MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL DIRECTOR We started the 19-20 year full of promise with the completion of the high school renovation project, a new innovative maker space, the school´s largest enrollment, and a stellar Senior Class of 2020.

The school´s virtual platforms were prepared and the school was able to meet with community members before the local government shut down all schools on March 13th and put all community members in a strict home lockdown.

The school maintained its strategic focus on math, science, project based learning, athletics, and the performing arts.

In the first semester, the school hummed with its rigorous academic program and over half the students involved in either after school sports programs, musicals, and individual instrument lessons.

Our core values of student centered, care, innovation, and resilience shined as our campus home vanished during these months. Our faculty learned and

The level of participation also soared during community events as we had a full capacity crowd for a basketball tournament and sold out musicals with over 900 community members supporting our budding actors and actresses.

The bustling campus and frenetic movement on campus quickly changed after our February break. The Coronavirus had just begun enveloping Northern Italy and it was fairly clear the travel connection between that Italian region and Barcelona would lead to the spread of the virus. In response, our leadership organized a virtual learning plan, professional development sessions for faculty, and information sessions for parents as well as ipad distribution.

experimented with on-line lesson planning, collaborating, and virtual lessons so that our students could be engaged in the curriculum. Our community overcame the anxiety of the virus, the lockdown, and isolation to form ongoing community meetings, online evening storytime, and even a virtual musical play. In addition to these challenges, this was a very stressful time for families who struggled with businesses closing or operations being limited, working online from home while supporting their children´s virtual education.

Fortunately, the year ended with the Class of 2020 graduating on our field with social distancing measures and family members.

We are proud despite all of the academic challenges, this class scored the highest of any ASB class with a 36 point average on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. This score placed ASB among the highest in international schools in Europe.

As a result, the vast majority or our students were accepted to universities of their choice. In addition, ASB was able to end the school year with a 2 week June program for our younger students with social distancing and safety measures.

We are incredibly grateful to our staff and faculty who supported students and families through this unprecedented year.

The Board and Leadership Team invested in our 5 MSA objectives with resources to help the school reach its vision: The Middle States Association (MSA) re-accreditation process helped our community define developmental objectives that will improve our students’ achievement and community experience. The resulting action plans helped define parameters for the budgets for this year and future school years. These objectives are now the foundation of our strategic plan.

ASB HISTORY

During the 1988-89 school year, we said goodbye to the Spanish national system classes. From that time on all students would study the American High School program, with a series of obligatory subjects for the students who wished to study in Spanish universities.

October 2, 1962 Was the first day of the history of the American School of Barcelona.

In 1977, ASB was given a large sum to leave the rented building in Pedralbes. With this money the school bought the land for the new building in Esplugues de Llobregat.

1960s The idea to open the first and only school to provide an education in English belonged to Dr. Jose Maria Poal. Upon returning to Barcelona from US Dr. Poal was inspired to provide his children with an American education leading him to found the first American School in Barcelona.

In 1986, the Ministry of Education recognized ASB as a “foreign school� (centro extranjero).

In 1995, the Generalitat of Catalunya recognized the parity of the North American educational system with the Spanish system.

1990s

During the 1970s, Spain went from dictatorship to democracy, enjoying the new liberty achieved, which ASB had been enjoying for over a decade. By the end of the 1970s, ASB had 400 students, about 300 in Esplugues and over 100 in la Font del Lleo.

The 1980s brought the reunification of all the students to the Esplugues campus.

The 1990s brought increased enrollment, better facilities, and official recognition for the quality of education that ASB provided. In the spring of 1990, ASB was accredited by the Middle States Association in the United States.

In 2014, a celebratory event was held to inaugurate the new ECC and Elementary building and the new library.

US Ambassador James Costos was a special guest at the event.

During the 2000s, ASB continued working on self improvement and was

rewarded in 2001 when the Middle States Association re-accredited ASB, recognizing its academic excellence and standards. The alumni reunions, celebrations and goodbye parties for teachers have been an opportunity for many to touch base with their old classmates and teachers.

January 2018, the school completed the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) re-accreditation process and met all MSA standards.

In 2007, ASB was the first school to start the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in English in Barcelona.

ASB bought the land bordering our facilities and created an outdoor recreation space of about 3,100 square meters. The construction started in August 2017 and includes an outdoor amphitheater, artificial grass field, hard court play space, and gardens. In

In 2016, ASB launched a development program called Building Together to help unite the community and start an inclusive culture of giving.

October 19th was a momentous day in ASB´s history: the inauguration of our new Middle School and auditorium-gymnasium. Over 400 community members celebrated this special event and got to see first-hand how the space brought everyone together and allowed us to spotlight our tremendous student talent. This new facility is a sign of our quest for ongoing improvement and just the starting point of where we would like to go as a school.

In March, 2020, ASB, like all schools in Spain, was forced to close our campus in order to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Overnight, teachers and students of all ages had to adapt to a curriculum delivered 100% online. Thankfully, ASB was prepared for the challenge. We were fortunate that many of the learning tools that we depended on for delivering our curriculum, such as Google Classroom, Seesaw, ManageBac, and others, were already widely used by our students, and accessible to parents.

STANDARDIZED TESTS International Schools Assessment (ISA) The ISA tests are designed specifically for students in international schools around the globe and it assesses mathematical literacy, reading, and writing. ASB students in grades 3 through 9 take the tests every winter.

In reading and writing, ASB continues to outperform our peer group at other international schools in Europe, as well as the average of all international schools in the cohort. In math, we are above the averages in most grades.

UNIVERSITY ACCEPTANCE

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) The MAP tests are standardized assessments designed to measure growth in student learning in reading and math.

Students in grades 3 through 10 are tested each spring to help teachers plan instructional programs and measure student growth. ASB is significantly outperforming other international schools in both reading and math in most grade levels.

COVID-19 /CORONAVIRUS CHALLENGING ASB RESILIENCE While the year began with the traditional ASB spirit, energy and dynamic environment, the March 2020 coronavirus pandemic sent everyone home for 3 months of lockdown.

Our teachers quickly adapted to creating virtual schools for students and were creative and innovative in developing new technology skills. The school packed up iPads and shipped them home to 116 primary school students so they could connect to their teachers for virtual learning.

Google Meet sessions became the norm with teachers and students, in staff meetings and in our many parent chats.

Our community continued to find creative ways to demonstrate student learning, stay fit and interact with one another.

As the lockdown eased, our operation team prepared the school and the procedural protocols to allow for endof-year visits to the school for all students and teachers.

Our last day even hosted the 12th grade graduation as an outdoor event with parents and students socially distanced, including live streaming on the internet.

The ASB spirit again came forward as we were able to organize teachers and over 180, pk3 to 3rd grade students to participate in a 3 week on-campus summer reenforcement program. It was amazing to see the happy faces of everyone as they came out of their houses and returned to campus.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT Learning a second language has its benefits too.

We have been observing for many years how our Kindergarten students benefit from learning Spanish especially helping their Reading fluency, transferring understanding from English to Spanish, concentration development and social growth. With such positive results, ECC decided to add Spanish language to our preschool curricular program wanting our youngest students to benefit from what research states when acquiring another language. Besides boosting memory, problem solving, critical thinking, improving attention skills, and grasp literacy skills faster, Spanish enhances our PK student’s social emotional development.

School adjustment is faster for those overseas children, as they learn to communicate with peers when playing and exploring together. Let’s not forget our native Spanish speakers. They too are developing strong language skills in their first language. This will allow them to easily learn a second and even third language!

PK Spanish has opened its doors to other divisions within our school as students from elementary and middle school are invited to read and perform in Spanish to small groups of children. Our overseas children also feel more confident of themselves when on field trips understand basic explanations usually given in Spanish regarding the activity. Spanish also helps those ECC students who attend our program’s swimming classes in a local pool. Children are able to grasp basic instructions feeling at ease and better understood when communicating with their swimming monitors.

Last but not least, learning Spanish also connects with the Spanish-local culture as they build tolerance starting at a young age.

SHARING OUR CULTURAL DIVERSITY ASB is known for its rich cultural diversity. Having such an International community allows students to understand and connect with the many cultural and ethnic backgrounds families bring to our community.

Preschool cultivates these important values through the many themes and events embedded in their programs.

This year our youngest learners invited their families to explain how they celebrate special holidays.

Our school becomes an ideal environment for ECC students to engage and grow in. Much exposure and learning happens as they observe and begin to understand how people can do things in many different ways.

As parents presented their holiday traditions, our preschool students were exposed to light, music, art, storytelling, poems and dance. All these elements are found in all cultures. The beauty was to be able to identify and talk about the similarities and differences.

In early years we believe in educating the whole child making special emphasis on their social-emotional development. In ECC the Second Step program teaches children important skills for getting along with others. Our students learn to be tolerant and openminded. We also foster a sense of empathy making all school stakeholders respect different religious beliefs, viewpoints, tastes, customs and cultures.

ECC students learned about Japan’s New Year traditions, Santa Lucia- Sweden, Sinterklaas-Belgium, Chinese New Year, Kazakhstan Hop the Fire/light Story and Caga Tió-Cataluña. Families brought with them typical food, songs, wore traditional clothing and played games. Our youngest students had the opportunity to participate and experience their classmates’ cultural celebrations thus beginning to appreciate and respect the diverse environment we all live in. Our school’s cultural diversity prepares our students for citizenship.

ECC GOES VIRTUAL On March 13, 2020 ASB went to Lockdown mode.

Confinement was a huge challenge for ECC staff, students and families. Teachers had many questions regarding connection, continued bonding with students/families, group sessions and the social emotional growth of their students. The biggest question was on How do we move ECC online? Such a tough question when so much of early years is about hands-on learning, exploration and play.

The first few weeks were a challenge. Planning lesson plans was problematic, understanding and using appropriate tech platforms was intense as well as listening and being mindful of ECC families as they “taught” their children, our students, was many times frustrating and overwhelming.

As weeks went by plans became more engaging, LIVE sessions were more popular than recorded videos & children enjoyed staying connected with their peers and teachers.

We learned so many tech tricks!

Covid has allowed us to see and understand technology from a very different perspective.

Tech engagement was a must if you wanted to keep up with the latest tech trends.

Some takeaways from this virtual experience: Live meetings were a success, don’t expect everyone to participate, flexible lesson plans were vital for families, frequent parent check-ins supported many families, team collaboration promoted resilience amongst staff and virtual tasks were dynamic & easy to follow allowing for bonding to happen & stay connected.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

For example, our Learning Support Department now has 3 staff members who are certified to teach students with literacy-based disabilities through the Orton-Gillingham Approach. This is a systematic multi-sensory approach that has been proven to meet the needs of struggling readers. Our Learning Support Staff is now equipped to provide this necessary intervention to our students in need and evidence has shown that their work has been paying off.

We’ve also made great progress towards our goal of increased project-based learning experiences. With support from staff at High Tech High, a world-renowned school in California known for its work with ProjectBased Learning, our teachers are better equipped to develop and refine their cross-curricular units. Students are engaged in units that bring real-world problems to their classrooms with final projects being the product of weeks of inquiry and deep learning.

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The highlight of our week was a result of the great work our Technology Ambassadors. Every Monday, our week would start with Monday Morning Announcements, which served as a weekly message to our school community.

We are incredibly lucky to be a part of a learning community that continues to learn and grow, incorporating researched-based best practices. Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, we had a number of staff members gain new knowledge and skills to directly apply to their work here with our students.

Students in 2nd through 5th grade were engaged in short segments highlighting school initiatives, birthdays, language/grammar tips and more. “Special guests” had the opportunity to to “call in” with shoutouts to groups of students.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT The 2019-2020 school year in the middle school opened with continued and strategic professional development collaboration with Dr. Mary Erhenworth from Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Columbia, and internationally renowned science consultant Paul Andersen.

In our work with them we continued to explore ways to make all of our educational programs more dynamic and robust. These collaborations continued into confinement and virtual school when ASB middle school teachers hosted labsite classes with Dr. Ehrenworth and Mr. Andersen.

Additionally, despite the confinement, students still had opportunities to participate in a range of activities that support our strategic goals from continuing to participate in international math competitions to composing music individually and collaboratively using digital tools.

These classes were opened to many teachers from all around the world to come together in our ASB virtual classrooms to study best practice and learn as much together as quickly as possible during pandemic schooling.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY We started the school year strong when, during our annual fall team building day, we decided to layer in a pep rally and layer in some friendly competition, asking homeroom classes to come up with a collaborative school cheer that embodied not only ASB’s core values but also our newly adopted MS motto:

During that same day, students also worked together to complete our first ever middle school mural, on which each MS community is pictured.

In March, when the pandemic sent us home, we continued to bring our students together to focus on more than just academics via Advisory classes and activities and our Student Leadership Council. In these times and spaces we were able to round out the year with students having final virtual yearbook signing parties, the 8th grade graduation ceremony, and one last fundraiser, partnering with local organization, Esplai L'Esquitx, to help build out resources for their pandemic summer program for local youth.

We are proud of the way we rallied together as a community and managed to accomplish so much that aligned to our core values of being innovative, upholding rigorous standards, maintaining a student-centered program and especially, leaning into being caring and nurturing resilience during the 2019-2020 school year despite the obstacles the pandemic imposed.

We continued to develop our MS Lynx Enrichment and Elective program building out offerings more aligned with our strategic initiatives. In one visual arts offering, students partnered with the organization Artistlove to use a Design Thinking process to create a permanent art installation that represented the heart of our school, our city, and the larger international community we bring together at ASB on a day to day basis. While the class was composed of MS students from grades 6-8, hundreds of community members came out to actually participate and help paint the mural on a beautiful weekend day in November.

HIGH SCHOOL

ASB students engaged in expanded and diverse programming in theater, sports and academics. Shows of Aladdin sold out in the fall, and students enjoyed travels to Belgium for NESDA competition debates, to NYC and the Hague for Model United Nations, and throughout Europe for various sport competitions.

In March, with the arrival of the pandemic, ASB High School teachers seamlessly and effectively transitioned to virtual learning with students for the remainder of the year. Unexpected and very innovative professional development emerged as teachers shared best practices and new learning deliveries in an online setting. Parents and students were overwhelmingly pleased with virtual schools giving an 80+% rating in all areas.

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT The High School continued to experience robust development in both facilities and programming through March prior to the pandemic.

Upgrades were completed in the main building with renovated glassed classrooms on all floors, the addition of a student IB Lounge area and the creation of a centralized high school office area.

Our graduating class of seniors were well positioned for a strong performance in the IB program. Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic, final assessments were canceled and students’ performance up to March weighed heavily in their final scores. ASB saw its highest student average score at 36. 18% of our seniors scored 40 or above, qualifying them in the top 5% of IBDP students worldwide with a high score at 44 and two additional scores of 43.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY The High School Community saw the expansion of our student services with the addition of a Student Support Coordinator 9-12 who also serves as the learning support specialist in grades 11-12. This person has particular experience and skills in working with the IB organization to ensure all students’ needs are accommodated throughout the program and in the final testing. Assessment criteria for accommodations and documentation to ensure these were completed for all qualifying students.

Prior to the pandemic, ASB high school teachers engaged in a variety of rich opportunities in professional development in 2019-2020. PD offerings included IB program training updates, training in Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with expert Paul Andersen, and training offerings of job-alike teacher cohorts in language learning, technology, inclusion, and diverse learner needs to name a few.

ASB High school was thrilled to finish the school year with an in-person graduation ceremony for our seniors.

This event was live streamed for families abroad and was a meaningful and touching way to celebrate and bring closure to an outstanding group of young adults entering into the next stages of their lives.

After March, professional development focused on educational best practices in delivering online learning.

Using feedback loops from students and parents, ASB teachers expanded delivery of live lessons, varying

these to include individual, small group and whole class meetings. Tools such as Kahoot, Jamboard, EdPuzzle were integrated into lessons for engagement and new ways of assessing using Classmarker proved successful.

All in all, we are extremely proud of how our community came together in this time and so thankful for the collaboration with our families, as well as their care and support.

NESDA ASB enjoyed another successful year as a member of NESDA (New European Speech, Debate and Acting Association).

NESDA is a competitive international league consisting of 11 member schools which host two tournaments a year in which students compete in the “communicative arts” of speaking, debating and acting.

THE ARTS ASB’s “NESDA program” also continued to evolve and grow. Duet actors participated in a city-wide BISA acting exhibition at the Oak House School for the first time. NESDA as a Lynx option continued to run in middle school. Meanwhile, the NESDA related elective debate program in the 9-10 years continues to grow in size and quality.

Our Middle School Art department and students designed the Project and our ASB Community painted the amphitheatre in collaboration with “Artist love”.

In December 2019, the ASB NESDA team travelled to Brussels where 11 of 12 students broke into the advanced rounds of the competition. ASB students made the finals in four of five events, several of them winning medals.

“Around the World in 60 minutes” Our 4th graders invited their parents to Around the world in 60 minutes, an engaging interdisciplinary event that combines visual arts and music.

Parents learned how to decorate sugar skulls, weave papers, paint zentangles, and create necklaces with colorful beads.

Additionally, several international schools had accepted our invitation to our second annual ASB invitational public speaking tournament, but unfortunately, the pandemic interrupted those plans. Hopefully that newly started ASB annual tradition will resume next year.

ART IN COVID TIME Our students from Elementary, Middle School and High School collaborated to create wonderful and creative artworks during the lockdown. This new situation in which they had so much more free time provided the students an opportunity to explore new kinds of art making. Led by Ms. Lynda, Ms. Samantha and Ms. Ana the students expressed their thoughts, fears, imagination or simply inspiration and produced beautiful artistry. Our 5th grade students couldn’t showcase their artworks at school to celebrate “Meet the Artist” but they designed a beautiful website and created a unique piece of art that was inspired by their artist and the movement their artist was involved in. Unfortunately this year Ms. Ana and her IB Art students could not celebrate the “IB Art Exhibition” but the students worked independently on different personal projects.

PERFORMING ARTS 2019-20 was a year of big developments in the Performing Arts. We welcomed on board an extra teacher and the program blossomed in all divisions.

We developed both curricular and extra-curricular programs and introduced more drama, dance and music options, alongside building our current programs. New developments were; practice rooms, ASB drumming band, ES choir, HS choir, Grade 4 instrument program, ES Musical Theater and instrument lessons.

GRADE 4 BAND / ORCHESTRA PROGRAM Grade 4 were the first students to experience this new program, where students were split into either an Orchestra (strings) or Band (wind) class. Students were taught how to play their chosen instrument (Violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet or alto saxophone), how to read music and how to develop their musical skills as part of an ensemble. Instruments were purchased through a special grant from ASB’s donation funds and then rented to students for a cost effective price. Ms Jennifer led the band program and Mr Kevin led the orchestra program. These classes continued through virtual school through live sessions, help videos and google classroom. We look forward to rolling this program into Grade 5 next year.

CONCERTS

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER

Live performances are at the heart of any Performing Arts program and Semester 1 was certainly packed with performances. In ECC, students performed in their Halloween show and presented “Snowman at Sunset”. Grade 1 and 2 performed “Eddie the Penguin Saves the Day”.

ES/MS/HS all performed in a three hour long musical program at the Winter Bazaar. Grades 3-5 shared their talents in the annual Talent Show. MS and HS students participated in our annual MS/HS Winter Concert and Grade 11 and 12 shared their IB Music work in a special concert. HS Open Mic night was again fantastic and the performances were awesome.

The Wizard of Oz In December our newly formed ES Musical Theater group took us on a magical journey to the land of Oz. Audiences were wowed by a spectacular performance including confident acting, singing and dancing from our students in Grades 3-5. Parent volunteers helped with many backstage and front of house areas and the costumes, hair and make up were simply stunning.

Semester 2 brought virtual performances, with both staff and students performing at a weekly HS virtual open mic.

Grade 5 and Grade 8 students performed virtually in their respective Step up and Promotion ceremonies at the end of the year.

Spotlight Productions A Whole New World - A Tribute to Aladdin In February, the Spotlight team brought us their third Musical.

This time, we were taken on a magical carpet ride to the Arabian city of Agrabah. This was our biggest show to date and over 50 students from MS and HS were involved in the cast and crew of this production. As with all our productions, we had a team of parent volunteers who supported backstage and front of house. We hired seven professional musicians and worked alongside a professional sound and lights company. The production was amazing and 1200 people came to see the show over three performances.

Virtual Annie In Semester 2 we started rehearsing for a stage production of Annie.

In March, once lockdown started, we took a decision to try and continue this through virtual school. Little did we know the huge task we had in front of us! Doing a musical on the stage is difficult, running one through virtual learning platforms is even more difficult! As we embarked on our first “Virtual Musical” we received much praise from the parents of our students and worked many hours on developing the students singing, dancing and acting skills. Parents remotely helped with the performances and assisted with costumes, make up and being a “personal assistant” to the students to ensure we could film over an intensive week. As teachers, we learnt a range of new skills and quickly learnt how to video edit. We are extremely proud of the students, teachers and parents involved in this project.

CHOIRS

Instrument lessons

Ms Jennifer developed our choir programs with the introduction of a HS choir and ES choir. This means we now have choirs in three divisions at ASB. We started off the year with an invitation to participate in “Barcelona International Community Day” at Barcelona’s Maritime Museum in October. ASB worked alongside other BISA schools and organised a choir made up of the different schools. Ms Jennifer organized the pieces and rehearsals and accompanied the choir on piano. Mr Kevin Hebden presented the music at the event and conducted the choir.

In Semester 2, we started a new system of instrument lessons at ASB, following a “pull-out” system. Thirty two students participated in this new optional program. Four part-time instrument teachers were recruited and three full equipped soundproof practice rooms were built. Instruments offered were; piano, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, violin, trumpet, saxophone and drum kit. As we moved into virtual school, we continued the lessons using video conferencing. Students shared their progress through a Virtual Instrument Concert.

Our new HS choir built up their repertoire and performed in the Winter Concert and Winter Bazaar.

We also took students to participate in the Iberia Music Festival hosted at the American School of Madrid.

MS choir worked on the repertoire for the MAIS choir event and the AMIS MS Girls Honor choir event we were due to host in April. Unfortunately due to Covid19, these events were both cancelled. In Semester 2 ES Choir began as an after school option and students started working on their part singing skills. Despite lockdown, ES choir continued through virtual school.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASB had another successful year with its MUN (Model United Nations) delegations. ASB’s MUN program provides a series of enriching experiences for our students to debate and discuss current global issues.

This year our MUN team participated in 1 local conference: BMUN in Sant Cugat (our partnership with St. Paul’s School and Europa International School in Barcelona); 3 International Conferences: IMUN in Lisbon, Portugal (hosted by the Carlucci American International School in Lisbon), ThiMUN in The Hague, Netherlands (hosted by the ThiMUN Foundation with over 3,500 participants from over 200 schools worldwide), and NHSMUN in New York, USA (hosted by the International Model United Nations Association with over 5,000 participants from 200 schools worldwide) and due to the pandemic, our team wrapped up the year with an internal virtual MiniMUN to continue to practice and hone skills.

Our MUN team looks forward to continuing its tradition of hosting our annual BCNMUN conference next school year with 500 participants from around the globe with it’s 8th edition focusing on the theme of Global Safety: In our program each student is assigned a country, committee, and series of world problems to research and investigate in order to prepare policy statements, speeches, and resolutions in the style and format of the United Nations delegations.

Students then attend conferences to act as diplomats that embody their country’s perspective and work

with peers around the world in local, European and International settings.

Through this program students become adept at the principles of negotiation, diplomacy, and consensus, becoming proficient in research, public speaking, debate, and problem-solving.

ATHLETICS In 2019-2020 our ASB sports program experienced our highest ever participation of students in all levels of the school with 530 students taking part in year-long sports.

Our ASB sports program was represented in 20 different competitive Saturday leagues in soccer, basketball, volleyball and flag football. ASB also participated in tournaments against other International schools in BISA, IBERIA and European Sports Conference (ESC).

SOCCER TEAMS

In 2019-2020 ASB employed 35 sports coaches across the different sports for 10 months of the year. To improve the quality of our coaches ASB brought in consultants to offer professional development in two of our sports.

The pandemic lockdown from March until June cut our year long sports seasons short as some of our teams had to miss major tournaments and ASB was not able to finish the Saturday Leagues.

With money raised from basketball camp and parent donations, ASB was able to purchase a Dr. Dish basketball shooting machine. This machine was used in practices by the Middle School and High School basketball boys and girls teams.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM

BASKETBALL TEAMS

In volleyball, ASB added two new teams in order to develop our overall program.

A grade 5 and 6 team was added for girls so that volleyball is now available from grades 5 to 12 at ASB.

The ASB High School boys basketball team used the HUDL video analysis program, which allowed players and coaches to break down plays and statistics from games.

Games were videoed by a team manager, uploaded to the HUDL site and in less than 24 hours players, coaches and parents had access to statistics and the video break down features.

FLAG FOOTBALL TEAMS The ASB flag football program added a Flag Football for Fun activity which taught the basics to students in grades 1 to 3. Flag Football is now available to boys and girls from grades 1 to 12.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAM The cross country running team provided a more competitive option this year for runners who wanted to try races. ASB took part in races around Barcelona and also sent a team for the first time to Switzerland for the European Sports Conference Championship.

CHEERLEADING TEAMS In October, ASB hosted Benjamin Franklin for a boys basketball pep rally game. The ASB gymnasium was packed with fans from both schools and featured the cheerleaders and the school drummers.

A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY SERVICE AND SERVICE LEARNING ASB has continuously developed Community Service programs as well as Service Learning for our students.

In these experiential programs, learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students seek to achieve real objectives for the community and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to serve, as well as enhance their own skill set. Some highlights of this year are:

Sharing to Learn celebrated its 11th year ASB was a pioneer conceptualizing this program with the Department of Education of the Generalitat where High School students act as Language Assistants in ECC and ES classrooms of public schools in the Baix Llobregat. The program has grown over the past 10 years, involving more than 100 schools and impacting more than 25.000 students.

ASB & Asproseat Oil Recycling Project This year our senior, Izaskun de Sas continued with the project partnering with Asproseat to start a communitywide Kitchen Oil Recycling campaign. They encouraged many ASB families to participate in this unique project.

The purpose of this project was to recycle used kitchen oil and turn it into biodiesel. The oil was picked up and filtered at the Asproseat facility.

The Cerebro Project Students in ASB worked on this project of Artificial Intelligence with famous entrepreneur Pau Garcia-Milà.

Students created units of knowledge for an open-source chatbot called ZEVE (www.hellozeve.com).

San Joan de Deu Solidarity Dinner 35 students from High School acted as waiters in the Solidarity Dinner to raise funds for the Children’s Oncological Center of San Joan de Deu.

Super Buddies Program was a big success Students from HS were partnered with ECC students three times a week to participate in virtual activities in English. The HS students were in charge of preparing the activities, and the younger students really benefited from being connected to their school community during the lockdown due to the COVID19 worldwide pandemic.

Rotakids Rotakids continued to strive this year despite the Coronavirus pandemic closing down the school. With ES Rotakids we were able to meet weekly and prepare a strategy of events to support the NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos) Association. Rotakids Barcelona 92 was featured in the world international Rotary meeting, as we put together a very beautiful speech

by Mark Maloney, president of Rotary International.

MS Rotakids visited the Residencia Orpea and participated in activities with the elders.

The ASB Vistual Talent Show was organized by the Rotakids and Interacts It was our first virtual Talent Show and it brought together 1200 people, allowing us to raise 1000 euros to provide the different hospitals with masks and gloves.

The premiere of the 10th grade Sophomore Symposium was supported by our Rotakids tech team.

NPH Event Night A group of HS students organized an event where we were able to premiere the documentary of “Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos” based in Haiti.

Refugart Art All students from ECC, ES and MS created a piece of art based on skin tones for our annual REFUGART event.

Rotary Club Barcelona 92 together with Rotakids and Interacts were able to deliver 5000 pairs of gloves for elder centers in Baix Llobregat area.

Lego Event 120 ES students participated in the RE_CODE Summit, where they interacted with LEGO executives from around the world. The executives worked together with the students to build robots and they were able to see firsthand the power that Lego has on children.

Toy Drive Rotakids ES Rotakids Club hosted the Annual Toy Drive for underprivileged children in Esplugues. We were able to collect 350 toys. The ES Rotakids were the executors of all the aspects of the toy drive.

Collserola Students from 2nd to 5th grade participated in the annual environmental program we do in the area of Sant Pere Martir. The students planted trees, cleaned the picnic areas, designed signage for areas of the park, as well as cleaned the channels where the water flows.

Escola Solidaria Rotakids and Interacts participated in this event where they gave 180 new backpacks full of school supplies to underprivileged children of Nou Barris. They also prepared a snack for them and organized fun games.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 2019-2020 has been an exciting year of professional development for ASB staff members. We started off the year offering professional development and collaborations as part of the American International Schools in Spain (AISIS) organization consisting of four international schools in Spain offering the highest level of professional development for teachers. ASB was one of the founding members of this organization. Research suggests that professional learning should be ongoing and job embedded, therefore we have offered professional learning experiences for multiple days across the year led by international consultants and teacher leaders in our schools. The consultants who worked in person with our staff included:

Dr. Mary Ehrenworth Deputy Director of Columbia Teachers College Reading and Writing Project worked with teachers on effective literacy instruction.

Paul Andersen Science Consultant worked with elementary and secondary teachers to use inquiry and science phenomena to engage students in hands on instruction aligned with the Next Generation Science standards.

Dr. Lee Ann Jung CEO of Lead Inclusion worked with teachers on inclusive leadership, part one of a five part course.

Dinners that Matter Our students participated in this bimonthly event where different restaurants from Barcelona donate 25% of the income that night to a local charity in Barcelona.

ASB students worked as hosts for the restaurants and shared the mission of “Dinners that Matter� with the restaurant patrons.

As we all know, when Covid-19 hit Spain, ASB teachers had to learn a vast array of virtual tools and strategies, overnight. The ASB teaching and learning team quickly developed virtual professional development sessions, on all of our critical applications that we were using with students and on how to make virtual learning engaging, effective and fun. The team also called in leading consultants to join our virtual meetings and share insights with our teachers. ASB was able to lead professional development with our students in the virtual room to allow teachers to see strategies in action with students. The teaching and learning team learned so much about virtual professional development and our

teachers were able to grow their skills beyond what anyone could have imagined. Virtual schools was a success for ASB for so many reasons, but one of them was the level of professional development and support teachers had in the transition to virtual school.

In addition to these professional learning opportunities, we continue to offer coaching for teachers with three full time instructional coaches in literacy, math/science and technology. The Teaching and Learning department is proud to offer world class professional development for teachers, which will ultimately impact the learning experience of all ASB students.

SUMMER BASKETBALL CAMP At the end of June our basketball coaches ran a two week basketball camp for 2 hours a day. The focus of the camp was doing skill work which allowed the players to follow all Covid safety procedures. The camp was a great opportunity for ASB to demonstrate that safe physical activity was still possible during the new normal.

The ASB English Language Center offers English language classes to non-ASB students ages 3 to 16 on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from October to May and a four-week intensive course in July. Local demand for the ASB English Language Center programs was strong in 2019-2020, despite COVID restrictions, with a total of 450 students enrolled. In March 2020, Weekday and Saturday English classes transitioned to a virtual platform with ELC teachers delivering classes using a hybrid model of online classes with assignments.

Cambridge test prep courses, including PET (B1), First Certificate (B2) and Advanced (C1), completed the courses but were unable to sit for the official exams in May 2020 due to confinement restrictions.

Over 200 students enrolled in our Summer 2020 program, which ran only 3 weeks this year. Early Childhood and Elementary students attended Yoga, Art and Sports classes in the morning while Middle and High school students attended STEM and Coding classes. Afternoon enrichment classes included Circus/ Performing Arts, Music, Dance, Art, Video Art, STEM, and Coding with Tynker.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

In 2019, a new executive committee, with Tiffany Lee-Hartley as President, was inaugurated and began serving the community at the start of the school year. We kick-started the year with a successful welcome event and many neighborhoods meet ups throughout September.

The development program during 2019-20 involved a lot of planning during the first semester but the pandemic and lockdown inhibited our ability to launch a program or hold our annual Spring Party fundraiser.

The past school year also saw very active whatsapp group communications, especially in the spring when the school went into lockdown due to COVID-19. Unfortunately many events were cancelled.

Lluis Leo, a local, internationally renowned artist, who is also an ASB parent has made a significant donation of one of his sculptures to promote community service and parent involvement in the school. The sculpture was to be completed by the Spring, but Covid issues will delay the inauguration until fall 2020.

It promotes the professional development of Faculty, Administrators, and School Board Members, affects communication and interchange, and creates international understanding. MAIS serves as a liaison between its 40 Member Schools, 41 Associate Member organizations as well as other regional, professional, and in-service organizations. Presently, MAIS is composed of schools from 15 different countries.
