• During the two World Wars, the Bausch and Lomb company was asked to provide troops with gunsights, periscopes, telescopes, target finders, and searchlight mirrors. The U.S. government became their biggest customer and the company grew very quickly. By the 1940s, military products represented 70% of their total production.

• Because pilots suffered from sunlight glare making it difficult to quickly focus between inside and outside the cockpit, the company produced sunglasses that used a polarized filter to absorb bright light. They were also specially shaped with a large oval frame to shield an aviator’s eyes which needed to repeatedly glance down to see the instrument panel. These glasses were aptly dubbed “Ray Bans” because they effectively ban the glare of the sun's rays. Ray Bans became enormously popular and aviator sunglasses are still sold today.

• One day Bausch happened upon a discarded piece of Vulcanite rubber. After conducting some experiments with the substance, he concluded that he could use the material to make eyeglass frames. At that time, eyeglasses were made from gold, tortoise shell, or horn.

• After World War II ended, the cinema industry experienced tremendous rapid growth. The Bausch & Lomb company began producing lenses for movie cameras and theater projectors, eventually inventing the process that allowed theaters to double the size of their movie screens.

There are two things you mentioned that I need to explain to my readers. The first is your reference to “POMS.” That stands for Program Operations Manual System. It is essentially the bible for SSA employees that spells out how every single Social Security rule and regulation should be administered and implemented.

It’s called a “manual system” because back in my day (I worked with the SSA from 1973 until 2005), those guidelines were printed on paper and stored in 3-ring binders. Each of us claims technicians had about 20 such binders in a bookshelf behind our desks. And we would spend an hour almost every morning before the office doors opened reading and then filing updates to our POMS manuals.

Gosh, that all seems so archaic. Today, of course, everything is digitized and online. In fact, anyone can access POMS. Go to www.socialsecurity.gov and near the top of the home page, open up the “Menu” icon and then scroll down near the bottom of the page that pops up and click on “Program Rules.” You will find POMS under “Employee Operating Instructions.”

The other thing I want to talk about is your job title. How does it feel to be one of a dying breed?

Let me explain to my readers what I mean. Before the internet, and even before SSA had a national 800 number, the agency prided itself on its one-toone personal service. Not only were there Social Security offices in almost every decent-sized town in the country, but also we took that service on the road. And the employees who did that were called “field representatives.”

Some of my fondest memories of my early career with SSA came from working as a field rep.

For example, while working out of the Everett, Washington, Social Security office, I would take a ferry each week to an island in Puget Sound and set up shop for a day at the local senior citizens center. And then, a couple days later, I would drive up to a small mountain town in the Cascades and become “Mr. Social Security” to the local residents.

The advent of online services and nationwide calling centers greatly diminished the need for SSA to send representatives to these remote outposts. So “field reps” are the dinosaurs of SSA. But it’s good to know that at least one of you is still around. And again, thanks for the kind words. Now pay attention to what another SSA rep has to say

My mother has been sorting through her things in preparation for her move to a retirement community. She gave the bowl to me because I always admired it.

Punch Bowl Set is Decorated with German Castles Q:

I have enclosed a photo of a covered punch bowl and matching mugs. The lid is decorated with leaves, vines and grapes in relief, and the handle is a cherub holding a pitcher. The punch bowl is decorated with panels of castle scenes that include: Burg Sooneck, Burg Rheinstein, Marksburg, Burg Lahneck and Godesburg. The eight matching mugs are also decorated with scenes in relief.

“Made in Germany -- 3361,” is marked on the bottom of the punch bowl.

We would appreciate any information regarding the use of our set, its histor y and value.

The mark you provided was used by exporters and brothers Ichizaemon and Toyo Morimura. They started out in Japan as a trading company in 1876. During the 1890s, they manufactured and exported fine porcelain specifically designed to appeal to the West. They established offices and showrooms in New York.

According to the Tariff Act of 1890, any object imported to the United States must be marked with the origin of the country. “Nippon” is the Japanese word for Japan and was included with marks from 1891 to around 1921. After that, they used Japan.

Your hand-painted porcelain bowl was made in the early 1900s and would probably be worth $75 to $125.

This stoneware punch bowl set was made in the early 1900s in Germany.

Your stoneware punch bowl can be used for hot mulled wine, cider or rum punch. Without the maker’s name, it can be difficult to identify the factory where it was made.

Having said that, your set was probably made by Simon Peter Gerz pottery in Hohr-Grenzhausen, Germany. The word “burg” means castle in the German language, not to be confused with the word “berg,” which means mountain. The number on your piece, 3361, is the design number.

Your punch bowl and matching mugs were made in the early 1900s and might be worth $225 to $275. ***
