MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL DIRECTOR

2017-18 was a year of reflection, planning and growth for the American School of Barcelona. We revised our mission and vision, using them to guide the creation of our new Strategic Plan that was developed through the Middle States Association (MSA) Re-Accreditation process.

After completing the MSA year-long self study, the ASB community -- board members, the senior leadership, staff, students and parents -- worked together on this plan and shared this plan with a MSA visiting team in January 2018.

Our self study and plan received a strong approval report and ASB was granted accreditation for the next seven years.

We started putting this plan into action during the 2017-18 academic year and we will use it as a guide for the years to come. This self study and strategic plan led to the following improvements at ASB in 2017-18.

The staff also invested a great deal of time planning for the new middle school and gym-auditorium facility, the high school renovation project, as well as the further development of our strategic plan. In short, we designed a school improvement plan, published it and began to bring it to life so we could better serve our students and our community.

This work demonstrates that our school is inspiring, full of life, and ambitious!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance of ASB. It focuses on the following three components of school leadership:

The Board and Leadership Team invested in our 5 MSA objectives with resources to help the school reach its vision: The Middle States Association (MSA) re-accreditation process helped our community define developmental objectives that will improve our students’ achievement and community experience. The resulting action plans helped define parameters for the budgets for this year and future school years. These objectives are now the foundation of our strategic plan.

ASB HISTORY In 1986, the Ministry of Education recognized ASB as a “foreign school� (centro extranjero).

October 2, 1962 was the first day of the history of the American School of Barcelona.

In 1977, ASB was given a large sum to leave the rented building in Pedralbes. With this money the school bought the land for the new building in Esplugues de Llobregat.

During the 1988-89 school year, we said goodbye to the Spanish national system classes.

From that time on all students would study the American High School program, with a series of obligatory subjects for the students who wished to study in Spanish universities.

In 1995, the Generalitat of Catalunya recognized the parity of the North American educational system with the Spanish system.

During the 2000s, ASB continued working on self improvement and was rewarded in 2001 when the Middle States Association re-accredited ASB, recognizing its academic excellence and standards. The alumni reunions, celebrations and goodbye parties for teachers have been an opportunity for many to touch base with their old classmates and teachers.

The idea to open the first and only school to provide an education in English belonged to Dr. Jose Maria Poal. Upon returning to Barcelona from US Dr. Poal was inspired to provide his children with an American education leading him to found the first American School in Barcelona.

During the 1970s, Spain went from dictatorship to democracy, enjoying the new liberty achieved, which ASB had been enjoying for over a decade. By the end of the 1970s, ASB had 400 students, about 300 in Esplugues and over 100 in la Font del Lleo.

The 1980s brought the reunification of all the students to the Esplugues campus.

The 1990s brought increased enrollment, better facilities, and official recognition for the quality of education that ASB provided. In the spring of 1990, ASB was accredited by the Middle States Association in the United States.

In 2007, ASB was the first school to start the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in English in Barcelona.

In 2014, a celebratory event was held to inaugurate the new ECC and Elementary building and the new library. US Ambassador James Costos was a special guest at the event.

In 2016, ASB launched a development program called Building Together to help unite the community and start an inclusive culture of giving.

2000s ASB celebrated its 50th anniversary.

ASB bought the land bordering our facilities and created an outdoor recreation space of about 3,100 square meters. The construction started in August 2017 and includes an outdoor amphitheater, artificial grass field, hard court play space, and gardens. In January 2018, the school completed the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) re-accreditation process and met all MSA standards.

STANDARDIZED TESTS Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) The MAP tests are standardized assessments designed to measure growth in student learning in reading and math. Students in grades 3 through 10 are tested each spring to help teachers plan instructional programs and measure student growth. ASB is significantly outperforming other international schools in both reading and math in most grade levels.

International Schools Assessment (ISA) The ISA tests are designed specifically for students in international schools around the globe and it tests mathematical literacy, reading, and writing. ASB students in grades 3 through 9 take the tests every winter. In reading and writing, ASB continues to outperform our peer group at other international schools in Europe, as well as the average of all international schools in the cohort. In math, we are above the averages in most grades.

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT THE ADOPTION OF TEACHER STRATEGIES GOLD IN PRESCHOOL Throughout the school year, ECC teachers and Teaching and Learning worked closely together updating the PK reporting system and assessments.

After much time and dedication, ECC approved the adoption of GOLD in preschool.

GOLD: Objectives for Development of Learning is a seamless research-based system intended for use with any developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum.

GOLD standards help teachers focus and assess children from toddler years all the way to kindergarten. These strategies are more detailed, facilitating more accurate assessment decisions as children’s learning was observed on a daily basis. We appreciate that GOLD is inclusive of all children, including English language learners and children with disabilities.

PK parents first received the updated GOLD progress report in November, offering a more detailed description of their child’s progress, highlighting how developmental indicators help to understand their child’s learning strengths and what next steps are still needed in order to continue to grow in content & skills. PK report cards were also updated making sure that the stated early learning standards, for 3 and 4 year olds, were aligned to identify developmental objectives that addressed all areas of development as well as content learning in literacy, math, science, social studies & the arts.

READING TO GALGOS/GREYHOUNDS There is a lot of research evidence indicating that children who read extensively have greater academic success.

A well-known reading program first launched in Chicago in 2013 called: Sit, Stay, Read, encourages children to read aloud alongside a dog, giving a sense of calmness and comfort which raises children’s level of confidence.

This approach has been transformative, not only in terms of reading but also in promoting general well-being and positive behavior among children with a diverse range of needs.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

SEESAW PARENT COMMUNICATION: As new technology replaces old ways of communication, ASB decided to improve parent communication by implementing Seesaw in preschool. Families were informed of its multiple benefits: stronger home-school connections, instant communication received by parents on their devices, in addition to serving as another observation tool for teachers to use as assessment for tracking student growth. PK families were able to view the work posted in their own child's journal/account. They received weekly reviews, announcements and monthly letters. Teachers appreciated receiving parent comments when photos were posted and Seesaw guaranteed confidentiality of student pictures at all times.

Since reading to a dog can create a helpful balance in supporting literacy activities that may seem less appealing to a child, ASB and Fundación SOS Galgos decided to partner together and bring to life this enriching program. This initiative started in first grade and their students were the first to read to a small group of greyhounds on a weekly basis. As a closing event, First grade hosted a Farmer’s Market, which involved an afternoon full of fundraising activities for their parents & school staff to participate in. What a caring way to wrap up the year by saying THANK YOU to SOS Galgos for supporting our reading initiative, as well as creating awareness amongst our community on how to support the wellbeing of these wonderful rescued dogs.

A survey was sent to parents in June and there was widespread appreciation of this new communication tool, such that it has been adopted throughout the classes in the primary years.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The elementary division continues to make great strides in providing a more well-rounded, robust educational experience for students. Building upon a strong foundation in reading, writing and math, the 2017-2018 school year was focused upon enhancement of the curriculum throughout the school day.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

A group of teachers began piloting Project-Based Learning units during the 2017-2018 school year. These units brought together pieces across our curriculum and culminated in an engaging experience tied to a final project. These units included:

SCHOOL COMMUNITY As an elementary division, we came together once a month and celebrate learning and to recognize the role we all play within the school community. For example, this year, students and staff celebrated the success of our 3rd grade music students obtaining a “black belt” in Recorder Karate, shared mathematical thinking and recognizing there can be numerous ways in which we arrive at an answer, read personal narratives, and performed some of our favorite pieces from music class.

A 2nd grade project with the goal of designing a more studentfriendly classroom environment.

A 3rd grade project which explored the ideas of forces and motion through the design of carnival games/rides.

A 4th grade project that sought to answer how to help stop erosion in Collserola Park.

Our 5th grade students took their long-standing civil rights unit a step further this year, involving students from high school in their quest to shed light on our rights.

As a division, we adopted a new math curriculum in 2015-2016. Our goal this year was to enhance the program with additional time spent with problem solving and rich math tasks. These tasks were developed to provide students with real life applications of math and encouraged collaboration and discussion, bringing about engagement, curiosity and creativity in math.

Throughout the year, students had bi-weekly lessons with our school’s Counselor focused on Social-Emotional Development. Grounded in the research-based Second Step Curriculum, students examined how to regulate their emotions, navigate relationships with peers, and solve problems. All students participated in a unit designed to encourage a bully-free school community.

Finally, our division student council announced in June that they raised over 1500 euros for St. Joan de Deu Children’s Hospital over the course of the school year. As a result of their organization of bake sales and other fundraisers, 3rd through 5th grade student council members were able to hand-deliver a check to the hospital staff to help children and families in need.

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

In response to the school’s accreditation process, which identified math and science as two academic objectives, the middle school significantly increased the instructional time devoted to these subjects by twenty hours each. In addition, we reduced math class sizes and added a second high level math class in 8th grade. The science department was allocated extra funds to purchase new supplies and equipment as we aligned our curriculum to the Next Generation Science Standards and in anticipation of moving into new science labs. For the first time, we sent students to math competitions, one in Amsterdam and the other in Stockholm. We also had eighty seven students participate in a series of mathematics contests created and administered by the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Additionally, middle school added a Catalan Language Learning class so that students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the catalan culture and language. choir, Madrid for Model United Nations and France for a cheerleading competition.

With the creation of the six day master schedule, we were able to shift our staffing so that the vast majority of our teachers are soley middle school teachers and not split with other divisions. This change, coupled with all of our teachers being trained in Positive Discipline and doubling the number of advisory teachers from nine to eighteen, created a deeper sense of a middle school community that is extra sensitive and responsive to the needs of adolescents.

Finally, we had a record number of middle schoolers involved in ASB sports teams this year.

Our student support team added a dedicated middle school learning support teacher and counselor to provide wrap around support for struggling learners.

We offered new Lynx Enrichment options in art, strength/conditioning, entrepreneurship, yoga and music. Students participated in a local Lego Robotics competition, while others traveled to Lisbon for MAIS

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

The High School experienced a lot of growth with curricular changes in many areas. The IB Diploma Program (IBDP) added 3 new classes that expanded our program to incorporate a wider range of curriculum to meet our diverse student needs; Computer Science, Music and Global Politics.

The Math department also piloted the new CPM math curriculum in 9th and 10th grades. As the whole school adopted a 6-day schedule, the High School was able to design and move the LYNX program into the 45 minute period, which brought in additional support to students. During the LYNX periods, students received enrichment opportunities, support classes for executive functions, writing and math, along with 1:1 sessions with teachers for specific needs. The LYNX period was also used to begin the development of a coordinated advisement program for 9th and 10th grade.

The High School community was strengthened with the addition of a second counselor, to support both university and emotional counseling, and a dedicated learning support/ELL teacher. Both these positions gave our student body more resources to help build a stronger, healthier community. Throughout the year the community spirit expanded with the increase in sports options, community service opportunities and the production of the “Hairspray� musical.

Two new programs that had significant impact on our community were the 9th grade Camino de Santiago trip and the 11th grade IB economics trip to Botswana.

The Camino trip had about 50 students and 8 teachers share the experience of 3 days on the Camino, with all the trials and tribulations of motivating each other and working towards the challenge of each daily goal.

The Botswana trip gave our students a real-life look at the broad range of economic issues that exist in Botswana from sustainable development to refugee education.The trip culminated in developing a firm relationship with the local refugee camp and ASB students working to support entrepreneurial development within the refugee community.

Our Model United Nations program had another stellar year celebrating the 5th annual BCNMUN conference with over 450 students participating. There was also a new addition to the program options with 25 students traveling to China to attend the HMUN conference in Beijing.

A significant effort was made by our IB teachers to complete our second 5 year IBDP review. The effort culminated in a comprehensive report from the IBO validating the strength of our IB program, highlighting the rigorous level of our teaching practices and the breadth of our student support systems. The report also gave us commendations on the strength of our CAS program and the degree to which students are involved in their community.

THE ARTS VISUAL ARTS The visual arts are an integral part of everyday life, permeating all levels of human creativity, expression, communication and understanding.

Around the World in 60 Minutes

Meet the Artist

In February, the fourth grade students held a special event in the ASB library entitled "Around the World in 60 Minutes". Parents were also invited to learn how to make an art project and also participated in songs and games from different countries around the world.

Some of the art projects included sugar skulls, paper weaving, metal tooling, batik and zentangle. Students were proud to share what they learned in both music and art class and the parents were happy to have an opportunity to learn from their own children!

The fifth grade students worked to prepare the Meet the Artist event that was an interdisciplinary lesson involving Language Arts, Visual Arts and Technology.

Each student is working to create a piece of artwork related to a particular artist. On the days of the event, the students shared the finished piece of artwork and a presentation on the artist they had researched.

IB Visual Arts Exhibition The IB Visual Arts Exhibition encouraged students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries. The exhibition showcases the two years work in which students develop technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers.

IBVA students shared projects and ideas with students at the Leysin American School in Switzerland. As part of their unit about Social Activism through Art, they visited the United Nations and the Red Cross Museum in Geneva. They also worked with the students in Leysin, painting pebbles for the RefugArt project, to bring awareness about the refugee crisis in our world.

PERFORMING ARTS ASB decided to improve and expand on the performing arts opportunities offered to students by announcing the hiring of a new Performing Arts Director, who will start in 2018-19. In the meantime, a group of dedicated music teachers, external collaborators and a talented director organized an impressive Peter Pan performance.

In May, the performing arts department together with a group of middle and high school students presented Hairspray, another amazing and successful musical.

MS Lynx MAIS Choir Right before spring break, fifteen of our students traveled to Lisbon to participate in the 2018 Middle School MAIS Honor Choir. All of the students attended a gala dinner and dance, and it was wonderful to see our students meet people from other schools and enjoy their time together.

ATHLETICS In 2017-2018 our ASB sports program soared to new heights with an increase in the participation of students on our competitive teams. 43% of our high school students played on one of our sports teams. ASB is now part of three competitive leagues (BISA, IBERIA and ESC). Our middle school and high school teams took part in 36 tournaments throughout the year. Overall in 2017-2018, our middle school and high school teams played in 250 games.

JUNIOR VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

ASB's NESDA (New European Speech, Debate and Acting Association) participated in a tournament in Berlin. Team Barcelona has established itself as one of the teams to beat at these bi-annual tournaments that celebrate creativity, critical thinking and style in the communicative arts.

Of the 10 team members, 9 placed in the top 12 out of over 80 competitors, performing in the advanced rounds, several winning medals in the final round (top 6).

A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY SERVICE AND SERVICE LEARNING

Rotakids: The group prepared sandwiches and delivered

Community Service and Service Learning continued to play an integral part in our school community. Service initiatives contributing to the well-being of the local and global communities spread throughout the divisions, allowing everyone from ECC to high school to get involved. Some of this year’s highlights include:

Collserola environmental program: All elementary

RefugArt: This year’s schoolwide solidarity event garnered almost 100% participation from the student body. The theme was Eye-to-Eye and we partnered with Natura and local artists, raising over 25,000€.

Peru Medical Mission: For the third year in a row our students went on a medical mission to Iquitos, Peru, where our students acted as medical translators for volunteer doctors from Michigan State University. Our high school girls also collaborated with the NGO, Days for Girls, and led educational workshops for adolescents, in addition to delivering emergency female kits.

Sharing to Learn: ASB students volunteered as Language Assistants in local public schools, working with the English teachers on language activities in the classroom, allowing kids from the local community to have contact with native English speakers.

Bridging through Art: A group of high school

students participated in environmental activities that helped with the maintenance and preservation of the Collserola Park.

Let’s Vet with Carpentry School and Cooking and Graphic design schools in Cornella: ASB started a partnership with the Department of Education and Vocational Studies in Barcelona. Students attended different vocational schools in Cornella to participate in the class in English, giving the local students the opportunity to work and interact with native English speakers, while at the same time sharing their skills in carpentry, cooking, and graphic design.

Elders Program: High school students worked with the Residencia Orpea on a weekly basis, playing games and offering company to the elderly. Some of the elders even taught the ASB students to sew.

Toy Drive: The 5th grade organized a Toy Drive, bringing in over 250 toys to donate to children in need in Esplugues.

Clean, Camp, Climb: The 11th graders went to L’Estartit to participate in the annual beach clean up.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Professional Development at ASB continued to focus on offering the best professional development for ASB staff to ensure that students are receiving the most effective instruction.

ASB believes in a shared leadership model and has developed a teacher leadership program, building on the expertise of a skilled staff of teachers. Teacher leaders participated in professional development and met regularly throughout the year.

In 2017-2018, a number of consultants were brought in to work with our staff. This included Mary Ehrenworth, Deputy Director of Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, for a reading and writing workshop, Ron LaLonde for standards-based grading and reporting, and Steve Barkley for teacher leadership.

Over the summer, many ASB teachers attended professional development sessions in Washington D.C., New York and Colorado focused on math, science and social studies instruction. In addition to external consultants and professional learning opportunities, ASB offered a variety of ongoing, job embedded professional development.

In 2017, we launched the American International Schools in Spain consortium of professional learning to offer high level professional development to teachers in a teacher cohort model.

ASB also offered a “PD Tuesday� program where teachers could opt to stay after school to work on developing curriculum and other strategic initiatives such as project-based learning.

This occurred through instructional coaching for teachers, particularly in literacy, math, and technology, as well as weekly professional learning communities (PLCs) facilitated by teacher leaders.

These cohorts brought together teachers from ASB, as well as other schools in Barcelona and Madrid, for six days of professional learning with a consultant over a year. There

ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTER (ELC) The ASB English Language Center offers English language classes to non-ASB students ages 3 to 16 on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from October to May; and a four-week intensive course in July. Local demand for the ASB English Language Center programs was very strong in 2017-2018, with a total of 545 students enrolled.

In 2017-2018, all weekday and Saturday ELC classes were held in the Elementary Building, which provided access for teachers to integrate technology into their language instruction using iPads and laptops.

Language-level testing for students ages 7 and older was held on the first day of classes to evaluate listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency in English.

In the Summer program, Early Childhood and Elementary students attended sessions with a professional storyteller in the schoo l library, and classes were held for elementary and secondary students in Radio Broadcast, Art, Swimming, Computers and Sports. Afternoon enrichment classes included Drama, Dance, Music, Art, Video Art, Cooking and Lego Robotics.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION Our Parents Association and the Committees have been working hard all year to ensure rich and plentiful opportunities for our community to become engaged in different events and activities like International Day, Halloween, Teacher Appreciation Day and Winter Bazaar and Flea Market.

The Welcoming Committee also organized a number of social outings, workshops and fun events for new and existing families in which parents can make connections easier. The Parents Association also developed the organization of Parent Ambassadors who help new families adapt in a specific neighborhood.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM In the spring of 2016, ASB began Building Together, a new and exciting initiative whose overall objective is to engage the community to improve the educational environment and programs for students. Parents were actively involved in increasing community engagement beyond our expectations by raising over 150,000 euros for our new auditorium and arts programs in only 15 months. As part of this effort, we had nearly two hundred families attend our Soiree events celebrated in spring 2016 and spring 2017, with many other families and friends of ASB contributing with donations for the auctions.

ASB MEMBERSHIPS We cooperate throughout the year with different associations and support each other’s projects. ABS wishes to maintain a close relationship with international and local non profit institutions and associations that operate in Barcelona to increase networking and provide support for our families.

The Barcelona Women’s Network is a nonprofit, non-religious, and non-political social and charitable organization offering support and friendship to both local and international women residing in the greater Barcelona area.

BWN activities cover a wide array of interests including social, cultural, charity and well-being.

These events are scheduled weekly, monthly or at special times of the year.

Barcelona Global is a private, independent and non-profit association, that is set up as a citizen’s platform of ideas and action, made up by people and companies who care about Barcelona and its future. The association’s mission is: to actively contribute to making Barcelona one of the most attractive cities in the world to attract and develop talent and economic activity.

IESE is ranked among the top 3 best business schools in the world. Our Elementary students collaborated with IESE MBA students producing decorated spoons whose proceeds went to Mary’s Meal, an organization that aims to provide children in poverty with at least one meal a day.

The American Society of Barcelona functions as a non-political and non-profit organization and strives to be the focal point for people who are interested in developing and maintaining business and social relationships in an international environment.

The Barcelona International Schools Association (BISA) is a professional organization that strives to improve the quality of education in its member schools through several venues. It promotes the sharing of resources, professional development, and communication and interchange; the organization also attempts to create international understanding in Barcelona and beyond. BISA serves as a liaison between its member schools, local governments, and pertinent local and international education organizations.

The Mediterranean Association of International Schools is a professional organization that strives to improve the quality of education in its Member schools. It promotes the professional development of Faculty, Administrators, and School Board Members, affects communication and interchange, and creates international understanding. MAIS serves as a liaison between its 40 Member Schools, 41 Associate Member organizations as well as other regional, professional, and in-service organizations. Presently, MAIS is composed of schools from 15 different countries.

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. ASB Interact Club is sponsored by Rotary Barcelona ‘92 club, which provides support and guidance. Our 10th Grade Interactor students will develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of: • Developing leadership skills and personal integrity • Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others • Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work • Advancing international understanding and goodwill
