• On July 13, 1978, Henry Ford II fired Lee Iacocca as Ford Motor Company’s president, and changed the course of automotive history.

Iacocca had been employed by Ford since 1946, and within 14 years he was a vicepresident and general manager. He was the designer of the Ford Mustang, an achievement that led to his being named company President.

Along the way, his radical management style led to frequent conflicts with Henry Ford II, whose intention was to turn the company over to his son Edsel, who was 28 at the time. Ford’s justification to Iacocca was, “Sometimes you just don’t like somebody.” It proved to be a good thing for Iacocca, who was hired as president of Chrysler Corp. the following year.

Chrysler at the time was nearly bankrupt, but under Iacocca’s leadership it posted record profits of $2.4 billion five years later. He retired from Chrysler in 1992.

DRYER-SHEET RESCUE. Don’t throw away all your used laundry softener sheets. When your casserole dish or pot becomes impossible to clean, toss one or two of the used sheets into the pan, fill it with hot water and presto! You can wipe the pan clean in just 20 minutes. No scrubbing needed. Store the sheets in an empty tissue box.

BABY SHAMPOO. Instead of using expensive cold-water detergents for delicates, use baby shampoo. You will get the same results for a considerably less cost.

BRILLIANT WHITE. If you want to keep your white laundry stain-free and brilliantly white without using chlorine bleach, here’s the secret: Fill the washing machine with the hottest water possible. Add 1 cup Cascade Automatic Dishwasher Detergent and 1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (or soda ash from a pool supply store). Throw in washable whites and let the machine agitate for a few minutes. Then, turn the machine off, and let the items soak for at least three hours. Overnight is fine. After, finish the wash cycle and dry the items as usual.

I saw an ad for a new HBO show called “Westworld,” and it looks really awesome. Can you tell me anything about it?

The Western sci-fi thriller, which premieres this fall, is based on the 1973 movie of the same name by Michael Crichton. HBO describes the 10-episode series as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” It stars Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood and Ben Barnes, and features a whole slew of supporting characters, including “The Hunger Games” alumnus Bruno Gunn.

I spoke with Bruno recently, and he’s thrilled to be a part of this “groundbreaking series.”

Bruno revealed: “It was my first period piece -- it’s set back in time of the Wild West -- it was just mind-blowing.

What really impressed me the most was the authenticity of it all.”

He also told me that the set Bruno Gunn was a joy to work on: “Every single person I came in contact with was fantastic. I’m working with James Marsden; he and I have a scene together, and he was terrific.

We were bouncing ideas off each other and trying this and that to see what happens. That’s what any actor really wants to do; get in there and just play around.”

Bruno also has a feature film coming up called “Officer Downe,” which has been getting rave reviews as being a groundbreaking entry into the graphic-novel film genre. He told me: “No one has seen anything like this. This is an R-rated movie, much in the vein of ‘Deadpool,’ and it doesn’t shy away from its origins. It is a punch in the face that the film world has been waiting for.” *** You mentioned a few weeks ago that the producers of “Nashville” were in talks to take the series to another network.

This Independence Day, do your dog a favor and don’t bring him to the party. Instead, follow these guidelines to keep your dog safe and comfortable on what can be a real fright night for our canine companions:

-- Take your dog outside to relieve himself before you leave the house.

-- Treat your dog to an extra-long walk or a strenuous game of fetch to burn off energy and wear him out.

-- While you’re out, leave your dog in a secure room in the house or, even better, in his crate.

-- Close all windows, blinds and drapes to help deflect the sound and the flashes of light.

-- Leave the lights on in his area to further dilute the flashes of light from fireworks or sparklers.

-- Surround him with his favorite chew toys and a soft blanket.

-- Keep your departure that night simple, without a lot of fanfare that could excite him or make him anxious.

-- Play music or keep the television on at a normal volume -- and tuned to a channel that will not be airing a live fireworks display.

-- If your dog must stay outside for some reason, make the extra effort to ensure all fences and gates are secure.

-- Make sure his tags are attached to his collar and contain current contact information.

By heeding these precautions and planning ahead, you can avoid the close call this family experienced last year:

spousal offset. So people who get non-Social Security retirement pensions -- like Texas teachers -- actually get a break because of the GPO law.

Anyway, you would have to ask the people who run the Texas Teacher’s Retirement System if you can drop their retirement pension. But I think you would be foolish to do so. Let me explain by giving you some examples. (And to keep my math simple, I am going to assume you are 66 or older in these examples.)

If you dropped your TRS pension, you would be eligible for half of your husband’s Social Security, or $1,200 per month.

If you kept your TRS pension, an amount equal to two-thirds of that pension, or about $267, must be deducted from your Social Security spousal benefits. So you would get $933 per month. But of course, you would also get your $400 teacher’s pension, for total monthly benefits of $1,333. So why would you want to drop your TRS pension?

And the same logic holds true after your husband dies. Without your TRS pension, you would be due $2,400 in widow’s benefits.

With your TRS pension, you would be due $2,133 in Social Security widow’s benefits and $400 in teacher’s retirement benefits, for a total of $2,533.

Why Blood-Pressure Readings Can Vary

DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to comment on your column regarding bloodpressure differences between the arms.

A difference of greater than 10 mmHg between the two arms in systolic pressure is considered abnormal. We see patients not uncommonly in consultation for this reason alone, perhaps as many as one a month. Almost always, the reason for the difference is blockage of the subclavian artery. The wrist pulse on the side with lower blood pressure may be normal, diminished or absent in those patients.

From 30 years of observation, I have noticed that patients with BP differences between the arms are nearly always female smokers (or former smokers), and the left subclavian is much more likely to be affected (have a lower blood pressure) than the right.

Why this sex difference should be and why the left side should predominate is not understood and, to my knowledge, has not been described in print. Additionally, the presentation is usually in a non-obese woman in her 40s or 50s who is still smoking.

The significance of the finding is that it is a red flag waving for tobacco cessation and is a marker that that person’s arteries have already been significantly altered by the habit. Fortunately, the incidence of arm symptoms associated with the lower BP on that side is quite low -- perhaps 1 in 10 have any symptoms. It is important, of course, for such patients to be aware of the difference between the arms only to remember which arm (the higher arm systolic number) has the correct measurement (most often, but not always, the right). -- Jerry Svoboda, MD, FACS ANSWER: I thank Dr. Svoboda for his expertise and will add difference in arm blood pressures to my (already very long list) of reasons to quit smoking.

ANSWER: The very best machines are accurate at measuring blood pressure; however, a trained clinician remains the standard for blood pressure measurement. Fortunately, good, but not necessarily outstanding, hearing is required for accurate blood pressure measurement. Proper placement and inflation of the cuff, the correct slow deflation rate and, importantly, measuring both arms are as significant as good hearing. I was taught to take an average of three measurements.

Excellent hearing helps the clinician pick up on subtle heart murmurs and other noises, normal and abnormal, that the heart makes. If you decide to become a physician, consider cardiology. We physicians should take great care to protect our ears; sadly, some of us listened to music that was too loud at some points in our lives. ***

Faulty TBI Screenings

It’s believed that 24,000 veterans didn’t get the traumatic brain injury screenings they should have received, all because of misunderstood instructions. Those screenings, dating back as far as 2007, were part of the exams given in connection with disability claims.

Only four specific medical specialties are allowed to give TBI screenings -- psychiatrist, physiatrist, neurosurgeon or neurologist -- but it seems that others misread the “guidance documents” that specified which medical specialties were allowed to do those screenings.

Now those 24,000 veterans will be sent a letter to inform them of the glitch. They’ll also be invited to have a proper screening within one year.

At least those incidents happened within the Department of Veterans Affairs. The other issue is supposed “experts” reviewing cases and making determinations for the VA. It only takes a little digging to unearth the wrongs that can occur when an alleged expert is brought in from the outside.

A news station in Minnesota did its own investigation and came up with 300 veterans who hadn’t been examined by qualified medical personnel. One veteran was examined for knee, ankle and back problems and had the claim turned down ... by an OB/GYN “expert.” In another case, a doctor cut and pasted information from Wikipedia and put it in a veteran’s file ... after carefully deleting one word so the phrase matched what he wanted it to say.

Some veterans are having their claims finalized by those who give medical opinions only (reading the files), rather than doing actual physical exams. Other veterans are hiring their own independent medical examiners to review their cases.

This set was my grandmother’s.

She passed it down to my mother. I inherited it when my mother died in 1996 at the age of 92. I am 83, but I can remember seeing the set at my grandmother’s house as a child. She used it on special occasions. It is in perfect condition, but there are no markings as far as I can tell.

I plan to pass the set to my daughter, so I would love to know something about it.

You have a mixing bowl made by Watt Pottery Company. It was founded in Crooksville, Ohio, in 1922. Your bowl is part of the “Apple” series, which was introduced in 1952 and produced until 1962. There were variations of the apple pattern: apples with one leaf, two leaves or three leaves, two apples, an open apple, etc. Your bowl has the double-leaf pattern. Watt made a plethora of dishes, including stacked mixing bowls, salt and pepper shakers, bowls, pitchers, casseroles, bakers, bean pots, canisters and cookie jars. The “7” on the mark designated the diameter of the bowl.

Your bowl may have originally been part of the stacked/nesting mixing bowl set.

You have an art deco-style decanter with matching glasses and silver tray. The art deco movement began in France in the 1920s and quickly swept through Europe and the United States.

The style, characterized by sleek, bold, streamlined geometric shapes, was a backlash to the more fussy Victorian designs and neoclassical revival.

Art deco embraced both architecture and decorative arts. It reflected the modern technology of the times. The style faded by the 1940s. Many sets similar to yours were made in Czechoslovakia. They probably originally included a paper label with the manufacturer’s name and origin. Also, the glasses were used as shot glasses.

Your set was made in the late 1930s or early 1940s. It would probably be worth anywhere between $75 and $125. ***

Death, as they say, is a part of life. Short weeks after the death of the great Ali, we are again reminded of this fact. It’s a morose subject to be sure, but some people just make huge impacts and leave legacies that appear impossible to match. One such athlete was Gordie Howe.

It strains the limits of incredulity that Howe isn’t in the world right now, having passed at 88 years of age. He wasn’t the Ali of hockey -he was the Gordie Howe of hockey. He was “Mr. Hockey.”

Can you imagine? If you were a “war baby” born in 1946, the best player in hockey was playing until you were 34. He played from the Truman administration straight through to Reagan (and that’s not counting his Minnie Minosa moment in the ‘90s when he played a shift for the Detroit Vipers).

Perhaps Howe’s greatest ability was his talent for letting the game come to him. He was so efficient in his movement that he kept moving longer than any other player in NHL history.

Through sheer muscle memory, Howe had an uncanny knack at being in position for the great play. Also, he was ambidextrous and could beat you silly from the left and the right.

People like to say that he wasn’t the best at any one thing ... he was “just” great at everything. He could skate, but he wasn’t the fastest.

He didn’t have the hardest slapshot, but he had the most goals. He wasn’t the best fighter, but nobody dared to say that to his face. It didn’t matter because he was the complete hockey player, a champion and an MVP many times over.

Also, he was a great guy. While he didn’t earn the type of wage that today’s hockey stars command, he was always there for the charity event. He may not have donated millions in cash, but he made others millions just by stroking his signature across a stick, and he was always willing to do it. Stories abound of him coming to the aid of people in tough situations when they didn’t even ask. Like on the ice, he just had a uncanny way of being there. Maybe that’s why they named an international bridge for the guy.

A famous novelist once said that no matter what a writer says, whatever they just wrote is the very best they can do at that moment. Howe never had a moment of doubt.

“You find that you have peace of mind and can enjoy yourself, get more sleep and rest when you know that it was a 100 percent effort that you gave -- win or lose,” Howe used to say.

Howe never cheated himself, his teams, his family or the fans for even one minute, and that is why he will always be remembered.
