I’ve been working with a one-year-old Weimaraner. His owners started looking for a trainer after he did more than $10,000 worth of damage to two living room sofas. After.

When I visited their home for the first time, I walked into the living room and couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a supersized shredder had attacked and mauled the couches. They were more foam than furniture.

The owners described the problems they were having with their dog -- jumping, barking, chewing, stealing food, knocking over the kids and guests. The irony, of course, is that for a year they had dismissed the idea of dog training because they didn’t want to spend the money.

These folks were under the impression that their oversized pup would grow out of it soon. Two things about that: 1) Dogs mature around age 2 to 2-and-a-half. 2) Puppies grow into -- not out of -- bad habits left unchecked.

They told me their beloved Weimaraner acted out when home alone because he was “angry” that they left him. I assured them he was not angry, and that it was much more likely that he had no reason to think they cared about the state of their house.

When a puppy is left alone with free rein of the house and no boundaries to speak of, how is he to know what’s what?

They explained their quandary: They can’t leave him outside in the yard because the neighbors complain about his constant barking. And they don’t feel comfortable leaving him in a crate inside because they worry that he’s bored and lonely.

Here comes the benefit of calling a professional: Options.

For the barking problem, I recommend the citronella collar as an effective training tool. When the dog barks, the collar emits a short burst of citronella spray. The dog dislikes the spray and stops barking. Eventually, he gets the idea that he can avoid the spray experience entirely by not barking.

Social Security Reduction Isn’t Chiseled in Stone

ARF! ARF! ARF! That’s not a dog barking.

It’s the acronym for a little-known Social Security rule that may help some people who retired at age 62 and took reduced benefits but then decided to return to work and now wonder if their reduction is permanent. Because of ARF, it isn’t. ARF stands for “adjustment to the reduction factor.” It’s a software program built into Social Security Administration computers that kicks in after you reach full retirement age to compensate for benefits not received prior to FRA due to the Social Security earnings penalty.

Before I explain how the ARF works, I’ve got to give a little background, starting with a quick overview of the earnings penalty. SSA calls it the “retirement earnings test.” But I prefer to call it a penalty because, well, you get penalized if you are a Social Security beneficiary under full retirement age who is working and trying to make a few extra bucks.

Specifically, the law says that one dollar must be withheld from your Social Security checks for each two dollars you earn over a certain threshold that changes every year. The 2019 threshold is $17,640. So, to give a really simple example, if Hank is working and plans to make $21,640 in 2019, then $2,000 must be withheld from his Social Security checks in 2019. ($21,640 minus $17,640 equals $4,000, divided by two equals $2,000.)

Now, some more background. The law says that if you start your Social Security checks before full retirement age, your benefit will be reduced five-ninths of 1% for each of the first 36 months of reduction and five-twelfths of 1% for any additional months. That’s a bit too convoluted for what I am trying to explain in this column. I am going to keep things simple by saying that your benefit is reduced about one half of 1% for each month you start benefits before your full retirement age.

For example, let’s say that Hank’s full retirement age is 66. But he started his benefits when he was 65. That’s 12 months early, so his Social Security benefit was reduced by about 6%. In other words, at age 65, Hank started getting about 94% of his full retirement age benefit.

Your other option would be to continue receiving Social Security benefits and let the earnings penalty and ARF provisions take their course. You will probably be due all, or almost all, of the remaining benefits you are due in 2019. But in 2020, 2021 and 2022, you will lose one dollar in benefits for each two dollars you exceed the earnings threshold for those years. I’m guessing that will be roughly $7,500 that will need to be withheld from your Social Security checks for each year. You said your benefit rate is $1,650 per month, or $19,800 for the year. That means that even though you will be making $35,000 from your job, you will still get about $12,300 in Social Security benefits each of the years 2020 through 2022.

In 2023, the year you turn age 66, the earnings threshold goes up to about $47,000. Your $35,000 salary is less than that -- meaning no penalty can be applied to you so you will be due all your Social Security checks from January 2023 on.

Then, at age 66, when the ARF kicks in, your benefit rate will be adjusted to remove the reduction factor for those months you didn’t get a check between age 62 and 66. I won’t bother trying to do the precise math, but I’m guessing instead of the initial 25% reduction you took for starting your benefits at 62, you will end up with something like a 15% reduction. So I bet your monthly benefit will go up from the current $1,650 to maybe $1,900 per SecuSocial my started I recently

kicks in. That program says Hank’s ongoing permanent benefit can only be reduced for those months he actually received a Social Security check before he turned his full retirement age. In our example, Hank only received 10 Social Security checks in 2019. So instead of the initial 12-month, or 6%, reduction, Hank’s ongoing benefit is adjusted to give him only a 10 month, or 5%, reduction.

In other words, starting at age 66, Hank will get a 1% boost in his Social Security check. Actually, the ARF program usually isn’t finished running until several months after full retirement age, but it will be retroactive to the month of FRA. That was a very simple explanation of how

ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. However, most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium.

However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake.

By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see. ***

How Seniors Can Spot Fake News

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I recently read that seniors are the number one purveyors of fake news on the Internet. Is this true, or is this fake news too? If it’s true, how can we "vulnerable" seniors go about telling the difference? --Fed-Up, Faked-Out Senior

Dear Fed-Up: Yes, it’s true. According to a recent study published in the journal Science Advances, people aged 65 and older are almost four times more likely to share news of questionable validity on social media than younger people.

Why do older users share fake news more often? There are two theories. The first is that seniors, who came to the Internet later, sometimes lack the digital literacy skills of their younger counterparts to identify false or misleading content. In other words, older folks tend to be more trusting of news sources than the more "street wise" younger folks. The second is that many older people experience cognitive decline as they age, making them more likely to fall for hoaxes and sensational claims.

What is Fake News?

Fake news is nothing new, but it is more prevalent now than ever before because of the mass media, the Internet, and social networking which enables it to spread like wildfire.

Fake news is false news stories, hoaxes or propaganda with a political or social agenda created to deliberately misinform, deceive or otherwise twist the reader's/viewer's thinking to agree with their cause. This can be accomplished by intentionally omitting key facts, by presenting the news in such a way as to distort the truth, or by presenting out-and-out lies while claiming it to be actual truth.

Winged Creatures Support Bar Cabinet Q:

This is a photo of a bar cabinet I purchased in St. Augustine, Florida. When opened, there are two surfaces for mixing drinks and also storage for liquor bottles. Each side opens, revealing places for glassware.

The inside of the top lid and outside of the closed cabinet lid have car ved Asian scenes in relief. The feet represent winged creatures with claws. The wood does show some wear, but overall, it is in good shape.

I was wondering if you could help me find out what it is worth and where I would go to sell it.

A:

Many bar cabinets were made in China in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Often, they were made using elm, mahogany or c h e r r y.

T h e y were designed for export to Europe and the United States.

During the 1920s to 1940s, cocktails were exCocktails and bar cabinets were tremely fashionable in the 1920s and 1940s. fashionable, and there was a big demand for bar cabinets.

There is still interest, but it is much more modest.

Because there is minimal demand, selling one can be difficult. Some options include selling on the internet, to an antiques dealer, on consignment with a dealer or at an antique auction.

Similar bar cabinets made in China have been seen on eBay, selling in the range of $200 to $500. ***

The Boys Town Pottery Studio made your figurine. Boys Town was founded by Catholic priest Father Flanagan in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1917. He recognized the need for providing help, education, guidance and a home for boys who were orphaned. In 1940, William Wilkins and his father, James, were hired as instructors. They developed a successful ceramic instruction program for some of the boys. Their studio art wares were sold in the Boys Town Gift Shop. After the death of both Wilkins men, the pottery began to decline. It closed in 1993.

Your figurine represents the Boys Town philosophy. It was made in the mid-1900s and would probably be worth $25 to $50.

If you struggle from 20-30 yards off the green from the fairway or tight lies, give Steve’s method a try.

From a narrow stance and centered ball position, play this chip with your sand wedge or gap wedge.

The key is to make the arm swing go back to around 9 o’clock while the club points mildly upward. Your wrists may feel slightly tighter than normal, as if you’re restricting the hinging action. Keep your elbows wide as if you had a volleyball in between them as well.
