All stables are private property and unauthorised entry is not allowed. Horses are large animals and are unpredictable, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries to both humans and horses.

Horses have right of way. At a horse crossing, stop at the red light and allow them to pass safely.
NO ENTRY AT PADDOCKS
Paddocks are strictly off-limits. Horses may kick, bite and accidentally trample a small child. Beware of potential injuries should they step on your foot.
BEWARE OF ELECTRIFIED PADDOCKS
Fences inside some paddocks are electrified to ensure horses remain secure. Avoid contact and proximity to these paddocks. CLIC

FEEDING HORSES IS PROHIBITED
Certain foods can induce illnesses such as laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome, and colic, requiring medical intervention. Beware of accidental bites to fingers or hands.
RESPECT HORSES' SENSITIVITY
To avoid startling and agitating horses, refrain from any interaction without permission. Take pictures only from a safe distance, without trespassing restricted areas.

KEEP DOGS AWAY FROM HORSES Dogs must remain leashed, except in dedicated dog parks. Keep a safe distance from horses while walking your dog to prevent startling them. Horses may respond aggressively to protect themselves against your dog.

When walking or running near horses, maintain a safe distance and avoid sudden movement or noises that may startle or intimidate them. Pass with ample space and be visible before approaching.

Be aware when cycling near horses. Sudden bike appearances can startle them, provoking fear-driven responses. Reduce speed, ensure visibility, and pass at a safe distance when encountering horses.

Nature’s Playground Ongoing maintenance and upgrades are well underway for the extensive 42-kilometre cycling trail network that winds through the Estate, all under the capable leadership of the experienced team at Paarl Trails. From peaceful rides alongside neighbours to more extreme obstacles and pathways, the trails cater to families and mountain bike enthusiasts. Regrettably, the recent unusually heavy rainfall has led to some flooding and damage to the route. Nevertheless, this is being closely monitored, and a swift recovery is anticipated. Working with the Estate’s Environmental Officer, Simon Allen, a number of new and exciting sections are being created. Additionally, we are committed to reintroducing fynbos and the planting of indigenous trees, ensuring more shade during the summer months. There are three different trail distances on the Estate: Green (5km), Blue (11km) and Red (23km). The green trail is a base route from which the blue and red trails branch out.

The annual phenomenon of bird migration has captivated human curiosity for centuries. Each year, millions of birds embark on remarkable journeys, traversing vast distances between their breeding and summer habitats. Beyond showcasing the extraordinary abilities of these birds, seasonal migration also underscores the delicate ecological balance and interconnectedness of our planet's diverse habitats. A deep understanding and appreciation of bird migration unveil the unwavering determination of nature's most adept travellers and provide invaluable insights into the importance of preserving their habitats to ensure the continuation of these mesmerising migrations.
The arrival of the yellow-billed kite signals the onset of southern Africa’s summer season, marking a much-anticipated event in this region. Flourishing within the Cape’s Mediterranean climate, these birds have recently returned to the Estate. The yellow-billed kite, scientifically known as “Milvus aegyptius”, or in Afrikaans, as the “Geelbekwou”, is often considered the Afrotropic counterpart of the black kite “Milvus migrans”, with which it shares a resemblance. Their ranges intersect when black kites migrate south from Europe and Asia into Africa during the northern hemisphere’s winter.
Distinguishing between the yellow-billed and black kites is relatively straightforward, primarily through their beak colouration. The yellow-billed kite boasts an entirely yellow beak, whereas the black kite’s beak features a black tip. Immature yellow-billed kites bear a resemblance to black kites, but DNA studies suggest significant differences between the two, warranting their classification as separate, allopatric species. The yellow-billed kite faces no signficant threats to its existence and can be found in nearly all habitats, including suburban parks, although it is relatively rare in the arid Karoo region. Their productive habits typically involve laying one to four eggs, which hatch after about 30 days. Both parents help rear the chicks with the female protecting them from predators, while the male travels several kilometres to procure food. These kites have a varied diet and will consume insects, crustaceans, amphibians, small mammals and other vertebrates, and they will also scavenge for carrion.

A Transformative Women’s Day The Val de Vie Foundation extends our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in and donated to the Women’s Day event at the Franschhoek Valley Community Sport Centre. This special occasion saw the indoor soccer pitch transformed into an incredible pop-up boutique for 100 ladies. Every attendee was invited to select clothes, make-up, hair products, jewellery, and home décor. This event was a tribute to the work these women engage in day after day - their tireless dedication to teaching, leading and nurturing children and young people within our wider community. Empowering the Future The New Orleans Secondary School in Paarl is renowned for its academic excellence and achievements in rugby, cricket, tennis, hockey, and athletics. Moreover, its list of esteemed alumni includes Miss South Africa 2018, Tamaryn Green. Committed to enriching the lives of all in our Valley, the Val de Vie Foundation takes great pride in supporting educator Meagan Paulse and the inception of GLOW (Girls Leading Our World). This innovative after-school programme, brought to life by Meagan, was inspired by her participation in a leadership workshop hosted by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). GLOW brings together 30 young women from diverse backgrounds, guided by four capable team leaders and three

dedicated teachers. At its essence, the programme aims to provide a sanctuary for these young minds, offering a safe space to unwind, explore their identities, and engage in critical issues like self-identity and mental well-being. In partnership with Endurocad’s ACHIEVE programme, founded by South African long-distance runner Elana Meyer and also dedicated to empowering young women, a dozen GLOW girls were chosen to participate, symbolising a moment of pride for all involved. During Women’s Month, South Africans pay tribute to the 20 000 courageous women who, on 9 August 1956, marched at the Union Buildings against oppressive ‘pass laws’. Following in the footsteps of these heroic women, GLOW is dedicated to igniting empowerment among young girls within an educational environment.

Harvesting Hope In a powerful collaboration between the Val de Vie Foundation, NorSA Community Care and the Department of Health, residents of Val de Vie Estate are coming together to make a meaningful impact on the lives of 81 patients battling drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in the Drakenstein Valley. The Val de Vie Foundation first commenced its partnership with NorSA Community Care by supplying healthy vegetables from a purpose-built garden at Wellington School of Skills towards the end of 2022. Through the school’s generous land contribution and in partnership with a budding entrepreneur, NorSA Community Care began receiving fresh, wholesome produce from this garden. With the recent reopening of the Wellness Farm, NorSA Community Care now directly benefits from the harvest grown here on Val de Vie Estate, while a fully operational garden has been given back to the Wellington School of Skills. Every week, Val de Vie Estate volunteers pick five crates of garden-fresh greens, showcasing unwavering dedication, even in adverse weather conditions, an initiative led by Michele de Witt and her seven-year-old son Torben (our youngest volunteer). “A better life for all” is not merely the mission of the Val de Vie Foundation but a testament to the remarkable impact that can be achieved when our homeowners and residents unite with a shared purpose. Without the support of the Val de Vie Development Company, generously subsidising the vegetables, our ability to quadruple the donation and arrange two deliveries per month for each patient would remain out of reach. Many of these patients reside near Val de Vie Estate, and this collective effort will undeniably make a significant difference in their journey to recovery.
