The words of Simon Allen, Val de Vie Estate’s Environmental Offcer’s poem entitled ‘Spring Breaks’, beautifully capture the anticipation associated with the arrival of the season of renewal. ‘In early spring, a wonder occurs; on a bare, dry twig, a swollen bud bursts out of dry brown scales. Petals emerge, their crumpled colour spreading their faces to the sun.’ As the sun extends its warm caress and daylight lingers, springtime is the perfect opportunity to invigorate your garden and

A River Runs Through It A MESSAGE

FROM THE HOA

The Berg River, spanning 294km in length, originates in the Franschhoek and Drakenstein Mountains at an altitude of 1500 metres. It fows through Paarl and Val de Vie Estate, eventually fnding its way into the Atlantic Ocean at St Helena Bay. The river boasts a catchment area of 7715 km², with about 65% of the Berg River area dedicated to agricultural use. A pivotal feature within this landscape is the Berg River Dam, a soaring 68-metre-high structure and the centrepiece of the Berg Water Project (BWP), a visionary endeavour designed to harness the winter rainfall and conserve it for Cape Town’s water supply during the dry summer months.

In June, we witnessed nature’s force in the form of a food. The sheer volume of rain was out of the ordinary, exposing several vulnerable areas. Swift action was taken to rectify these issues, fortifying them against potential future recurrences. Within the expanse Berg River catchment area, we need to be cognisant of the water fowing from the mountains into the Berg River, coupled with rising water levels during heavy rainfall. Furthermore, it also became evident how important it is for residents to take specifc preventative measures to avoid potential problems on their properties. Residents are advised to ensure the optimal upkeep of all stormwater outlets responsible for diverting water from courtyards and gullies. These outlets must remain free of obstruction and debris. Instances were noted wherein these stormwater outlets were blocked with solid matter or overgrown with grass or other landscaping plant roots.

Val de Vie Estate was designed to incorporate roads as the primary outlet for these systems. They effectively direct runoff towards the nearest road-based stormwater inlet, which subsequently channels water to the dams and stormwater channels. Residents are encouraged to promptly inform the Maintenance Team of any water distribution issues. The Maintenance Team will inspect the problem and take appropriate action where potential damage to surrounding properties could occur. As always, we appreciate the cooperation of all residents in taking care of this magnifcent Estate.

Val de Vie Estate’s Horse Safety Guidelines

Horses grace our lives here at Val de Vie Estate – during walks, cycling or driving. Our paths frequently intersect with these majestic animals, prompting us to recognise the importance of never underestimating their demeanour. Sensitive and curious, horses intricately respond to their surroundings. As animals once preyed upon, their natural instinct guides them to either ‘fght or fight’ when confronted with a threat. Their acute receptiveness to movement, scent, touch and sound, has been a cornerstone of their survival, allowing them to discern and react to potential threaths - an attribute that lends an element of unpredictability to their behaviour.

PLEASE ALWAYS ADHERE TO OUR HORSE SAFETY GUIDELINES TO ENSURE THE WELL-BEING OF OUR HORSES, YOURSELF AND THOSE AROUND YOU.

All stables are private property and unauthorised entry is not allowed. Horses are large animals and are unpredictable, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries to both humans and horses.

BEWARE OF ELECTRIFIED PADDOCKS

Fences inside some paddocks are electrified to ensure horses remain secure. Avoid contact and proximity to these paddocks.

RESPECT HORSES' SENSITIVITY

To avoid startling and agitating horses, refrain from any interaction without permission. Take pictures only from a safe distance, without trespassing restricted areas.

KEEP DOGS AWAY FROM HORSES

Dogs must remain leashed, except in dedicated dog parks. Keep a safe distance from horses while walking your dog to prevent startling them. Horses may respond aggressively to protect themselves against your dog.

BE CONSIDERATE WHEN PASSING

When walking or running near horses, maintain a safe distance and avoid sudden movement or noises that may startle or intimate them. Pass with ample space and be be visible before approaching.

OBSERVE HORSE CROSSINGS

Horses have right of way. At a horse crossing, stop at the red light and allow them to pass safely.

NO ENTRY AT PADDOCKS

Paddocks are strictly o -limits. Horses may kick, bite and accidentally trample a small child. Beware of potential injuries should they step on your foot.

FEEDING HORSES IS PROHIBITIED

Certain foods can induce illnesses such as laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome, and colic, requiring medical intervention. Beware of accidental bites to fingers or hands.

BICYCLE CAUTION

BIRD

Whispers of Change

As the days stretch towards the embrace of spring, an air of change settles around us. Among the remarkable transformations in the natural realm during this time is the resurgence of male birds’ plumage for the whirlwind breeding season ahead.

During nonbreeding cycles, many male birds adopt an appearance akin to their female counterparts. This comparatively drab plumage serves a dual purpose - disguising them from predators while warding off any confict with rival breeding males.

The metamorphosis from their nonbreeding attire involves the shedding of old feathers and the emergence of new, brightly coloured, or, in the case of certain species like the pin-tailed whydah, the elongation of famboyant display feathers. The transitory phase is known as the eclipse plumage. Triggered by lengthening daylight, this intricate process propels the bird’s hormonal activity but exacts a toll on its energy reserves and nutritional stores. Consequently, only the ft and resolute males succeed in acquiring breeding plumage.

The colouration of the males varies according to their species and are derived from the pigments in their diet or from the interplay of light on their feather structure, resulting in the iridescence observed in sunbirds, hadedas and other species. Melanin, the pigment responsible for darker tones, endows the pin-tailed whydah’s tail with its ebony splendour, which, devoid of this reinforcement, would soon get damaged. Meanwhile, carotenoids are responsible for yellow and red colouration.

Very often, the bright colouration of the males is shown in courtship rituals, featuring mesmerising displays of fight and dance. The undulating futter of the male pin-tailed whydah’s fight is a prime example. Suspended above a congregation of females, his elongated tail trailing like a streamer, he endeavours to attract the attention of his chosen counterpart. These antics set off the female’s ovulation cycle, and only when she is ready does she yield to his frenetic display.

Amidst territorial duels, the male pin-tailed whydah has earned a reputation as a formidable feathered contender. While propagating his lineage remains vital, the striking breeding colours, while captivating, beckon potential predators. A delicate equilibrium between opportunity and risk emerges. As the breeding season wanes, the famboyance recedes, and camoufaged hues re-appear.

Aquatic Maestro

We look forward to sharing more information about the birds on Val de Vie Estate in future editions of the Grapevine. In the meantime, happy spotting!

The African darter, a resident of numerous lakes within the Estate, boasts a very distinctive appearance. With its elongated body, eye-catching white neck stripe and sharp beak, this bird is not easily mistaken. Adult pairs form enduring bonds but don’t display territorial behaviour. Roosting spots, comprised of stick nests, often host a mix of sub-adults, singles, breeding adults, and other bird species. Their parenting approach involves taking turns to incubate a clutch of three to six eggs. Darters are piscivorous and use their sharp beaks to spear aquatic prey underwater. Once impaled, the prey is ficked into mid-air and swiftly devoured. Darters adeptly navigate underwater realms while hunting, appearing serpentlike as they glide with only their neck and head above water. This has earned them the Afrikaans name of “slanghalsvoël.”

Unlike most other aquatic birds, their feathers lack oily coating, allowing for effcient submersion. However, drying their plumage post-hunt becomes essential. Darters are often seen perching with outstretched wings to aid in the drying process and regulating body temperature.

Empowering our Community through Music

Music resonates within the hearts of our residents. From soirees at Val de Vie Evergreen to live performances at L’Huguenot and in the Pavilion Ballroom, the love for music on Val de Vie Estate is palpable. However, not all of our surrounding communities are fortunate enough to have access to musical instruments and education, particularly among the youth, due to fnancial constraints. Recognising this gap,12 months ago, a talented student’s pursuit of a saxophone led to an initiative spurred by resident David Anderson and supported by the Rotary Club of Franschhoek and Drakenstein Valley. The endeavour yielded the donation several dusty yet functional instruments, including a piano, keyboards, guitars and violins. The challenge then became fnding a suitable home for these treasures.

Conversations between the Rotary Club and the charity Hope Through Action led to an exciting opportunity at the Mbekweni Community Sport Centre in Paarl. Through engaging nearby schools and local benefactors, the project gained momentum. Additionally, a partnership with Salies Music Inn brought three

• RESIDENTS’ HEARTS • page 16

skilled tutors, infusing professionalism into the program. This collective effort culminated in the Mbekweni Community Music Academy (MCMA) in June 2022.

Designed to align with after-school hours, the MCMA schedule provides students with structure and purpose. A diverse selection of musical disciplines, including vocal coaching, recorders, piano, keyboard, violin, guitar and saxophone, are now within reach. Thanks to the acquisition of a pre-owned drum kit and newly added bass guitar, the rhythm section is complete, expanding the ensemble’s musical range.

Currently, MCMA nurtures 35 students who showcased their talents during a performance at a Boschendal Christmas function last year. A new identity for the group has been established, fostering ownership, camaraderie, and community visibility as students’ confdence and skills fourish.

Securing sustainable funding remains paramount to ensure the initiative’s continuity. This encompasses maintaining the quality of tutor services, procuring and upkeeping instruments, and covering transportation costs for performances. For further information or to pledge your support, please reach out to David Anderson at 060 961 8092 or via email at david@MCMA.co.za. Together, we can enrich lives and foster a legacy of artistic excellence.

WINE OF THE MONTH

The Val de Vie Perfect Host 2017 is made from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes grown locally on bush vines across the Paarl region. With a beautiful light yellow colour, the nose shows rich flavours of ripe white peaches and fresh apricot undertones supported by sweeter spicy notes from the months aged in French oak barrels. These flavours also follow through on the palate, with the wine showing complexity, layered with fruity and spicy flavours and oaky notes on the mid-palate. Citrus-like acidity gives it an elegant youthfulness and a long lingering finish. This complex wine is best enjoyed with rich foods such as pork belly or butter chicken curry.

Elevate Your Squash Game

Recently established on Val de Vie Estate, the squash club is open to all residents, property owners and the Estate’s business employees. Every Saturday morning, from 09:00 to 11:00, the action unfolds at the Sports & Lifestyle Centre squash courts. The annual membership fee is R50 per person, which allows seamless access to a community of passionate players. The club is run by the selected committee and chaired by Estate resident Johan Rothmann, an accomplished squash player. Johan holds an impressive record of participation in Inter-Provincial, SA Masters tournaments, and even World Masters Squash events. He has represented Boland and Western Province and was chairperson of Western Province Country Districts Squash before it became Boland Squash.

The club’s establishment emanated from a shared vision: to unite talented squash players and create a platform for competitive squash right here on the Estate. Additionally, it aims to foster a nurturing environment for aspiring squash players, including youngsters and beginners, by offering organised opportunities to hone their skills. The club has introduced a digital ranking ladder, offering members the thrill of challenging their peers.

A Heartfelt Thank You

In June, a devastating food struck the Cape Winelands, the likes of which hadn’t been witnessed in many decades. The impact was severe, with thousands of people in our surrounding communities facing desperate circumstances. Many lost everything they owned and had to ensure cold and hunger. In this challenging time, the Val de Vie Foundation turned to you, our residents, for help. The generosity and compassion received in response was unprecedented. The Val de Vie Foundation, aided by donations from residents, contributed over R150 000 worth of blankets, fresh produce, non-perishable items, toiletries, and even pet food to communities in need outside our Estate and across the greater Paarl area. Words cannot adequately express our gratitude for your incredible support and care. We thank every one of you who contributed, whether through monetary donations, the provision of essential items or time dedicated to assisting with distribution.

Buckets Full of Joy on Mandela Day

On the 18th of July, Val de Vie Estate residents dedicated 67 minutes of their time to make a meaningful impact. Their mission? To bring smiles to young children at local Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) in the Groendal community of Franschhoek. Joined by enthusiastic representatives from Brenthurst Wealth and Yeboneers from the @Home Learning programme, this day of giving back was a testament of unity and joy. The day kicked off at Hope Through Action (HTA) in Franschhoek, where the event was set in motion by Yeboneer Simamkele Mfakadolo whose ‘ice-break’ dance infused the gathering with energy. Thereafter, volunteers were transported to a number of ECDs in the Groendal community, where stories were read to the children. The Val de Vie Foundation donated colouring books and crayons to the youngsters, while Brenthurst Wealth donated 350 buckets flled with treats. Commenting on his experience of the day, Val de Vie Estate resident Ian Fielding-Calcutt said: “The day had a profound impact on me. The children were so happy to see us, they have so much hope, and it is clear to see that the work of the Val de Vie Foundation alongside its charitable partners is invaluable. I look forward to working more closely with the team the next time an opportunity such as this arises.”

Unleashing the Transformative Potential of Exercise

In a world where mental health disorders have surged to a staggering on billion cases globally by 2023, far exceeding pre-covid numbers, the potential of exercise shines as a beacon of hope. Embarking on a journey that transcends traditional avenues like diet and sleep, recent revelations from the University of South Australia illuminate the extraordinary impact of high-intensity physical exercise. Rapidly alleviating the grip of depression, anxiety, and distress, this phenomenon leads to remarkable progress within weeks of engaging in a HIIT program.

People often say to me, “It’s easy for you to exercise, Coach John, you are in a gym all day.” Trust me! It’s not. I’ve been training daily for more than forty years and have come to understand the ebb and fow of motivation. At least three days per week, I don’t feel like training at all; two are average, and on another two, I’m highly motivated. If I only trained when I felt like it, I would never achieve much. I primarily work out for the post-workout high; as a result of a complicated chemical process, I feel more positive, uplifted and focused for the next 24 hours. I frmly believe that in the near future, lifestyle management and high-intensity exercise will form the frst-line treatment approach.
