• Skunks are omnivorous, consuming both plants and animals, depending on what’s available.

They’ll eat insects, earthworms, grubs, rodents, lizards, frogs, snakes, birds, moles, but also berries, roots, leaves, grasses, and nuts. They are true scavengers, though, and are very willing to dine on whatever you’ve left in your trash can. Unfortunately, their strong forefeet and long nails, which assist them in digging for food, also wreak havoc in lawns, gardens, and golf courses.

• Typically, skunks don’t make their own homes, rather, they nest in burrows created by other animals. They also don’t mind hollow logs or abandoned buildings.

• Baby skunks, called kits, are born blind and their sight doesn’t improve by much as they grow. • The skunk’s smelly spray is a yellow oil liquid containing sulfuric acid that is produced by the glands under its tail. While the spray is a well-known method of defense, it’s not what the animal uses first. Initially, it will growl, spit, fluff its fur, shake its tail, and stamp on the ground in an effort to defend itself or its young, and will only use the spray as a last resort. The animal actually hesitates to use its spray, as it only has enough for five or six uses, and it takes 10 days to produce another supply.

• The skunk can blast an offender as far as ten feet away, with two glands that can shoot in different directions. The odor can be smelled by the human nose for more than a mile downwind.

• The prefix 'xeno,' taken from the Greek language,

refers to something that is strange, foreign, or different. It makes sense that a xenophobe is a person who is fearful of strangers or foreigners.

• In 1937, an American law student named Chester Carlson invented a copying process based on electrostatic energy. Because the process was called xerography, which translates from the Greek for “dry writing,” Carlson’s patent application used the word “Xerox” as the name of his new creation. Carlson licensed his invention to the Haloid Photographic Company, founded in 1906, a firm that manufactured photographic paper and equipment. In 1958, the company name was changed to Haloid Xerox, and by 1961, was known simply as the Xerox Corporation. By the time Carlson died in 1968, his accumulated wealth had allowed him to donate over $150 million to various charities.

• An engraving on wood or a print made from this engraving is known as a xylograph. The same root translates to the word xylophagous, which indicates a species that feeds on wood.

• Wooden bars that are struck by mallets make up the musical instrument known as the xylophone.

Each bar, often made of rosewood, resonates to a pitch of the musical scale. Several cultures claim to be the originator of the instrument, with one explanation that it came to Africa around 500 A.D., brought by Polynesians.

Other evidence indicates a type of xylophone from 2000 B.C. in ancient China. The word is a combination of Greek words, xylon, meaning “wood,” and phone, meaning “sound.”

Not long ago, a woman called me, very upset. She’d just dropped her dog off at a shelter -- the same shelter from which she had adopted him only a few weeks earlier.

When I asked why she returned him, she described what were obvious signs of severe aggressive tendencies.

When I asked why she had taken him home with her in the first place, she said, “For protection.”

OK. “For protection” makes sense. A lot of people bring a dog into the family for protection.

But protection and aggression are not the same things.

You don’t want your iron-jawed protector protecting your home and belongings from you and your family. And you don’t want to have to protect yourself and your family from little Cujo.

Crime is a reality, and we all want to feel safe. And we all have our ideas of how to secure that feeling of safety. Politicians and pop stars hire bodyguards for protection, but that’ll cost an arm and a leg. There’s the home alarm system -- just a notch above the car alarm in effectiveness. And some folks keep a gun near the nightstand -- intimidating, for sure, but not for everyone. Still others get a dog.

If you’re leaning toward the latter, there are some things you should understand before diving in.

First, protection dogs should be social, friendly and loving -- with everyone. What? What about growling? Snarling? Frothing at the mouth?

Anyone who argues that Cujo was just doing his job should be forever banned from the privilege of dog ownership. Protection dogs are not mean. They’re highly trained, physically conditioned and mentally alert. They’re also incredibly loyal and loving -- when properly trained, socialized and treated with love, praise and affection.

Which brings me to my next point: Protect your protector by keeping him inside the house at night, when those with bad intentions are most likely to lurk in nearby shadows.

Maximizing Strategy Sometimes Baffles SSA Clerks

I’ve received more than a few emails recently from folks who are trying to employ the one remaining Social Security maximizing strategy known as “file and restrict.” These emails demonstrate to me something I’ve long suspected: Employees of the Social Security Administration do a bang up job when it comes to doing routine matters, such as filing a simple Social Security retirement claim. But when things get a little complex, sadly more than a few SSA agents fall down on the job, and sometimes even mislead people. Here are some examples:

I just turned 66. I am still working and plan to work indefinitely. I want to suspend my own benefits until age 70 and file for spousal benefits on my ex-husband’s record.

He is 68 and getting his Social Security already. We were married for 30 years and have been divorced for 10 years. I never remarried.

I called Social Security’s 800 number. The agent told me that I cannot file and suspend.

She said that filing strategy was eliminated by Congress. I told her that according to your column, I still could do this. She said: “Who are you going to believe? Me? Or a newspaper columnist?” She told me my only option was to file for my own retirement benefits. I told her I didn’t want to do that. She said there was nothing else I could do and hung up. What should I do?

I know this may all sound like just silly jargon, but I’m pretty sure your use of the “file and suspend” language threw off the agent you were talking to. Still, she should have figured out what you wanted to do and been able to take care of you.

So call them back, use the right wording and hope you get a telephone rep who knows what he or she is doing!

I am about to turn 66. I want to file and restrict, taking benefits on my husband’s record and saving my own until age 70. I went to the Social Security office to do this. I brought along one of your past columns and showed it to the clerk who was taking care of us. I explained precisely what I wanted to do. He said that because my own benefit was more than half of my husband’s record, I could not take benefits on his account. I continued to press him on this. He spent about 15 minutes looking things up on his computer and eventually told me I simply could not do it. When I persisted even further, he finally went to talk to a super visor.

When he came back, he said I was right after all and proceeded to take my spousal claim.

He said he had worked for SSA for 10 years and that my situation was ver y unusual and that he had never encountered anything like it.

You are overthinking and worrying too much about this. And this is a good example of a simple situation that SSA does very well -- meaning the Social Security rep was advising you correctly. You should apply for your Social Security retirement benefits a couple months before you want them to begin. In other words, doing so now is just fine. As part of the application process, they are going to ask you when you want your benefits to start. As long as you answer “September” (the month you turn 66) you will be just fine. So you can go back to your Social Security office and file your claim. Or you can apply for your Social Security benefits online at www.socialsecurity.gov. * * *

I am really surprised that someone who has worked for SSA for 10 years had never heard of this practice. It has been all the rage among people pushing age 66 for years now. But if the emails to my column are any indication, a lot of their representatives get a failing grade when it comes to these more complex situations.

So let that be a lesson to other readers of this column. If you are trying to do something that you know is a legitimate transaction, and the clerk that was assigned to you seems puzzled or confused, ask to speak to a supervisor.

Smartphone or Tablet Users

If you or your husband uses a smartphone or tablet, you can easily track down lost or misplaced items like keys, a purse, wallet, remote control, smartphone, tablet or laptop with a Bluetooth tracker like TrackR (thetrackr. com, $25 or $30 per tag) or Tile (thetileapp.com, $25 per tag). It measures 8 inches by 8 inches.

This is a photo of a glass vase I own. I recently saw a similar vase in the glass collection at the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum. A mark on the vase reads, “Lino Tagliapietra -- Murano -- 1982 -- 28/100.” The vase is 12 inches tall and in mint condition.

My husband owned it before we were married, and he is now deceased.

I am interested to learn more about its histor y and value. What can you tell me?

A:

Lino Tagliapietra, glass artist and master glassmaker, was born in Murano, Italy, in 1934.

He achieved the title “maestro” (master glass blower) in his early 20s. He was inspired by modern artists Mark Rothko and Ellsw o r t h Kelly, as well as the glass he saw in Murano and Venice, Italy, and his life experiences.

Tagliapietra has Artist Lino Tagliapietra was born in Italy. been both student and teacher and gained worldwide recognition for his innovative works. His works are exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and many galleries. Renowned artist and glass blower Dale Chihuly holds Tagliapietra in high regard. While in Murano, Chihuly taught him glass blowing techniques, and Tagliapietra shared his skills with Chihuly. Tagliapietra creates his own colors, and his style reflects his culture, education and background.

The numbers on the bottom of the vase indicate that it was made in 1982 and is the 28th piece of a series of 100. Your vase was made in Murano.

Your plate was made by Haviland and Co. The factory was founded by American businessman David Haviland in Limoges, France, in 1842. In the beginning Haviland purchased blanks, had them decorated and then exported them back to the United States. By 1864 he saw the significance of owning and operating his own factory. He introduced pottery techniques that were used in the U.S. For a while the French decorators strongly resisted his new ways.

Your plate was made around 1879 and would probably be worth $25 to $45.
