• You’ve heard it said that life passes by in a blink of an eye. Did you know that we spend almost 10% of our waking hours with our eyes closed, blinking? Each blink lasts less than 1/10th of a second, and takes place about 25,000 times a day, about every 12 to 15 seconds. A person blinks more when talking, but less when reading or staring at a computer screen. Because we blink less often during screen time, that’s what causes our eyes to feel tired. Blinking keeps our eyes lubricated as well as clearing the eye of foreign particles.

• While our fingerprints have 40 distinctive characteristics, the iris, the colored part of the eye, has 256. For this reason eye scans are gaining widespread use for security purposes.

• One of the most common eye injuries is a result of poking the eyeball with a mascara wand! But the good news is that the cornea is the fastest healing tissue in the human body, taking only about 48 hours to repair a minor scratch on its surface. The cornea is also the only avascular tissue in the human body, meaning it does not contain any blood vessels.

• The iris, that colored part of the eye, has an

I have some good news for you: Season eight episodes of this critically acclaimed British TV series are now airing on public television stations. Why the delay? Apparently, the Acorn TV network had acquired exclusive rights to air “Doc Martin,” which meant that PBS couldn’t any longer. However, the two entities have reached an agreement. New episodes will air first on Acorn, a subscription service that streams primarily British content, and later will be available on PBS stations.

While the upcoming ninth -- and final -- season of “Doc Martin” won’t be filmed until this summer, it will air on Acorn later in 2019 and then subsequently on PBS.

Having two dogs in the house can be richly rewarding -- if it’s done right. Going from no dogs to two dogs in one fell swoop is not doing it right.

Bringing a dog into your house is a big responsibility. You have a new personality to get to know. You have things to learn about each other, things to teach each other, and you need time to bond. $99This is a one-on-one process. Having two dogs doesn’t change that. It just means you’ll have to devote more time in each day to doing it -- twice as much time.

Dogs, like people, are individuals. They have their own personalities, their own likes and dislikes, their own way of relating, their own needs.

Having two dogs doesn’t mean having two dogs that are exactly the same. That’s impossible.

One of the problems that arise from getting more than one dog at the same time boils down to pecking order. Dogs are pack animals. It is the dog owner’s job to establish him or herself as the alpha.

But many people fail to realize this or don’t know how to accomplish it. And if the dog owner doesn’t step up, one of the dogs will. Someone has to be the leader of the pack.

It is much easier for you, the dog owner, to secure that role if you only have to convince one dog at a time.

Another problem that comes with getting two dogs at once is fear-aggression. One of the dogs will inevitably develop a shy personality.

When coupled with his more assertive, dominant “friend,” he’ll tend to withdraw. This, in turn, leads to a lesser degree of socialization for the shy dog,

High Anxiety and Social Security Maximizing Madness

My wife used to thank me, with her tongue firmly planted in her cheek, for never being rich.

She would say, “It seems to me that the more money people have, the more they worry about it.”

And gosh, did those words of wisdom come home to me these past couple of weeks, following yet another column I wrote about the maximizing Social Security madness. My inbox has been crammed with hundreds of emails from frantic seniors who are worried sick they might make a decision about when to take their Social Security benefits that will result in them possibly leaving a few bucks on the table.

Of course, I certainly understand that having more money is better than not having enough.

But I can’t tell you how many married seniors have emailed lately telling me that they have their home paid off, they have multiple cars and vacation homes -- and many of them have close to, or even more than, a million dollars in investments.

And they are losing sleep because they can’t decide when to start their Social Security benefits. They wonder if option A, in which they will get let’s say $60,000 in combined benefits per year starting at an early age, is better than option B, in which they will get maybe $72,000 in annual benefits starting at a later age.

I just want to tell these people to chill out and relax! No matter which way they go, they are financially light-years ahead of the average Social Security beneficiary who is trying to decide if she should use this month’s Social Security check to pay her past-due medical bills or to buy groceries!

Also, to those folks who ask me to help them decide what to do, I tell them they are talking to the wrong person. I am NOT a financial planner. I am just an old, retired Social Security guy who knows Social Security rules inside and out. So, I can tell them how the rules work. But I can’t tell them what to do.

And if you need further proof that I am the wrong guy to ask for financial advice, consider this: my wife and I started our reduced Social Security benefits at age 62. Any financial planner would have told us we were nuts. The prevailing financial wisdom is to delay taking your benefits for as long as possible in order to get a higher monthly rate.

But guess what? We don’t care. For more than 12 years now, we have been having way too much fun spending our reduced retirement benefits. And if we come out on the short end of the Social Security stick in the long run ... well again, so what? We couldn’t care less.

Recently, I inherited a set of dinner ware that is a ser vice for eight. The enclosed mark is on each piece. The dishes are white with a pink band on the border and trimmed in gold. The set is in excellent condition. Several ser ving pieces are missing, and I haven’t had any luck finding them in antiques shops.

Do you have any advice on how to find the missing dishes? Also, please provide information on the vintage and value of my set.

Sewing Machine Relies on Foot Power Q:

This foot-powered (treadle) sewing machine is called “The Wanamaker.” It was given to my mother in the early 1900s and is in good working condition. It includes the original wood cabinet and case. The treadle is cast iron, and there are storage drawers on either side. There is a leaf that opens up to provide more workspace. I have been unable to find any serial numbers on the machine or the cabinet.

Any information regarding the histor y and value, if any, will be ver y much appreciated.

by W. S. George Pottery Company. In 1904, William Shaw George Pottery Company George purchased made dinnerware, hotel the controlling interware and decorative ware. est in the East Palestine Pottery Company that was located in East Palestine, Ohio. Four years later, he changed the name to W. S. George Pottery Company. It specialized in semi-porcelain dinnerware, hotel ware and decorative ware.

Much of its dinnerware was made in specific shapes and decorated with different patterns.

The names of the shapes were included with the mark, and collectors mistakenly assume “Derwood” to be the pattern name. “Derwood” is the name of the shape of your dishes and was made from 1911 till the 1950s. “Rhapsody” is the name of the pattern and was in production from 1945 to 1949.

Search the internet for one of the matching companies to find the missing dishes. Your set of dinnerware would probably be worth $125 to $225.

John Wanamaker opened his first store in Philadelphia in the late 1800s.

He was an innovative and successful businessman who was guided by his four principles: a single price tag, a guarantee, cash payment for his products and a cash refund. Before he initiated his single price tag, customers were expected to haggle over the price. Customers were happy with the straightforward method, and Wanamaker was rewarded with growing sales.

Wanamaker expanded his store to include women’s clothing, house wares and dry goods. He was also the first to offer white sales. He promoted his department store to be a one-stop shop. Eventually, he opened stores in New York and London and Paris.

Your sewing machine with an oak cabinet was made in the early 1900s and would probably be worth $100 to $225.
