Mary Ann is famous for her potato salad.

She makes 10 pounds at a time, and it disappears faster than homemade ice cream on a hot summer day. Her secret (which she confides to only a chosen few) is sweet pickle juice. Not pickles, not relish -- only the juice. And lots of it.

So, I wondered if there might be other uses for the briny stuff. A quick search through the multiple thousands of tips readers have sent to me over the years, plus research online came up amazingly positive!

I had no idea that pickle juice had so many health benefits or could be used in so many ways around the kitchen! Look at this!

I usually devote an entire column to just one subject so that I can thoroughly cover all the nuances. But today I’m going to go for a record.

I will see if I can answer a dozen questions in the limited space I have. Obviously, the answers will be short and to the point.

Q:

If I wait until 70 to file for Social Security, will my wife’s eventual widow’s benefit include the delayed retirement credits I will earn?

A:

Yes. Her spousal rate while you are alive is based on your age 66 amount. But her widow’s benefit is based on your age 70 rate.

Q:

I am almost 65 and still working and covered by my employer’s insurance. Do I need to file for Medicare?

A:

You probably should file for Part A Medicare (hospital insurance) because it’s free.

But you won’t need to take Part B Medicare (doctor’s insurance), which usually costs about $140 per month, until you retire and lose your employer’s coverage.

Q:

My wife took her Social Security at 62. Will that reduce the widow’s benefit she will get on my record someday?

A:

No. Her widow’s rate is really based on one thing only: her age when you die. Assuming she is 66 or older when that happens, she will get a 100 percent widow’s benefit on your record -- no matter when she took her own Social Security.

I am 62 and retired. I wanted to

wait until 66 to start my Social Security. But I have a 32-year-old son who with Down syndrome. Can he get benefits on my account now while I wait until 66?

A:

No. You must be signed up for So cial Security before your son can get benefits on your record. Because he would be due an amount equal to 50 percent of your full retirement rate, that might be an incentive for you to file for your Social Security now.

Q:

I just paid a whopping tax bill on

my Social Security benefits. Can I have taxes withheld from my Social Security checks so I’m not hit with a big bill when I file my tax return?

A: Yes, you can. Call Social Security at 800-772-1213 to set that up.

Q:

If I move to Costa Rica, can I get

my Social Security checks there?

I am 72 and still working. I have no intention of retiring anytime soon. How long can I delay starting my Social Security to get the maximum benefit?

A: You’re well past the deadline. Once you are older than 70, extra credits are no longer added to your Social Security check. So you are gaining nothing by not filing for Social Security. Do it tomorrow. At least you can claim 6 months’ worth of retroactive benefits.

Q:

I am 62 and am ashamed to admit I fathered a child out of wedlock. He is now 6 years old. Will he get any of my Social Security?

A: Yes. He will get an amount equal to 50

percent of your full retirement rate while you are alive, and 75 percent after you die -- until he is 18 years old.

Versatile Female Artist Was a Native of Indiana Q:

I bought an antique framed picture, and when I removed the picture, I discovered this watercolor painting behind it.

Actually, I purchased it just because I liked the frame. It appears to be an original Maude Kaufman Eggemeyer painting. The overall measurements are approximately 11 inches by 13 inches.

Do you know if it is of any value?

A:

Maude Eggemeyer was a well-known Indiana artist. She was born in 1877 in New Castle, Indiana, and died in 1959 in North Carolina. Eggemeyer’s father, William S. Kaufman, was a wellknown architect and influenced his daughter’s art.

Eggemeyer studied at Maude K. Eggemeyer was a versitile Earlham Colartist and native of Indiana. lege and the Art Academy of Cincinnati; she worked with the Overbeck sisters, who were also Indiana artists.

Eggemeyer was versatile and specialized in painting still lifes, garden scenes and romantic scenes.

She produced lithographs, watercolors, oils, prints and sculptures. She married Elmer Eggemeyer, the Richmond, Indiana, postmaster.

While living in Richmond, she was part of the Richmond Group Artists. Her paintings can be seen in museums including the Indiana State Museum, Haan Mansion Museum of Art and Richmond Art Museum.

Eggemeyer’s watercolor painting of romantic courting couples would probably be worth $125 to $225. ***

Enclosed is the mark that is on the bottom of two small bisque figurines I have.

Objects marked “Occupied Japan” were made during the Allied occupation of Japan from Sept. 2, 1945, to April 28, 1952.

OCCUPIED JAPAN

Charles and Norman Sadek founded the Charles Sadek Import Co. in 1936 in New Rochelle, New York. They import a huge variety of high-end giftware, dinnerware and kitchenware -- not just from Japan, but around the world. They are still in business today and have showrooms in Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York, according to their website.

The name “Andrea” is attributed to Charles’ daughter, Andrea. As an adult, she is committed to the design of new company products.

Some objects were only marked “Japan” during the occupation. Collectors are interested only in pieces that have the complete mark, “Occupied Japan.”

The value of your figurines would probably be worth $25 to $50.

Many amateurs may struggle hitting high, soft wedge shots around the green due to improper concept. Severely opening the clubface, using a lot of “wrist action” or making a big, aggressive swing are all poor ways for most golfers to play a high lofted shot.

The backstroke hides one of the tour players’ top secrets in that they use the wrists, forearms, and set-up to create a “Toe Up” position with the clubhead. By minimizing the lean of the club at address, the clubface can rotate to a toe up position much easier with the hands and arms.

Still, the right arm must gently fold as the left arm makes an active rotation. Coupled with the left wrist staying bent (or cupped) as the wrist hinges, the clubhead can rotate away from the ball. This position can be checked when the clubhead is waist to shoulder high in the backstroke. Think “Toe Up” or vertically align the leading edge.

Excessive leaning of the club at address, closing in the clubface, or using the left wrist in a “knuckles down” manner in the backstroke will all tend to make the clubface appear closed in this same area.
