Limber Timber is a mass and affordable housing located at University with a floor to area ratio

The massing is broken down into two perimeter blocks at the scale of the contextual city with a gradual incline of building height towards the Mississippi river. A sun path analysis determined that housing units with additive balconies would be placed in the northeastern facades while those with subtractive balconies are placed in the south western facades.

The theme of flexibility over time is central to the project because mass timber structures require longevity in order to successfully sequester carbon. For this reason, Limber Timber includes three module types of kitchens, bathrooms, and closets. The modules are able to be moved in and out of the units in order for the building to adapt to nonresidential programs in the future.

Located in New Orleans, adjacent to the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, Solar Canopy is the arrangement of a triangular hybridized structure that focuses on improving energy, water collection, and social equity systems within the public realm.

Along with the structure, a central consideration is the reclamation of energy production, distribution and consumption within the public sector. Individuals are able to produce their own energy and either use the energy or sell it back to the grid.

The hybridized solar canopy structure can be thought of as an inverted umbrella, in that it produces energy via solar panels, collects water, and houses essential programs. Programs dispersed throughout the project include skate parks, battery storage and distribution centers, an amphitheater, public restrooms, and market stalls.

The structures collect water and drain into pools. The proposed 20’ slope allows the pools to drain into lower micro-topographies and into the canal. This eliminates the need for using water pumps, which reduces energy consumption.

The area near the canal is focused on biodiversity with the integration of ecotones. Pedestrian paths weave through pools, vegetation, and upward shifts in elevation to create a public space engaged with nature.

There are 600 solar panels on each structure. 25,000 panels total is enough to power 1,065 homes.

Cores of the structures connect to battery storage units. Power is redirected to the existing grid.

Three primary buildings are connected to the structure. A health clinic, art education center, and a child care facility all have small lobbies at ground floor and they use the stem of the structures as vertical cores.

LINA BO BARDI‘S GLASS HOUSE CASE STUDY: TIMBER TRANSLATION - São Paulo, BR - Single Family Home - Fourth Year / Spring 2021 - Collaborator: Natalie Rendleman Lina Bo Bardi’s Glass House in São Paulo embodies both traditional and contemporary modernist influences.

The front of the house features a glass prism which floats on thin steel pilotis.

The ground below this prism slopes upward, culminating in a hill which holds the traditionally styled back half of the residence. This condition inherently creates hierarchy, prioritizing the modernist approach and leaving the traditional construction, occupied by housekeepers, largely unseen.

The case study translation into mass timber involves a series of iterations that subvert the hierarchy in the original concrete and steel home. The pitched roof is replaced with one manually curved and clamped laminated veneer lumber panel and the concrete floors and walls are replaced with 5 ply CLT panels. The thin steel piloti are also replaced with 8” glulaminated columns that are angled on the ground floor to mimic the surrounding forest on the site. This move strengthens the lateral support of the building. Some concrete elements of the building remain in order to prevent the timber from touching the ground.

DISSOLVE

FRENCH QUARTER OFFICE - New Orleans, LA - Mixed-Use Office - Third Year / Spring 2020 Dissolve is a mixed-use office building in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans. This condition is translated into the project as one travels towards the center of the building.

There is a transition from solid mass at the street level to a completely open courtyard at the center of the site by “dissolving” the mass. The office program begins on the second floor and has an open design with the exception of courtyards, light wells, and atriums that compartmentalize the space. The studio constraints include ceiling heights of twelve feet which were interrupted with the integration of various double height spaces.

The façade implements balconies that are typical within the French Quarter and they create a push-pull effect that further articulates the concept of the dissolve.

RICHADSON MEMORIAL HALL PHYSICAL MODEL FABRICATION - Physical Model - Summer 2021 - Collaborator: Rebecca Dunn Richardson Memorial Hall is home to the School of Architecture on Tulane University’s campus. This Richardsonian Romanesque style building, originally used by the medical school, is currently undergoing a renovation to improve the overall quality of existing elements such as the façade, structure, and stairs. The renovation will also feature additions to the back of the building. Construction will serve as a teaching tool and pedagogical resource for students.

As a summer fabrication exercise, the existing façade of the building was built using layers of basswood, arches paper, and frosted acrylic. The roof and dormers were built out of basswood and gray museum board.

TETRADIC THEATER EXPLORING SCALES OF PUBLIC SPACE - Toronto, CA - Theater and Plaza - Third Year / Fall 2019 The Tetradic Theater is adjacent to a proposed transit hub in the Riverside neighborhood of Toronto, CA. The context around the project was designed as an urban planning exercise. According to the masterplan, the plan is trapezoidal and is at the intersection of two major streets and the transit hub. This trapezoidal shape informs the façade of the building and, subsequently, the design of the plaza.

The plaza is designed according to the proposed street design in the masterplan. The trapezoid façade is translated in plan at the plaza which includes a water feature, used as a skating rink during winter, and an informal performance stage. The building itself extends into the plaza through the pavilion. Two other small pavilions are featured and the plaza is landscaped with grass and trees in a checkered pattern.

THE MODULE A MODEL FOR CULTURAL CONNECTION - Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY - Mixed-Use Housing - NOMA Competition / Summer 2019 - Collaborators: Natalie Rendleman Max Drada Lindsey Compeaux

The module embeds itself into the existing enclave of West Indian immigrants and strengthens it by bringing 80 units and retail space to Nostrand Avenue in Flatbush Brooklyn.

The units range in size and are intended to be affordable due to modular construction. Small leasable spaces on the ground floor can be used as grocery markets and restaurants that are seen in the existing fabric. The north east corner of the building along Nostrand occupies community resource offices where residents and locals can find work, educational opportunities, and mental health services.

HOUSING BLOCK - New Orleans, LA - Collective Housing - Second Year / Spring 2019

Located in New Orleans, Open and Ascend features the stacking and rotating of house types to form a collective housing complex within a single block. The ground floor ceiling has apertures for both infiltration of light and water. Collection of water in this context is imperative at this level which includes rain gardens, bioswales, and pools. The ground floor is designed with a residual sentiment in that it incorporates the square within square geometries from upper levels. Square geometries consist of changes in topography while enclosed spaces accommodate public and residential amenities.

In a morphological sense, the homes are aggregated to form various rectangular clusters that accommodate communication cores and outdoor passages. The outdoor passages, combined with an occupant’s unit, facilitate exposure to all desirable directions: the inner courtyard, street, and main access points.

Outdoor corridors, combined with circulation cores, accommodate collective spaces for all residents in the cluster. These collective spaces can range in uses from hanging gardens to celebrations.

The design of the housing clusters involves a stacking and rotating of the original Horizontal home from the housing investigation earlier in the semester. The units are shifted volumetrically to decrease the mass to void ratio on upper levels by either increasing the size of courtyards or converting them into light wells. vmancera@tulane.edu
