Tidbits flips back through the calendar and takes a look at some of the noteworthy events that occurred this week in history. From science and medicine to politics and music, let's jog your memory and see how many of these events have happened during your lifetime.

• On November 29, 1947, the United Nations met to vote on the crucial issue of whether to partition the British-controlled territory of Palestine into two states, one for Jews and one for Arabs. The area had been under British control since 1917.

Needing a two-thirds majority for passage, the U.N. General Assembly passed the historic resolution by 72%, with all Arab nations voting unanimously against recognizing Israel as an independent state. The day after the vote, violence erupted into what became the 1947-48 Civil War between Jews and Arabs, after which the Jewish state of Israel was officially declared.

• The world lost a famous daredevil on November 30, 2007, with the passing of motorcyclist Evel Knievel. The Butte, Montana native suffered more than 430 broken bones over the course of his career. His record of jumping on his cycle over 14 Greyhound buses was on the books for 24 years, his jump over 19 cars was a record for 27 years, and his lengthy jump over stacked cars was unbeaten for 35 years.

• At the young age of 25, Brannock obtained a patent for his invention and established the Brannock Device Company. He began selling the apparatus to other shoe retailers by himself, but soon hired a team of salesmen to introduce the product to shoe stores throughout the country. It was an immediate success, and by 1929 the device was being sold internationally.

• In 1933, a U.S. Navy captain was looking into why so many sailors had problems with their feet, and asked a shoe salesman for his advice.

The salesman measured the sailors’ feet with a Brannock device, and informed the captain that the problem was simply ill-fitting shoes.

That captain wrote an article about this simple solution in the July, 1933 issue of United States Naval Institute Proceedings. Brannock seized the opportunity to expand his business by forwarding the article, first to other naval ships, then on to other branches of the military. By World War II, his device was in regular use by most of the armed forces.

Following the death of his father in 1962, Brannock added to his own manufacturing company work load by becoming CEO of ParkBrannock Shoes. He continued to come to the office of Brannock Devices on a daily basis well into his 80s. When his health began to fail, he thought about selling the business, but many prospective buyers wanted to change the device to a plastic material. To Brannock, this was a non-negotiable point, and he insisted that the devices be manufactured from steel.

• Brannock died in 1993 at age 89. The company was purchased from his estate by Sal Leonardi, who has maintained the business just as Brannock would have wanted it. ‪

Week In History (from page one) • On November 30, 1954, as Mrs. Hulett Hodges lay sleeping on the couch in her Sylacauga, Alabama home, a meteorite suddenly ripped through the roof, smashed through a radio, bounced off the wall and struck her in the ribs on her left side. The strange incident was the first such occurance ever recorded. Measuring about eight inches in diameter and weighing about nine pounds, the sulfide space rock did not permanently injure the unfortunate woman, but it did leave a three-foot hole in her roof.

• Rosa Parks made history when she stepped onto a Montgomery, Alabama bus on December 1, 1955. Headed for home from her job at a local department store, Rosa took a seat in the 11th row of the bus, the first row of the section reserved for blacks. As the bus filled up, three whites were left standing. The driver demanded that four black people give up their seats. Three black men moved, but Rosa refused to budge.

Police were called and, although she had not technically broken any law, she was arrested for violating city code and for disorderly conduct.

• The New York Municipal Airport opened on the waterfront of Flushing Bay in Queens on December 2, 1939. The site had originally been an amusement park owned by the Steinway Pianos family, and later became a private airfield in 1929. New York City shelled out $23 million to change the field into a modern commercial airport. In 1953, the name was changed to LaGuardia Airport, honoring Fiorello LaGuardia, the city's mayor from 1934 to 1945. It was LaGuardia who had originated and championed the idea of developing and expanding a modern airport facility on that site.

The problem here is the lack of training and a lack of true communication between you and your dog. A well-trained dog will always sit and stay on command. And if she is sitting and staying, it is impossible for her to be jumping and scaring your guests or anyone else who comes to your door, and possibly injuring them. Your options are to hire a trainer who can solve the problems or to work with your dog yourself.

Solving the jumping problem is not difficult, but it will require some time and effort. Do not resort to abusive techniques like kneeing the dog in the chest or stepping on her back toes. This is cruel treatment and harms the relationship between you and your best friend.

There are a lot of ways to correct a dog.

One of the most effective is the corrective jerk using a training collar and leash. But you must know how to execute the correction properly. See “When Good Dogs Do Bad Things,” Siegal-Margolis, published by Little Brown and available at unclematty.

Mediterranean Diet Makes Brain Younger

The Mediterranean diet has been in the news for years, but some of us aren’t sure if it offers any real benefits. Now we have a piece of the puzzle. In a recent study supported by the National Institutes of Health, participants experienced less brain atrophy after adhering to that type of diet, resulting in loss of fewer brain cells and maintaining cognition.

The Mediterranean-type diet (called MeDi in researcher parlance), consists of low intake of dairy, poultry, meat and alcohol, and higher intake of fruit, fish, cereal, vegetables and fats that are monounsaturated (such as olive oil).

A few specifics: Eating less meat resulted in larger total brain volume. Eating more fish was associated with greater cortical thickness.

Based on these, researchers concluded that even these two diet adjustments had a positive benefit as part of the Mediterranean diet.

The difference in two groups (those who adhered to a Mediterranean diet versus those who didn’t) was the same as aging five years.

The average brain volume was 13 percent larger, which is significant.

This isn’t the first time the benefits to the brain have been studied. In 2010, a similar study concluded that the Mediterranean diet

Yes, it is true that your wife’s future widow’s benefit would include the extra bonus percentage you get for delaying your retirement until 70. But even though I am not a financial planner, and I certainly am not a marriage counselor, I really think you should think twice about your Social Security plans.

I personally think you should concentrate more on your current financial situation and not so much on what might be the case 25 years down the road. I’d recommend you take your Social Security benefits now and enjoy the fruits of your labors while you still can. And I’ve got to be honest with you. It sounds like your wife will still be relatively young when you are gone. Do you really think she will remain unmarried for the rest of her life? And if she does remarry (before she is 60), she won’t be due a nickel of your Social Security. I’m just trying to give you some food for thought.

I am a single man who just retired.

I am turning 62 next June. I was married once, and my wife died many years ago. I’ve decided I’m going to take reduced benefits at age 62.

When should I apply for my Social Security?

A:

Normally, I would tell you to file for benefits about two or three months before your birthday. But you may have another option. Even though your wife died many years ago, if she worked and paid into the Social Security system, there is a pretty good chance you are due reduced widower’s benefits already. If you think you can live on whatever the amount is (and it might surprise you how much it is), then you could claim those benefits until age 66 and at that point switch to 100 percent of your retirement benefit. Or you could wait until 70 and switch to 132 percent. Because you are widowed, you are not impacted by the elimination of the “file and restrict” rules in the new budget bill.

I am about to turn 66 and went to my Social Security office about a week ago to apply for benefits. The Social Security clerk asked about dependents. My wife is only 60 and won’t be in my Social Security picture for a couple years. And all of our children are grown.

It won’t impact your own Social Security benefit, but your wife and daughter will lose their monthly checks. Your daughter won’t be due benefits because it sounds like she will be making Tues., 4/1/14 more (WAY more) than the Social Security earnings limit of $15,720. Your wife is getting what are called “young mother’s benefits.” And the only reason she gets those checks is because she is caring for a child who qualifies for benefits on your account. So if your daughter is no longer eligible for dependent benefits on your record, your wife will no longer be eligible either.

The “Franciscan” name was inspired by the heritage of the Franciscan monks who settled in early California. In 1979, Wedgwood bought out Gladding, McBean and Co. and in 1984 relocated the operations to England. Wedgwood Waterford Royal Doulton produces Franciscan Ware today.
