13 Ways to Use Vinegar that Will Surprise You!

It’s cheap. It’s available in every supermarket and home center in the universe. And it’s so useful around your home ®you may have a difficult time believing it. That’s the power of white

by Mary Hunt vinegar -- the same vinegar you cook with and pour on your salad. Take a look, and marvel!

WINDOWS

Add 1/4 cup white vinegar to a quart of very warm water to make a good window cleaner. Wipe with a microfiber cloth and your windows will sparkle.

COMPUTER MOUSE

If your mouse has a removable tracking ball, clean it with a 50-50 vinegar-water solution. First, remove the ball from underneath the mouse by twisting off the cover. Dip a clean cloth into the solution; wring it out; and then wipe the ball clean. Next, remove fingerprints and dirt from the mouse itself. Then use a vinegarmoistened cotton swab to clean out the gunk and debris from inside the ball chamber. Allow plenty of time for all parts to dry thoroughly before reinserting the ball.

LAUNDRY

Instead of fabric softener or dryer sheets, add 1/2 to 1 cup vinegar to the last rinse in your washing machine (as you would liquid softener).

Your clothes will come out soft because the vinegar helps to remove every trace of laundry detergent, which causes fabrics to stiffen.

WATERMARKS

Vinegar will dissolve hard-water marks like those on shower doors, faucets and vases.

If the vinegar is hot (heat in the microwave), it works even faster.

BALLPOINT PEN INK

Got ink marks from a ballpoint pen adorning a wall, desktop or other inappropriate space?

No worries. Dab full-strength white vinegar on the ink using a cloth or a sponge. Repeat until the marks are gone. Then buy your child a nice big sketchpad.

WINDSHIELD

Wash your car's windshield with fullstrength vinegar -- avoiding painted areas -- to help keep ice and frost at bay.

WALLPAPER

Vinegar makes a great wallpaper remover. First, remove all the wallpaper you can by simply pulling it off. You’ll probably get only the top layer, but that’s OK. Spray full-strength vinegar on what remains. This will begin to dissolve the glue. Once softened you’ll be able to remove the rest without harsh chemicals.

WINDOW BLINDS

Remove the torture of cleaning mini blinds with this white-glove treatment: Just put on a white cotton glove and moisten the fingers in a solution made of equal parts white vinegar and hot tap water. Then slide your fingers across both sides of each slat, and prepare to be amazed. If the blinds are extra grimy use a soft sponge instead. Use a container of clean water to periodically wash the glove/sponge clean, and just keep going.

TENDERIZE

Use the acidity of vinegar to tenderize meat. I add several tablespoons to pot roast, soups and stews. Balsamic vinegar will add a wonderful flavor, but white vinegar tenderizes just as well. Your guests will think you are serving them filet mignon.

REMOVE WAXY BUILDUP

To get built-up polish off a piece of wood furniture, dip a cloth in equal parts vinegar and water, and squeeze it out well. Carefully clean away the polish, moving with the grain.

Wipe dry with a soft towel or cloth. Most leather tabletops will come clean simply by wiping them down with a soft cloth dipped in 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water. Use a clean towel to dry off any remaining liquid.

HIDE SCRATCHES

To make scratches on wood furniture less noticeable, mix some distilled or cider vinegar and iodine in a small jar, and paint over the scratch with a small artist’s brush. Use more iodine for darker woods and more vinegar for lighter shades.

CANDLE WAX

Did a candle go nuts and drip wax on your fine wood furniture? Do this: First, soften the wax using a hair dryer on its hottest setting. Blot as much of that softened wax as you can with paper towels. Then remove what’s left by rubbing with a cloth soaked in a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Wipe clean with a soft absorbent cloth. Voila!

“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.

You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” -- Erma Bombeck

I have a friend, a nervous type, and every time she hears a loud “POP!” or, worse, a loud “POP-POP-POP!” she has a mini-meltdown and rushes through the house securing windows and doors, having come to the foregone conclusion that someone has been gunned down at the foot of her drive and she is next.

Did I mention she lives out in the country?

Always -- so far at least -- it’s a car backfiring or kids playing with fireworks.

And that brings me back to Erma -- because Frisbee, potato salad and flies don’t hold a candle to good old-fashioned fireworks when it comes to patriotic displays in the U.S. of A. For most of us, fireworks are the ultimate expression of national pride.

Whether or not we draw a connection between “the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air” and our much more delightful version of fire in the sky, the reality is that one kid’s delight is another woman’s terror.

Or another dog’s terror.

So here we are. It’s officially the summer of 2019. The Fourth of July is less than a week away.

What’s the plan for the d-o-g?

If your dog is as delighted by fiery skies as he is by Grandpa’s brisket, great. Count your lucky stars and celebrate with some iffy potato salad -- for you, not the pooch.

If your dog is apathetic about the whole shebang, even better. Independence Day is just another day.

If your dog is ambivalent or flat-out fearful of the snap-crackle-pop that goes on all day and into the night, then you need a plan.

home with your dog. But many of us like to celebrate, and if your dog has a true phobia of loud noises, he’ll require more than just your presence to survive a lengthy display, particularly if you live near the action.

If your dog reacts to fireworks like deer to wolves, you might want to ask your veterinarian about prescribing a mild sedative to help him sleep.

Some dogs react so strongly to loud noises that they literally harm themselves chewing through walls and fences trying to get away from them.

This is dangerous not only in the potential injury to their jaws, but also in the possibility of getting hit by a car should they succeed in their attempt. In extreme cases, a mild sedative makes sense.

For most dogs who fear the Fourth’s festivities, a thoughtfully arranged crate or other comfortably secure and familiar area will go a long way to calming his anxiety. Close all of the windows and window coverings, and play some music loud enough to drown out exterior noises. Make sure he has access to his favorite toys, cushion, and blanket. If you’re going to be around to supervise, give him something special to chew on. And if you’re going out, secure him in his crate or in the room you’ve made so comfortable.

It might be best to avoid walking an anxious dog on Independence Day, but exercise is a great weapon against anxiety. If you decide to forgo a walk, make sure you get in a good play session in the yard or in the house.

Above all, make sure your dog is chipped and is wearing ID tags that include your current contact information. You can be too full, but you can never be too safe.

German Pensioner Thinks She’s Being Cheated By US Social Security Q:

I am 66 years old. Even though I am now a U.S. citizen, I spent the first 30 years of my adult life living and working in Germany. But I have lived and worked in the U.S. for the past 15 years. I get a generous retirement pension from the German Social Security system. And I was shocked to learn that my U.S. Social Security benefit will be reduced by an unfair law called the “windfall elimination provision.”

I have paid taxes in this countr y for 15 years. So I earned ever y penny of my already small Social Security retirement pension. How dare they reduce it even further!

Where is the windfall I am supposedly getting? I see that there is a bill in Congress that has bipartisan support to repeal this unjust law. If that doesn’t work, I plan to file a class action lawsuit to get what is rightfully mine. In the meantime, at least I should be able to get some of my husband’s Social Security.

fairly. And I hope that after I explain the windfall elimination provision law, you will agree. Also, I will comment on your class action lawsuit plans and on the possibility of you collecting spousal benefits on your husband’s record.

To understand WEP, I’ll first familiarize you with one of the tenets of our Social Security system.

One key goal of that program is to give a financial boost to low-income retirees. How that is accomplished is with a retirement benefit formula that is skewed to give poor people a higher rate of return when comparing their income and the taxes they pay with the Social Security check they receive.

The retirement formula is too complicated to explain in a short newspaper column. Here is a simplified version. The average middle-class worker in this country will get a Social Security benefit that represents about 40% of his or her average preretirement earnings. A very poor person could get up to a 90% return rate.

That doesn’t mean that a poor person gets a higher Social Security benefit. But it does mean he or she will get a better rate of return comparing the taxes they paid with the benefit they will receive.

And here’s the deal. To the Social Security Administration computers, you look like one of these poor people Why? Because you have only 15 years of earnings on your Social Security record.

As far as the system knows, you spent the rest of your life unemployed or not working. So when your Social Security retirement benefit is initially calculated, you get that 90% return rate intended for a the very lowest income workers in this country.

That’s the “windfall.”

But the fact is, you’re not poor. You’ve worked all your life and you get a nice pension from the German Social Security system. I bet you could be considered a comfortably middle-class person in this country. So you should get the same U.S. Social Security return rate that all other middle-class people get.

And that’s what the WEP formula does. In

Did You Pay Fees With VA Home Loan?

Did you take out a Department of Veterans Affairs loan to buy a home between 2012 and 2017?

Are you on VA disability? Did you pay extra fees on your loan? Pull out your loan documents and take a look. You could be due a refund.

The VA Office of the Inspector General did a review to see if the Veterans Benefits Administration was allowing veterans to be charged loan guaranty fees. OIG dug deep and determined that between 2012 and 2017, the VA collected $9.78 billion in fees. Of those, 72,900 fee-exempt veterans were hit for $286 million. Additionally, says the OIG, if the Loan Guaranty Service doesn’t get control of the situation, it could owe another $164 million over the next five years to 43,400 veterans.

This failure to refund went on even after the loan program learned in 2014 that some veterans were exempt from the fees. In 2016 the Loan Guaranty Service acknowledged that $150 million needed to be refunded. As of January 2019, nothing has been done.

The individual numbers are brutal. The amounts those 72,900 exempt veterans paid averaged $4,400 and go as high as $19,500. Some fees, the excuse was, happened when a veteran was not exempt at the time of the loan but became exempt later. Fair enough. But there were times where lenders claimed that refunds were applied to loan balances -- but there was no documentation.

The OIG offered recommendations, but we know how that sometimes goes. The plan for action is to be finished by the end of July.

In short, there is a lot of fee money out there, and some of it might belong to you. Look at your loan docs. Sometimes the fee is paid up front; sometimes it’s rolled into the loan. Read through the OIG report at www.va.gov/oig/pubs/ VAOIG-18-03250-130.pdf. * * *

Dear Looking: Finding a good inhome caregiver for an elderly parent can be challenging. You want to find one that’s reliable and trustworthy, as well as someone your mother likes and is comfortable with. Here are some tips that can help.

Know Your Needs

Before you start the task of looking for an in-home caregiver, your first step is to determine the level of care your mom needs. This can pinpoint the type of help she’ll need. For example, if she only needs help with daily living tasks like shopping, cooking, doing laundry, bathing or dressing, a “homemaker” or “personal care aide” will do.

But, if she needs health care services, there are “home health aides” that may do all the things a homemaker does, plus they also have training in administering medications, changing wound dressings and other medically related duties. Home health aides often work under a nurse’s supervision.

Once you settle on a level of care, you then need to decide how many hours of assistance she’ll need. For example, does your mom need someone to come in just a few mornings a week to help her cook, clean, run errands or perhaps bathe? Or does she need more continuous care that requires daily visits or a full-time aide?

After you determine her needs, there are two ways in which you can go about hiring someone. Either through an agency, or you can hire someone directly on your own.

Hiring Through an Agency

Hiring a personal care or home health aide through an agency is the safest and easiest option, but it’s more expensive. Costs typically run anywhere between $14 and $25 an hour depending on where you live and the qualification of the aide.

Enclosed is a picture of my large collection of kitchenware. The pattern is “Autumn Wheat,” and the maker is Hall’s China Co. I have enjoyed the set for many years now but am ready to sell it. Antique dealers have told me it is too large of a collection for them to purchase it.

If you have any suggestions on how to start this process, it will be greatly appreciated.

Hall’s China Co. was founded in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1903. They introduced the “Autumn Leaf” pattern in 1933. The pattern was not hand-painted. It is a decal design.

The company produced a complete line of kitchenware and dinnerware for Jewel Tea Co., a food and coffee firm that sold door to door and was located in Barrington, Illinois. “Autumn Leaf” wares were often given as premiums for items purchased by homemakers. The pattern was discontinued in 1971.

A large collection can be difficult to sell.

By 1940, Haviland China Co., located in Limoges, France, took issue with the American company using the name “Limoges.” Haviland China brought suit, and Sebring changed the name to “American Limoges.”

It was the first china factory to create a ceramic lab and employ ceramic engineers. It also initiated the use of tunnel kilns and replaced the beehive kilns that had been used for hundreds of years.
