It's estimated that crosswords are a part of daily life for some 50 million people, with its popularity always staying at the top of the favorites list. With so many of us obsessed with these challenging puzzles, Tidbits decided to see what interesting facts we might dig up about them. Read on to see how it all began and what keeps such great numbers of us so addicted to our crosswords every day.

• In 1913 Arthur Wynne was editor of the puzzle page in the Sunday magazine section of the New York World. Having grown tired of word squares, hidden words and anagram puzzles, he was looking for something new and more challenging to give to his readers. As he played around with the standard word square, he decided to try something different.

He called his diamond-shaped result a “wordcross.” The reader response was so positive that it immediately became a regular feature.

• A few weeks after the first “Word-Cross” appeared, the name of the puzzle was changed to “CrossWord” due to a typesetting error by a linotype operator. The new name stuck, and Wynne's puzzles have been known as “crosswords” ever since.

• For the next ten years, the New York World was the only paper that published crosswords. Early on their newspaper rival, the New York Times, thought crosswords were merely a passing fad and predicted their swift demise. They couldn't have been more mistaken.

Crosswords (from page one) • In 1924, two young men decided to form a partnership and start a publishing company, but the problem was they had nothing to publish.

Then one of the men went to dinner at his aunt’s house. His aunt said she was looking for a Christmas present for her daughter and mentioned that the girl was addicted to the crossword puzzles published in the New York World. She asked her nephew if he knew of any place where she could buy a book of crosswords as a gift. He began calling around the next day and found that no such book existed. He suggested to his business partner that this might be the opportunity they were looking for.

• When the two men told their advisors they intended to publish crossword books, they were told the subject was too narrow and would fail.

Instead, they were advised to publish the book under a pseudonym so that if it didn't succeed, their real name wouldn't be blemished by a failure. So they published 3,600 copies of the book under the name of Plaza Publishing Co. • Advance sales were slow, and booksellers felt the book was a dead item. But on the day the book officially came out, the two publishers also ran a promotional ad next to the daily crossword in the paper. The response was tremendous. Book stores were overwhelmed with requests—40,000 copies sold in the first few weeks. One distributor ordered 55,000 copies, then called back and ordered a quarter

How to Win Big with a Warehouse Club Membership

They’re big, they’re filled with temptation and millions of people shell out an average of 50 bucks a year to be card-carrying members of one of America’s three big warehouse clubs: Costco, ® Sam’s Club or BJ’s.

While by the Marywhole Hunt idea is to save money by shopping at a warehouse club, membership alone does not guarantee that will be the result.

In fact, just the opposite is as likely to happen, where members end up spending far more than they imaged they would because they just don’t how to make a club work for them.

As a long-time warehouse club member, it’s taken years for me to really figure out how to win the warehouse club game. Here are some tricks of the trade I’ve learned.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO. It is really dangerous to your wallet to cruise into the club without a clear idea what you are going to buy.

The way to know before you go is to create a written shopping list. That way, if you need something, you’ll know it before you arrive. If you discover things you need that are not on your list, make a second list of things you will buy on your next trip. Make sure to check the monthly ads for your specific club to see opportunities for instant savings or discounts.

INVEST IN A FOODSAVER. I am convinced that a FoodSaver with a pulse vacuum feature, or something similar, is really the only way to make a warehouse club work long-term.

It’s going to require an investment of about $175, but considering the price of food these days -provided you use this appliance religiously -- you will recoup the cost quickly. Properly vacuumsealed food lasts up to five times as long -- fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, chips, nuts, snacks and more included. I can vouch for that. My FoodSaver extends the time between shopping trips. It keeps me out of Costco, which I must confess is a very good thing.

I recently invested in the FoodSaver 4980 with PulseVac (not all FoodSaver models have the pulse vac feature), which allows for manual starting and stopping of the vacuum to help prevent crushing delicate foods, such as baked goods and potato chips. This is a new feature and I love it. This model has other cool features as well, all outlined in the owner manual.

A warehouse club membership is not all fun and games. It’s a tool that, when paired with personal discipline and a bit of hard work, can result is tremendous savings in both time and money. ***

The gorgeous and talented actress who plays Capt. Kate Beckett on the beloved ABC police procedural is indeed leaving at the end of this -- the show’s eighth -- season. Also exiting Tamala Jones, who plays the smart and sassy medical examiner Lanie Parish. Not only are the fates of Katie and Lanie up in the air, but so is the fate of the show.

“Castle” was not among the list of ABC renewals announced back in March. Of course, rumors are flying, including scenarios Stana Katic such as “Castle” having a shortened, 13-episode season nine, or complete cancelation, or maybe it’ll be business as usual, sans our favorite police captain. What this would mean for Richcan ard and Kate’s marriage is anyone’s guess.

I’m currently working with an aggressive dog.

His owner is a single woman who lives on a ranch. No children are at risk. The woman is responsible, stable and willing to work with the dog in a humane way for the best possible results and the best possible relationship. At the end of our time together, that’s what she’ll get.

The following letter from a reader describes a situation I’m not willing to work with:

“We have three kids -- 12, 11 and 11. We’ve had Great Danes before and have a 4-year-old female now, along with our new puppy, Romeo, who is 4 months old and weighs 80 pounds. He’s rough on our adult Dane, he’s been a bit rough on our cats, and we’ve all felt a tooth on our skin.

“Romeo is probably going to weigh 200 pounds and definitely has an alpha ‘attitude.’ He shows a strong sense of dominance: He growls at being told no, barks back at me, growls when being pinned to the floor and will stare into anyone’s eyes.

When taken by the collar, he growls at the kids and sometimes bites at them to get their hands off. It is difficult to discern the difference between ‘puppy mouthiness’ and ‘aggression.’

“Most of his growling starts when being punished. He’s been smacked (not hard) with my hand, as I was trained to do in years past. I’ve done a lot of finger pointing and pinning, but he’d keep growling, so I’d up the ante until he stopped. Everyone kept telling me I should never let him get away with the growling.

“The good things are: I can give him all those tests on your website; I can give him a bone and take it out of his mouth or his dish; I can have him lie on his back while I examine his feet and mouth; and he’ll relax for a half-hour during puppy class.

“He’s a sweet lovey-dovey Great Dane who will be neutered at 6 months. I’m concerned about him, and I’m concerned I might be doing something wrong.”

He should be concerned about his kids.

Acetaminophen, a commonly used over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer, has been shown in research trials to reduce people's ability to spot errors. That can be a serious problem, depending on what the user is doing while taking the drug.

In double-blind clinical trials, those taking acetaminophen didn’t notice any difference in their ability to see errors, but the test results told a different story: They showed both slower reactions and an increase in mistakes. (The participants’ task was to hit one of two buttons when certain letters appeared on a screen.)

Acetaminophen is an active ingredient in hundreds of over-the-counter and prescription medicines. If you take a pain reliever, be sure to read the package label to see if it contains acetaminophen, especially if you have liver problems.

In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about acetaminophen causing serious skin diseases, including rash and blisters. In 2015, the FDA amended the required warning on packages to expand on the possibility of liver damage.

I filed for my Social Security benefits last year when I was 62. My wife, who never worked outside the home, and who is the same age as me, signed up for spousal benefits on my account at the same time. Several months ago, I found a job that pays me more than Social Security allows. I reported this to the Social Security people. They are now withholding both of our checks. Why are my wife’s checks being held back? I’m the one working, not her! And this is especially irritating because my wife has a friend who is divorced and she is getting her Social Security benefits even though her husband is working.
