Grand Canyon

Follow along as Tidbits makes a journey into the Grand Canyon, located in Arizona’s northwest corner, about a 90-minute drive from Flagstaff.

• The Colorado River winds its way through the entire length of the Grand Canyon, with an average depth of 100 feet, an average width of 300 feet, and an average flow speed of about four mph. The river winds through the 277 mile length of the canyon, separating the North and South Rims. In terms of square miles, the size of the canyon makes it larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.

• The canyon’s average depth from rim to floor is about one mile, but its deepest point reaches to 7,800 feet at the North Rim. It is 18 miles across at its widest point.

• Native Americans built villages within the Canyon and its caves thousands of years ago, and have inhabited the area continuously. It is regarded as a holy site by many of the tribes that populate it, including the Hopi, Navajo, Havasupai, Paiute, and Hualapai.

• The first documented viewing of the Grand Canyon by a European was in 1540, when Garcia de Lopez de Cárdenas, a member of the expedition by Spanish explorer Francisco Coronado, traveled to the South Rim along with Spanish soldiers led by Hopi guides. It was not seen again by Europeans for the next 200 years.

He went on to tell me that his $100 bid bought him a dog on the popular Internet auction site, and that the seller met him at a gas station on the side of a highway to deliver the merchandise: One dog. No papers. What was he thinking?

He was thinking he wanted a dog and didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

He was thinking he could learn everything he needed to know from pictures posted online alongside a brief description.

What was eBay thinking? You’d be hardpressed to argue that providing a forum for the online auctioning of live animals is a reputable practice.

Turns out, eBay doesn’t allow this practice.

Under Rules and Policies in the membership section of their website, they’ve posted a list of prohibited and restricted items for sellers, and the list includes live animals. How active eBay is in enforcing their rules, I don’t know. But they do provide a space for users to report violations.

Online communities policing themselves is not a new concept. And the idea isn’t too far removed from the Neighborhood Watch groups that operate in many real-world communities. The key to the success of such organizations is that the

Maple Bedroom Furniture Rocks

This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain vase that I have. It is decorated with pastel flowers and green leaves, all in relief against a cream background. My vase stands about 8 inches tall, has gold trim and is in perfect condition. It was a gift from a great-aunt and has been sitting in my china cabinet for years.

I don’t know anything about its histor y. If you could provide some information about its vintage, maker and value, I would be grateful.

an image of a spinning wheel in relief on the top drawer. The set includes the dresser; a full bed with a headboard, footboard and side rails; and a chest with four drawers. The image on the footboard is of a woman at a spinning wheel.

The set has been in my family for at least 75 years and is in excellent condition.

A: Your set of hard rock maple bedroom

furniture was made around 1950. Several furniture factories made pieces decorated with a variety of motifs in relief. A few of the most popular designs included spinning wheels, stagecoaches, covered wagons, nautical themes and Davy Crockett.

At first glance, your furniture appeared to be made by Virginia House. But because Virginia House always marked its furniture with a trademark, it is unlikely that Virginia House made your set. Several other factories produced similar lines of bedroom sets, including Ethan Allen, Tell City and Huntley-Hill-Stockton.

Your set would probably be worth $600 to $1,200. If you could identify the maker, it could be worth more. ***

The mark you enclosed was used around 1910 by Amphora Porcelain Works. The pottery was founded by Hans and Carl Reissner, Rudolf Kessel and Edward Stellmacher in TurnTeplitz, Bohemia, in 1892. They produced handdecorated porcelain and earthenware that appealed to both Europe and the United States. Your vase was made in the late 1800s or the early 1900s and would be worth $250 to $325.
