• In addition to his rescue efforts, Irwin and his father also discovered a new species of snapping turtle in the early 1990s. The freshwater turtle was named Elseya irwini after its discoverers.

• Irwin branched out in film with 2002’s “The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course,” which was awarded the “Best Family Feature Film” at the Young Artist Awards. He also made an appearance in Eddie Murphy’s “Doctor Doolittle” that same year. Name That Commissioner I am going to give you a series of names.

I would give any reader a hundred bucks if he or she could tell me who these people are and what they all have in common. Here are the names: Stanford Ross. William Driver. John Svahn. Martha McSteen. Dorcas Hardy. Gwendolyn King. Shirley Chater. Kenneth Apfel. Michael Astrue.

So, who are they? They are nine of the past 29 commissioners of Social Security. The commissioner of Social Security is the top spot within the Social Security Administration. He or she is responsible for running one of the largest agencies in the federal government. This includes maintaining Social Security numbers and earnings records for nearly every working American and paying retirement, disability and survivor benefits to about 62 million people every month.

Yet, almost no one knows who these people are. Most folks can probably name the FBI director or the head of the CIA. But SSA is one of the many federal agencies whose top dog might as well be named Underdog. Who heads the Veterans Administration? Who is the commissioner of the IRS? Who runs the Federal Highway Administration?

How about the Bureau of Labor Statistics? The heads of these and so many other federal agencies are almost always nameless political appointees.

And therein lies a story I’d like to tell.

For part of my career with the SSA, I worked for several Social Security commissioners.

Usually in the role of a speechwriter. Sometimes as an agency press officer (well, OK, deputy press officer). By no means was I a major player on any commissioner’s staff. But, as I used to say, “At least I was in the room.” In other words, if the commissioner had a meeting with his or her top staff, I might be sitting in a chair in the corner -- usually taking notes.

So I got to know a lot about the inner workings of the agency. I learned what the head of a big agency like the SSA really does. One of the commissioners I worked for (I won’t name names) was President Ronald Reagan’s pick to head Social Security. And one time, soon after she was appointed, she told me that Reagan told her this: “You really have only one job. Make sure those damn checks go out on time every month!”

But let’s be honest about that. The issuance of Social Security checks is pretty institutionalized.

It’s built into the nature of the bureaucracy. Social Security checks have gone out on time every month for about 80 years now. Donald Duck could be the commissioner of Social Security, and the checks still would go out like clockwork each month. After all, commissioners come and go. It’s the dedicated civil servants who have been with the agency for decades who really keep the place humming along and make sure those checks always go out in a timely manner.

So what the commissioner really does -what the head of any large organization really does -- is set the tone for how services will be provided and how staff will be allocated to provide those services. And he or she also sets goals. And for so many years, one of the top goals of every commissioner who ran the SSA, whether appointed by a Democratic or Republican president, was to improve the processing of Social Security disability claims.

Water Bucket Benches Were Kept Outside the Kitchen Q:

This is a photo of an antique pine bench that belonged to my parents when they lived in Florida. When they gave it to me, they told me it was a water bench. It is approximately 17 inches high and 33 inches wide.

Although I think it has been refinished, there are signs of it being used over the years.

My parents have since passed away, and now I wish I had asked them more questions about its histor y.

I hope you can tell me something about its age, origin and value.

You have a character/figural stein that was made by Reinhold Merkelbach. The factory was founded in the Westerwald town of Hohr, Germany, in 1845 by Wilhelm Merkelbach. They made 29 character steins in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some had pewter lid rims and were numbered. “Musterschutz” is the German word that means an object is “protected against copying,” the equivalent to the United States term, “copyrighted.”

The mark you provided was used from 1882 to 1933. Your stein would probably be worth $325 to $499.

You have an antique water bucket bench. Many similar benches were made in the 1800s in Pennsylvania. Because of the simplicity of its sturdy structure and economy of design, it falls into the category of primitive antiques.

Before the industrial revolution, primitive furniture was usually handmade by carpenters or farmers. They used local woods, often pine or birch, to make benches, chairs, tables, cupboards and chests. Some pieces were painted, wood-grained or decorated with stenciling.

Before indoor plumbing, water bucket benches were often placed just outside the kitchen door near the water pump. Someone in the family helped to keep the buckets full and easy to reach for the homemaker who was working in the kitchen, cleaning and cooking. The benches were exposed to the weather, and those that survived often show the effects of the elements. Today, collectors find the clean lines and lack of adornment of antique water bucket benches fit nicely into homes. They can serve as benches in mudrooms and entrances.

The total death toll from the Pearl Harbor attack was 2,403 American citizens, including 2,335 military personnel and 68 civilians. The Japanese loss was 64 Navy members and 29 out of their 353 attacking aircraft.

• Ten days after the attack, Admiral Husband Kimmel, naval commander at Pearl Harbor, and Lt. General Walter Short, U.S. Army commander, were relieved of their duties. They were subject to several investigations, and finally forced into early retirement. Both men were eventually exonerated posthumously in 1999 by the U.S. Senate.

• Now designated as a National Historic Landmark with a shrine straddling its sunken remains, the USS Arizona memorial receives more than two million visitors annually. The battleship is submerged in less than 40 feet of water, but because its armaments and superstructures were since removed, the only portion now visible above water is the lower portion of a main gun turret. Of the 1,177 men who died on board, only 229 bodies were recovered. Twenty-three sets of brothers aboard the Arizona perished.

The ship is honored today as a National War Grave. �

When I’m on the course with a student who’s facing a long shot from the rough, they typically reach for their 3 wood without hesitation. This particular problem is magnified when trying to carry a water hazard or bunker. It seems that the yardage takes precedence over the lie in most of the decisions.

Unfortunately, when it comes to a battle between the 3 wood and a hybrid…. the hybrid wins.

Due to a poor lie in most of these cases, a low lofted (14 degrees), long shafted, high center of gravity clubhead makes it difficult to get a clean hit or much height on the shot. The hybrid, with its shorter shaft, higher loft (17 degrees), and lower center of gravity, gives average swing speeds a chance to hit pro-like shots.
