ack in the Fall/Winter 2013 issue of Vallarta Lifestyles, we featured a multi-page article titled “Performing Arts Preview” to connect our readers with what seemed like a noticeable increase in onstage activity. Little did we know the following 15 months would bring such a diverse array of performers to Banderas Bay, confirming that Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit very well could become important performing arts destinations like other tourism cities in Mexico such as Guanajuato, Morelia and, of course, Mexico City.

Nowadays, any given night in town—particularly during the fall, winter and spring months—provides visitors and locals not only a variety of restaurants and art galleries to visit but also the opportunity to complement these outings with a broad range of concerts, recitals, lectures and plays. Visitors previously unaware of these options are ending their vacations gratified with the additional, unexpected possibilities. And folks considering retirement here can be excited to find yet another reason to consider Vallarta-Nayarit their permanent home. This being our annual Art issue, we wish to introduce these opportunities to you in a series of feature articles focused on the venues, artists and people adding such color and appeal to our destination.

At the same time, we are well aware that Puerto Vallarta did not become a visual arts destination overnight, so we also introduce you to some of Puerto Vallarta’s gallery owners, the folks responsible for much of the art in Vallarta. Their knowledge and expertise about the artists they represent is vast and essential in helping you make an informed decision when it’s time to consider a purchase for your home. And given the opportunity, many of them will delight with stories about Puerto Vallarta that undoubtedly will enrich your experience in town.

n la edición Otoño/Invierno 2013 de Vallarta Lifestyles, incluimos un artículo de varias páginas con un “Avance de Artes Escénicas” para presentar a nuestros lectores lo que parecía ser un incremento en actividades escénicas. Jamás nos imaginamos que en los siguientes 15 meses, llegaría a Bahía de Banderas una variedad tan diversa de espectáculos en vivo, confirmando que Puerto Vallarta y Riviera Nayarit podrían convertirse en importantes destinos de artes escénicas como otras ciudades turísticas de México, como Guanajuato, Morelia y por supuesto, el Distrito Federal.

Adriana García first arrived in Puerto Vallarta from Mexico City with her family for a short vacation a decade ago, with the dream of possibly staying. A week later, when the vacation was over, her sister simply asked, “Are you staying or leaving?” Like many others, Adriana chose to stay, despite the fact that her only previous visit had been ten years prior. “I thought I might live by the beach, open a bar and party full time,” she recalls.

Thanks to her altruistic upbringing, Adriana had ample experience—either as an employee or a volunteer—with several important non-profits back in Mexico City, such as Amnesty International, where she developed her interpersonal skills. While job hunting, The Westin Resort & Spa in Marina Vallarta took notice and offered her a position in their poolside recreational activities area.

There, she experienced a life-changing event when the resort arranged for a terminally ill child to see and enjoy the ocean for the first time. Adriana quickly involved the guests who happened to be by the pool at the moment, resulting in an unexpectedly memorable experience for all involved. Shortly thereafter, she accepted a position with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Several years and projects later, Adriana was strongly recommended as the ideal candidate to take over as director of the Los Mangos Public Library. For her, it was love at first sight, accepting the job in May 2012. Since then, her hands-on approach has allowed important projects to come to fruition, the library blossoming as Puerto Vallarta’s most important cultural center. PO

Adriana García llegó a Puerto Vallarta de vacaciones con su familia hace una década con el sueño y la posibilidad de quedarse. Una semana después, al concluir el viaje y llegada la hora de regresar a la Ciudad de México, su hermana le preguntó “¿te quedas o te vas?” Como muchas otras personas, ella decidió quedarse, a pesar de que sólo había venido una vez, diez años antes. “Yo pensaba vivir en la playa, abrir un bar y estar en la fiesta constante,” recuerda.

Habiendo crecido en un hogar altruísta, Adriana tenía mucha experiencia como empleada o voluntaria de importantes asociaciones civiles en la Ciudad de México, como Amnistía Internacional, donde desarrolló su interés por ayudar a sus semejantes.

Buscando trabajo, el Westin Resort & Spa en Marina Vallarta le ofreció una oportunidad coordinando actividades para huéspedes en el área de piscinas.

Cuando el hotel ofreció sus servicios a la familia de una niña que padecía de una enfermedad terminal y quería ver el mar por primera vez, Adriana participó en un evento que le cambiaría la vida al involucrar a los huéspedes que en ese momento disfrutaban de las instalaciones. Poco tiempo después aceptó una oferta de trabajo de la fundación Make-A-Wish.

Varios años y proyectos después, Adriana fue recomendada como la candidata ideal como directora de la Biblioteca Los Mangos. para ella, fue amor a primera vista, y comenzó a fungir como tal en mayo del 2012. Desde entonces, ha dedicado su tiempo y energía a la venerable institución, alcanzando importantes objetivos al consolidarse la biblioteca como el centro cultural más importante de Puerto Vallarta.

A

nna’s story is the kind we love to hear—not only is it a good one, she seems to glow as she recounts it. While she and future husband David, were still dating, they scheduled a trip to Puerto Vallarta to test their compatibility. It was New Year’s and short-notice accommodations were hard to come by. However, by fluke, they benefited from a last-minute cancellation at the scenic Cuatro Vientos Hotel overlooking El Centro.

A narrow list of criteria—good schools, clean air, safety, security, and accepting of yoga, of course—led them back to Puerto Vallarta some eight years ago. Interestingly enough, they found themselves standing at a hilltop corner, barely half a block from Cuatro Vientos Hotel, where they had confirmed their mutual love years ago. A former restaurant, La Nube, stood before them, for sale. “I looked at it, and I could see our home and our yoga practice as clear as day,” she recalls.

They purchased and built their home. Two years later, she opened Davanna Yoga, one of Puerto Vallarta’s most successful yoga studios.

Intrepid self-promoters with a strong business sense, Anna and David traveled the world for two decades, accepting employment in several Asian and Latin American countries and taking in their cultural and spiritual surroundings in between leaves of absence. Anna’s curiosity about everything around her led her to discover yoga through a chance encounter with an instructor in 1991. Ever since, she has been in constant search of how to be in her body and how to help others do the same.

Eventually, she and David married.

When asked for advice for people considering a life outside the United States or in Vallarta, she smiles and promptly answers, “Close your eyes and jump.” PO

l relato de Anna es de los que disfrutamos más—no sólo es una buena historia, ella parece deslumbrar cuando la platica. Antes de casarse, ella y su pareja, David, tomaron vacaciones a Puerto Vallarta para ver si disfrutaban viajar juntos. Era fin de año y no había mucha disponibilidad de alojamiento. Sin embargo, de casualidad encontraron hospedaje en el Hotel Cuatro Vientos, en las colinas detrás de El Centro.

Siendo emprendedores y viajeros incansables, Anna y David recorrieron el mundo por dos décadas, aceptando empleos en varios países asiáticos y latinoamericanos, absorbiendo la esencia cultural y espiritual de cada lugar cuando les era posible. Gracias a su curiosidad por todo lo que la rodea, Anna descubrió el yoga en 1991 a través de un instructor y desde entonces ha estado en la búsqueda constante de cómo “estar” en su cuerpo y cómo ayudar a otros a hacer lo mismo. Eventualmente, ella y David contrajeron nupcias.

Gracias a una específica lista de requisitos—buenas escuelas, aire limpio, seguridad y una comunidad interesada en yoga, por supuesto—regresaron a Puerto Vallarta hace unos ocho años. Curiosamente, se encontraban parados en la cima de una colina, a menos de una cuadra del Hotel Cuatro Vientos donde habían consolidado su relación años atrás. Frente a ellos estaba el antiguo restaurante La Nube, que estaba en venta.

“Recuerdo que lo miraba y claramente pude ver en local nuestro hogar y nuestro estudio de yoga,” nos comenta.

Compraron el inmueble y lo convirtieron en residencia.

Dos años después, abrió Davanna Yoga, uno de los estudios de yoga más exitosos de Puerto Vallarta.

INTERNATIONAL SURFING ASSOCIATION PICKS SAYULITA The International Surfing Association (ISA) just announced that the 2015 ISA World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship (WSUPPC) will take place in Sayulita, Riviera Nayarit, May 10 - 17. This will be the first time Mexico hosts the event.

FRESHMAN CLASSIC ROCK FESTIVAL ENDS SUCCESSFULLY The inaugural Vallarta-Nayarit Classic Rock Festival took place December 12 - 14 in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, both destinations welcoming 20 acts appearing at the festival, including Americana rockers BoDeans; blues favorites The Fabulous Thunderbirds; rock-a-billy specialists Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats; country rockers Poco, Pure Prairie League and Firefall; and iconic classic rock bands Jefferson Starship, Kansas, Cheap Trick, Foghat and Spencer Davis Group.

Classic rock fans enjoyed the feel-good Mexican vibe, with gourmet tacos and tequilas, along with other traditional culinary offerings of the region, served by local restaurants. Supported by both the Puerto Vallarta Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau, the weekend-long event included a celebrity golf outing to benefit DIF, a local children’s charity; a special exhibition of famous album cover art and concert photography; and dedicated events in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit.

In addition to the headliners, several solo artists and singers’ sets were backed by the festival’s allstar “house band,” including Dave Mason (Traffic), Gary Wright (best known for his smash hit “Dreamweaver”), Craig Fuller (lead singer of both Little Feat and Little River Band), former Journey lead singer Steve Augeri, former Grand Funk Railroad lead singer Mark Farner, Monkees frontman Micky Dolenz and blues legend Sam Moore (Sam and Dave). Discounted room rates and exclusive packages were offered by the event’s local hotel partners, including the Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta, the Villa Group, Bel Air Collection Resort and Spa and Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort, setting a strong foundation for a follow-up event next year. Launched in 2012, the ISA WSUPPC has increased exponentially since its inception, with 277 top-notch athletes from 27 countries participating. The Mexican team has participated in the first three editions of the event, earning the Overall Team bronze medal in Peru in 2013.

For the upcoming competition, over 300 of the world’s greatest surfers from over 30 countries will compete in 11 disciplines. The 2015 ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship will include men’s and women’s surfing, technical, distance, and the team relay races.

Sayulita has long been considered one of Mexico’s top surfing destinations, and it is located less than 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. LOCAL HOTELS RENOVATE Several Puerto Vallarta hotels are re-inventing themselves with the common goal of attracting new travelers for what many expect to be the best season in years.

On Puerto Vallarta’s South Shore The Blue Bay Club, a structure that remained unused for many years due to damages caused by Hurricane Kenna, is undergoing major overhauling and now will be operated by the Fiesta Americana chain, becoming their second property in Puerto Vallarta. The new hotel, which is scheduled to open during the second half of 2015, will feature 400 luxurious rooms, swimming pools and a brand-new convention center, as well as other amenities.

s ubiquitous locally as it is abroad—Americans eat about 350 slices per second—pizza is one of the most popular cravings we can think of. Patricia Gawle Arte y Cerámica Patricia recalls how her parents did not want her studying ceramics, so instead she earned a Graphic Design and Fine Arts degree. Eventually, she began recreating some of her paintings on tile murals, building a successful business.

She rediscovered clay at El Tuito, south of Puerto Vallarta, which reminds her of her countryside upbringing in New England. To date, she collects her own clay from the ground—as opposed to prepared, from an art supply store—to create her oneof-a-kind whimsical sculptures at her working studio.

Patricia recuerda que sus padres no querían que estudiara cerámica, por lo que tuvo que estudiar diseño gráfico y se graduó con un título en Arte. Eventualmente comenzó a recrear algunas de sus pinturas en murales de azulejo, creando una empresa exitosa. Redescubrió la arcilla en El Tuito, al sur de Puerto Vallarta, lugar que le recuerda su infancia en una granja en Nueva Inglaterra. A la fecha le gusta recoger su arcilla del mismo suelo—en vez de adquirirla en tiendas especializadas—para crear sus esculturas únicas en su estudio.

Colectika Aside from their vast knowledge about high-end Mexican folk art, Kevin and Betty can tell you amazing stories about the Mexican artists they represent, particularly those who live in remote towns in rural Mexico and had never seen the ocean prior to coming to Puerto Vallarta. “It’s memorable every time!” Kevin chuckles. They are particularly fond of Huichol art and can speak for hours about the curious symbols you will find along the Malecón floor.

Galería Contempo As a child, Rodolfo always was given the opportunity to select his own extracurricular classes, eventually discovering painting. After closing his successful Adobe Café restaurant and renting the space for retail, he found himself in need of creative activity. He was invited to join the staff at Gallería Dante, where he worked for five years, learning the ropes under owner Joe Guarniere’s skilled guidance. Five years ago, he decided to open his own gallery, which has been thriving ever since.

Rodolfo recuerda que cuando era niño, siempre le dieron la oportunidad de elegir sus propias clases, y así eventualmente descubrió la pintura. Después de cerrar su exitoso restaurante Adobe Café y poner el local en renta, sintió la necesidad de cambiar su giro laboral. Recibió una invitación de trabajar en Galería Dante, donde permaneció durante cinco años, conociendo el mundo del arte a través del propietario, Joe Guarniere. Ambos Galería Buying the building in 2010, formerly an Argentinean restaurant, with the idea to do artists exchange with their Montana gallery (hence the name Ambos or “Both”), they found getting art and artists across the border to be more complicated than expected. Now they work with local artists, favoring collage artists, as Laura is a collage artist herself. A former Pan-Am stewardess, with a Spanish minor in college, Laura has been visiting Mexico since she was 21. Daughter Stephanie is an accomplished painter, among other talents.

Habiendo adquirido el inmueble en 2010—antes ocupado por un restaurante argentino—con la idea de hacer intercambios de arte y artistas con su galería en Montana (por ello el nombre de Ambos), se dieron cuenta rápidamente que dicha idea sería un tanto complicada de ejecutar. Ahora favorecen a artistas locales, y en especial aquellos que hacen collage, la especialidad de Laura.

Ella comenzó a visitar México a los 21 años, habiendo sido azafata de Pan-Am y estudiado español en la universidad. Su hija, Stephanie, también es pintora.

Puerto Vallarta ha sido reconocido por décadas por su rica diversidad en el ámbito de las artes plásticas. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo, nos queda claro que las artes escénicas han llegado para quedarse.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the art-related highlight of the week in Puerto Vallarta was the Wednesday evening art walk in the El Centro neighborhood. Fortunately, the art walks are still available, but unless you’ve been away for a few years, you probably have noticed a consistent increase in art-related activity throughout Banderas Bay. And much of it is not even cast in bronze or hanging as part of a gallery exhibition. For decades, Puerto Vallarta has been renowned for its rich diversity in visual arts; however, the time has come to bring performing arts into the limelight.

With only so many hours any given afternoon or evening, some art purists might cringe at the thought of having to share with a crop of new venues and performers attempting to capture tourists’ and locals’ attention as they choose ways to enjoy their leisure time in town. We decided to touch base with some art gallery owners to get their thoughts on the matter (see Meet the Gallery Owners, pg. 26). Visual artist Kathleen Carrillo, who uses her gallery to showcase her own creations, chimed in eloquently with a sentiment that is shared, for the most part, by the others: “Audiences likely to enjoy a stage production are more inclined to appreciate the immense variety of visual art offerings in town and purchase something for their home.”

Con tan sólo un número limitado de horas disponibles durante cualquier tarde o noche, quizás algunos puristas del arte frunzan el ceño ante la posibilidad de ceder la atención de los turistas y visitantes a una serie de nuevos espacios y artistas tratando de capturar su interés al descubrir nuestra ciudad. Decidimos visitar a algunos de los propietarios de galerías para conocer su opinión al respecto (ver Conoce a los Galeristas, pg. 26). For any type of art to thrive, there must be a delicate balance of quality and quantity, as well as supply and demand. When it comes to performing arts, there has been no lack of venues with stages in town, be it restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, even the outdoor amphitheater at Los Arcos. Well-equipped venues, however, are essential to draw increasingly talented performers who have come to expect them elsewhere. The opening of Teatro Vallarta in 2010 allowed larger-scale concerts to take place in town without having to build temporary outdoor stages or rely on multi-purpose halls. Prior to that, the 300-seat Cecatur Auditorium, located two blocks from Puerto Vallarta’s main plaza, was the largest theater in town.

And while The Palm Cabaret and Bar in Olas Altas has been the grande dame of cabaret, drag and comedy acts for 15 years, Act II Entertainment’s complex on Basilio Badillo street opened its doors in fall 2013, complementing the offerings with a small theater, piano bar with comfortable sitting areas, and an intimate cabaret space, ideal for small ensembles. Just a few weeks ago, the Nuevo Vallarta Stage & Forum, a small theater with a raised stage, began presenting its own musical productions, along with other booked talent, to audiences in Nuevo Vallarta and surrounding communities.

Para que cualquier manifestación artística pueda prosperar, debe existir un delicado balance de calidad y cantidad, así como de oferta y demanda. En cuanto a las artes escénicas se refieren, no han faltado en la ciudad espacios con escenarios, ya sea restaurantes, hoteles, centros nocturnos o inclusive el teatro al aire libre en Los Arcos. Dicho eso, los espacios bien equipados son indispensables para satisfacer las necesidades de artistas más talentosos.

La inauguración del Teatro Vallarta en 2010 permitió la producción de conciertos de mayor escala en la ciudad sin la necesidad de instalar gradas temporales en el exterior o utilizar salas de convenciones. Antes de ello, el Auditorio Cecatur a dos cuadras de la plaza principal—con capacidad de casi 300 asistentes—era el teatro más grande de la ciudad.

The Palm Cabaret and Bar en Olas Altas ha sido el lugar emblemático para espectáculos de cabaret, comedia y travesti durante 15 años, la apertura en otoño del 2013 del complejo de Act II Entertainment en Basilio Badillo vino a complementar su oferta con un pequeño teatro, un piano bar con cómodos sillones y un espacio íntimo para espectáculos de cabaret o grupos pequeños. Y tan sólo hace unas semanas, el Nuevo Vallarta Stage & Forum, un pequeño teatro con escenario elevado, comenzó a ofrecer sus propias producciones musicales y otros artistas al público de Nuevo Vallarta y comunidades aledañas.

Many celebrities book passage to Puerto Vallarta, but not all of them are here on vacation. Full-time residents look forward to the seasonal return of many artists who choose to perform here year after year, along with the local talent the city has to offer. Consistent with the opening of new venues in the past few years—along with the obligatory improvement of other stages—the amount and artistry of Mexican and international talent arriving to perform in town for the first time is on the rise, with many scheduling return trips later in the season or the following year after a successful run.

Word of mouth plays a pivotal role, as artists relay touring experiences with their peers, so venue owners eagerly assist with logistical arrangements for them, from airport pickup and drop-off to providing housing during their stay. And talent booked to perform aboard cruise ships that dock in Puerto Vallarta for a day or overnight also are aware of the changing trend and increasingly make inquiries about performance opportunities. Seasonal performers, such as acclaimed Canadian singer Kim Kuzma, who performs twice a week at Act II’s The Red Room, make Puerto Vallarta their home for six months every year, while others are permanent residents, such as Benjamin Schatz of the outrageous Kinsey Sicks, who leaves Vallarta frequently to meet the “dragapella” quartet’s busy performing schedule around the world, returning for an annual season at The Palm Cabaret and Bar. The increasing diversity is cultural, as well, with all sorts of offerings for different folks. The local theater scene en español, for example, has seen a surge in talent and production quality lately, with production companies such as Grupo de Teatro Dionisio and Perro Bravo offering productions that have garnered regional awards in theater competitions. The Riviera Nayarit Tourism Bureau was pivotal in the organization of the first Vallarta-Nayarit Classic Rock Festival this past December, and Puerto Vallarta was host to Luminiafest, a spectacular international fireworks festival with spectacular performances by acclaimed Mexican singer Lila Downs and other luminaries.

The Audiences EL PÚBLICO

One might think that a town teeming with concerts, shows and plays would attract similarly ample audiences. This, however, has not necessarily been the case. To ensure the success of any given performance, venues now have no choice but to implement targeted promotional strategies to attract discerning audiences, who, in turn, expect a good bang for their peso. From fliers and posters to Facebook events and print advertising, the search for a foolproof promotional solution is elusive to most.

And let’s face it: it will take a while for some to develop a solid connection between Puerto Vallarta and the performing arts, a town that for decades has won its acclaim for its beaches, gastronomy, golf and nautical activities. The value of word-of-mouth promotion should not be dismissed, however; it can be a blessing for short- and medium-length runs, though not as useful for one-time performances.

And of course, there is something to be said about the quality of the performances themselves, along with their admission price. For example, the artistry is clearly evident in every one of Kim Kuzma’s weekly performances, thanks to inventive renditions of popular songs and a top-notch band that spends many hours per week rehearsing and polishing each of them. Their commitment and effort have paid off, becoming the act with “most online tickets sold” last season, according to VallartaTickets.com. Los Bambinos, another hardworking band with weekly performances, has been cultivating new and repeat audiences with consistent attendance for years at Roxy Rock House.

Puerto Vallarta did not become a superb dining, visual arts or golf destination overnight, and the key players committed to transforming it into a performing arts destination will have to continue developing long-term strategies for such a transformation to take place successfully (see sidebar). In the meantime, for those who like an evening out enjoying a good jazz quartet, classical recital, serious play or farce, circus act or drag performer, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit are becoming an increasingly appealing destination.

Cualquiera se imaginaría que en una ciudad con conciertos, espectáculos y obras teatrales en abundancia, el público estaría presente de manera constante y los foros estarían llenos.

Pero éste no es siempre el caso. Para garantizar el éxito de cualquier producción, hoy en día los foros deben implementar estrategias promocionales bien enfocadas para atraer la atención del púbico quien a la vez tiene expectativas de disfrutar un buen espectáculo a cambio de pagar por verlo. Sin embargo, ya sean volantes y carteles, o eventos en Facebook y anuncios publicitarios, la búsqueda de un método promocional infalible continúa.

También hay que ser objetivos: crear una conexión sólida entre el público local y Puerto Vallarta, un destino reconocido por décadas por sus playas, gastronomía, campos de golf y actividades náuticas, tomará su tiempo. Nuevamente, las recomendaciones de boca en boca son de mucha ayuda, particularmente para espectáculos programados por varios días o semanas.

Finalmente, es indispensable tomar en cuenta la calidad de las presentaciones, así como su precio de admisión. Por ejemplo, el compromiso con su arte es evidente en cada una de las presentaciones semanales de Kim Kuzma, gracias a sus creativas versiones de canciones populares, así como una banda musical que invierte muchas horas a la semana ensayando y puliendo cada canción. Su compromiso ha dado excelentes resultados, convirtiéndose en el espectáculo con “más boletos vendidos en línea” la temporada pasada, a través del portal de VallartaTickets. com. Los Bambinos, otro grupo musical con presentaciones semanales, lleva años cultivando a su público en el Roxy Rock House, y sus conciertos siempre tienen mucho público.

Puerto Vallarta no se convirtió en una sensación gastronómica, de golf o de artes plásticas de la noche a la mañana, y los protagonistas comprometidos a transformar el destino en uno en el que las artes escénicas son igualmente importantes tendrán que continuar desarrollando estrategias a largo plazo para que esto suceda de manera exitosa (ver apartado).

Mientras tanto, para aquellos que disfrutan de un buen cuarteto de jazz, recital de música clásica, teatro serio o comedias, espectáculos de circo e inclusive un buen show travesti, Vallarta-Nayarit se está atrayendo cada vez más amantes de las artes escénicas.

Still in its infancy, the Puerto Vallarta Performing Arts Alliance is a coalition of venue managers, producers, performers, members of the press and enthusiasts with a common goal: developing, collecting and sharing useful resources for the local and visiting performing arts community (artists, venues and the general public) to foster Puerto Vallarta as an increasingly appealing performing arts destination for local residents, as well as national and international visitors.

eyond the well-known fact that Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit offer an amazing array of dining options for many tastes and budgets, there are a number of restaurants that also feature live music for your enjoyment.

In some instances, the music is designed to soothe, providing an almost imperceptible backdrop to a relaxing experience. In others, lively performers are meant to elicit a fiesta atmosphere. And then, there are places where the music is so outstanding—La Boquita’s weekly flamenco nights at Antonio’s, for example—you’ll feel self-conscious directing any attention to your meal while the musicians are playing!

If you’d like to get a taste of what local and visiting musicians have to offer, here is a list of several restaurants that feature ongoing live performers (along with prevailing styles) or schedule special guests on occasion. In any event, it is always best to contact the restaurant ahead of time to know what to expect.

When it comes to tipping musicians performing in restaurants, things can be a bit confusing for those who are not in the know.

For the most part, entertainers at fine restaurants around town are hired by the venues and use a discreet tip jar located at the stage.

The choice and amount to tip are basically up to you, but your waiter will gladly suggest a recommended amount, for reference.

Things are not as clear cut when it comes to musicians performing at sidewalk restaurants or on the beach, however. You can’t blame a traveling musician for trying to make an honest buck, but at the same time, it’s good to know what is expected of you. For example, you may find yourself engrossed in deep conversation with a friend when suddenly you notice there is someone ay-ay-ay-ing right next to you! More often than not, musicians will ask politely if you would like to hear a song before they start to play, but not always.

Once they begin, the expectation is that you will tip them, so it’s often best to politely say no, gracias (no, thanks) from the get-go.

Musicians on the beach or public buses simply go at it and collect whatever tips they can once they are done. Again, consider it part of the local flavor but do not feel obliged to tip.

¿PROPINAS, SÍ O NO?

Cuando llega la hora de considerar propinas para los músicos en restaurantes, las cosas no son siempre claras para nuestros visitantes extranjeros. En la mayoría de los casos, los restaurantes de la ciudad contratan a sus músicos directamente y ellos suelen colocar un bote junto a sus instrumentos para quien decida ofrecerles una propina. La cantidad es opción personal y puedes consultar con tu mesero para que te de una sugerencia al respecto.

Todo cambia cuando se trata de músicos ambulantes en restaurantes al aire libre o en la playa. Tratar de ganarse el pan tocando en la calle no tiene nada de malo, pero tampoco está de más el conocer el protocolo. Por ejemplo, suele suceder que estás en el café medio de una intensa conversación con algún amigo y antes de que te das cuenta, ¡ya está algún cantante a tu lado haciendo lo suyo! La mayoría te preguntarán amablemente si deseas escuchar alguna canción o no. Pero no siempre lo hacen.

Una vez que comienzan a tocar, su expectativa es que pagarás por la canción, por lo que es mejor decir no gracias amablemente antes de que comienzen a tocar.

Los músicos en la playa o en camiones urbanos simplemente comienzan a tocar, lo pidas o no, y se sustentan con las propinas que reciben. Considéralo como parte del folclor local pero no te sientas obligado a ofrecerles una.

Four of Disney’s most endearing heroines answer the question as they meet some 15 years after their happy movie endings in Mexican playwright Tomás Urtusástegui’s successful comedy, Princesas Desesperadas. CUISINE SPOTLIGHT One of Daiquiri Dick’s new entrees this season, their Mediterranean-style chicken, prepared with shallots, rosemary and lime juice, is served with a brown butter sauce over a bed of fresh, aromatic herbs, including basil, arugula, cilantro and spearmint. It is perfect for a light dinner, as you enjoy one of Puerto Vallarta’s emblematic sunsets over Los Muertos Beach.

Chef Ignacio Uribe suggests pairing it with freshly made sangria prepared with caramelized fruit, another new offering on their menu. “We are constantly trying to keep things fresh, both literally and figuratively,” he comments.

CHEF IGNACIO URIBE Originally born and raised in Paso Ancho, just outside Puerto Vallarta, Uribe joined the Daiquiri Dick’s family in 1991 as a cook and has been learning the ropes ever since. He has been proudly representing Daiquiri Dick’s international cuisine as executive chef since 2006.

Inspired by similar events in cities in the United States and around the world, Great Vallarta Race is a team challenge, with participants following clues as they navigate their way through Puerto Vallarta on foot. Great Vallarta Race is ideal for groups of friends, couples or families, as you are expected to join or create a team of two to five.

The PuRR Project, one of Puerto Vallarta’s many animal-related nonprofits, has joined forces with Superior Tours Vallarta, offering a tour that allows cat lovers to visit their no-kill shelter, located just north of Puerto Vallarta. The facility is located in a rural community within Valle de Banderas in Riviera Nayarit, allowing participants a glimpse of Mexico unlike what they experience in the city’s tourist areas.

“We love to involve visitors and volunteers with our projects at our PuRR Ranch, but we’ll be the first to admit that it’s not very easy to find,” commented Purr Project board member Marilyn Khan. In the past, the project had to rely on volunteers who would arrange to meet visitors at a well-known location and carpool them to the shelter. Thanks to the alliance with Superior Tours Vallarta, interested parties now can make the journey in a comfortable, air-conditioned van with amenities, tour guides and narration along the way.

Once at the PuRR Ranch, visitors can mingle with and help feed over 200 resident felines roaming free over a half-acre parcel of land, enjoying an up-close and personal view of the amount of work, energy and resources it takes to look after Puerto Vallarta’s oft-neglected animals. Vallarta and Nayarit offer a wide variety of options when it comes to location; you can be in the city, a small out-of-the-way village, a gated community, mega-development, high on a hillside overlooking the bay, on the beach, within a marina or along a golf course fairway.

The types of property here are greater than anywhere else in Mexico.

2. View: In warm-weather places such as Vallarta, where considerable time can be spent outside on the terrace, having a nice view is worth considering. On the south side of Vallarta, the foothills of the Sierra Madres provide spectacular bay and city views. But there are other views to consider, such as golf fairways (someone else mows your backyard), marinas (easy to keep an eye on your boat) and lush jungle (quite spectacular).

3. Size: How large a place will you need? Will friends and relatives be visiting, and do you want them to stay with you? Usually, a second room that serves as an office/TV room/guest room is a good idea. Regarding condominium living, how big a building/project do you want? Usually, the larger the project (more units), the more amenities provided.

4. Amenities: If you have a strong interest in boating or golf, you’ll probably want to be located as close to a marina or golf course as possible. If you enjoy dining out and socializing, you won’t want to live somewhere remote. If you surf, swim or enjoy long walks on the beach, you’ll want easy access to the ocean and surf breaks.

5. Time: How much time will you actually use your vacation property?

If you’re spending any more than four months, however, you probably will want your own place and will go with full-time ownership. Another option, if you plan to use your property for just a few weeks a year for now but intend to spend more time here in the future, perhaps even retiring here, is to purchase and then rent out the unit when you’re not using it, using the income to pay maintenance costs and part of the mortgage (if there is one). Demand for rentals has been strong recently, so you may be able to rent out your place frequently, especially if it positively incorporates these four factors: good view, location, size and amenities. Keep in mind, however, that there are only four to six strong months for rentals each year and that dealing with coordinating the rentals can take up a lot of your time.

TRADITIONAL FORMS OF VACATION OWNERSHIP The traditional forms of vacation ownership in Puerto Vallarta involve full-time home or condominium living, condominiums making about 80 percent of this market. There’s a wide variety of options available for nearly every potential vacation homeowner. Most of the current market is made up of re-sale properties, as the new-product market slowed during the past five years. That is changing, however, and developers are building once again, most offering a product that matches a different buyer than in the past: one looking for something smaller, less expensive and with fewer amenities, basically to keep ongoing and initial investment costs low. A downside to new-product purchasing is not always knowing what you’ll eventually get; however, on the upside, whatever it is will be “new” and built with the latest building products and designs.

Purchasing existing real estate may be safer in some respects (you know what you’re getting), but there’s nothing quite like buying a brand-new property that you can participate in designing and decorating. With traditional forms of vacation ownership (vs alternative forms), there’s also the potential added benefit of appreciation.

Traditional second-home ownership appeals to those seeking a vacation setting to share with family and friends and/or use for business whenever they choose. Owners, however, have full responsibility for maintaining the property, which may include hiring a management company.

FULL-TIME CONDOMINIUMS For most people, condominium living is the way to go. It’s simpler to maintain and easy to lock up and leave when you return home. Yes, you have to put up with neighbors, perhaps on all sides (consider that when selecting a unit), and yes, you have to share the responsibilities of repair and maintenance with others (the good: you share the costs; the bad: you don’t always get what you want but what the majority wants). Condominiums can be tall towers offering spectacular views. They can be situated right downtown, making it easy to get around. But it is communal living; you need to realize that and be willing to live with the good and not-so-good. continued on pg. 79

FULL-TIME HOMES There are both new and re-sale houses, but the selection is more limited than it is for condominiums. And it currently is even more limited if you’re looking for a developer-built home. If you want to create something of your own, however, you can buy a lot and build your dream home and get exactly what you want. With home ownership, concerns regarding neighbors are less, and you certainly won’t have anyone above or below you. But the cost of operation is solely your responsibility. You don’t have to share the pool or garden areas, so you’ll have much more privacy, but you alone are paying for the maintenance. View properties are a little harder to find, unless you’re looking at the South or North Shores of the bay, where there is more elevation. Most vacation homes in Vallarta are found along golf courses or waterways, such as in Nuevo Vallarta. They are inside gated communities, which provide more security, if that’s a concern.

Most new homes currently being built are in the higher-end of the market, in luxury developments such as Bolongo and Kupuri in Punta de Mita, Punta Sayulita in Sayulita, and El Paredón on the South Shore of the bay.

ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF VACATION OWNERSHIP For those who only want to invest for the amount of time they actually will be vacationing, there are alternatives that involve purchasing just a portion or fraction of the weeks’ or months of the year. TIMESHARE / VACATION OWNERSHIP Timeshare ownership may be purchased through deeded property ownership, right-touse or a more flexible points-based program.

Owners purchase a condo or villa for one or more weeks use within a fixed or “floating time” system, which allows scheduling each year’s vacation during the most convenient week within a specified season. With timeshare, consumers have the opportunity to purchase time at resorts offering a wide range of amenities at different destinations. While most vacation ownership villas have two bedrooms and two baths, floor plans range from studios to three or more bedrooms.

Ownership is a one-time purchase, which often is developer financed, owners then paying an annual maintenance fee based on the unit size, location and amenities. Timeshare is not intended to be an investment opportunity, rather an alternative to traditional vacation accommodations and a way to hedge against “vacation inflation.” Pricing varies considerably based on the five factors mentioned above, but usually ranges from $15,000 to $50,000 USD per week. Puerto Vallarta was one of the first and most successful timeshare destinations in Mexico and offers a wide variety of different types of products, plans and pricing.

FRACTIONAL OWNERSHIP PRIVATE RESIDENCE CLUBS A step above timeshare is fractional ownership, which usually comes with a recorded deed and title. Fractional ownership has the benefits of second-home ownership, but for a fraction of the cost and without the maintenance responsibilities. Considering the average vacation-home buyer uses the property just three to four weeks a year, fractional ownership tends to be more in line with the actual use of the vacation home. Additionally, fractional properties are generally affiliated with high-end hotel companies or high-end boutique operators, so owners have the benefits of personalized services and amenities.

Fractional interests can range from $60,000 to $650,000 USD per interest, based on floor plan, location and size of the fraction.

In addition to the purchase price, there also are annual maintenance fees to consider.

Fractional ownership has not been as popular as timeshare in Vallarta and Nayarit, but there are programs available. Most notable are the Four Seasons program in Punta Mita, continued on pg. 62

DESTINATION CLUBS Members of a destination club are not buying a specific property, but rather the right to use any of a portfolio of homes owned or operated by the club company. With few exceptions, they offer a non-equity-based membership emphasizing a broad selection of vacation-home experiences. Most destination clubs also offer members concierge services.

When it comes to vacation ownership, especially in and around Puerto Vallarta, there are myriad options available to you. Getting exactly what you want will involve first knowing what your needs are, obtaining as much product information as you can on what meets your needs, and then weighing one against the other. Spending a little time now to think it fully through can ensure long-term enjoyment for many years to come.

The average length of stay at destination clubs ranges from one to nine weeks, and costs include a one-time fee ranging from $20,000 to $1.5 million USD, which is typically between 80 and 100 percent refundable if they choose to exit the program. Annual dues range from $1,500 to $30,000 USD. The club may also charge a nightly fee while guests are in residence. The most well-known destination club in the region is Exclusive Resorts in Real del Mar, just north of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

CONDO HOTELS Condo hotels offer a portion of their hotel room inventory for sale to the public. The owner may use it for vacation or corporate housing needs or place it in a rental program, typically managed by the hotel.

Owners then receive proceeds from the rentals. Buyers enjoy the benefits of owning real estate in a desirable location coupled with hotel amenities and services. Annual dues also apply. Condo hotel pricing varies by real estate market trends; however, currently there are few options available for condo hotels in Vallarta.

TIEMPO COMPARTIDO En el caso de tiempo compartido, se puede adquirir un título de propiedad, derecho de uso, e incluso hay programas más flexibles basados en puntaje. Si tomas en cuenta que alguien en busca de una residencia vacacional suele planear usarla durante tres o cuatro semanas al año, la propiedad fraccional ofrece en promedio la misma cantidad de tiempo. Aunque no han sido tan populares como el tiempo compartido en Vallarta y Nayarit, hay programas disponibles. Por ejemplo, el Four Seasons en Punta Mita, La Estancia en Flamingos, Paradise Village en Nuevo Vallarta, y recientemente regresó al mercado uno de los primeros y más exitosos programas de propiedad fraccional en todo México: el espectacular desarrollo de Ocho Cascadas en Conchas Chinas, justo al sur de Puerto Vallarta.

CLUBES VACACIONALES Los miembros de un club vacacional no adquieren una propiedad específica, sino el derecho de programar vacaciones en cualquiera de las residencias o propiedades administradas por la compañía del club. En su mayoría ofrecen membrecias cooperativas poniendo énfasis en una amplia variedad de experiencias vacacionales. La mayoría de los clubes vacaciones también ofrecen a sus miembros servicios de concierge.

La estancia promedio en clubes vacacionales va de una a nueve semanas y su costo varía desde $20,000 hasta $1.5 millones USD, con un reembolso típico del 80 al 100 por ciento si el comprador decide dejar el programa.

Las cuotas anuales varían desde $1,500 hasta $30,000 USD. Algunos clubes también cobran una cuota diaria mientras los huéspedes disfrutan de su residencia. El más reconocido club vacacional de la región es Exclusive Resorts en Real del Mar, justo al norte de La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

CONDO HOTELES Los condo hoteles ofrecen al público una porción de su inventario a la venta.
