Housebreaking is hands-down the Number One problem for dog owners.

Take this recent letter from a reader:

“My Yorkie Randy urinates in my home, and I’m seriously at the point of giving him away.

We love him dearly, but I can’t have my home ruined. He has a doggy door that he uses, but I keep finding puddles in the house. Help! You are my last resort.”

Reads like the TV Guide log line for this week’s episode of “Desperate Housebreakers.”

What the writer fails to mention is that Randy is nine years old and never trained. That’s 3,285 days’ worth of Yorkie urine on the carpet -- which, in fact, is the impetus for the cry for help. She’s recarpeting the whole house and that’s not cheap.

“I’m not going to spend all this money on new carpet just to have Randy ruin it.”

Readers, take note: Most people will spend thousands on new carpeting and nothing on dog training. Why not put a little something into dog training and save thousands on carpeting? Just asking...

Housebreaking a dog should not break the bank. It requires a system and consistent adherence to that system. A reasonably intelligent person can housebreak a dog in three to seven days.

Here’s how: 1) Establish and adhere to a feed-water-walk schedule. This conditions your pup’s body to eliminate waste at specific times of the day and night, as determined by you -- so stick to the schedule.

2) Use proper confinement. Baby gates and wire crates work well to keep your dog comfortable and confined. Free rein of the house is not allowed during the housebreaking phase. You can’t correct a mistake if it’s happening in another room. You must catch him in the act.

3) Neutralize odors. If you don’t catch your pup in the act, all you can do is clean it up. This is where that effective odor neutralizer comes in.

Women and Social Security

Most women have a different relationship with Social Security than men do. Why is that?

After all, almost no Social Security rules are gendered. For example, retirement benefits are figured the same way for men and women. Spousal benefits are also gender-neutral. In other words, a woman can qualify for benefits as a wife or widow in the same way that a man can qualify for benefits as a husband or widower.

But even though Social Security’s rules treat men and women equally, society and history have not. Men tend to work longer and have more years of earnings on their Social Security records.

In part, that’s because women bear more of the burden of child rearing and spend more years out of the paid workforce. And statistically, men tend to earn more than women, giving them higher earnings on their Social Security records.

Those and other factors are why men usually end up with higher monthly Social Security retirement benefits than women. And because women have lower retirement benefits, they are more likely to qualify for supplemental benefits as a spouse on their husband’s or ex-husband’s Social Security record.

And that is the primary reason for today’s column: to help women (and their husbands) understand the basic rules associated with eligibility for benefits as a wife, a divorced wife, a widow or a divorced widow. Here are the basic rules.

--Your own Social Security benefit:

If you have worked enough to qualify for your own Social Security benefit, you will usually be paid that benefit first. After paying your own benefit, the Social Security Administration will then look to your husband’s (or ex-husband’s) Social Security record to see if you qualify for any supplemental spousal benefits on that record.

--Most Social Security applications are open-ended (see exceptions below):

SSA has a rule that says an application for one Social Security benefit is automatically considered an application for all other Social Security benefits you are due. What that means is that you generally cannot apply for benefits as a wife on your husband’s Social Security record at age 62, and then later switch to your own benefits at age 66.

Your application for wife’s benefits is automatically considered an application for your own Social Security benefits -- and vice versa. But there are two big exceptions to that rule.

Exception 1: If you turn 66 before 2020 and if you wait until age 66 (or later) to file for Social Security, then you can restrict your application to one benefit or another. For example, you could file for wife’s benefits (or divorced wife’s benefits) at 66, and then at age 70, switch to full benefits on your own record. How Medicare Covers Ambulance Services

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: How does Medicare cover ambulance services? I had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital emergency care three months ago because I was unable to drive. Today I was shocked to receive a bill for $1,149.00 from the ambulance company. When I called they told me Medicare does not cover this type of service. Is this really true? --Shocked Senior

Dear Shocked: This is a Medicare issue that confuses many seniors. Yes, Medicare does cover emergency ambulance services and, in limited cases, non-emergency ambulance services too, but only when such services are deemed medically necessary and reasonable.

So, what does that mean?

First, it means that your medical condition must be serious enough that you need an ambulance to transport you safely to a hospital or other facility where you can receive care that Medicare covers.

If a car or taxi is able to transport you without endangering your health, Medicare won’t pay. For example, Medicare probably won’t pay for an ambulance to take someone with a simple arm fracture to a hospital. But if he or she is in shock, in danger of doing so, is prone to internal bleeding or other condition that needs EMT attention, ambulance transport may be medically necessary to ensure the patient’s safety on the way. The details make the difference.

Medicare will cover the cost of ambulance transport to the nearest appropriate facility and no more.

How to Appeal

If an ambulance company bills you for services after Medicare denies payment, but you think the ride was medically necessary, you can appeal (see Medicare.gov/claims-appeals).

From time to time, incorrect information, such as a wrong medical code or category number, is sent to Medicare about a person’s condition or their need for services. Communication errors such as this can easily result in an automatic denial of payment.

Non-Emergency Situations

In limited cases, Medicare will also cover non-emergency ambulance services if such transportation is needed to treat or diagnose your health condition while enroute, while the use of any other transportation method could endanger your health. Not having another means of transportation, such as a friend, relative or taxi, is not sufficient for Medicare to pay for ambulance services.

If you need some help contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which has counselors that can help you file an appeal for free. To locate your local SHIP, visit ShiptaCenter.org or call 877-839-2675.

Antique Desk Is Something to Write About

Q: The antique desk seen in this

photo was handed down to my parents and then to me a long time ago. I am 95, and I have never been able to find any information on the style, era or manufacturer.

The desk has car ved pulls and decorative wood spirals along the front and straight legs. There are keyholes in each drawer as well as on the top. When it is opened it reveals a writing surface, a small drawer and pigeon holes. The desk has the original finish and is in mint condition. I still use the desk to write letters and pay bills.

I would never part with my heirloom, but I would appreciate any information you can provide.

Your vase was made by Camark Pot tery. Samuel Carnes founded his pottery in 1926 in Camden, Arkansas. In the beginning, he produced art pottery similar to Weller Pottery.

John Lessell was one of the talented artists employed by Carnes. He worked with iridescent and luster glazes, which proved to be so successful. Lessell died unexpectedly one year after he was hired. Carnes quickly brought Lessell’s wife, Jennie, and daughter, Billie, into the pottery. They were experienced in the luster and iridescent techniques.

Camark Pottery was located in Arkansas.

In the mid-1930s, monochromatic glazes began to replace their luster, drip and iridescent finishes. By the 1950s, they were drifting away from creative art pottery and into mass-producing cheaper products for florists and giftware. In 1966, Carnes died, and the pottery soon closed.

The block-letter mark was die-stamped into the clay and used from 1928 to the 1930s.

Similar vases have been offered on the internet in the range of $50 to $75.
