The Majestic Mountains around Val de Vie Estate

It's impossible not to notice the mountain ranges that make up the backdrop of the views on Val de Vie Estate. These mountains are part of the Cape Fold Mountains, a 1000km series of parallel ranges that run along the southwestern and southern coastlines of South Africa. With heights varying from a moderate 1000m to 2300m, the mountain chain consists of long parallel ranges separated by equally long valleys. Unlike other mountain ranges, they rise directly from the valley foors with no foothills, creating a dramatic landscape.

The history of the Cape Fold Mountains is fascinating. They were formed between 330-350 million years ago when the Falkland Plateau collided with Southern Africa. As the continental plate on which Southern Africa is found drifted northwards, a rift was formed, which fooded, creating the shallow Agulhas Sea. The 8km thick sediments on the seabed formed the basis of the rocks now known as the Cape Supergroup rocks. Further pressure between the two plates closed the rift, and the edge of the Falkland Plateau was forced downwards, giving rise to the Cape Supergroup of mountains. The weight of the mountains caused the continental crust of Southern Africa to sag, into which the Karoo Supergroup sediments were deposited, which effectively buried the mountains. Despite being eroded over time, the Cape Fold Mountains still offer breathtaking scenery, and the 150-millionyear-old-rivers that run through them create spectacular defles and chasms that are characteristic of these mountains today. The Berg River, for example, is the drainage channel fed by the tributaries fowing from the surrounding mountains, bringing water from the mountain catchments and the soils that line the PaarlFranschhoek Valley.

Val de Vie Estate is surrounded by a number of mountain ranges, each with its own unique history and characteristics. Groot Drakenstein, located east of the Estate and stretching from Franschhoek, is a notable example. Klein Drakenstein,

situated to the south of Franschhoek with Victoria Peak (1590m) as its highest point, is another. Other mountains include Paarl Mountain, named 'de Diamont en de Peerlberg' (Diamond and Pearl Mountain) by Abraham Gabemma in 1657 due to its pale granite rock glistening in the sun after a rainstorm. Paardeberg was named after the Cape Mountain Zebra, which once wandered the mountain slopes across the Western Cape. Limietberg, the mountain range to the east of Val de Vie Estate, was named this because it was the boundary of the Cape Colony, while Simonsberg was named after Simon van der Stel, Governor of the Cape Colony, who travelled to the area in 1679.

In addition to these mountain ranges, the local mountain passes are also worth exploring. Franschhoek Pass, originally called Olifantshoek (meaning ‘Elephants Corner’), was built by Lord Charles Somerset to facilitate easy access to the Overberg hunting grounds. This historic pass follows the seasonal migratory routes of elephants and can be observed from the road just before Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve.

Another well-known pass in the region is Du Toitskloof Pass, named after Francois du Toit, a 17th-century Huguenot settler. Bainskloof Pass, completed in 1854, was preferred over the Du Toitskloof Pass to reach the mountain's interior. The pass is named after the Scottish military engineer Andrew Geddes Bain and is now a national monument within a natural heritage site. It is part of the Limietberg Nature Reserve and offers a glimpse into the region's past.

One of the oldest passes is the Helshoogte Pass, built in 1854 between Stellenbosch and the mission settlement of Pniel. Waggoneers who used the pass named it, as the steep gradients and rudimentary brakes of heavy wagons made it quite taxing to traverse.

Equestrian Excellence: A Showcase of Skill

The Val de Vie Equestrian Club recently hosted a funflled training equitation show, with classes ranging from pole on the ground up to one metre jumping. In addition to showjumping displays, competitors were evaluated on their competence in both walk and trot, as well as the seamless coordination between horse and rider. The best riders in each category received beautiful rosettes and prizes, generously provided by sponsors Arco 360, Enbarr and SA Equine Health. Mark your calendars for the next training show, which will be held on Wednesday 9 August. Coinciding with National Women’s Day, this event will have a delightful ‘pretty in pink’ theme. Raising the Bar

Personal trainer at The Yard Gym, Zach Snyman, will travel to India in July to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation Championships. Competing in the men’s 67kg category, he will showcase his strength and skill in two technical competition lifts, the ‘snatch’ and the ‘clean and jerk’. In preparation, Zach is adhering to a strict training regime and eating plan, with fve training sessions per week, totalling an average of 13 hours.

Zach discovered his passion for weightlifting after participating in CrossFit, where he relished the challenge of heavy lifting. He has previously participated in several national events, including the prestigious South African Weightlifting Championships. However, this is his frst international competition – and if all goes well, he hopes to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2027.

While in India, Zach aims to achieve a personal best, and if all goes to plan, he will also attempt a national record. The current national records for Zach’s weight category are 110kg for the snatch and 145kg for the clean and jerk. To set the national records, he will have to snatch 1.65 times his body weight and clean and jerk 2.15 times his body weight – an impressive demonstration of his strength and determination. We wish Zach all the very best.

Defying Limits: Tatenda’s Journey to Bodybuilding Success

Tatenda Makiwa, Personal Trainer at The Yard Gym, recently competed in the PCA South Africa, Cape of Storms bodybuilding competition, achieving an impressive 1st place in the Classic Bodybuilding and 2nd place in the Men’s Physique categories. His journey to the stage involved many months of rigorous training and commitment, as he followed a carefully structured training and eating regime that pushed him to his limits. For eight weeks, Tatenda undertook a volume training-focused programme to increase muscle mass and strengthen his physical foundation, followed by four weeks of low-volume, high-intensity workouts that fne-tuned his physique. “I am extremely passionate about what I do, and I believe the discipline and dedication required for competitive bodybuilding enable me to grow personally. I also hope it inspires those around me not only to train hard but perhaps to embark upon their bodybuilding journey,” he said. Tatenda has been training for 14 years and competing for the last six years. In 2018, he was placed 5th in the world at the WFF International held in Singapore in the Men’s Physique category.

With a background in fne art and textile design, Craig has an innate understanding of the interplay between fabrics and their surroundings. Following its opening earlier this year, the elegant interiors at Sela Vie have become a talking point among residents and those who have visited this destination restaurant. Unlike many other fox species, Cape Foxes are highly sociable animals that form tightly-knit family groups consisting of a mated pair and their offspring.

These groups work in harmony, cooperating to defend their territories, hunt for sustenance, and provide care for their young. The strength of their social bonds contributes signifcantly to their survival and overall success as a species.

Cape Foxes possess an extensive vocal repertoire, utilising a variety of expressive sounds, such as barks, screams, and chatters, to communicate with their family members and defend their territories.

Nature's Crafty Trickster

As skilled predators, Cape Foxes play a pivotal role in maintaining the delicate ecological balance of their habitats. They actively regulate populations of small mammals and insects, contributing to the overall health of an ecosystem.

They are known for their exceptional problemsolving skills. They have been observed using their intelligence to overcome challenges, such as accessing food sources and fnding shelter. Their resourcefulness and ability to adapt to various situations demonstrate their craftiness in navigating their environment.

A delightful pair of Cape Foxes have made Val de Vie Estate their home. Scientifcally known as Vulpes chama, Cape Foxes are true foxes and the smallest canid (a mammal of the dog family) in South Africa. Their exquisite silver-grey fur, accentuated by large pointed ears and dark colouration around their mouths, adds elegance to their appearance. Standing at a mere 350mm at the shoulders and weighing approximately 2.5 – 3kgs, these foxes exhibit remarkable agility, with their bushy serving as a clever counterbalance during their swift and nimble manoeuvres.

Thriving in harsh desert environments, Cape Foxes display exceptional adaptability. Their fur, dense and insulating, provides them respite from the scorching heat of the day and cold nights. Equipped with acute hearing and excellent night vision, they effortlessy hunt and forage in even the dimmest of light. Cape Foxes boast a diverse palate, embodying the true essence of an omnivore. They relish a wide range of delicacies, including small mammals, reptiles, insects, birds, fruits, and seeds. Fear not; these charming creatures pose no threat to children or pets. Harvest Time at the Wellness Farm

The new-look Wellness Farm has reopened in line with Val de Vie Estate’s commitment to conserving the natural environment. From 7 July, residents will be able to pick beautifully fresh produce with the help of Wellness Farm employees Lemon and Rita. Lettuce, spinach, baby beetroot, spring onions, chives and more will be available during the winter months – all grown with care and through sustainable farming practices. Follow the signs at the last circle before the Berg River Bridge along a well-maintained dirt road, and please don’t forget to bring your bags and baskets. Produce will be weighed and charged accordingly (a card machine is available). Hearts Warmed with Blanket Donations

Our residents have once again made a signifcant difference in the lives of those in need. Through the Val de Vie Foundation, 100 blankets were recently donated to the Gratefulness Community Soup Kitchen, which serves daily meals to over 300 children in Mbekweni and also functions as an aftercare centre for these young individuals. The initial batch of 100 blankets was gratefully received by the caretakers of the Gratefulness Community Soup Kitchen, who handed them to the little ones as they arrived from school that afternoon. Our residents continued to drop off blankets on a daily basis at designated points on the Estate. Additionally, businesses on the Estate pledged funds to further support this noble cause and the impact of these collective efforts has been remarkable. The Val de Vie Foundation extends their heartfelt gratitude to all for their kind contributions and for bringing warmth and comfort to the children of Mbekweni.
