Chairman’s Report

A New Season We wish all our homeowners and residents a happy spring and all the excitement that comes with it. There is much to look forward to with the beginning of summer and the polo and golf season starting again in October and with Cintron Pink Polo being our first event for the season in November. We are very pleased with the opening of the new L’Huguenot Wine Cellar and thank all residents who attended the successful launch in September. We invite you to join your fellow residents and friends for our annual Val de Vie Run in October and Triathlon in November. Both sport events are coupled with the Val de Vie Market – a great opportunity to get out, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and meet your neighbours.

Building activity

New developments

Building activity on Val de Vie Phase 1 and Pearl Valley has waned to 67 projects, as 440 homes are already completed on Val de Vie and 333 on Pearl Valley. That leaves only about 50 open erven in Phase 1 and 138 open erven on Pearl Valley. New play parks are also being added to Pearl Valley. The Polo Village Apartments are completed and the Polo Village Offices is due for completion in 2017. The hotel is the last large project remaining in Phase 1. To ensure that the Vines II construction workers enter through our turnstile facilities, they need to be allowed through the estate. However, in future, construction teams will enter through a new gatehouse on the eastern side of Phase II. This, along with the reduced construction activity, will greatly relieve pressure on the gatehouses and roads.

The new Val de Vie phases are progressing well. Sales of units on the Vines development proceeded three times faster than anticipated, with only 10 unsold units remaining. This means that construction will be completed faster than expected and residents will be exposed to less construction-related challenges such as dust, muddy roads and building noise. The construction of the new traffic circle at the R301/Kliprug road intersection is underway and will run until 14 December. Once complete, the new traffic circle should allow for safer access to the estate. The developer has also offered to fund construction of a 55m2 mezzanine floor in the

Val de Vie gym, in response to many requests from homeowners for additional floor space, and to avoid possible congestion as a result of additional members from the Vines development.

The Polo Villages development is now complete and the units will be transferred over the course of the next three months. The remaining piece of land between the Polo Villages and the Pavilion is zoned for a hotel, although at this stage, when and by whom the hotel will be constructed, is unconfirmed. The Pearl Valley hotel’s construction is going smoothly and we expect it to be complete by February next year. Work on the new bridge over the Berg River is also scheduled to commence soon. The development rights have been obtained, tender invitations were issued and construction is due to span from 1 November 2016–31 July 2017. The entire Val de Vie II development area, comprising 320 hectares, is currently being fenced into the estate with the full Val de Vie specification thermal-enabled and electrified fence. This will be completed by end of September and will enable the estate to link up with Pearl Valley and include

Chairman’s Report it within its security boundaries. It remains the vision to have easy golf cart and vehicle access between Val de Vie and Pearl Valley. The exact terms of this and the possible reciprocal use of each HOA’s facilities are being ironed out between the two boards of trustees. There has been a total of 61 sales, 20 developer properties and 41 resale properties sold, since March 2016 with plot prices showing an increase of 20% in value. We are very pleased with the increased interest in Pearl Valley showing improved liquidity for investors.

Social responsibility We have mentioned the Val de Vie Foundation Trust in various forums, but you can expect to hear more in future, as the operations of the Foundation are being established. The Foundation is a not-for-profit trust that was established by the development company in 2015, and is now ready to stand on its own. The Foundation’s founding mission is to strategically invest its resources to support and uplift less privileged communities within the greater Cape Winelands region, with specific focus on the Drakenstein Valley. It will focus on youth and leadership development, education and job creation as well as projects of social and spiritual concern – all for the relief of underprivileged communities. The development company, Val de Vie Investments (Pty) Ltd has committed 1% of all developer sales income to the Foundation. All new Home Owners’ Associations will allocate 5% of future levy income from new developments to the Foundation – creating an annuity income stream. Two of the current Val de Vie Homeowners’ Association Trustees, Clifford van der Venter and Leon Cronje, represent the Val de Vie HOA on the board of trustees of the Foundation, and another homeowner, Lorraine Hadfield, is actively

VAL DE VIE

involved in the development and implementation of the Foundation’s brand plan. It is a viable and sincere initiative, capable of leaving a huge and lasting impact on the area. In its first year of operation it has already, in partnership with Valcare Trust and Valley of Abundance, distributed R2,5m rand to successful community projects. One of the areas of focus will be homeowner participation as we have had many enquiries for residents to get involved. Collectively we have a tremendous pool of skills in our community and this will be an opportunity to use it so to make a more significant impact together.

Marketing The development company’s marketing department has continued its strong campaign and the estate as a whole has received excellent exposure. The purchase of Pearl Valley, Prince Harry’s visit and African Rainbow Capital’s investment in the development company has generated huge PR value. Val de Vie has a very strong media presence with more than 16 000 Facebook followers, over 4 600 Twitter followers, over 5 000 on Instagram and an average of 7 500 unique visits to our website each month. Pearl Valley’s Facebook following has also increased by 30% since April and now stands at 6 300, with Instagram at 713 and Twitter at 1 744. The estate featured on SABC’s Win a Home and Top Billing, and broadcast on RSG. Media hype around the Laureus, Veuve Clicquot and Pink Polo events has also contributed hugely to marketing the estate. Our own magazine’s distribution exceeds 15 000 copies and we have featured in many local and international magazines. We also benefit from monthly property exhibits in Gauteng and KZN, as well as a one in London. We are pleased to share our most notable achievement to date, our ranking as Top Estate, in South Africa, as nominated by New World Wealth.

Appreciation As usual we need to acknowledge all the homeowners who give their time to participate in the various management structures including the nine sub-committees and the board of trustees. We invite Pearl Valley residents to join Pearl Valley’s sub-committee structures and get involved. Thank you very much for all your effort, in particular the four homeowner trustees Leon Cronje, Clifford van der Venter, Riaan Terblanche and Anton Gildenhuys.

Summary In conjunction with the development company and management team, we have set ourselves a clear long-term goal: “To deliver luxury residential and leisure experiences in a sustainable, secure and picturesque environment, and to serve the broader community and provide financial returns for all stakeholders.” We, the trustees and management of Val de Vie, are committed to delivering on our promises and can confidently acknowledge achievement (in the interests of residents) in the following areas: 1. Continuous improvement in landscaping 2. Great security record 3. Excellent reputation in the marketplace 4. Sufficient reserve funds 5. Surplus income statement 6. Dynamic, competent and experienced trustees and management team 7. Appreciating property values You can be proud to know that you have invested in the right estate. We thank you for your passion, loyalty and ambassadorship. We look forward to continuing our relationship – as we work together to uphold our reputation as South African’s finest estate. Gentleman’s Estates and River Reserves Here, you’ll have the opportunity to live life as you would on an expansive farm; to keep horses and certain breeds of livestock, and to cultivate vineyards, olive groves or organic vegetable alongside the life-giving waters of the Berg River. Ranging from 1,2 hectares to 3,53 hectares, the Gentleman’s Estate offer a sense of space and proximity to nature, without the stresses often associated with commercial farming or the extent of management required for the maintenance of larger farms.

3.

River Club

CY

All River Club properties provide direct access to the beautiful and tranquil Berg River. The River Club properties were conceptualised to create a farm-like feel on a slightly smaller scale than Val de Vie’s Gentleman’s Estates and River Reserves. Similarly, these properties will provide you with sufficient land and space to plant vines, olive groves, orange trees or the like and to keep a limited number of horses, without the need to manage larger farming operations.

4.

The Reserve If you have always dreamed of having a large vegetable garden to grow your own high quality produce or maybe to look out onto your land with your horses in eyesight, then The Reserve is especially for you. These stands border on the protected 40 hectare Fynbos Reserve and is the epitome of country living.

Val de Vie Foundation

A better life for all The Val de Vie Development Company and Val de Vie residents are a caring community of homeowners who believe firmly that the Valley is life-giving for all, not just the fortunate few who reside in the estate. A faith-based initiative, we believe that by strategically investing the Foundation’s resources, we can demonstrate through action how we can transform lives and restore the future. Lorraine Hadfield shares the heart behind the Val de Vie Foundation.

Caring residents We believe that 2016 will be the year when the Foundation will truly come of age. As the newly appointed Advisor for the Foundation, and a relatively new Val de Vie homeowner, my passion is now aligned with purpose in being able to truly touch and transform lives in the PaarlFranschhoek Valley.

Holistic development Dedicated to supporting individuals develop to their full potential from foundation phase to primary education, secondary and tertiary education, and then finally mentoring and funding budding entrepreneurs from disadvantaged communities in the Valley, we will help create much-needed new jobs. We are blessed with a team of talented entrepreneurs whose dream is to mentor and empower promising young businessmen and women to realise their dreams.

Uplifting the community The estate is not only an economic driver in the Cape Winelands, but is also committed to the support and upliftment of the Valley. Founded in 2015, the Val de Vie charitable foundation has raised R10 million to date and it is expected that another R90 million in cash will be added to this over the next eight years. But it is not only cash that the Foundation is contributing; almost more importantly is the generous and unstinting contribution of time, resources, experience and skills that will enable us to provide a hand up to our community partners.

Val de Vie

Val de Vie Foundation

The Conquered Womens Day Dinner Inspiring, recognising, ubuntu The Val de Vie Foundation, together with Valley of Abundance, hosted a truly inspiring “evening to remember” for 80 ladies from Mbekweni at our Polo Club Restaurant. On Women’s Day, 09August, the ladies were lauded for their leadership in the community and inspired by local and national motivational speakers. The generous local business sponsors helped make the occasion possible, sending individual mentors to mingle and celebrate one valley for all. The night truly sparkled with a magnificent setting, gold candelabras, superb food and music that got everyone dancing the night away. The ladies all left with a smile on their faces and joy in their hearts, as sisters networked with sisters, swapped contact details and promised to keep in touch.

Genuine The truly genuine desire of the Val de Vie management team to give back to the disadvantaged communities, since the estate’s establishment in 2004, is palpable. From sensitively helping the farmworkers on the estate relocate to new, desirable housing in Paarl, to Martin, who personally supported Cheslin from Fleet Coffee Company to realise his dreams as a barista entrepreneur (see article on next page), to Morne who understands that no man is an island and that securing the valley will have enormous benefits to all that live here, to Ryk who

Val de Vie

personally mentored Luvo Mayanga during his early training before he went on to the Pretoria High Performance Centre and won a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics, each and everyone has put their money where their mouth is. And I would be remiss not to mention Simone, whose passionate faith in God drives all she has done with her life as she works with her team to mentor and drive charitable events at Val de Vie, events like Pink Polo, the Internship Programme, Conquered Dinner for the Mbekweni ladies and their enthusiastic, unstinting support for the Val de Vie Foundation.

Transparent, governance This Foundation belongs to all on the superestate. We have big plans for the Foundation, which will have its own dedicated website and will cover areas like governance, quantifying the impact of expenditure, and listing key milestones. We will also clearly explain the structure with our partner, Valcare, as our back office to provide corporate governance. The ongoing business of the estate is clearly separate from the Foundation. We will also have a separate tab dedicated to homeowners who want to be involved and share in our vision.

Val de Vie Foundation

A sense of accomplishment and dreams that did come true We are proud to showcase four individual success stories from Val de Vie and one from Pearl Valley, drawing from the Foundation’s inspiration for a Better Life for All. Cheslin Grobbler From barista to entrepeneur Cheslin Grobbler is the founder of Fleet Coffee Company, a business that provides quality coffee at events. Cheslin is passionate about empowering local youth and showing them alternatives to crime-related activities. Fleet Coffee Company offers them barista training, employment opportunities and the chance to gain practical hands-on experience. Val de Vie shares Cheslin’s goals to uplift the local community, which is why Fleet is our first choice for functions.

Mbekweni aspirant young golfers Weekly training and lessons Through a generous donation from Pearl Valley golf members and Swingfit, the Mbekweni Kids Project has received golf clothing and clubs, and mentorship at one of the most acclaimed golf courses in South Africa. The boys have been coming for weekly lessons at Pearl Valley and recently started taking part in our monthly Junior Competitions held on Sundays. Sondlo Mnqobi and Yamkela Spogter won both their divisions in their first round on the course!

Tannie Ingrid Minies Entrepreneur, employer Tannie Ingrid, who worked as a domestic worker at Val de Vie, had one big dream: to empower her community in Koelenhof. Inspired by Tannie Ingrid’s vision, Val de Vie helped her to establish a cleaning and staffing company. Today she has her own business, Servant Hearted, which employs 40 people as waiters and cleaning staff for functions. Val de Vie is proud to make use of her impeccable services for all its functions. Val de Vie Foundation Angela and Angelique Abrahams From farm to pastry chefs Twins Angela and Angelique grew up on Idille Farm, neighbouring on Val de Vie. The two sisters shared a dream: to become pastry chefs and own a restaurant. Their mother, a domestic worker on the farm, was able to send them to Boland College in Stellenbosch where they learned the art of pastrymaking. When the twins struggled to find employment, their mother approached Val de Vie for help. Angela and Angelique consequently worked as waitresses at the Polo Club Restaurant, and today they are proud to be pastry chefs in the restaurant’s kitchen.

Pomella Mesilane From intern to waitress Hope through Action is a local charity, started by Val de Vie residents, Philip and Judy Green, which gave Pomella the opportunity to get ahead in life. The sport centre is located in Mbekweni and Val de Vie is proud to have been involved in raising funds for and supporting the growth of the project. After showing strong leadership qualities and helping out at the centre, Pomella met the Val de Vie team at a Mandela Day initiative. To complement the

GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

- SEPTEMBER 2016

From the first moment you lay eyes on her, you notice a spark. An undeniable light that draws you in. Her personality resonates a glimpse of an eternal flame, so warm and inviting. Her laughter is contagious. Not just because it echoes into all four corners of a room, but because her overflowing joy for life is so remarkably tangible. If you are ever granted the opportunity to step into her light, we really hope you do. Highly fortunate are those who cross paths with her. Meet Charmaine Stone. Her spirit fills a room. On the first day of spring two years ago, Charmaine received news of a new season in her life. A new chapter that would demand every ounce of strength in her bones, literally. At the mere age of 33, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After her diagnosis, Charmaine’s outlook on life changed profoundly. “Everything has changed. I look past the small things now that used to bother me. Life has truly become more beautiful in every sense. I appreciate everything and everyone around me more. Breast cancer teaches you to stop focusing on the small, insignificant things that used to steal your time and your joy.” Charmaine loves the state of togetherness, good conversations, a cozy fireplace, animals, red wine and pairing with it the perfect dark chocolate!

Polo with a purpose

Cintron Pink Polo is getting ready for its 7th year celebration at Val de Vie in aid of breast cancer. The event aims to honour survivors and fighters globally on a vocal platform. We were honoured to meet and host three gorgeous ladies diagnosed with breast cancer at the Polo Club Restaurant. We’d like to share the amazing stories of these three inspirational women who have shown strength and faith in their fight to overcome cancer. Marinique Viljoen from Val de Vie Events sits down to listen to their stories.

Celebrating Felicity Joseph Meet Felicity Joseph, better known as “The Pink Lady”. She is a life-size Tinkerbell. A tough cookie wrapped in layers of strength. Engulfed in a spirit of adventure, she is beautifully untamed. A fierce female to be reckoned with. Her ‘brave’ just got a whole lot bigger, as she has no desire to shrink herself to the point of fitting in. She is bold in her purpose to stand out. Daring and unapologetic, she takes life in her stride. Felicity was diagnosed with breast cancer on 11 August 2015 at the age of 35 years. “It started out as a terrible pain under my arm. I always used to think it might be an allergic reaction to my underarm roll-on causing the pain. At first, even my GP thought it might be a gland causing the discomfort. Never once did the thought cross my mind that it might be cancer. I never thought it would ever happen to me, and then it did. I started 12 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by 25 sessions of radiation.”

“Take to heart and understand that sometimes only your presence is needed. A gesture as small as holding someone’s hand, is simply enough.” - Felicity’s advice to family and loved ones.

Polo with a purpose Celebrating Miriam Moses Meet Miriam Moses. A Mamma-Afrika at heart. A modern, understated Saartjie Baartman with a zest for life! One looks at her and sees the best of both worlds – a soft persona that hits the sweet spot and, of course, a precious gem hidden deep within the perfect storm. When you listen closely, her heart beats a drum; you can hear her song, for she sings joyfully all day long. During her normal mammogram check-up on 22 December 2015, Miriam received unfortunate news. “I decided that our lives won’t stop because I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I knew I had to face it and make the best of the situation.” Two weeks later the lump was removed and Miriam started chemotherapy straight away. “It all could so easily have been different, thinking that I could not have been here anymore.” Miriam smiles, “I am so grateful that I am still alive.” Miriam loves South Africa and Val de Vie Estate, “I want to see myself grow old here.”

“I would like to encourage women to go for their annual mammogram check-ups. Take all the support you can get. Even if it doesn’t feel like it during the journey, trust that you will come out stronger in the end. It’s not easy, but hold on to what you believe in. That will keep you going.” – Miriam Moses

Make a difference and support women like these. Bless the chemo patients at the Cintron Pink Polo 2016, taking place on 5 November 2016, where guests will have a shopping experience where they can select a gift, write a note of encouragement on a tag and place the product in the box. These boxes will be delivered to an oncology centre in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley, where 55 ladies will find the beautifully branded gift box on their seat when arriving for their treatment. Guests can expect to be on the edge of their seats for a sensational afternoon of legendary polo, a unique food and fashion experience and a notorious ambience of polo with a purpose Tickets available on: Computicket.com

Head Chef Chris Law After graduating from Durban High School in 2002, Chris took part in an inhouse traineeship at the International Hotel School for three years, completing a professional cookery course that has formed the foundation of his career. After travelling to the US to gain international experience, he traded the sunny climes of Florida for the colder weather of one of the undisputed gastronomic capitals of the world, London. Here he worked at The Montague, picking up valuable management experience that assisted him in securing the position of head chef at Durban institution Harvey’s Restaurant upon his return to South Africa a year later. His enthusiasm and skill was rewarded with the restaurant being voted as the Best Restaurant in Durban by The Mercury in 2008. However, the lure of the Cape Winelands was too much for him and he moved to the Delaire Graff Estate near Stellenbosch. His dedication and passion for food was rewarded when Delaire Graff made it into the Top 20 restaurants in South Africa in 2012. Chris also spent time as head chef at Reuben’s One & Only and as head chef at Conrad Gallagher’s restaurant café Chic. But it was Dish, Food & Social and their large robust vigour for food and life that brought Chris to Val de Vie as Head Chef of Pearl Valley.

A Taste of Paarl

Home to some of the Western Cape’s finest fare, world-class wines, unique activities, and architectural heritage, the historical town of Paarl has much on offer for tourists and locals alike. by dei Gratia Communications

P

aarl Rock’s mystic sheen in the early dewy mornings and its unique rounded formations has captured the fascination of many travellers and the hearts of all those who live in the charming town below. Aside from the magnificent mountains and views, Paarl has many gastronomic gems and also offers internationally recognised wines. So with the arrival of spring and summer on its way, here are a couple of spots to explore on the sunny weekends to come.

Cuisine with a difference In a town where foodies are spoilt for choice, Cosecha (co-say-cha) at Noble Hill Wine Estate offers a unique culinary twist through its Latininspired cuisine. With their roots in San Diego, drawing on influences from neighbouring Mexico, mother and son team Kathleen and Kristopher Tillery took ownership of the estate in 2008, bringing with them a breath of fresh air to the “French Valley”. When ordering at Cosecha, it is customary to start off with a few bocaditos – small plates that are made to share – for the table. Available on this menu is their signature bocadito: guacamole prepared table-side by expert gauquistadors. The main menu also boasts a variety of Latin favourites, with choices such

as mouthwatering lamb barbacoa and delicious beer-battered fish tacos. Located on the border of Paarl and Simonsberg, the estate lies in a region known for making some of South Africa’s finest wines. Kristopher attributes the success of his wines to the region’s terroir and has a humble approach towards the process of winemaking, which makes a wine tasting with him a delight.

A taste of adventure Just a 30-minute drive from Noble Hill is the spectacular Rhebokskloof Wine Estate where true Winelands hospitality can be enjoyed. Val de Vie

Horse riding through the lush vineyards with Wine Valley Horse Trails, also based in Rhebokskloof, is the ideal way to experience the unspoiled beauty of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve and its breathtaking views. Wine Valley Horse Trails is owned and run by horse enthusiast, Michelle Mazurkiewicz,

from beginners wanting to admire the scenery on horseback, to experienced riders looking to explore more adventurous routes through the Drakenstein area.

A regal affair Further afield, set against the backdrop of the area’s magnificent mountains, lies the grand Cascade Country Manor. Steeped in history, the unpretentious property is situated on a 23ha estate, which was once the royal

homestead of the Duke of Bedford. The fourstar boutique hotel is now owned and run by husband and wife, Maika and Volker Goetze, who transformed the property into the nature-centric retreat it is today. The hotel’s setting is home to the Cascade Spa – a haven within a haven. Skilled therapists take their cue from the natural environment surrounding the spa to offer a sensory experience. winelands meals and detox treatments. The hotel’s namesake is its cascading waterfall, which adds to the estate’s peaceful environment, making it the ideal getaway to relax and unwind. To showcase its surroundings, the hotel also offers guided tours of the Paarl Winelands, sensory walks through ancient olive groves and unique olive oil tastings. While the hotel caters for those looking for a peaceful outing, it has equal offerings for those who like to live on the

edge. Adrenaline-junkies can opt to mountain bike through the forest trails or even abseil down the 100m drop off the famous Paarl Rock. Surrounded by serenity and splendour, Paarl boasts true country hospitality, award-winning wine farms and a plethora of outdoor activities to suit every occasion. With the likes of these offerings and more, it is no surprise that both locals and visitors can’t get enough of Paarl’s flavours.

SABC 3’s Win a Home Finale at Val de Vie Season 3 of South Africa’s favourite interior design reality show has come to a fabulous finish, brought to you by Private Property in proud association with Nedbank. Val de Vie is proud to have been part of the Win A Home show that saw the lives of three people change forever.

F

or the last 10 weeks, Win a Home joined forces with the Afternoon Express team on SABC 3. Three of South Africa’s most promising young designers were chosen by three of the country’s most prominent interior design tastemakers – the editors of VISI, Elle Decoration and Real Estate Magazine. Every day on Afternoon Express viewers could follow the three design contestants in partnership with their mentors as they turned three empty apartments into high-design homes at the Polo Village right here on Val de Vie Estate. With Plascon adding a splash of colour to the homes and Caesarstone providing the stone surfaces, these homes were on the cutting edge of South African interior design. Viewers could also enter the Win a Home Grand Prize Competition to stand a chance to win the biggest prize on South African television. One lucky viewer would win their choice of one of the designer apartments at Val de Vie. On 26 August, live on Afternoon Express the interior design competition drew to a close and the design contestant winners were announced.

36

grapeVine magazine

- september 2016

This year on Win a Home, the judges weren’t the only ones choosing a winner, and the viewers could vote for their favourite design contestant. The viewers’ votes were tallied and candidate architect Juané Venter walked away with the R50 000 viewer vote prize! The Win a Home judges, Simon Bray, CEO of Private Property, Anne Roselt, Plascon’s colour manager, and Stefan Antoni, director of ARRCC, had the difficult job of deciding which contestant they thought was the best. After a lot of behind the scenes deliberation, emerging interior designer Rudolph Jordaan took the top prize of R50 000 and a coveted internship at global design studio: ARRCC with mentorship by Stefan Antoni. The season culminated with the giveaway of a Val de Vie apartment in the Polo Village development worth over R3 million. Six viewer finalists were chosen via a randomised draw and, live on the show, one viewer’s future was made a whole lot brighter. Lady Luck chose Palesa Moisi, a fourth year student at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, as this year’s home

winner. Palesa got to choose the home of her dreams from among the three design contestant’s apartments at a grand ceremony at the Val De Vie Estate where she chose Minenhle’s bold and elegant Polo Village apartment. After being presented with the keys to her new home, Palesa, originally from Zeerust in the North West Province, said: “Having a home means a lot to me, I love home and I love family, and for me... this competition has changed my life completely.” Congratulations Palesa! We wish you all the best. Tune in to Win a Home next year for more amazing South African interior design and another life-changing home giveaway.

In the media Describe your style and favourite room in the Polo Village Ambrosia Suite? I had a very clear vision of what I like and don’t like, what I thought would work and what wouldn’t in that space. I tried to design a lifestyle, not just decorate a space. I am most proud of my living/dining room area because I took a unique approach to this space and had a lot of fun. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. The living room also contains a lot of pieces made especially for my unit, such as my dining room table, coffee table and chandelier. I worked with local artists to design a unique chandelier, which is the centrepiece in the room and includes hints of copper and pastel colours. This room is the epitome of my style and I think it is something unique, but also practical.

Juané Venter Candidate Architect at WAUW Architects in Cape Town with a Masters degree in architecture from the University of the Free State, Juané is also a freelance photographer who has used her travels to inspire her design.

He has two years experience working at SVA (Stauch Voster Architecture) International in Durban. Ntuli has gained knowledge of both commercial and industrial architecture styles in this short time.

What were your sources of inspiration for your Polo Village suite? The source of inspiration was the context and surrounds of Val de Vie: from the mountains, down to the forests and vineyards and the green grass of the polo fields. My favourite room is the master bedroom, which is where I feel I found my feet in the

competition – and it happens to be the first task I won. I’m most proud of this room because I feel I covered most of my clients’ (the judges, sponsors and mentor) briefs with the risk I took on the Plascon distressed wall, which is inspired by the Val de Vie scenery, to the luxurious walk-in closets that double up as a feature and also offer ample storage to add value to the saleability of the space.

Describe your style and favourite room in the Polo Village Ambrosia Suite? A home needs to reflect a sanctuary where you can feel comfortable enough to kick off your shoes and enjoy every moment you spend in that space, whether it is in the kitchen, lounge, bedroom or bathroom. The kitchen/ living room, which is enjoyed as a single living space, is my favourite. The kitchen is really something new and fresh for the SA market and responds to apartment living, how people live in apartments and how people in Val de Vie should be living in apartments. Its modular approach adds more value than other styles because of its flexibility and the need to customise. The sleek use of Caesarstone, coveted appliances by Smeg and the leather art cut-out sliding screen on the TV unit are some of my favourites.

Rudolph Jordaan Rudolph Jordaan is a Pretoria-born 28-year-old interior designer, who graduated from Inscape Education Group in 2009 and ventured to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on a design project. Jordaan has since become a lecturer and the Western Cape representative for the South African African Institute of Interior Design Professions. Val de Vie

his north-facing home’s greatest asset must be the beautiful living area that opens on to the wide patio overlooking the manicured golf course and beyond to Paarl Rock. The infinity pool reflects the clean lines throughout the house and seamless glass allows for uninterrupted views. The dÊcor is relaxed yet stylish making for an easy and inviting home. The Venter’s house shows a perfect balance between modern and classic elements evident in everything from the colour palette to the change in textures of finishes in the different living areas. Each lounge has a different feel suited for any occasion and personality in the home. With a love for the Cape Winelands, Andre and Di moved to Pearl Valley in 2008 with their two sons, Jarrod and Josh, who are now both attending university. Di had a clear picture in her mind of her dream home and decorated the house herself. Pearl Valley has been a home and a haven for the past eight years and now Di and Andre are busy building a new and bigger house on the estate. This is a perfect home to raise a family and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Captains Report

Pearl Valley Golf Club Captain’s Report It has been a busy winter season with a multitude of projects on the go. The biggest change to the golf course for the year was the reconstruction of the 4th Greens Complex. There were numerous other smaller projects and improvements. All this work was carried out by the Golf Data maintenance and construction teams and we thank them for their great work. We are sure that members and visitors will be very pleased with the course improvements when it opens towards the beginning of December. 4th Greens Complex The 4th green complex change was necessitated for a number of reasons: ● Pinable Positions There is currently a lack of pinable positions on this green and the redesign will resolves this issue. ● Maintenance This green is the most difficult of all the greens from a maintenance point of view, mostly due to its height not being sufficiently above the waterline. ● Drainage issues Both the green and a fair portion of fairway near to the green sit too low relative to the water and as such will always have drainage issues – the redesign will resolve these issues. ● Aesthetics The water body in front of the green will become a greater feature, and more of the green’s contours will be visible to players, improving the aesthetics of the hole. The stone clad wall is a feature that fits in with the environment of Pearl Valley and can be a design element that is used should there be any future work around water features on the course.

Bunkers To date, we have reconstructed four greenside bunkers of which two are on the 8th hole and two on the 11th hole. There are another four

greenside bunkers currently under construction on the 9th, 16th and 18th which will be completed by the end of September. We are hoping to complete a further two bunkers before the season starts.

Tees We joined the club tee with the professional tee on the 3rd hole. This now gives us just over 500 m2 of teeing surface, which was much needed on this hole. The 17th ladies tee was also enlarged with the 2nd club tee, 7th club tee, 10th professional tee, 10th ladies tee and 15th professional tees, all stripped and re-levelled.

Golf Data Founded in 1989, Golf Data is widely considered to be South Africa’s leading full service golf course design, construction and maintenance company, having successfully designed constructed and maintained some of the most prestigious and awarded courses and estates in South Africa including Pearl Valley’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Golf Data has been serving Pearl Valley for over 13 years with Mike Westman as Golf Course Superintendent who has been overseeing the course maintenance.

Concrete panels Fifty two concrete cart path panels were replaced. All the tee accessory stands at each tee were also converted to concrete bases with a kerb stone border. Captains Report

Polo Captain’s Report We begin the new season on a high note as we look forward to starting our weekly chukkas in October. The club tournaments promise to be exciting for both players and spectators alike, as we will be hosting a 2, 4, 6 and an 8-goal tournament this season, catering for the entire club. Highlights to look out for include our major annual events: Cintron Pink Polo in November, and the Veuve Clicquot Masters in March.

T

he Val de Vie Polo Club welcomes Hannes Pickard as the new Polo Captain for the 2016/2017 season. He will be supported by Jason Drew as Chairman, Erland Ebberston as Treasurer, Johann du Plooy as Vice-captain and Rob Hampson as Polo Manager. Rob is a 1-goal player and graded as an A Grade umpire in South Africa. We are pleased with our ever-growing membership, which has now risen to over 50 playing and social members. We have continuous enquiries from both international and local players to become members, and the ladies membership has also grown significantly. The club is in a healthy financial state due to proper financial discipline and control by our previous and current treasurer. We also welcome Rosemary and her daughter Nicky Bartlett to Val de Vie. Nicky is the Deputy Director of the Equestrian Academy at Pearl Valley and specialises in life coaching, mentorship and special needs support. She holds the International Level 1 and 2 Equestrian Coaches qualification and has successfully competed in dressage, showing, showjumping and equitation. Nicky will be managing all the other equestrian facilities and the Val de Vie Stables. The Polo Club looks forward to working with her this season. The fields should also play well this year after all the proper care and attention that has been given by Derick Germishuys and his landscaping team from Servest. The fields have received their first sanding and the popup sprinklers have been lifted, which all makes for safer fields in fast and exciting polo. We would like to thank the Servest team for their great effort and look forward to playing on world-class fields. We’re excited to have a third field added to the estate in the new year, which will hopefully ready to play on two seasons from now. A sincere thank you to the polo club members, HOA, and the Events team for their

support and efforts towards the success of our polo season at Val de Vie. Polo in the Cape is going from strength to strength and we are fortunate to be in this position in the current economic times. Last but not least, the most important members of our club, the ponies! Many new ponies have arrived for the season, some from as far as Argentina. We look forward to seeing them in full swing on the field. We are very much looking forward to what is set to be an exciting 2017 polo season. We would like to invite all the Val de Vie homeowners to come join us at polo chukkas this season – be it to try out the sport or to enjoy a drink while watching this King of Sports.

Health & Wellness Val de Vie Gym The Val de Vie Gym is located at the Sports and Leisure centre at the main circle on the Val de Vie Boulevard. Mieke le Roux manages the spacious and fully equipped gym and offers a range of Pilates classes during the week. The gym also has two squash courts and an indoor swimming pool right next door. Whether you are a training athlete, looking for a personal trainer or just enjoy keeping fit, the Val de Vie Gym has everything you need. Operating hours Open seven days a week from 05h00 to 21h00. Staff available Fridays and Saturdays, from 06h00 to 18h00. Pilates classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays Mieke.leRoux@valdevie.co.za

Pilates Pilates is known to stretch, strengthen, gain flexibility and balance your body, while connecting the mind with the body. Strengthening the ‘core’, which includes the abdomen, lower back, hips and buttocks is the biggest benefit that you will get from practising Pilates. Pilates incorporates all of the above with an emphasis on particular breathing patterns. The class is offered in the form of a mat class or equipment class – it is a personal preference as to which one is best for you. Joseph Pilates developed Pilates in the early 1900s. The Pilates Reformer was designed to rehabilitate people with injuries as well as to complement the exercises he developed for the mat.

What is the Pilates Reformer? In basic terms, the Reformer is a machine, like a sliding bed attached to springs to provide resistance. This adjustable resistance helps you to ‘reform’ muscular imbalances, tone, strengthen and lengthen the body without adding bulk, for a fantastic all over body workout, adding the challenge to your core against an unstable surface, and increases tone for the arms and legs more than mat work. The Reformer works to lengthen while strengthening the muscles rather than building bulk. It, therefore, makes for an

effective, non-impact stretching and toning programme that is safe for the joints and favoured by physiotherapists and osteopaths. Joseph Pilates never intended either mat work or the Reformer to stand alone. His approach was integrative, combining mat and machine for the best all-round programme, providing the full benefits that Pilates can offer. Reformer is particularly useful for: ●●Helping those with specific injuries and weak abs to start a programme and get out of pain. ●●For those that like the extra challenge in their workout, push your body and see faster results with the use of an unstable carriage in order to make your body work harder. ●●Pregnant moms. The variety of exercise options available is increased by the use of the Reformer and the resistance it provides is extremely valuable.

Benefits of Pilates: • • • •

Improves fitness • Improves flexibility Improves atrength • Improves balance Improves posture • Less stress and strain Pain reduction • Improves core strength

• Improves muscle tone • Improves immune system • Rehabilitation of injuries • Improves sports results • Increased vitality • Reduces risk of iInjury • Improves joint mobility • Reduces risk of injury

Mieke le Roux Gym and Health Club Manager at Val de Vie Mieke is a keen cyclist and triathlete, competing in Half Ironman distance races. Through her own physical training, Mieke discovered Pilates and the wonderful effects the method has on posture, injury rehabilitation and prevention and sport-specific strengthening. She studied comprehensively with Pam Lamond of Pilates For All at the Suspi Sport Institute at Stellenbosch University and also did the comprehensive mat, ball, band, reformer, cadillac, chair, barrel, pregnancy Pilates, basic biomechanics, spinal curvatures certification at Trifocus Fitness Academy. KinderArk

A new home for Kinder Ark Under the trees next to the newly refurbished L’Huguenot Cellars on Val de Vie, is the beautiful little haven for the youngest of our residents, the Kinder Ark Preschool. With the rapid development and growth of Val de Vie, Kinder Ark’s need for bigger premises became evident. Madri Steyn – a passionate teacher and the owner of Kinder Ark – scouted the horizon for a new place to let down anchor and found it just down the road on Val de Vie’s Valentia Farm.

A

fter months of negotiation, an agreement was reached and Valentia Farm will now be the new home of Kinder Ark. Madri’s husband Chris, an entrepreneur and an absolute opportunist, grabbed the new endeavour with both hands. A state-of-the-art, purpose-built preschool is currently being developed on the farm and should be completed by the end of September. Madri and her team will move into the new premises at the start of the fourth term, ready to welcome the children to their new haven. At the new premises, Kinder Ark will be able to accommodate 150 children. “We care for children from the ages of one to five years, and

we offer separate classes for English and Afrikaans speaking children”, says Madri. “Kinder Ark’s passion is to nurture the beauty of individualism; we teach how to serve others and we learn to love our Creator.”

had the opportunity to start a new venture on Val de Vie Estate. In January that year, Kinder Ark Val de Vie had 19 enrolled children, and today we are operating a full-day care facility for 90 children,” says Madri.

History of Kinder Ark

Kinder Ark vision

In 2008, a dynamic local preacher, Pieter Barnard, envisioned a preschool as part of the church. Very uncertain about the outcome, Madri pursued the opportunity and in January 2009, Kinder Ark Courtrai opened its doors to 63 children. “By March that year, all glory to God, we reached full capacity and since then, we struggle to keep up with demand. By 2012, we

“We live by the promise in Deuteronomy 11:14, ‘I will give you rain in your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that you mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil’.” We live by the Grace of God anointed with His Love for us.

Madri Steyn Madri has beautiful memories of her childhood, growing up on a farm in the Eastern Cape. It was her mother, also a teacher, who discovered Madri’s love of caring for children. From a very young age, her mother insisted that Madri take piano lessons because “a preschool teacher must be able to play the piano”. Her father’s lingering lesson that “your word is your honour”, would be her motto for the rest of her life. After having first qualified as a chef, Madri rediscovered her passion for children while living in America where she attended a local college and qualified as a teacher. “The older I become, the more I realise that there are very few occupations more noble than being a teacher.” – Madri Steyn

Safety & Security

Home Safety Val de Vie is proud to be rated as the Safest Estate in South Africa. While it is our duty to ensure the safety of each resident, it is important to understand that each resident has the responsibility of personal security measures in their home environment. The reckless manner in which many owners and tenants go about their key and home access management, can create major problems and is a threat to our security system. Val de Vie Risk Manager, Louis de Jager, reports on this important issue.

T

hough every entrant to the estate is registered and contractors’ access is granted only by permission of homeowners or the HOA, the behaviour of that entrant once in the estate cannot always be predicted. I know and understand and appreciate the confidence in our security systems and procedures but must point out that there are no guarantees without also taking personal control and accepting responsibly and accountability for safety and security inside the home. Our security takes excessive measures to monitor the behaviour of entrants by means of estate patrol and numerous cameras on the estate. However, to prevent any unwanted access to your personal home and belongings, each homeowner and resident must please still lock their homes and cars. Being careless with your belongings and hiding keys in obvious places like in the braai or under the pot plant, is putting your most

risk. These are absolutely dependent on access management and control, which in many instances are taken too lightly. Once you have shared your alarm code or key and therefore access to your home with an unknown entity, whether they be a contractor or domestic or maybe even a friend, you have compromised your own safety. In many cases where items go missing from homes, the only possible explanation could be that they have been removed by an outsider who had legitimate access by either housesitting, contractual work or otherwise. The theft of the car at Pearl Valley, which was recovered and the thief arrested, was perpetrated by a contractor who was legitimately given access but then was not effectively managed and supervised. It is critical to remember that not everyone who you give permission to use your house key

would be very easy to duplicate a key by making a cast or memorising the alarm code number, therefore please be very vigilant and take care to share such access only if you must and with someone you trust completely. Every case could, in the first instance, have been avoided but for the misplaced trust or carelessness of owners or tenants. There is no need to be paranoid, rather just be careful. You can make a huge difference and enhance our efforts by simply being vigilant and constantly being aware of possible opportunities that you could unintentionally be creating for those with nefarious intent.
