• Robert Blake got his start in acting as a young child in the series “Our Gang,” better known as The Little Rascals, from 1939 to 1944. In later years, Robert Blake was charged with the murder of his wife, but was later acquitted.

• For seven seasons, four older women known as “The Golden Girls” shared a home in Miami, Florida. Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia lived in Blanche’s home, after the other three answered an ad on a grocery store bulletin board. Southern belle Blanche worked at the local art museum and Brooklyn-born Dorothy was a substitute teacher. Somewhat of a dingbat, Norwegian Rose hailed from St. Olaf, Minnesota. Education Prevents Dog Bites

Three calls in three days, each the same: two parents, their offspring and one growling, biting dog. The difference is only in the details.

One family is dealing with a Rottweiler that growls when they pet him on the head. One is confronted with a Beagle that “goes for the kids’ throats.” And one is relatively content with the fact that their dog is “just a growler.”

But “just a growler,” left to his own devices, could easily become a biter. And the big problem here is that children are involved.

One of the things I do with my free time is go to schools and educate children on how to handle dogs. Kids are kids, and dogs are dogs, and neither is educated on the other unless someone knowledgeable steps in to bridge the gap. This is largely the job of the parents, but parents unfortunately don’t always know what they’re doing when they combine child and canine under one roof.

Children want to hug dogs, to wrap their pudgy arms around their furry necks and squeeze in a display of affection. They’ll toddle right on up to a dog and greet him head-on, literally face to face.

They yank on ears, tug on tails, hop on board for a “pony” ride. They shriek and flail their arms around a dog, even hit a dog, not knowing any better.

Some parents, on the other hand, are under the misguided impression that dogs should be able to tolerate anything. And so they allow their children to engage in what is, by my lights, animal abuse.

I start my “class” by giving the kids a general introduction to the dog, the dog’s anatomy and the unique features of this very special companion animal. I talk about the dog’s phenomenal sense of scent, and how they use that first and foremost to learn about the world. I discuss the dog’s sense of hearing, and how they hear five times to 10 times better than we do, making them especially sensitive to loud music and voices -- including yelling the word “no.”

OK, it’s official. I’m going to call this column, “How to maximize your Social Security benefits” and spend the rest of my life answering questions about that issue. I’d guess that 80% of the emailed questions I’ve been getting lately come from readers who are confused about the strategy called “file and restrict.” In a nutshell, that procedure allows someone who is turning 66 before Jan. 2, 2020 to file for spousal benefits on a husband’s or wife’s Social Security record and then at 70, switch to 132 percent of his or her own retirement benefit.

Here is a sample from the emails I opened up this morning.

will start getting $1,800. And then Fred will file for spousal benefits on her record and get $900 per month. He will get that rate until he turns 70 years old in October 2023. So he will get 32 checks at $900 per month or $28,800. Then starting at age 70, he will switch to 132 percent of his retirement check, or $3,432 monthly for the rest of his life.

They went to our local Social Security office and were told that they cannot use the file and restrict strategy because it is scheduled to end on Jan. 2, 2020 and his wife doesn’t turn 66 until Februar y 2021. Are they right?

A:

I am about to turn 66 and my husband is 68. Neither of us has filed for Social Security. We want to save our benefits until we are 70. We went to our local Social Security office so that I could file and restrict on my husband’s record while we both wait to start our own Social Security at 70. But they said in order to do that, my husband would have May June 26, 10, 2018 2019 Vol. Vol.1415- -No. No.2422 to file for his benefits now. So are they wrong?

Or are we wrong?

A:

You are wrong and they are right. If you want to claim spousal benefits on your husband’s record, he must be getting his own Social Security retirement benefits first. So if you both want to wait until you are 70 before starting your Social Security benefits, you can’t play this file and restrict maximizing game. You need to sit down with a calculator and go over the numbers. Would you be better off if he took his Social Security now so you could claim spousal benefits and then switch to your own at 70? Or would it be a better deal for both of you if you each simply waited until you are 70 to start your benefits?

Come to think of it, there is a third option.

You could wait two more years until he is 70. Then he could file for his retirement benefits and get the 132 percent rate. At that time (you will be 68), you could file for spousal benefits on his account and at 70, switch to 132 percent of your retirement benefit.

Q:

I am 67 and getting my Social Security. My wife turns 62 this month. Can she do the file and restrict strategy? Can she file for spousal benefits on my record now and save her own benefit until she is 66 or even 70?

I have included this picture of a potter y dog I am curious about. It is one of a pair, and I think they are Labrador retrievers.

One is black, and the other is yellow. They have been stored away for years, and we found them when we were doing some spring-cleaning.

Each is about 5 inches long and 3 inches tall, including the base. Marked on the bottom are the words: “Markay - England - True Scale Dog Collection.”
