Did you know that April is International Guitar Month? This week Tidbits gives you a few facts you probably never knew about the best-selling musical instrument of all time, one that is played by more than 50 million people worldwide.

• The guitar is a chordophone, an instrument that makes its sound via vibrating strings tightly stretched between two points. The word “acoustic” refers to a guitar that is not electronically amplified. An acoustic guitar produces its sounds by transmitting the strings’ sound waves to the air, and their vibrations resonating though the guitar’s body and out the sound hole. A soundboard, a thin sheet of wood, is placed under the strings to increase the resonance. Electric guitars have electromagnetic pickup heads that convert the strings’ vibrations into electrical signals, which are electronically fed into an amplifier.

HISTORY OF THE GUITAR

• The guitar’s origins date back about 4,000 years.

The oldest known image of an instrument with a guitar’s feature is 3,300 years old, a stone carving of a Hittite minstrel in Turkey. An archaeological museum in Cairo, Egypt, is home to a 3,500-yearold guitar that belonged to an Egyptian singer named Har-Mose. • The word “guitar” is derived from the Spanish

GUITAR NOMENCLATURE

• The neck of the guitar is comprised of the

headstock (at the end of the neck), the fretboard (the fingerboard), the frets, which are metal strips embedded on the fretboard, the nut (a small strip of hard material at the junction of the headstock and neck with a row of small notches, one for each string), the tuning pegs, and the truss rod, a sturdy metal reinforcing rod that runs inside length of the neck.

that divide the scale into half-step intervals.

Get a 12-inch skillet and pour enough water to come 1 inch up the side. Add 1 teaspoon of kosher salt and 3 teaspoons of white vinegar, then bring it to a simmer over medium heat. Meanwhile, crack four cold, large eggs into individual custard cups or very small bowls.

Carefully pour the eggs into the boiling water.

Turn off the heat, cover the pan and set your timer for 5 minutes. Don’t peek, touch, move or cheat in any way.

After exactly five minutes, remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and serve immediately. Yum.

Easy Pita Pizzas With Vegetables

Top whole-wheat pitas with ricotta cheese, garbanzo beans and sauteed vegetables for a fast dinner the whole family will love.

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 medium red onion, sliced

2 garlic cloves, crushed with press

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

8 ounces broccoli florets, cut into 1 1/2inch pieces

1/4 cup water Salt

1 can (15 to 19 ounces) garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained

1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese

4 (6-inch) whole-wheat pitas, each split horizontally in half

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 medium plum tomatoes (12 ounces), cut into 1/2-inch chunks

1. Heat oven to 450 F. In nonstick 12-inch skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat until hot.

Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, 7 to 10 minutes. Add garlic and crushed red pepper and cook, stirring, 30 seconds. Add

broccoli, water and 1/4 teaspoon salt; heat to boiling. Reduce heat to medium and cook, covered, until broccoli is tender-crisp, about 5 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, in small bowl, with potato masher or fork, mash beans with ricotta and 1/4 teaspoon salt until almost smooth.

3. Arrange pita halves on 2 large cookie sheets. Bake until lightly toasted, about 3 minutes. Spread toasted pitas with bean mixture.

Top with broccoli mixture and sprinkle with Parmesan. Bake until heated though, 7 to 10 minutes longer.

4. To serve, sprinkle pitas with tomatoes.

Makes 4 main-dish servings.

ON THE SIDE: For each person, toss 2 cups mixed greens with 1/2 teaspoon olive oil plus salt, pepper and lemon juice or vinegar to taste.

“I’ve given her tongue lashings that would wake the dead and ostracized her to the point of feeling guilty like an abusive jailer.”

“I’ve bitten her on the neck and stared her straight in the eyes.”

“I use a pronged training collar, which makes a world of difference.”

“When she goes after my hand, I push it farther into her mouth.”

“What can I do? I have scolded her, slapped her, isolated her, but nothing seems to work.”

Answer: They are all confessions of dog abusers.

These were nonchalant comments dropped by ignorant people in the course of explaining to me the problem with their dog. What they don’t realize is that the dog is not the problem.

Their dog does not obey. His behavior is embarrassing. They are frustrated. Exhausted. At their wits’ end. And on and on. But none of the dogs subjected to the abuse laid out above were ever trained. In all fairness, how high should the expectations be?

One woman said, “He won’t come to me.”

I asked her whether he had been trained to “come.”

She said, “Well, I bought him. Shouldn’t he come to me?”

A signature on a check means nothing to a dog -- and neither do the words “come” and “no” unless you teach him.

None of the “techniques” quoted above constitute teaching or training. Most of them were bad ideas pulled from the Internet in a misguided attempt to fix a serious problem. If you were diagnosed with cancer, would you turn to the Internet to nail down a treatment plan? Would you heed the advice found on Orville’s Free Oncology blog? Of course not. You’d turn to a doctor, a professional, a specialist.

One of the perks of retirement for many seniors is not having to pay taxes any longer ... at least most of the time. And when we discover that we do have to cough up tax money after all, it’s a tough situation.

According to a Social Security assistant deputy commissioner in a recent newsletter, one-third of seniors receiving benefits have to pay taxes because of disability and survivor benefits, as well as income that is in addition to Social Security.

Still More Confusion About the April 30 Social Security Deadline

I think I could write a column every day from now until the end of this month with a headline that screams: DON’T PANIC ABOUT THE ALLEGED APRIL 30 SOCIAL SECURITY DEADLINE! -- and people would still be panicking.

At least, that’s what my emails are telling me. It seems as though half of the senior citizens in this country think they have to do something in the next several weeks with their Social Security or they risk losing untold thousands of dollars in benefits.

Apparently, I can’t repeat this message often enough: The April 30 filing deadline applies to only a very small handful of people who are not yet getting Social Security benefits and who are already 66 or will be turning 66 soon and who want to employ the file and suspend strategy discussed endlessly in this column. I’ve spent the last two columns explaining who those folks are.

And I will spend the rest of this column answering emails to help explain who those folks are not. In other words, these emails come from people who are examples of the vast majority of Social Security beneficiaries, or soon-to-be beneficiaries, to whom the April 30 deadline is meaningless.

Dear Savvy Senior: I will turn 62 in a few months and am trying to decide when to start taking my Social Security retirement benefits. Almost everything I read on this topic tells me it’s better to wait until my full retirement age or beyond. Is there ever a good reason to start early?

Dear Ready: You’re right! Most financial planners agree that waiting to take your Social Security retirement benefits is a smart financial move. Why? Because each month you defer, from your 62nd birthday to your 70th, your monthly benefits grow. That adds up to around 6 to 8 percent higher payments for every year you delay.

Yet despite the financial incentive to wait, most people (58 percent of men and 64 percent of women) claim their benefits before full retirement age, which is currently 66 for those born between 1943 and 1954.

But speeding up the clock isn’t always a bad idea. Here are some scenarios where it may make sense for you to collect early.

You need the money: If you’re retired and don’t have enough savings or a pension to cover your living expenses, you’ll probably have to start early. But, if you decide to work, be aware of the earnings test.

If you claim Social Security benefits before full retirement age (and you don’t reach 66 this year), you’ll forfeit $1 for every $2 you earn over the earnings limit of $15,720 in 2016. It usually doesn’t make sense to take benefits early if you’re working, unless your income is below the earnings limit.

This strategy is best suited when a lowerearning wife is three to six years younger than her husband and her earnings are 30 to 40 percent of his. She should claim at 62 and he should claim at full retirement age, or better yet wait to age 69 or 70. Because the husband is likely to die earlier, the wife’s reduced benefit will be temporary and she will then qualify for the higher survivor benefit.

We have a pair the Hitchcock chairs, and I have enclosed a photo of one of them. They are old, in great condition and have the original finish. There are stencils on the back. Marked under the seats are the words “L. Hitchcock -Hitchcocksville, Conn. -- Warranted -- R.” The N’s are all written backwards and the R is inside a circle.

We would appreciate information about the age and approximate value of our chairs.

Lambert Hitchcock founded his hand stenciled furniture factory in 1818 in Hitchcocksville, Conn. His chairs were so affordable and popular that they became mass-produced. Hitchcock was an amazing innovator, but he lacked business skills. The company went into receivership in 1832.

A r o u n d 1946, John Kenney came across the abandoned factory while fishing in the nearby river. He bought the property and began producing chairs in the same location until 2006. In 2010, Rick Swenson and Gary Hath purchased the Hitchcock name and Lambert Hitchcock made designs. Their facfurniture that was affordable tory is in Riverton and popular. (originally known as Hitchcocksville), and their plan is to produce furniture in keeping with the vision of Lambert Hitchcock.

Framed on either side by bright orange construction cones, it is kept illuminated 24/7 by flashing lights from parked state troopers’ patrol cars. It doesn’t matter where you are on the radio dial because every station is playing the same tune: They’re talking about the Villanova Wildcats.

A few weeks earlier, one of the drivers had an epiphany: “You guys ... Villanova is, like, the only good team in Philadelphia right now.” Soon after, it seemed like the take-out customers went from wearing Penn State garb to Wildcat tees. Bumper stickers with the blue emblazoned “V” seemed to multiply.

Although Temple, St. Joe’s and Drexel made their tournament runs, the town is mired in a rather bleak rut of late. The Philadelphia Experiment that was the Chip Kelly regime has left the Eagles in complete disarray. The Flyers can’t win a shootout and are in danger of being eliminated from the playoffs. The Phillies are expected to finish below .500, and the 76ers are a train wreck.

Through it all, Villanova stood apart.

Counted out virtually all season until they finally punched through and held the No. 1 ranking for a time, ‘Nova reminded everyone of why they love the multi-tiered sports scene of the town.

Philadelphia basketball is an institution, and no institution has garnered more love over the years than Villanova. In 1985, Villanova played the “perfect game” in beating Georgetown for the title; this year Villanova had the secondbest shooting performance in Final Four history, second only to that ‘85 squad, and their average margin of victory in the tournament was surpassed only by the 1996 Kentucky team.

Still, people weren’t sure that Jay Wright, in his 15th season as head coach, had what it would take toANSWERS beat North Carolina.
