board. Many manufacturers loosely borrowed from early American styles. They choose from a plethora of designs that included William and Mary, Jacobean, Tudor, Elizabethan, Queen Anne, Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Duncan Phyfe and Sheraton.

Court cupboards were first seen in Tudor England Colonial Revival period peaked in homes and the 1920s and 1930s. halls in the 16th century. “Court” is the Norman word for “short.” Court cupboards were used to store cups, vessels, plates and dining room accessories.

The Colonial Revival movement swept the country and peaked in the 1920s and 1930s. The geometric design of your cupboard and the barley twist ports on the top portion were inspired by the Jacobean period of furniture. It was made around 1920, and the wood appears to be walnut.

There is a diminished interest in Colonial Revival furniture. You might want to insure the set for $1,500 to $2,500.

Rosenthal Co. made your set of din nerware in Germany around 1953. Philipp Rosenthal found his firm in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria. It was a family business and produced porcelain that was exported to Europe and the United States.

Just prior to World War II, the Nazis -- after learning that Rosenthal, though Catholic, was of Jewish heritage -- ousted him and his family and took over the factory. After the war, son Philip surfaced and gained control of the business. Today, the firm is owned and operated by the Sambonet Paderno Group.

There was a similar set offered for sale on the internet at $500.

• Production in 1913 shot upwards of 200,000 Model T’s and the number of Ford employees had more than doubled.

• Believing that happy workers who were satisfied with their wages did a better job, Ford raised the wages of his factory employees in 1914 from $2.34 per day ($60.03 in today’s dollars) to $5.00 per day ($128.28 today).

Ford’s employee raise was more than double the wages paid at other manufacturing plants.

• Ford also reduced the work day from nine hours to eight, scheduling his 13,000 workers to a three-shift system, operating 24 hours a day. These changes drastically reduced the employee turnover rate from 31.9% in 1913 to only 1.4% by 1915.

• In the mid-1920s, Ford’s mass-production techniques enabled the plant to produce a Model T every 24 seconds. By 1924, a new runabout could be had for $260. Yet sales of the Model T began to decline because of a sharp increase in competitors.

• After long deliberations, the decision was made to cease production of the vehicle and the last Model T exited the assembly line on May 26, 1927. In December of that year, a newly redesigned Model A was brought back. The necessary change in the assembly line resulted in the scrapping of over 40,000 specially designed tools that had been used in the production of Model T’s.

• More than 15 million Model T’s were sold during its 19 years of production. That places it in eighth place on the Top Ten list of most sold cars of all time. It also has the distinction of being chosen the most influential car of the 20th century. �

Swinging the club in circles and arcs when you’re trying to hit a shot straight can be quite confusing. Yet, that’s the nature of the club travel relative to a target line. The downswing can be thought of as having a diagonal component to the target line that should help you get it on the right track.

Once the backswing is completed, the lower body makes a slight lateral move as the arms swing forward. It’s helpful to visualize that the swing approaching the ball slightly diagonally into impact, rather than straight on. The diagonal thinking helps bring the right arm into the side of the body and prevents unwinding too quickly.

It may help to lay down two alignment rods (or an umbrella and club)) to illustrate the target line and the intended downswing path in your practice sessions. Angle the inner rod (umbrella) roughly twenty to thirty degrees PROOF as illustrated.
