Your credit score ®is a three-digit number between 300 and 850, generated by a mathematical algorithm (a mostly secret

by Mary Hunt formula) based on information in your credit report compared with information on tens of millions of other people. The resulting number is said to be a highly accurate prediction of how likely you are to pay your bills.

* Everyone knows that a sophomore is someone in his or her second year of high school or college. Most people don’t realize, though, that the word is derived from the Greek words “sophos,” which means “wise,” and “moros,” which means “stupid.” * Have you ever tried to hum while holding your nose? It can’t be done.

If it sounds boring and unimportant, you couldn’t be more wrong. Credit scores are used extensively these days. If you rent an apartment, get braces, buy a cellphone service, apply for a job or call to get utilities connected, there’s a good chance your report and score will be pulled.

* The creator of the ubiquitous smiley face earned a grand total of $45 for his creative effort. * If you’re a pet owner, you probably know that the epidemic of obesity is not limited to humans; many pets are overweight, too.

You might be surprised to learn, though, that some pet owners choose to deal with the problem in a way that we usually associate only with people: liposuction. Yes, you can get cosmetic surgery for your pets.

If you have an existing credit card, the issuer is likely to look at your credit score to decide whether to decrease your credit limit or charge you a higher interest rate.

The higher the number, the better you look to lenders. People with the highest scores get the lowest interest rates. And, we hear, they’re getting the jobs.

Don’t close unused credit cards. Closing accounts might sound like a great short-term strategy to raise your score, but it’s not. This will close the gap between your outstanding debt (the amount of credit you are using) and the total amount available. Instead, use a clear strategy to close accounts, but only as it will not impact the gap between what you owe and the amount of credit available.

Don’t open new accounts. More credit might seem wise in order to increase your ratio, but it will be seen as a negative to your score.

New, or “young,” accounts are not useful in credit scoring because they dilute your average account age. Unless it’s a dire emergency, do not open new credit accounts.

Work on longevity. Make sure you maintain your oldest accounts. A great deal of weight is given to longevity, so the oldest account you have is the most valuable.

Stick with it. As with a lot of things in life, time is the best healer. Do the right thing by managing your finances responsibly and your credit score will take care of itself.

Get help! If you are having trouble making ends meet, contact your creditors or see a legitimate credit counselor. But beware. There are lots of shysters out there masquerading as negotiators, settlers and credit counselors.

• Mickey Mouse came about as the result of failed negotiations between Walt Disney and Universal Studios. In 1927, Walt had created a character name Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a big hit with the studio, who ordered a series of short films with the character. When it came time to negotiate a new contract, the studio informed Disney that they owned all of the rights to Oswald, and would allow Disney to stay on if he took a lower salary. Disney declined and struck out on his own with one loyal Universal animator who felt Disney had potential. Disney and the animator, Ub Iwerks, came up with the mouse character and dubbed him Mortimer.

Casey’s Corner (from page 10) wondering what I could have done differently to save him. He wasn’t neutered, and he would often initiate the playing with big dogs and then back down with yelping because he felt overwhelmed. But he had never gotten into a fight.

“For his daily walks, I would walk him around the park behind my home and let him walk off-leash for about half the walk, as he was really good about staying with me.

“I guess what I’m asking is: If and when I decide to get another dog, should I get him fixed?

Should I not take a small dog to a dog park? And was I wrong to let him walk without a leash in a public park? I’m just wondering whether I was too carefree with my little guy. I just wanted him to be a ‘dog’ and not completely on lockdown all the time. I’m a free spirit myself, and I’m missing him terribly.”

My heart goes out to this reader for her sad loss. And in the hopes of preventing similar stories, I offer the following to all readers:

-- Get your dog fixed as soon as he is old enough.

-- Always keep your dog on a leash when he’s not in your home or in your secured yard.

-- If you choose to use a dog park, do your homework. Find out whether there has been any aggressive behavior with any dogs there. Read the park rules, and try to find a park that caters to your dog’s age, size and temperament. The extra investigation is worth the effort.

RIFF RAFF

The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north to south. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts which were considered cheap. The steering oar on the rafts was called a “riff” and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class.

Older Seniors Trying to Help Their ‘Kids’ With Social Security

I am always amazed by the emails I get from older senior citizens trying to help their children deal with Social Security issues. I am talking about parents in their late 80s and beyond who are asking Social Security-related questions on behalf of their 60-something “kids.”

Gosh! I sometimes feel out of place offering advice to my 42-year-old son and 40-year-old daughter, both of whom have spouses and children of their own. I can’t even imagine doing the same when I’m in a nursing home and they are pushing Social Security age! Oh, well. I guess the urge to want to help your offspring lasts as long as you are alive.

So anyway, here are questions from senior citizen parents trying to help their young senior citizen children with Social Security:

Our son is about to turn 60. He is bound and determined to “maximize” his Social Security. He is going to wait until he is 70 before he starts his benefits. This concept is foreign to us. Both my husband and I took our benefits at age 62. We didn’t give this a second thought. But our son is agonizing over this. Can you help us advise our son?

I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of a porcelain-covered soup tureen. It measures 7 3/4 inches wide, 11 inches long and 4 1/4 inches high. It is decorated with green, yellow and blue floral designs against a white background and has gilded handles. Alongside the mark are the numbers “5069.”
