• Just before the race began, the wind miraculously died down. Bannister’s time at the half-mile mark was 1:58. Another runner took the lead, but with 300 yards to go, Bannister passed him with a burst of speed, crossing the finish line with an elapsed time of 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds.

• Bannister’s record only lasted 46 days, and was broken by Australian John Landy, who, on June 21, set the record at 3:58 at a race in Finland. On August 7, a race took place in front of 35,000 spectators and became known as the “Mile of the Century.” Both Bannister and Landy broke four minutes, with Bannister taking the race with 3:58.8 and Landy with 3:59.6.

• Bannister won the British and Empire championships that year, but at the end of the year, at the height of his career, he retired from competition to focus on his medical career.

He graduated from Oxford as a research and clinical neurologist.

• In addition to his medical duties, he became director of London’s National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, chairman of the British Sports Council, and the head of Pembroke College at Oxford. Bannister did not consider the 4-minute mile his greatest achievement, but rather his neurological research of the nervous system, publishing more than 80 papers.

• By July of 1940, the rabbit had a new look and a new name. The first official Bugs Bunny cartoon, “A Wild Hare,” was the first film in which Mel Blanc used a new voice for Bugs, one described as “a mixture of Brooklyn and Bronx accents.” It was also the first time that Bugs used his famous catchphrase, “What’s up, Doc?” The film’s writer/director Tex Avery said it was a common saying in his Texas hometown, and he thought nothing of adding it to the script. When it became popular, it was added to Bugs’ films permanently.

• Dell Comics featured Bugs in their “Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies” comic books beginning in 1941, and continued using him for 153 issues until 1954. From 1952 to 1983, Bugs was published in 245 issues of his own comic book, and another 81 issues of “Yosemite Sam and Bugs Bunny” from 1970 to 1983.

“A Wild Hare” was such a success that it received an Oscar nomination in 1940 for Best Animated Short Film. Another Academy Award nomination came along the following year for “Hiawatha’s Rabbit Hunt,” in which Mel Blanc voiced all the characters.

• Bugs starred in Merrie Melodies cartoons under the direction of Leon Schlesinger until 1944, when Schlesinger retired and sold his studio to Warner Brothers. The cartoons then became known as “Looney Tunes,” with “Buckaroo Bugs” marking the studio’s debut.

The word “acceptance” gets a bad rap.

Acceptance is not resignation. It’s not defeatist or complacent. Acceptance is powerful and progressive -- a symbol that marks that point in time when a person seizes control of their life.

Acceptance is the antidote to denial.

Denial fuels paralysis. It destroys relationships, drains bank accounts, limits potential, inhibits progress, wreaks havoc on our health and leaves questionable politicians in power for far too long. And it’s certainly no way to deal with a dog.

An acquaintance of mine is having trouble with his neighbors -- if you ask him. If you ask them, they’re having trouble with his dogs.

I asked him what the problem was, and he said, “My neighbors say my dogs bark when I’m not home, but I don’t think they do.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I recorded them while I was out.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I pretended to leave and then caught the neighbor red-handed provoking my dogs.”

Nope. For him it was enough to simply deny the possibility outright and assume his neighbors are lying. The irony is that he is an elementaryschool teacher. No one is more familiar with the frustrations of denial than a teacher of young children.

“Thank you for coming in, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Your son hid a dead squirrel in my desk drawer today.”

“Oh, our Bobby would never do that.”

Barking is a behavioral problem that frequently gets blown all out of proportion because of denial. Yes, barking is communication, it’s natural, it’s protection. But it’s also annoying and disruptive when excessive.

Barking isn’t the problem. Excessive barking is the problem. And if your dog is accused, the first step should be determining whether he is an excessive barker. If so, there are a multitude of options available to help manage or cure the problem behavior. But if we’re too busy denying it exists, they’ll be of little help.

The ‘Burial Benefit’ That Won’t Bury You

About a month ago, I wrote a column explaining what family members need to do when a loved one who was getting Social Security benefits dies. I primarily discussed what might need to be done about returning the last Social Security check (depending on the timing of the death). I also used that column to help a surviving spouse know what possible widow’s (or widower’s) benefits might be due and how to apply for them.

I only briefly mentioned the one-time $255 so called “burial benefit” that is sometimes payable. I guess that was a mistake because I got lots of follow-up emails asking me about that penurious, yet popular, Social Security benefit. I confused why I was getting all those questions because I thought I had recently covered the topic. After checking my records, I learned that “recent” column was from 2011. (Time flies when you are having fun.) So it’s time, once again, to discuss the infamous Social Security “death benefit.”

It didn’t start out as a death benefit, per se; at least not in the context it is thought of today. It certainly was never meant to be a “burial benefit,” as many people call it.

As part of the thinking that went into the original Social Security act passed in 1935, Congress realized that many of the new Social Security taxpayers would die before they ever had a chance to collect benefits. Or they would die without having earned enough “quarters of coverage” to be insured for survivor benefits for any dependents. So they decided to compensate the families of a loved one who died with some form of reimbursement for the Social Security taxes that the deceased had paid into the system. They set up a one-time benefit they called the “lump-sum death payment” and it was originally intended to reimburse the family with an amount equal to 3 1/2 percent of the money the deceased had paid into the system.

It was supposed to be a temporary benefit; Congress knew that as time passed, most workers would be paying a sufficient amount of money into Social Security that they would be insured for survivor benefits. In other words, when a taxpayer died, the widow or widower (and any minor children) would get monthly benefits. So this lumpsum payout would no longer be needed.

And as often happens with government programs, once you start paying a benefit, it’s hard to take it away. Over the years, there have been any number of proposals to eliminate the lumpsum death payment. But as miserly as the benefit is, it’s a popular feature of the Social Security program. Politicians soon learned that to tamper with it meant an automatic loss in the next election. So the “temporary benefit” never went away.

But occasionally, Congress has made some relatively minor adjustments to the original law. In 1954, they capped the benefit at $255 -- and it’s remained at that level ever since. And in 1983, when politicians were looking for ways to save money in the Social Security system, they restricted the payment of the one-time death payment only to a “spouse who was living with the deceased at the time of death.”

And that’s where we are today. We have an essentially meaningless “death benefit” paid only

started getting divorced widow’s benefits on his record. But I have two questions. Why did she have to return his Februar y check? And why didn’t she get the $255 death benefit?

to a widow or widower. Perhaps 50 years ago, $255 paid the cost of a funeral. Today, it barely covers the price of the flowers. If I were the king of the Social Security world, I would do one of two things.

Either I would raise the death benefit to something meaningful, like say $2,500. Or I would simply eliminate it.

But I’m a columnist, not a king. So all I can

do is explain the law and answer any questions you might have about it.

If you go back and read that prior column I mentioned earlier, you will learn why no one was due the proceeds of your father’s February Social Security payment. In a nutshell, it’s because Social Security benefits are not prorated. Because your father didn’t live the entire month of February, the check for that month had to be returned.

But there is an upside to that lack of proration. Your mother is going to get a divorced widow’s benefit for the whole month of February, even though she was a widow for only three days in that month.

As far the death benefit goes, the law says it can only be paid to a widow who was living with the deceased at the time of death. I assume your divorced parents weren’t living together. So that’s why the $255 can’t be paid to her.

is only paid on the account of someone who had worked and paid Social Security taxes. It sounds like your wife never did that because she was just receiving spousal benefits, not her own Social Security. And the money paid to a spouse is just an “add on” benefit. In other words, nothing was taken out of your retirement check to pay her. So your benefit rate will remain the same.

Is Acupuncture for Real?

DEAR DR. ROACH: You have mentioned acupuncture as a treatment for several conditions. I have read otherwise. How strong is the evidence for its use? -- R.L. ANSWER: The effectiveness of acupuncture for over 50 different medical conditions was reviewed by the Cochrane Collaboration, an evidence-based medicine group. Some of these show significant benefit; for example, acupuncture improves pain and function in people with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, when compared with placebo pills. Acupuncture also was better than doing nothing and better than some other treatments.

On the other hand, the Cochrane group could not find enough evidence to say whether acupuncture is effective for many other conditions, such as depression or shoulder pain. More importantly, some authors have argued that the benefit from acupuncture is a placebo response, and that the apparent benefit of acupuncture compared with a placebo pill is merely that acupuncture is a more effective placebo than just a pill.

There certainly is evidence that even surgery has a potential for a placebo response, and one interesting recent study showed that people with Parkinson’s disease got more improvement in motor skills from a placebo pill they were told cost $1,500 than they did with the identical placebo if they were told it cost only $100. This shows me that our minds have a tremendous ability to improve our bodies if we really believe we can.

I think that to a very large extent, and perhaps entirely, the real benefits seen by people who undergo acupuncture are a manifestation of the placebo response.

Acupuncture has far fewer side effects than many medications and helps people with a variety of conditions. Whether its effect is “real” or placebo is almost not an issue. ***

ing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well.

The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules).

Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can skim milk or oat bran cause gas? -- J.R. ANSWER: Both certainly can cause gas.

Skim milk contains the milk sugar lactose, to which many people are intolerant. In mild cases, it causes some gas; severe cases can cause diarrhea. Oat bran is a good fiber source, and all good sources of fiber can cause gas, especially if taken in amounts that are greater than the person is used to.

Taking a Veteran’s Name in Vain

Why is it some people have such a sense of entitlement that they think it’s OK to steal from veterans? Worse, why is it that the crooks think they’re not going to get caught?

A handful of government departments -- notably the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service’s OIG and the FBI -- banded together to nail yet another person who claimed that his small business was owned by a disabled veteran.

In this case, the suspect took in nearly $12 million in construction contracts from 2007 to 2015 while working on a few VA medical centers. The person he claimed was the disabled veteran didn’t actually work for the company.

Per the Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses program, at least 51 percent of a company claiming disabled veteran status has to be owned by the veteran.

Part of that program is to give at least 3 percent of all contracts to service-disabled veteranowned small businesses. More specifically, per the program requirements, the small business must “have one or more service-disabled veterans manage day-to-day operations and also make long-term decisions.” In other words, you can’t just lend your name to a business.

Inquiring minds want to know, however, how something like this can go on for so long. The fast track to discovery of a scam like this seems so simple: Once a year send a form to the disabled veteran owner and ask that it be signed in front of a notary to verify that he/she is indeed still involved in the day-to-day operations of “X” business. Lying would put their benefits at risk.

At this point the guy has only been indicted. But he did plead guilty to one of the accessory charges. * * *

Edwin M. Knowles China Co. was founded in Chester, West Virginia, around 1900. A second plant was added in Newell, West Virginia.

The limited-edition collector plates were issued from 1978 to 1985. Artist Raymond Kursar painted the original scenes.

Your set would probably be worth $125 to $225. *** Enclosed is the mark on the bottom of a porcelain female figurine that was given to me by a friend years ago. The figurine stands about 8 inches tall. She is wearing 18th-centur y pastel clothes, has blond hair and is holding a basket of flowers.

The set is a five-piece ser vice for 12 and includes a gravy boat, butter dish and large platters. It was purchased in 1930 and is in mint condition. Each piece is marked with a crown, crossed hammers and the words “Pirkenhammer - Czechoslovakia.”

Kranichfelder Porzellan Manufaktur made your figurine. The factory was located in Kranichfeld, Germany, from 1903 to 1910. The K.P.M. mark can be problematic. It was used by the Konigliche Porzellan Manufaktur, or the Royal Porcelain Factory, and later borrowed by a batch of factories, including Krister Porzellan Manufaktur and Kranichfelder Porzellan Manufaktur.

Your figurine might be worth $75 to $125.

Fischer & Mieg Pottery made your dinnerware set in Pirkenhammer, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. In 1811, Martin Fischer and Christopher Reichenbach acquired Johann List and Fredrich Hocke’s pottery company. When Fischer’s granddaughter later married Ludwig von Mieg in 1852, the name of the pottery was changed to Fischer & Mieg. Wilhelm and Victor Maier bought the factory in 1908 and continued to use the name until 1946.

The crossed hammers and crown are the symbols of the town, Pirkenhammer. Czechoslovakia was formed in 1918 and dissolved in 1993, becoming the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
