14 Things You Need to Know About How to Use Your Garbage Disposal Everyday CHEAPSKATE ®

I would like to personally thank the late John W. Hammes, an architect working in Racine,

by Mary Hunt Wisconsin, who in 1927 invented the garbage disposal. What a brilliant idea. Is there anything more convenient in a kitchen than a garbage disposal?

For me, it’s right up there with my dishwasher.

I’ve learned the hard way that a garbage disposal is not a trash can. There are proper ways to care for and feed a garbage disposal -- rules that when followed will keep your garbage disposal in tip-top shape, functioning as a reliable member of your household team.

Learn from my mistakes so you don’t have to make them yourself. Clogged drains are a major inconvenience, and garbage disposal repair can be a costly proposition.

Do these things: 1. Run your garbage disposal regularly.

Frequent use prevents rust and corrosion, and makes all parts stay moving to prevent small obstructions from accumulating.

2. Run cold water.

Always run a strong flow of cold water before you turn the disposal on to grind food waste.

Cold water will cause any grease or oil that may get into the unit to solidify so it can be chopped up before reaching the trap.

3. Grind bones and pits.

Grind certain hard materials, such as small chicken and fish bones (never beef or pork because they’re too large), eggshells, very small fruit pits. Yes! These particles create a scouring action inside the grinding chamber that cleans the garbage disposal walls. And finally, run a half cup of baking soda through to sharpen the blades and shine things up.

4. Cut large items into smaller pieces.

It’s hard on the machine if you force large pieces of anything. Put pieces into the garbage disposal a few at a time with the cold water running instead of trying to shove a large amount in all at once.

Don’t do these things: 5. Don’t pour down grease, oil or fat.

Grease will slowly accumulate and not only stop the disposal from grinding up food particles

but also create drain clogs, the likes of which you do not want to experience.

6. Don’t use hot water.

Hot water will cause grease to liquefy and accumulate, causing -- you guessed it -- hopelessly clogged drains!

7. Don’t grind anything fibrous.

Don’t grind anything that’s tough and fibrous like cornhusks, celery stalks, onion skins and artichokes. Fibers from these can tangle and jam the garbage disposal motor and block drains.

8. Don’t turn off the motor or the cold water until grinding is finished.

When grinding is complete, turn off the garbage disposal first. Let a strong flow of cold water continue to run for at least 15 seconds, flushing out any remaining particles. Then turn off the water.

9. Don’t put potato peels down the garbage disposal.

The starches in the potatoes will turn into a thick paste and may cause blades to stick. Oh, boy, what a mess you’ll have. Do yourself a favor, and put potato peels into the garbage can or compost pile.

10. Don’t put large amounts down all at once.

If you must, feed food into the garbage disposal a little at a time with the cold water running. This will help the food scraps flow down freely through the drainpipes and plumbing.

11. Don’t put in expandable foods.

Don’t put things like pasta and rice into your garbage disposal. If it expands as you cook it, that’s what will happen in your pipes or the disposal. Result? Jams and clogs.

12. Don’t put coffee grounds down the garbage disposal.

Even though coffee grounds won’t harm the garbage disposal and can actually help eliminate odors, they can accumulate in drains and pipes, causing clogs. It’s best to just avoid that.

13. Don’t use harsh chemicals like bleach or drain cleaners.

They can damage blades and pipes.

14. Don’t put anything in that is non-biodegrad able.

Don’t ever (that means never) put anything in the disposal that is not biodegradable food.

Your disposal is not a trash can. Don’t grind glass, plastic, metal, paper or cigarette butts. * * *

Show me a seeing-eye dog, and I’ll show you a dog that is 100 percent socialized. Friendly, outgoing, unflappable anytime, anywhere with anyone -- these are the qualities that describe a truly socialized dog.

Unfortunately, more and more dog owners are taking their unsocialized dogs into social situations, demonstrating little regard for the safety of others. Case in point: A 39-year-old Home Depot greeter in Ottawa came face-to-face with this trend last week when she leaned in to pet a customer’s shih tzu and the dog bit off the tip of her nose. She was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.

Are people foolish to assume a dog in a public place is safe for displays of “public” affection?

Should dog owners keep their anti-social canines out of the public eye?

As an increasing number of businesses open their doors to our four-legged companions, dog owners everywhere should keep in mind that greater freedom means greater responsibility.

If your dog likes most people, if he doesn’t like other dogs or certain dogs, or if he shows disdain for children, or men, or women, or redheads, or anyone with a beard or carrying an umbrella, then he is not fully socialized. Friendly and outgoing with everyone -- that is the goal and the result of proper socialization.

Lack of socialization can result in a shy dog.

Poor breeding, kenneling a dog too long and lack of individual attention are also factors that can create a shy pup. Shyness tends to manifest as fearfulness or timidity. Left unchecked, these qualities can fester and lead to fear-based aggression. At that point, you have a real problem on your hands.

Don’t let it get to that point.

Socializing a dog takes time, energy and a little bit of creativity. It doesn’t happen overnight, but the process is a lot of fun if you approach it with the right attitude.

Think of it as a journey of exposure. The objective is to expose your dog to as many people, animals, sights, sounds and environments as pos-

The scammers have been very busy at finding clever new ways to sneak in and drain people's money by stealing their private information, especially targeting vulnerable seniors. Is there no end to their creativity?

The AARP is helping us to fight back, however, with its Fraud Watch Network’s free Scam Tracking Map. You’ll find the map on the AARP website (aarp.org) when you put “scam tracking map” in the search box.

When you do this (and you should) be sure to click on the widest possible search area, 200 miles, after you enter your ZIP code. Click first on AARP user-submitted reports. You’ll see colored dots where scam activity has occurred.

Click on one and scroll down to see the details.

After you view those reports you will know what specific methods the scammers are using in that area. Then go back and click on Law Enforcement Alerts, which contains authorities warnings about particular scams to be aware of that are on the move near you.

You Don’t Have to Be Old to Get Social Security If you were to play a word association

game and the phrase “Social Security” came up, I bet many of you would answer “old people” or “senior citizens.” It’s normal to associate Social Security with old folks because, well, the majority of Social Security beneficiaries are just that.

But about 30% of people getting a monthly check from Social Security are nowhere near their golden years. For example, there are about 5 million children who get Social Security on a living or deceased parent’s account. And there are another 10 million people who get Social Security disability benefits.

I’ve saved up some questions that deal with those aspects of Social Security for today’s column.

The rules say that a son or daughter who has been disabled since childhood is due a monthly dependent’s benefit on a parent’s retirement account. And the rules further say that benefits can also be paid to the other caregiving parent, assuming he or she is not working outside the home.

Let’s look at what that would mean in your case. At age 62, you would be paid 75% of your full retirement rate. And your son would get an amount equal to 50% of your full retirement benefit. Your wife is also due the 50% rate. Those benefits would continue for the rest of your lives. And if you should happen to die first, your son would get an amount equal to 75% of your full retirement rate. Your wife would get anywhere between 75% and 100%, depending on how old she is when you die.

I have enclosed a photo of a porcelain vase that I’ve had for years. It stands about 7 inches tall and is 6 inches in diameter. It is decorated with hand-painted, beige flowers, vines and green leaves against a cream-colored background. The top has a raised, gold pattern between two gold bands.

“J - P - L - France” is written on the bottom in green.

Anything you can tell me about my vase will be appreciated.

vase. The Pouyat family had been associated with porcelain since the 1700s. He founded his company in Limoges, France, in 1842.

When he died, in 1849, his sons managed the f a c t o r y.

They successfully expor ted l a r g e quantities of white ware and decorated porcelain Jean Pouyat Porcelain Co. was located to send to in Limoges, France. the United States in the late 1800s. The Pouyat factory joined with several other firms and finally closed in 1932.

Your porcelain vase was made sometime around 1900. It might be worth $125 to $200. *** I have drawn the likeness of the mark that is on the bottom of a Fiestaware mixing bowl. It was my grandmother’s and has been passed down to me. It is yellow, measures over 8 inches in diameter and stands at almost 3 inches tall.

Some can remember her on an early commercial broadcast in color, introducing her “Mystery Fruitcake.” The recipe started with her honey spice cake mix and was touted as a “never-fail cake.”

It was “grandmother good” and liquor-free. The letters “G M I” stand for General Mills Industries.

Many times a chip around the green requires so little speed and minimal carry that you’re tempted to putt it instead. Yet, there’s too much thick grass in the way, a sprinkler head in the line, or other conditions that prompt you to create a soft chipping shot. Paul Runyan, a sharp short game artist back in the 40’s and 50’s, used a unique chipping style that fit just these types of situations.
