Holiday Tunes for Dog Lovers

Thanksgiving is now behind us, and everyone’s humming a holiday tune. Here’s a dog lover’s take on some all-time favorites:

It Must Have Been the Mistletoe: No, this song isn’t about a dog that ate the mistletoe and spent Christmas Day with the vet. But it could be.

Mistletoe and poinsettias are toxic to dogs (and cats). The results of ingestion range from oral irritation to respiratory distress to gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, vomiting and the potential for dehydration that follows such symptoms.

Mistletoe poisoning is rare, but if consumed in large quantities, it can be fatal.

Sleigh Ride: This one always gets me. I hear it and am compelled to remind parents everywhere that children should not be allowed to harness the family dog and have him drag them around the yard on a mock sled. It’s fun for the kid, not for the dog.

O Christmas Tree: Oh, where to begin? The traditional Christmas tree, with its lights and tinsel and delicate ornaments, is too much temptation for some canines. Whether slurping the sap-infested water meant for the tree, barking at flashing lights or pawing at shiny strands of tinsel and dangling glass balls, Christmas trees and dogs go together like mistletoe and former lovers.

Burn Little Candles: This sweet Chanukah song for kids also serves as a reminder for dog owners that flickering candles should never be left within reach of a wagging tail. Fire of any kind requires adult supervision. And remember to unplug those tree lights at night and when you aren’t home.

Jingle Bells, Silver Bells, Carol of the Bells: Bells, bells, bells! They’re enough to drive a pooch straight to the spiked eggnog. If your dog is shy, timid or nervous around noise, keep the bells to a minimum -- and not attached to his collar.

Deck the Halls: If you must deck your halls with boughs of real holly, take precautions to keep the leaves and berries off the floors and away from pets. Otherwise, you just might falalalala all the way to the emergency animal hospital. Holly gets its own spot on this list because it is potentially fatal if ingested by your dog (or cat). Decorate with faux holly to keep things jolly.

It is surely possible to be somewhere in the United States in the Christmas season without ready access to a performance of Handel’s “Messiah,” perhaps in the middle of Denali National Park or the Mojave Desert.

The work is ubiquitous and deserves every bit of its popularity. It is a Christian masterpiece known by everyone, a soaring work of genius that never loses its ability to astonish and inspire, whether at a performance of the New York Philharmonic or at a local church singalong.

After hearing it performed on Christmas Day in 1843, Ralph Waldo Emerson described a common reaction, “I walked in the bright paths of sound, and liked it best when the long continuance of a chorus had made the ear insensible to music, made it as if there was none; then I was quite solitary and at ease in the melodious uproar.”

In his book, “Messiah: The Composition and Afterlife of Handel’s Masterpiece,” Jonathan Keates traces the history of the work.

A native German who lived in London, G.F. Handel was extraordinarily prolific, composing roughly 40 operas and 30 oratorios. His towering status isn’t in question. Beethoven, born nearly a hundred years later, deemed him “the master of us all.”

Although the “Messiah” is invariably called “Handel’s Messiah,” it was a collaboration. The librettist Charles Jennens, a devout Christian, provided the composer with a “scriptural collection,” the Biblical quotations that make up the text.

Jennens wrote a friend that he hoped Handel “will lay out his whole genius and skill upon it, that the composition may excel all his former compositions, as the subject excels every other subject. The subject is Messiah.”

Did you stash away savings bonds years and years ago? Do you know what they’re worth now?

While savings bonds used to be a great way to put money aside for the future, with the different interest rates and dates of maturity, it’s all too easy to forget they’re still there waiting for you. Paper bonds haven’t been issued for years; they’ve now all gone electronic. But if you have paper bonds from long ago, there’s a good chance they’ve matured. Here are a few things to consider:

-- Paper bonds can add interest over and above the face value until they’re finally mature, which is usually 30 years. If your paper bonds are very old, they could be worth much more than face value.

-- Cashing in the oldest bonds first is a mistake. They might still be earning great interest.

-- If you cash in a bond on the wrong day, you might be giving up six months of interest.

-- Since you pay federal taxes on the interest, cashing in too many at once can have tax consequences you might not expect.

If you have paper savings bonds, your best bet is to check out savingsbonds.com. It

has loads of information to help you get the most cash out of your bonds, plus a complimentary bond calculator. If you set up an account, it will track your bonds and give you their current values.

Another great feature is that it tells you the next time interest will be added. The last thing you want to do is cash in one right before the next interest bump is posted. And it will warn you what interest you need to report on your taxes before you cash them in.

If you have paper bonds that you want to convert to electronic, you can do that too. Ask at your bank.

He needn’t have worried. Handel completed a draft score in three weeks in the summer of 1741. The legend says that while composing the famous “Hallelujah” chorus, he had a vision of “the great God himself.” There is no doubt that artist and subject matter came together in one of the most inspired episodes in the history of Western creativity.

novator, writing English-language oratorios and giving the chorus a bigger role. Typically, leading characters anchored a dramatic plot. The drama in “Messiah” was the Christian story itself, the birth, passion and resurrection of Christ told in scripture.

The work premiered in Dublin, at a performance so crowded that the ladies were urged to come without hoops in their skirts. A correspondent rendered a verdict that has stood up: “The Sublime, the Grand and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestic and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear.”

It took years for the “Messiah” truly to find its audience, though. Back in London, some wondered whether a theater was the appropriate venue for such elevated material. As one querulous writer put it, “An Oratorio either is an Act of Religion, or it is not; if it is, I ask if the Playhouse is a fit Temple to perform it in.” (Everyone is a critic.)

Of course, the greatness of the “Messiah” won out. Handel was buried at Westminster Abbey a national hero. A statue depicts him writing the “Messiah” aria, “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth.” By the 19th century, the work was a staple in Britain and the U.S. (associated with Christmas, even though Handel had it performed at Easter).

“It consistently manages to transcend the limits of religious and confessional dogma,” Jonathan Keates writes. “Its emotional range, the ways in which it embraces the multiplicity of existence, the directness of its engagement with our longing, our fears, our sorrows, our ecstasy and exaltation, give the whole achievement an incomparable universality.”

On the title page of his “Messiah” word book, Charles Jennens quoted Virgil, “majora canamus,” or let us sing of greater things. The immortality of Handel’s “Messiah” assures that we always will. ***

It’s always fascinating to me how people can look at the same situation and see things totally differently. For example, I look in the mirror and see Brad Pitt’s slightly older brother starting back at me. But my wife looks at me and sees a grizzled old Gabby Hayes look-alike!

But I digress. We’ve all heard of the proverbial “Is the glass half full or half empty?” question.

That’s kind of what I’m talking about. Some people see the positive side of things. And some see only negatives. And given the nature of this column, I’m thinking about how this relates to Social Securityrelated scenarios. Coincidentally, my email inbox this week contains several examples of this.

Q:

I just turned 70 and finally started my Social Security checks. My first check had a Medicare premium deducted from it. But I have been billed for Medicare ever y three months since I turned 65. And I’ve already paid the premium they took out of my check.

This is just another example of why the government can’t do anything right! Will I ever get this money back? Or am I just another victim of government ineptitude?

But then, the same week, I got this email.

Dear Paul: Mistakes in the Social Security earnings record are actually fairly common.

Your Social Security benefits are based on your highest 35 years of earnings history. So, if your earnings for any particular year are underreported, it will reduce your benefits.

These errors typically occur because your employer either reported your earnings incorrectly or reported your earnings using the wrong name or Social Security number. Or if you got married or divorced and changed your name but did not report the change to Social Security.

Check Your Statement

The best way to keep an eye on your benefits and avoid any possible mistakes is to carefully review your Social Security statement every year. To do this, go to SSA.gov/myaccount and then print your statement out on paper.

Enclosed is a photo of a clear pressed glass plate. The pattern is “Peacock,” and the plate is 5 inches in diameter. The design is in relief.

The rim has small scallops.

And the bull’s eye in the center is surrounded by S-scr olled designs.

A:

You have a nice example of the lacy glass pattern that was made by Boston & Sandwich Glass Company. It was founded in 1820 by Deming Jarves in Sandwich, Massachusetts. He employed Irish and English glass blowers.

The factory made blown glass, mold-blown glass and pressed glass. By 1930, he began producing pressed glass pieces using an innovative new method. As Boston & Sandwich Glass Company grew and prospered, so did the community.

His pressed glass pieces were decorated with an overall lacy pattern, thus the name lacy glass. The Peacock pattern is also known as “Peacock Eye” and “Peacock Feather.”

Jarves’ factory began experiencing economic and labor issues. In 1887, the union workers from the surrounding factories went on strike. Boston & Sandwich Glass Company went on strike in solidarity with them. By 1888, they were forced to close.

Villeroy & Boch made your pitcher. Johann Franz Bock founded his factory in Mettlach, Germany, in 1748. Nicholas Villeroy merged with Bock in 1836. They made porcelain and earthenware steins, dinnerware and decorative pieces.

Their first pottery was in an ancient Benedictine abbey. Over the years, they acquired several additional potteries. Villeroy & Boch is still in business today.

The mark you provided was used from 1874 to 1909. The figure wearing a winged hat and holding a staff entwined with snakes represents Mercury, the god of commerce.
