Researchers theorize that the high rate of multiple births in this region is due to the fact that these areas have a higher concentration of wealthier women who have pursued careers, postponed childbearing until later, and subsequently sought reproductive assistance.

The state with the lowest rate of twin births is New Mexico, with only 2.4 twins born out of every 100 births. New Mexico is followed by Arizona and Arkansas.

INFLUENCING FACTORS

• Research shows that conceiving twins is more common among older women (62% of twins are born to mothers over the age of 30), taller women, women who are overweight, and women who are breastfeeding at the time they get pregnant.

• Twins are most commonly born to mothers between the age of 30 and 39, likely due to the fact that older women tend to release more than one egg per cycle.

• The word “gemini” is the Latin word for twins.

The constellation Gemini was named for mythological twins, Pollux and Castor, whose mother was Leda. As the legend goes, Leda was seduced by Zeus (who took the form of a swan) and later that evening also shared a bed with her husband, Tyndareus, king of Sparta. As a result, she gave birth to fraternal twins with different fathers. Although this is all according to mythology, it is actually possible for this to happen in real life, since sperm can survive for up to five days.

• The small Brazilian village of São Pedro consists of about 350 citizens, most of whom are immigrants of German descent. Doctors were perplexed to find that the birth rate of twins in the village was far higher than normal, reaching one in ten births, whereas throughout the rest of Brazil, only one percent of births are twins. Studies revealed that the women in the village shared a single “hyper-ovulation” gene making it far more likely that they would conceive twins. The issue was compounded by inbreeding among them.

Amazing Ways to Use Hydrogen Peroxide Around the House

Last week, I heard from one of my read® ers who wrote about hydrogen peroxide -- someby Maryabout Hunt in the past but not so thing I’ve written much in the context of this reader’s personal report.

I loved her story and outcome but needed to confirm that hydrogen peroxide is safe, reasonable and recommended as a mouthwash.

In the process, I ran into a whole lot more than I was looking for: multiple uses for hydrogen peroxide around the house -- some new, some not so new but perhaps forgotten.

* In Washington state it once was illegal to carry a concealed weapon that was more than 6 feet in length. * Dominique Bouhours, a Frenchman who lived in the 17th century, was a priest, an essayist and a grammarian. The love of language may have been closest to his heart, though; it’s been reported that the final words he uttered on his deathbed were, “I am about to -- or I am going to -- die; either expression is used.” * According to a survey by the National Association of Convenience Stores, 11 percent of adult Americans have at some point in their lives worked at a convenience store or gas station. For 3 percent of adults, that was their first job.

KITCHEN COUNTERS

Clean your counters and tabletops with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters.

* Those who study such things claim that to get a truly random mix in a deck of playing cards, the deck must be shuffled seven times.

CUTTING BOARD

After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour hydrogen peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved hydrogen peroxide as a sanitizer.

I was facing a $1600 cost for scaling and root-planing for a mild to medium case of gingivitis.

“While I was deciding when to make the appointment, I spoke with a coworker who was a part-time dental hygienist. She recommended hydrogen peroxide as a pre-brush rinse. I decided to give it a try.

“I started this more than 8 years ago and I continue to have excellent checkups. I’m not saying this will cure anything or prevent cavities but it is another tool in the box for dental care. My gums are healthier with little to no bleeding and very, very minor pain during the cleaning.

I’m 54 years old with ‘soft’ teeth prone to cavities and gingivitis and this was something easy to incorporate into my routine.”

According to the Intelligent Dental website, hydrogen peroxide can be used safely as a mouthwash, provided the Food and Drug Administration approved 1 to 3 percent concentration mixed with equal parts water is strictly adhered to. In this way, it can be used to treat trench mouth, gingivitis and plaque and, in some cases, help to whiten your teeth.

It is extremely important to stick to the FDA-recommended concentration of 1 to 3 percent that can be bought in drugstores and pharmacies. Using too high a concentration of peroxide is known to cause skin injuries, and its ingestion is possibly fatal, especially at 35 percent concentration. Anything above 3 percent grade would be considered unsafe to use as a mouthwash.

The Truth About Aggressive Dogs

Remember that classic scene from “A Few Good Men,” the one that featured Jack Nicholson, decked out in full military regalia, on the witness stand, puffing his chest and bellowing, “You can’t handle the truth!”? Well, there are times when I can relate. Take the following letter from a reader:

“I have two dogs: a lab-pit mix I raised from 8 weeks old who has no problems with other dogs or people, and Augie, a German shepherd I picked up at 4 months of age who I believe was subjected to some abuse before I got him.

“Augie weighs 95 pounds and has an aggressive personality. I’ve studied and tried all of the aggressive dog tests on your website, and he does not seem to fit any of them. He is not objector food-possessive. The closest would be dominantaggressive. However, he does not challenge or fear me in any way I can measure using your tests.

“He can be aggressive with strangers, but will back off at the command ‘no’ from me or even from them. I can put him on his side in a park full of active strangers, and as long as no one gets too close, he will stay down until I give him the command to get up.

“I once dog-sat a friend’s small dog, and Augie was very aggressive in his reaction to the other dog the first day. After 24 hours, I was able to let the two dogs meet and interact. By the end of that day, they were fast friends playing like puppies.

Augie isn’t mean; he’s just not socialized and may be fear-aggressive with other dogs.

“At home, there are no problems. Both of my dogs walk without pulling and heel on leash.

We walk through the park for about 40 minutes nearly every day. When walking in the park, both dogs are fine except when another dog appears. If the strange dog is closer than 50 feet, Augie goes into aggressive bark mode. I’ve tried a couple of the ‘wrong’ methods to resolve this problem and failed due to his complete focus on the other dogs.

“Based on an Uncle Matty PBS segment, I’ve lately been using a mister bottle with plain water to distract him and get his focus off the other dog. Once I get his focus on me, he almost always listens -- but not if the other dog is also aggressive.

Almost daily, for the past 22 years that I’ve been writing this column, I get emails from people voicing opinions about Social Security that are illinformed -- and often, downright wacky. It surprises and even saddens me that people who hold these strange beliefs feel obligated to spread their ignorance to friends and strangers alike. I’ve saved a couple examples of this phenomenon and present them here today. They go from the merely uninformed to the downright ridiculous.

Q:

Why don’t you make people aware of the sneaky and systematic reduction in Social Security benefits that has been carried out for years now? We all know a Social Security benefit is based on your highest 35 years of earnings -- but only up to the maximum tax for each particular year. For example, in 1956, the Social Security tax applied to only the first $4,200 of earnings. But in 2019, it was $132,900. Most workers in 1956 met the $4,200 limit. But how many people do you know who are making $132,900 or more?

The net result is a secret reduction in benefits for those millions of retirees who don’t make the $132,900 threshold. How come you, and politicians, don’t talk about this hidden fact?

A:

Well, I can’t answer for politicians. But I can tell you why I don’t talk about it. And that’s because what you are saying doesn’t make sense!

You are right that a Social Security retirement benefit is based on your highest 35 years of earnings. So whatever your earnings are, you get a benefit based on your average income over those years, period. There is nothing sneaky about that.

Your premise seems to be based on a theory that there is some kind of bonus paid to people who reach the maximum taxable earnings limit each year. There is no such bonus. It is true that if you do have maximum earnings for all 35 years, you will get a higher benefit (because you had a higher income and paid more taxes) than someone who has lower earnings.

But the flip side of that argument is also bogus. In other words, you are just flat-out wrong when you say that people with lower earnings suffer some kind of secret Social Security reduction. They do not. They will get a lower benefit than those who had maximum earnings, but they will get the benefit they deserve based on their lower earnings. I can’t emphasize this point enough. There is no secret reduction in benefits for someone with lower earnings.

In fact, just the opposite is true. The Social Security retirement benefit formula has always been skewed to give lower-income people a better rate of return than their higher paid counterparts.

That formula is way too complex to explain in today’s column. Simply put, very low wage earners will get a benefit that represents up to 90 percent of their preretirement income. Very high wage earners might get 30 percent or so. Of course, 30 percent of a rich person’s income will result in a higher Social Security benefit than 90 percent of a poor person’s income. But as a percentage of what they kicked into the system, lower wage earners get a much better deal.

You have a set of chintzware, and the pattern is “Melody.” It was made by Shelley Potteries Ltd. in Longton, Staffordshire, England. The company was founded in 1925.

Victorian Chair Has Rocked Four Generations Q:

I have enclosed a photo of an antique rocking chair that has been passed down in my family for at least four generations. It was originally purchased in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1865. The frame is mahogany and has the original finish. It has been reupholstered in red velvet, is 34 inches tall and is in excellent condition. The top rail is decorated with car ved leaves and fruit.

I am not interested is selling my rocker but would like to know its approximate value.

A:

The curved top rail with the carved crest; upholstered open arms; flat front legs; and canted, square back legs are typical of Victorian furniture made between 1860 and 1875.

This mark is on the bottom a set of four porcelain cups and saucers that I have.

My aunt gave them to me ten years ago. She has since passed away, and I regret never asking her about the set.

Each piece is decorated with pink, yellow and blue petite flowers against a light-blue background. The handles and the edges are trimmed in gold. My aunt only used them on special occasions, and they are in mint condition.

I treasure my set and would never part with it but would like to know its vintage, who made it, and its value.

Chintzware is the name of earthenware, porcelain or bone china that was decorated with pastel flowers against blue or green backgrounds.

There was a large variety of patterns inspired by English gardens and chintz fabric patterns.

Several other English factories also produced the popular chintz patterns. Shelley Ltd. was taken over by Doulton & Co. in 1971. Chintzware continues to be popular with collectors.

Your set of six cups and saucers was made around 1950 and would probably be worth $250 to $450.

• Billy Leon McCrary and his identical twin brother Benny Loyd McCrary (born December 7, 1946) made their living as professional wrestlers. They worked under the stage name of The McGuire Twins which they adopted after finding that announcers had difficulty pronouncing the name “McCrary.” They are listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Heaviest Twins.
