HOA Communication Val de Vie with their families. “We have a long-term commitment to the valley,” says Venter. “We’re passionate about it and the people who live in it – within the boundaries of the estate and beyond.” Val de Vie acknowledges the value that the Pearl Valley name carries, as it has consistently been rated amongst the top five best golf courses in South Africa over the last 10 years and was named “Best Residential Estate in South Africa” in a recent New World Wealth survey. The estate will therefore not undergo a name change, nor will its residents lose their say. Instead, Pearl Valley will maintain a separate Homeowners’ Association (HOA) as is the case with other brands that fall under Val de Vie, such as the Val de Vie Lifestyle Club, Polo Village, Retirement Village and The Stables. As such, Val de Vie will oversee the management, marketing, sales and new developments on both estates, and will implement strategies to achieve economies of scale in order to reduce security, maintenance and landscaping costs. “This will, of course, stabilise levies in real terms for the individual homeowner,” continues Venter. “It is our role to minimise operational costs, to maximise sales prices and to ensure long-term sustainability.” “We’re very mindful of seeking out solutions that will benefit all residents, as far as possible.

While this growth will take place in various stages, we will never implement a phase that would be to the detriment of preceding phases. At this stage, the most important step is to establish a link between the estates. Thus, the first phase is already underway and involves the development of the land between the golf course and Val de Vie.” This link will ultimately allow residents to conveniently connect to the R45, as a bridge over the Berg River will be built in the near future. This bridge will give residents of both estates faster and easier access to excellent schools, the University of Stellenbosch and Cape Town International Airport. The construction of a road leading to the bridge is already underway. There will also be more in the way of amenities for residents to look forward to: The construction of the five-star Mantis Collection Hotel at Pearl Valley Golf Club began in March 2016. Additional facilities will eventually be added to allow for an increase in the number of polo club memberships. Furthermore, thirteen Gentleman’s Estates and four River Reserves, which are all, sold out, as well as additional developer’s plots, the aforementioned retirement village and a large conservation area will be developed. Additionally, a deli offering organic products will be introduced, keeping the focus on country-living.

On 1 March 2016, the doors to a very promising future were opened as Val de Vie Estate and a consortium of partners including the Mantis Collection officially acquired Pearl Valley from Standard Bank. The aim of this landmark residential property deal, which was approved by the Competition Commission, is to create a luxury “super-estate” under the Val de Vie brand, which will include mutual benefits for Pearl Valley and Val de Vie residents. “We’re going to place a lot of emphasis on maintaining the low-density, country-like atmosphere on the larger estate that so many buyers are looking for,” says Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director at Val de Vie Estate. “We don’t plan on reinventing the wheel at Pearl Valley in terms of our marketing efforts, but rather bringing in authentic touches that will add to our vision of becoming one of the most sought-after residential estates – not only in South Africa, but in the world.” Pearl Valley will now be one of Val de Vie’s most exclusive products. Addressing residents of Val de Vie and Pearl Valley about the future of the estate. Venter concludes, “At the end of the day, it’s about your lifestyle experience on this estate, it’s about the value of your property and the levy that you pay each month. The Foundation is a not-for-profit trust that was established by the development company in 2015 and is now ready to stand on its own feet. The founding mission of the Foundation is to strategically invest its resources to support and uplift less privileged communities within the greater Cape Winelands region, but with specific focus on the Drakenstein Valley. t is hard to believe that we are already well into 2016 and most of our New Year’s resolutions have faded with the Festive Season now behind us. Val de Vie Estate begun 2016 on a high note with property sales and prices appreciating to an all time new level. We are proud to report the successful sale of two homes, one being the biggest sale sold at the highest price in history and the other being the highest rate per square metre. The high demand for rentals as well as buyers seeking properties to purchase continues to move full speed ahead with multiple sales taking place on phase 2 of Le Dormaine as well as La Vue, which offers a mix of the larger size Developer’s stands. The Oaks Plot and Plan Development; that was recently launched on phase 2, is also attracting huge interest from buyers looking for the convenience of a desirable plot and plan development consisting of bigger homes. A Royal welcome What a privilege for Val de Vie to have hosted Prince Harry during his much-anticipated South African visit and his participation in the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup, held at Val de Vie Estate in November last year. This event – the largest one-day charity polo event in the world – has made its sixth appearance this year and is a first ever on African soil.

rince Harry teamed up with founder and CEO of Val de Vie, Martin Venter; Royal Salute ambassador, Malcolm Borwick – who scored the first goal of the match – and businessman, Adamu Atta on the ISPS Handa Sentebale team. They were up against polo enthusiast, Hannes Pickard; one of the world’s top 100 polo players and Sentebale ambassador, Nacho Figueras; commercial property developer and investor, Rupert Hackwill and trained aerospace engineer, Bill Ballhaus on the Royal Salute team. Although it was a close match, keeping the suspense heightened, it was ultimately the Royal Salute team that won the game 8 to 7, after Bill Ballhaus scored the winning goal seconds before the end of the final chukker was signaled. This skillful move earned Ballhaus the title of ‘Most Valuable Player.’ Guests in attendance included Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, businessmen Patrice Motsepe, Tokyo Sexwale and Sir Martin Sorrell; Olympic gold medalist, Cameron van der Burgh; former Proteas cricket captain, Graeme Smith; TV personality, Minnie Dlamini and UK actress, Laura Main. Sentebale was registered as a charity in 2006

and opened an office in Lesotho in 2007, initially providing grants and management advice to

grassroots organisations caring for disadvantaged children in Lesotho. To date, the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup has raised in the region of £3 million for the charity. Today, the charity has maintained partnership with these locally run organisations whilst extending its network to work directly with major international foundations and corporations, local service providers and government. Safe accommodation, hot meals and psychosocial support to those children coming to terms with living with HIV, are just some of the services that are offered by various extensive Sentebale projects making a huge difference to children’s ability to lead a more rewarding life. Cathy Ferrier of Sentebale comments: “Sentebale’s annual polo fundraising event has gone from strength to strength over six consecutive years. We are delighted to bring the Sentebale Polo Cup home to Africa this year, and would like to thank Martin Venter and the wonderful team Val de Vie Estate for all their hard work and support. The funds raised from this year’s event will allow us to deliver care and education to many more children in Lesotho and in the near future across other Southern African countries.” Every life changed and every smile gives meaning and purpose to the efforts of Sentebale

Laureus&Polo Events Media Cup 2016

Laureus Polo Cup 2016 Val de Vie was honoured to be the proud host of the first Laureus Polo Cup to be held in Africa, this past January. Laureus is a universal movement that celebrates the power of sport to bring people together as a force for good. Laureus is composed of three core elements - the Laureus World Sports Academy, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Laureus World Sports Awards, which collectively celebrate sporting excellence and use sport as the means to promote social change.

ome of South Africa’s top sporting personalities and guests enjoyed an entertaining afternoon with two polo matches and an elegant gala dinner to support the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in South Africa. The curtain raiser was an exciting match between the polo development team from Poloafrica and a team from the Val de Vie Polo Club, which was followed by the main exhibition match that presented the title sponsors, Mercedes-Benz and ISPS Handa, who competed for the Laureus Polo Cup. Poloafrica, a programme unique in Africa, has been running for ten years. It gives underprivileged adults the opportunity to participate in equestrian sporting activities including polo in a professional manner and underprivileged children the chance to learn to ride and play the game, providing they demonstrate discipline and commitment to the animal and the sport, work hard at school and at the life skills

lessons provided in the holidays. By changing the perception of polo in this country, Poloafrica also aims to make the sport more inclusive and so to encourage wealthy South African blacks to join the game. In 2011 Poloafrica gained increased credibility by being accepted as a Laureus Sport for Good Foundation project. Some of the admired sports legends that attended included; Elana Meyer, Shaun Pollock, Morné du Plessis and Ernest van Dyk. Dr Handa handed over the cheque of R50 000 to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which supports over 150 projects worldwide. Since its inception, the foundation has raised over €85 million for projects which have helped to improve the lives of millions of young people, through its global foundation and a growing network of eight subsidiary National Foundations in Argentina, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the United States. The foundation

funds projects addressing key social issues including juvenile crime, gangs, HIV/AIDS, discrimination, social exclusion, land mines awareness and health problems such as obesity. Some of the South African ambassadors who proudly carry the Laureus torch are: Sevens Rugby Player, Cecil Afrika; Springbok rugby players, Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers and Bryan Habana; former Bafana Bafana Captain, Lucas Radebe; Olympic athlete Elana Meyer; former Proteas cricket captains, Shaun Pollock and Graeme Smith as well as South African cricketing legend, Jacques Kallis. With this ambassadorial participation, sporting heroes get involved and lend support addressing social issues like HIV/Aids, poverty and violence, using sport as the tool for social change. Ryk Neethling appointed Laureus Ambassador Val de Vie’s Marketing Director and former South African swimmer and Olympic gold medalist, Ryk Neethling has been named the latest Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Ambassador joining an impressive list of sports icons who are a part of the Laureus Family. The announcement was made at the inaugural Laureus Polo Cup hosted at Val de Vie Estate in January 2016. Born in Bloemfontein, Ryk attended Grey College, where he excelled in swimming, earning a place in the South African swimming team for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta; he has since been lauded as one of the most accomplished swimmers to come out of the South African ranks. He currently holds the South African record in the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 metres freestyle events and up until August 2006 held the 4x100 metres freestyle relay world record. “It’s a massive honour for me to be named a Laureus ambassador – on par with the privilege of being an Olympian. Not every Olympic gold medalist is invited to become part of this elite organisation. It shows that you’ve achieved more than just a win but have done something significant with it, and it is my goal to use my influence for good,” explains Ryk Neethling.

Entertainment Africa chatted to celebs and VIPs on arrival about their fashionable ensembles and more. Polo fans enjoyed an exciting 12-goal polo

Team Seven Oaks won the opening match - playing for third place in the tournament - against Shimmy Beach Club, while Fifth Chukka representing Veuve Clicquot won with an amazing score of 7 – 3 against One Zone Polo representing Julius Bär in the riveting main game. Events & Media The emcees for the day, Leigh-Anne Williams and Afrika Melane, entertained and enchanted guests with their charm and wit, while the polo commentator for the day, the illustrious Matthew Pohl, kept guests glued to their seats, not a difficult task with the most riveting polo played on the Val de Vie greens to date. There is perhaps no other sport that carries the prestige and class that the Sport of Kings does. The opulent affair has grown beyond expectations over the years, attracting the cream of the crop of both local and international guests. This year’s VIP guest list included Nigerian, Ghanaian and South African celebrities such as Big Brother Africa presenter Vimbai Mutinhiri, Nigerian musician Praiz, OC Ukeje and some of South Africa’s finest celebrities such as Nomzamo Mbatha, Jeannie D, Jen Su, Bonnie Mbuli, Lee-Ann and Nicky van der Walt, Maps Maponyane, Ayanda Thabethe, Siv Ngesi, Tanya van Graan and many more. The Best Dressed competition for the day, judged by Elle magazine was another highlight in the action-packed programme of events. The best-dressed female of the day award went to the acclaimed Isibaya actress, Nomzamo Mbatha. Best-dressed couple went to Nandi Ndlovu and Buntu Ngcuka, while best dressed male went to blogger and presenter Shiraz Reddy – a difficult choice given the high level of style and sophistication displayed at this year’s event. Guests loved the bright and bold theme, inspired by Veuve Clicquot’s bright yellow label. Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director for Val de Vie Estate handed over a R100 000 cheque from Official Charity Partner, ISPS Handa, for Hope through Action in aid of sports development in the Paarl Valley area. The Fifth Chukka team took home the coveted winning trophy and the best pony of the day was Who’s That Girl, owned by the South African Polo Team Captain Tom de Bruin. After a spellbinding day of fast-paced polo, guests proceeded to the popup Shimmy Beach after party for one final toast to #VCMastersPolo.

Majozi at the Val de Vie Market Market guests covered the grass like a lovely blanket of support (with no spot to spare!) as they sang along with the modest Indie-folk musician Majozi, who ended the day off with his sincere lyrics and soothing sounds.

he Market at Val de Vie called for another spectacular day of family-fun-in-the-sun that took place on 7 February 2016. The food truck fare included vendors such as Fleet Coffee and popular favourites like Meisies Kitchen and Dos Velas, who ensured a variety of delectable alternatives and fine street cuisine for all gourmet foodie lovers! Val de Vie MCC and a selection of Val de Vie wines served as excellent thirst quenchers for Polo admirers next to the field, who came to enjoy the game that is dubbed as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sport of Kingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Kids entertainment and Vintage games included Polo for toddlers and Giant Jenga. Guests were eager for the arrival of the proudly South African musician, Majozi, who has recently emerged onto the scene from the coastal city of Durban. At the age of thirteen, he started to teach himself guitar, which eventually led to him studying for a foundation course in jazz and popular music at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Over the past year, Majozi has been steadily climbing the South African music ladder, getting the opportunity to open for Matthew Mole, Gangs of Ballet, Zebra and Giraffe, Mango Groove and international artist, Yoav. What better way to celebrate family Sundays than with good music, delicious food, wine and sunshine. A blissful Sunday for Val de Vie Market Lovers!

The Wedding celebration of Jeanine & Luis Jeanine and Luis celebrated their gorgeous wedding at Val de Vie in November 2015. Jeanine shares some of bridal wisdom from the day and describes her simple yet stylishly magical dream day. What memory from your wedding day stands out the most when thinking back? We loved every second of our wedding day and there are so many special memories that it is hard to choose. For Luis, it was seeing me walking down the aisle, and

for me it was our last dance. Simone (our awesome wedding planner) arranged for the band to play Coldplay’s “Sky Full of Stars” and the staff handed out sparkles to all the guest on the dance floor. It was such a lovely surprise and the perfect end to an amazing day.

Is there anything you would have done differently? I wouldn’t have spent so much time worrying what the weather would be like on our wedding day :)

Any advice for future brides? Plan the kind of wedding that you want, instead of being too concerned with tradition or expectations. Don’t let Pinterest overwhelm you and never forget the reason behind it all, which is you marrying the love of your life. And if you can, hire a wedding planner! As for the actual wedding day, surround yourself with people you love, take a deep breath and just let the day unfold. 4. What did you love most about Val de Vie? The attention to the detail, the impeccable service from the team, the beautiful views, the golden sunset and their ability to make our dream come true.

When did you realise that Val de Vie would be your venue? We looked at several venues and fell in love with Val de Vie as soon as we walked in. We wanted a formal wedding which is why

Events & Media Val de Vie was perfect for us. The elegant black and white entrance to the Pavilion, the polo field and beautiful ballroom created the perfect setting for our black tie wedding. We had lunch, enjoyed some bubbles and decided on our wedding date.

What was your wedding experience like? Luis and I had the time of our lives! The entire day we were surrounded by the people we love most, laughing, dancing, and having the grandest time! A huge thank you to the Val de Vie Events team for the coordination on the day. Everything came together perfectly, we could not have imagined a more wonderful day. All we had to do was to relax and enjoy every moment with our family and friends.

Did you enjoy the planning process? The planning process was almost just as much fun as the wedding itself. My mom and I had the best time planning and dreaming about the wedding. Organising a wedding from afar can be intimidating and the best decision we made was to have the Val de Vie events team fully coordinate our wedding. We came to Simone with lots of ideas and she provided us with great advice, kept us organized and brought our vision to life.

Harvesting at Val de Vie Estate We chat to Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Huguenot Winemaker Renier van Deventer about this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harvest at Val de Vie Estate. The 2016 harvest will definitely be remembered as one of the more challenging vintages we have experienced. The severe drought that we experienced throughout the country, specifically in our winelands, is the main reason for this with areas such as Darling and the Swartland region being the worst affected.

uckily, with the life giving Berg River flowing through the estate, Val de Vie is in the fortunate position to have sufficient water for irrigation and to manage the vines optimally in these very dry and hot conditions. This vintage also marks the second vintage done at the new Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Huguenot Vineyards Winery, situated on Val de Vie Estate, with a yield of 95 tonnes this year. The winery works extremely well for smaller production winemaking and allows us to really craft top quality wines. We have a variety of different tank sizes to meet the needs of each individual batch and style of wine that we can uniquely create. The harvest was much lighter than previous years. The grape bunches were very small and the berries were extremely small too, which is a good thing for the winemaker, as the skins of small berries tend to have a higher concentration of colour and flavour.

We started almost three weeks earlier this year compared to previous years because of very warm temperatures causing the grape to ripen at a much quicker rate. We finished quite early with most of the white varieties and then some late reds made their way through. The white wines are showing good ripe fruit characterstics on the nose, with full and round flavours lingering on the palet. The overall quality is looking very promising, especially on some of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blocks that were harvested a bit later. The red wines have a very concentrated nose, with beautiful ripe red berries, blackberries and blackcurrants notes and on the taste, the wines are well structured with a good balance that lingers on the aftertaste. This is very promising as the red wines will now age for the next 18 months in new French Oak barrels to develop even further and for the oak to integrate with Val de Vie Estate

From the vineyard the wine resulting in a good harmony between fruit and oak flavours. All the grapes are hand harvested and left in our cooling room overnight to cool down. The next day the grapes are destemmed and the grapes hand sorted on the sorting table to ensure only the best grapes are selected and end up in tank to then be fermented into wine. During the whole winemaking process, everything is closely monitored and tasted;

from the juice phase, during fermentation and right through to the final wine. A great amount of time is spent on keeping a keen eye on detail and to make sure every wine made, is of premium quality. Even though the harvest season comes with its long working hours – the sacrificing of most nights and weekends – the team at the L’Huguenot winery have a great time crafting great quality wines and keeping their morale

high with the occasional braai after work and sipping away on one of our favourite wines at the end of each week. Val de Vie Residents are welcome to visit us here at the cellar where we’ll be happy to show you around and share our passion with you. Funds hearten communities in Cape Winelands The victorious amount raised at this year’s Cape Wine Auction, an impressive R15 Million, is set to support underprivileged youth with education and life skills.

record was broken when the first ever bottle of Touch Warwick 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon was sold for an incredible R13 million and then Port2 Fino Lot, sponsored by Port2Port, was auctioned off for the amount of R1.25 million. Every cent raised, without offset or deductions, is added to the Cape Wine Auction Trust and given directly to charity. Hosted at Klein Constantia Wine Estate, the auction ensured guests were treated to scenic views, a wide range of wine from neighbouring Constantia farms, craft beer and market style food from award winning chefs Peter Tempelhoff and PJ Vadas. Each guest was confident in their bidding and competed for the 40 once-in-a-lifetime lots on offer, with packages featuring rare wines, exceptional private homes, supremely talented chefs and winemakers, and access to the inner sanctum of the South African wine industry. These extraordinary opportunities come along once a year and are not repeated.

he design and interior concepts, established by my wife Monique (Unique Living – design and interior specialist), focused on the use of space, levels, beams, textures and natural colours to encapsulate a warm and modern living space in which a family can reside in peace and happiness. The lifestyle approach was also focused on the appreciation of the elements and prevailing winds at Val de Vie Estate, with a design that allows natural light and flows resulting in a “feeling of being outdoors even though indoors”. This philosophy is further enhanced by the use of stacker doors throughout the ground level. The design focuses on freedom of movement with sufficient spatial allowances between doors, walls, cupboards and counters. The stacker doors on the north east side of the house cater for extended length and high level ceilings to maximise the view of the game reserve and the beautiful Paarl Mountain backdrop. The staircase was designed to take advantage of the Simonsberg and Franschhoek Mountain views. The use of natural light was enhanced by utilising “floor to ceiling” windows throughout the house. When all these elements are combined, the result is a home that represents all the values we love and which we can share with our family and friends.

The Principal Agent for a Construction project S

ince ancient times the Architect was seen as the main consultant on a building project. In fact when an Architect is mentioned in the construction of the pyramids in Egypt he was the designer, engineer and builder for the state. As time became faster and more complicated the role of the architect evolved to today’s role as the designer of building projects. Later the Contractor became a party on its own and then the Engineer started working independently and also divided in different disciplines like the structural, civil, electrical and mechanical engineers. Money became a factor and that led to the professional called the Quantity Surveyor who measures the quantities and set up the Tender documents and final account ensuring that the budget is managed. Traditionally the Architect also played the role of the Principal Agent, the person in control of the building contract, but lately, alternative professionals also fulfil the role as the Principal Agent and in modern days this includes consultants like the Quantity Surveyor or an Engineer and in big projects it will be part of the Project Manager’s duties. These days one will often find that the Principal Agent is an

independent consultant appointed specifically to fulfil the role of the Principal Agent. I will deal with the independency later. So what does the Principal Agent do in a construction project? The “PRINCIPAL AGENT” is defined as the entity appointed by the client to manage and administer the agreement entered into between the employer and a contractor for the execution of the project or part thereof. He controls the process of construction and act as the middle man between the developer (client) and the contractor. He ensures that the terms of the building contract gets executed in an orderly way. He further administers the building contract and any actions stipulated by the building contract. It is obvious that the Principal Agent being the middle man between all the parties need to act totally independent in his duties. Building projects are complicated operations. There are a lot of parties involved that have different objectives to achieve in a construction project. The Client wants a product that is of good quality and practical to use for the intended use, within his targeted budget. The Contractor wants to achieve a profit and future work using

He can assist with the planning and approval process of the project, the identification and selection of a contractor, the tender process, the design and budget stage, the selection of the type of contract/s. The bottom line: The appointment of an independent Principal Agent at a very early stage of a planning/building project can save the client a lot of time and money and can deliver a project with less conflict and stress. he Paarl-Franschhoek Valley was showing off again with its great weather as the day started with a polo match to entertain guests as they arrived at the Polo Pavilion. Many of the polo ponies that played are ex-race horses that have been retrained to play polo, giving them a whole new career, a new home and a second chance at equestrian sport. The Val de Vie Events team once again set a high standard with beautiful décor, a high tea with delicious treats and comfortable lounging for buyers as they viewed the parade of horses from various stud farms across South Africa. The Yearling Sale was also

However, the sale’s overall results were down, with the aggregate dropping by 40% from R15 780 000 last year to R9 920 000. Both average and median prices fell markedly as well, with the average falling (by 28%) from R192 439 to R139 718, and the median dropping by 13%. Not for the first time, the progeny of leading sire Var proved popular with buyers, and it was the son of Forest Wildcat who duly

topped the 2016 Val De Vie Yearling Sale. Catalogued as lot 9, the colt was consigned by Varsfontein Stud (as Agent) and has been named Varlocity. A half brother to the ill-fated G1 Golden Horseshoe winner War Horse (by Victory Moon) and G2 Supreme Cup winner Deputy Jud, Varlocity was bought by the latter’s owner, Adriaan Van Vuuren, for R1.5 million. Van Vuuren not only bought the sales topper, but also received a magnificent diamond necklace, courtesy of Anthony Peter. Varlocity is the most expensive yearling yet Val de Vie Estate

Stable Talk sold at a Val De Vie Sale, with his price setting a new record for the sale. Varsfontein also consigned the top filly, a Captain Al’s daughter named Princess Peach. A full sister to Listed East Cape Nursery winner Princess Alberta, the bay miss, catalogued as lot 11, and was sold to Glen Kotzen for R700 000. Adriaan Van Vuuren’s Misty Meadows operation topped the buyer’s list, with Misty Meadows acquiring 3 lots for a total of R1 620 000, while Cape trainers Glen Kotzen and Mike Bass also enjoyed notable sales. Glen picked up six yearling’s, for R1 430 000, with his tally including the top priced filly, while the Bass buys including six lots for R555 000 – including a half brother to the yards’ very promising 2 year old Bombs Away. Not surprisingly, Var was the sales leading sire by aggregate, with the sprint king’s two yearling’s grossing R1.76 million and averaging R880 000. Second leading sire at Val De Vie was the deceased Tiger Ridge, whose eight yearling’s offered, all sold for a total of R1.28 million. Former champion sprinter What A Winter, who has really made a smart start to his stud career, was leading first crop sire, with the son of

Environment and Bird life The protection of the environment is very important for us at Pearl Valley. We have numerous projects to ensure the sustainability of the environment while we are enjoying a round of golf. The official bird species count over the past two years has grown from 100 to 132! This is very significant. Our bird list is a must for the bird lover and indicates where on the estate particular species can be best viewed. Naturally the golf course and the dams afford some of the best viewing spots for these birds. Rare species like the

White-faced Duck, African Jacana, African Snipe and the Malachite Kingfisher can be viewed on the golf course.

The Juniors Our Junior golf section is thriving, so please send your kids to our junior golf programme, everyone is welcome. We host a junior competition once a month on a Sunday, advertised in the calendar. Every week we host a junior clinic on a Friday afternoon where professionals teach the young ones the finer details of the game. Our Junior Captain, Lloyd Phillips, will be eager to welcome all new juniors to the clinics and the competitions. Pearl Valley Ladies Open 2016 The third instalment of the Pearl Valley Ladies Open organised by the Ladies Captain Shoona Burman and her committee and sponsored by Pearl Valley, with title sponsor Tracey’s Diamonds, took place on Tuesday, 15 March. This annual highlight on the Pearl Valley calendar sees golfers from across the Western-Cape participating in a unique event, with much anticipation to play the Jack Nicklaus Signature course.

his year the ladies also participated in a Titleist putting competition by Scotty Cameron and Cobra club demo on the driving range. After warming up, 128 golfers lined-up for a shotgun start in a betterball stableford competition format. Despite windy weather which made for challenging course conditions, Renée Goosen-Kämper and Gretel Raats played excellent golf, coming out on top as the winning pair. Coming off course, the ladies donned their finery and enjoyed a smart dinner hosted in the clubhouse, with prize giving and raffle draw. Nicky Ashby had the lucky raffle ticket and is now the proud owner of a fabulous 18ct white gold pendant with four diamonds valued at over R11,000 sponsored by Tracey’s Diamonds. A variety of prizes were handed out and another lovely touch was when Franschhoek based contemporary impressionist painter Lyndsay Patton donated one of her paintings to be raffled which a delighted Carol-Ann Raisbeck took home. From start to finish the concept is to give ladies a unique, personal experience, which starts with a smooth process at registration programme where a goodie bag is handed over, where after, players can enjoy a cappuccino or a snack, browse arts and craft displays and shop for golf attire in a pop-up shop or at the Pearl Valley Golf Shop. For the evening programme, the clubhouse was entirely transformed with

Says Shoona Burman “An incredible amount of planning and detail goes into the event and I thank my committee for their hard work and passion and especially to Hilary Clery who went above and beyond to craft a Parisianstyle décor theme for the dinner, bringing it all together beautifully on the day. This event is a fantastic showcase for Pearl Valley and I wish to thank both Evert Nel and Bruce Birrell for their tremendous support, as well as our wonderful sponsor Tracey’s Diamonds. Carl Krog and Mike Westman deserve mention as the course was in superb condition”. No doubt the 2016 event raised the bar further, with compliments being shared before tee-off and streaming in after the day was over. The Ladies Open has a very interesting and unique history, borne from the vision of Laurie Chaffe, who became a member in 2009 and took up the Ladies Captain mantle in 2013. When Laurie became a Pearl Valley resident and member in 1999, she found very few active lady members, her first games were with only four other ladies. Because of the growth and encouragement within the ladies division over the years, getting to know every lady member, Laurie was buoyed by requests and support to establish the first Ladies Open day. Says Laurie “This was easier said than done, the enormity of organising the event only hit later! Would anyone come? I had never done such a thing before or been involved in it!” Things started to fall into place quickly, as if it was meant to be, when she was approached by member Corlia Douglas bringing Kropman and Son (Morkel Pieters) on board as a sponsor. And so the planning for the first event commenced, with the ladies working tirelessly to raise sponsors and prizes and close liaison with Gawie Marx and Carl Krog to ensure the most perfect of days. Some of the members’ husbands helped on the course and with checking cards - quite a task!

The 136 ladies who played in the first event were simply blown away and the scene was set for an annual tradition that has garnered much praise and is known far and wide. Laurie and her committee, supported by the Pearl Valley team, again enthusiastically rolled out the second open in 2014 which also heralded the new event partnership with Evan Tracey of Tracey’s Diamonds. Last year Evan donated a stunning diamond ring and this year a spectacular diamond pendant for the event raffle which raises funds for the Captain’s Charity. Besides the fact that the game of golf is at the heart of the day, a greater cause is also in the spotlight by giving back to the community. The beneficiary of the Captain’s Charity is each year decided by the Club Captain (currently Evert Nel) at the annual AGM held in April. The charity started in 2012 with the Red Cross Children’s Hospital as beneficiary, followed by donations to Franco, Enza and The Rock (development causes) and for the past two years for Drakenstein Palliative Hospice. Combined during 2014 and 2015, the Captain’s Charity have raised R330,000 through various club initiatives, the Ladies Open and contributions by Pearl Valley. The Ladies Open is a wonderful team effort and the event is enhanced by personal contributions from a number of Pearl Valley members as well as a variety of other sponsors. At the conclusion of the 2016 competition, ladies are already looking forward to play in next year’s open in March.

Touch Rugby at Val de Vie

al de Vie Estate offers its residents the perfect environment to pursue an active lifestyle, with plentiful space and a range of facilities. This is what prompted resident Grant de Wetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s initiative to start a Touch Rugby Club right here on the Estate. This is a wonderful and social way to stay fit all year round while taking advantage of our beautiful surroundings. A few gentlemen have already signed up and they play on the Polo A field every Friday afternoon from 17:30 to 18:30. Grant encourages residents from all ages and fitness levels to join them. Ryk Neethling Swimming Stars

ere at the Ryk Neethling Swimming Stars Val de Vie we teach children the skills to swim while having fun. It has been proven that children master the technique much faster when they are having fun and at the same time they develop a permanent love for swimming and being in the pool. Several of our swimmers recently competed in either their school’s galas or competed against each other in galas during January and February. All the swimmers performed very well – we are extremely proud of all of them. Four of our swimming stars will compete in the Junior League Champs on 12 March 2016. Good luck to Lara Botha, MJ Hasenbroek, Michael Potgieter and Thomas Truter. We will remain open during the winter period (pool temperature will be increased as soon as the winter arrives). Players Swim Club report

he Players Swim Squad had a fantastic

season and are currently preparing to compete in various National competitions that will take place during March and April. During December 2015, we competed at the Western Province Championships where we won 14 gold medals, 8 silver medals, 6 bronze medals and 154 personal best times. Jana Koch was awarded Best Female Athlete in the 11 Year age group. Andre van Huysteen came in at second place in the Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Individual top scores and Franco van Niekerk came in at fifth place. Ten of our swimmers represented Western Province at the SA School Champs that was hosted in Gauteng. Our swimmers returned home with 8 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals. Andre van Huyssteen, Emile Lutzeler, Franco van Niekerk and Craig Emslie have been awarded full Western Province colours at the WP Prize Giving. Craig Emslie, a sophomore at IRSC in Florida, USA, broke the 100 yard USA Colleges Record and was a member of the national record-setting 400 IM and 800 freestyle relays. Congratulations to Ryk Neethling who features in the All-Century Team that was announced in February 2016. A panel of

20 coaches, swimmers, administrators and members of the media selected the team consisting of 26 swimmers and 6 divers, plus a coach and swimmer & diver of the century. Because the house on the rock stood firm. Brick Art Construction planned an awesome outing for the children of Kinder Ark. With hard hats and all, the children spent a few hours on a building site while Leonhard Jonas explained the building process. Afterwards they were treated to snacks and cool drink. What a great day.

Val de Vie Social Committee We are proud to introduce the Val de Vie Social Committee.

e are fortunate at Val de Vie to enjoy a wonderful lifestyle surrounded by the majestic mountains and the winelands of the Boland. These blessings, together with a country lifestyle, are more than enough reason to interact with residents on our estate, who also share and treasure our surroundings. The first phase of our estate has more than 410 completed home dwellings that are currently being occupied by home owners or tenants. With the current level of development, our estate has grown to a maturity level where, we as residents can take ownership of our lifestyle in our estate. The aforementioned factors were the inspiration to organise a Val de Vie Social Committee for the residents living on our beautiful estate. The main purpose of the Social committee is to initiate and promote social events and to

create a platform where residents can interact and participate in social, sport and leisure activities. The first members of the committee are: ● Stefan van Niekerk (Chairman) ● Johan Kruger ● Johan Stander ● Chris Meintjes

The first social event is planned for 16 April 2016 and will take on the form of a Potjiekos Competition at the Clubhouse. We encourage you to participate in this family event and team up with your Val de Vie neighbours and friends for this social event. Further details will be published on the Community Portal.

The Social Committee will inform residents of any upcoming events by way of email, sms and the Community Portal. A specific forum was created on the Community Portal to promote this initiative and will allow residents to interact with one another and keep abreast with the most up to date event information. Please subscribe to the Social@vdv forum on the Community Portal to avoid missing out on any communication.

Events to look forward to: • A Wine Expo that will offer winemakers from around the Winelands area the opportunity to present their wines. • Informal Street braais, where residents can relax and get to know one another around a casual braai. • Dinner and Dance for a more formal opportunity to dress up in your evening best and dance the night away.

New armed response for Val de Vie Estate

he safety and security of our residents has always remained our highest priority. It requires that we constantly innovate and implement new features and measures, as there is simply no margin for complacency. The latest improvement comes in the form of a tactical armed reaction unit. We maintain that the regular patrols inside the estate should be continued “gun-free” by guards carrying pepper and stun guns, however outside the physical Val de Vie fence, we need a highly trained armed unit which could form a deflective security shield. It comes with capabilities in tactical response, intelligence gathering, interacting with the SAPS and other neighbouring security forces to share information and prevent crime, medical 1st aid assistance (including snake handling), stress testing of our thermal perimetre and other security measures, as well as security assistance to Val de Vie HOA members outside the estate (restricted to the immediate Paarl vicinity). The unit is a special extension of the

services rendered by Thorburn and will be actively managed by their senior staff in conjunction with the security committee. The unit will also collaborate with the various other security units operating in the Valley. Although this latest development is a direct security measure, it does not detract from our focus in uplifting the surrounding community in general. Apart from the many more job opportunities which will be created in the larger Val de Vie, the Val de Vie Foundation Trust will invest significant funds into community upliftment and charitable projects in the Valley. This Trust was established by the Development Company and will be funded by 1% of the gross sales proceeds of the Developing Company as well as 5% of the levy income of all new sub-HOA’s in the greater Val de Vie. Families residing in the estate are welcome to call on the armed response unit for any assistance anywhere in Southern Paarl / Pearl Valley area. The number to use is 086 000 0015 (please save this as a speed dial contact). This will

take you directly to the Thorburn Control room which will dispatch the response unit. In addition to the above, Val de Vie has started implementing further traffic calming measures by purchasing one of several

schedule 1 criminal offences disqualify access immediately. If an individual and/or an entity commits, is directly involved in a crime or any related criminal activity which has any risk to the safety and security

If there is a criminal record it is reviewed as to the type of criminal activity committed, and when it was committed whereupon a decision is then taken whether to allow such a person access or not. Any

of homeowners and staff on the estate, they will be removed and banned from entering the Val de Vie Estate. However, individuals and business entities cannot be banned from entering the estate due to ‘disagreements and/or disputes’ relating to poor services or non-payment of services etc. These ‘disputes’ must be settled directly with the respective person(s) and/ or companies involved by means of arbitration or any other legal methods at their disposal. Val de Vie Estate and the security department can unfortunately not get involved in these disputes or disagreements to deny access to people or companies. FAQs What are the HOA office hours, and where are they situated? Val de Vie Sport and Leisure Centre Office Hours: Monday to Thursday 07.30 – 16.30 Fridays 07.30 – 16.00 Closed on weekends and public holidays.

When are Levy payments due, and how does the extra levy affect me? 1st of the month, in advance. When you buy a plot from 1 September 2012 in the extra levy phase, you have a 4-month grace period from date of transfer, to do your planning and to start building before the extra levy is applicable. When building starts, you then have an additional 11-month period to complete the project, in which the extra levy will again not be applicable.

How do I update my personal information with the HOA? Please update your personal information on the Val de Vie Community Portal. For more information, please contact the HOA at: hoa@valdevie.co.za.

How and when can I do my security gate enrolment? New HOA Members: Gate enrolment can only be done after the property has been registered in your name, during office hours at the HOA reception and proof of identification is required.

How, and when can I obtain a remote for the inner lane booms/river frontage gates? Remotes are available to residents only, at a cost of R220 per remote. Landowners that are in the planning phase, may request the building control office to motivate an application for a remote. Remotes can be ordered, and paid for, at the HOA reception.

How and when do I obtain my post box key? A post box key can only be obtained after the property has been transferred into your name, during office hours at the HOA reception.

How often is postage sorted? Postage is retrieved from town, and sorted daily. You will receive a notification slip in your box for parcels that are too big for the box. These letters/ parcels need to be signed for, and collected, during office hours at the HOA reception.

How do I apply for a dustbin?

New Tenants: Enrolment can only be done after tenants obtain approval from the HOA. Copies of identification documents, and rental agreements, must accompany completed enrolment forms.

It is the homeowners responsibility to apply for a dustbin, once Drakenstein occupation is issued. Use your SG number as reference, and phone Drakenstein Municipality at 021 807 4715.

Workers: All domestics, gardeners, au pairs, butlers, etc., need to be enrolled, with necessary identification documents. Valid work permits are mandatory for foreign workers.

Our refuse removal is done weekly, by Drakenstein Municipality. We form part of their ‘purple zone’. For collection days, please refer to their schedule at www.drakenstein.gov.za

How many pets are allowed?

recyclable material will be collected. All you need to do is put your ‘dry’ recyclable waste into the free clear bag you are provided with. Then place it next to or on top of your refuse bin, ready for collection. Homeowners can also make use of the paper and glass banks at the Maintenance Centre.

What fish have been established in the dams, and is fishing allowed? Grass Carp, Kurper, and Bass have been stocked in our dams. Fishing is only allowed on a catch-andrelease basis. Please respect these resources.

How do I gain access to the Picnic Area? The HOA Picnic Area is located on the banks of the Berg River, on the Northern side of the Estate. Access to the River Frontage and Picnic Area is controlled, and only possible to residents via pre-programmed remote controls (with the same remote as for inner lane booms). Access is only possible via three gates - the Southern Gate, the Gate at the Picnic Area, and the Northern Gate. Access is limited to non-motorised transport, during daylight hours only.
