Course Description: This course focuses on the dominant ideas in Western cultural expressed in art, literature, music, philosophy and religion.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of ENC 1101 or its equivalent (with a grade of “C” or better).

Credit: This is a writing reinforcement course which requires a minimum of 6,000 words. Minimum grade of C required if used to satisfy this Gordon Rule requirement. Successful completion of this course will satisfy three hours required in Humanities.

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Three absences will be considered excessive and each period missed over three will result in the reduction of 40 pts. against your final point total. More than five absences may result in the instructor withdrawing (W) the student for class. If a major problem develops because of ilness, work, etc., please consult immediately with the instructor.

Tardiness: Students are expected to be on time for the start of each class. If a student enters a classroom after the class roll has been checked, that person will be recorded as absent.

Evaluation: Final grades will be determined by the following assignments worth 1000 pts.: I. Papers (3):

300 pts. (i.e. 100 pts. per paper)

II. Quizzes (10):

400 pts. (i.e. 40 pts. each)

III. Final Exam:

200 pts.

IV. Class Preparation / Class Participation: 100 pts.

I. Papers (3; 100 pts. each): Papers will be graded on following instructions, form, content and grammar. Each paper will be a minimum of 5 pages in length.

II. Quizzes (8; 400 pts.): Quizzes will occur regularly throughout the semester. Questions will be taken from your textbooks, lectures, powerpoint presentations, etc. These quizzes will be given via WEBCT. III. Final Exam (200 pts.): Your final exam will be a comprehensive exam taken from your quizzes and from your textbook, “The Greatest Generation Speaks”. This exam will be given on the last day of class (April 27)!

IV. Class Preparation / and Class Participation (100 pts):

WRITING REQUIREMENTS:  Each student will write a minimum of 6,000 words during this course.  All written work in the course must be completed in order to receive a grade for the course.  All essays must be submitted in hard copy, aw well as an electronic file to www.turnitin.com.

Before submitting an essay to www.turnitin.com, you must enroll at this site. Instructions will be given in class on how to enroll.

POLICY FOR REWRITING PAPERS: I will not accept any late papers! I will not accept any late papers! I will not accept any late papers! Papers are due and to be submitted when class begins. I do not accept any written assignements via email! Papers returned with a grade of “U” (Unacceptable) must be rewritten and returned by the next class period in order to receive a grade. A full letter grade reduction beginning with a B (85) will be applied once you rewrite your “U” paper!

Papers are to be written on the readings assigned and other out-of-class readings or distinctive material as assigned by the instructor.

Plagarism from any source or from another student will result in loss of credit, meaning a final grade for the course of “F”.

Your Confessions writing assignments will be worth 200 pts.; first as a “Class Preparation” assignment (100 pts) and then as 1 of your 3 “Paper” assignments (100 pts).

II. Quizzes (10, 400 pts.): Quizzes will occur periodically. Questions on your quizzes could be taken from assigned readings from your textbooks, outside material, lectures, etc. Also, there will be no make-up option for missed quizzes.

Classroom Expectations: I expect you to respect your classmates and your instructor, not only by the words you use but also by the attitude in which you use them! Consequently, I expect you to exemplify social maturity, motivation and academic capabilities throughout the semester!!!  Let’s have fun as a class!  No coarse or rude language will be tolerated!  Don’t fall asleep!  Don’t read the newspaper!  Don’t work on assignments for other classes!  Don’t answer your cell phone or have it turned on!  Don’t swap cell phone numbers in class!

Email: I regret to say that I can not read/open any email from you that doesn’t originate from an Atlas login account! Any emails from Yahoo, Gmail, etc. will not be read and will be automatically deleted!!!

Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accomodations must provide a letter from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the professor, preferably during the first two weeks of class. The OSD determines accomodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilites (West Campus, SSB, Rm 102, ext. 1523).

Academic Honesty: Any act of dishonesty, including but not limited to plagiarism or cheating, by a student will automatically receive a failing grade and the student will be withdrawn from the class. Refer to the college catalog and the student handbook for the college’s policy on this matter.

Withdrawal Deadline: A student may withdraw from the class anytime before the withdrawal deadline for that session. If a student withdraws any time after the deadline he/she will be assessed a WP (Withdrawn Passing) or WF (Withdrawn Failing). See student handbook for more information.
