ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT

FOR THE GREATER GOOD

Who could have imagined that 2020 would have been so affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. As I sit writing this winter greeting message, South Africans are in their fourth week of the lockdown and the adjustments to our daily lives have been dramatic. W O R D S B Y T E R R Y K E L L E R , E S TAT E M A N A G E R

I

remember a time in the late 70’s and early 80’s when petrol stations were closed overnight, and one was not allowed to carry containers of fuel in the car. Never before though have we as a country experienced this kind of restriction of movement and disruption to our day to day lives.

It is indeed when times are tough that one can see the true nature of people and how they respond to adversity. In this regard I must compliment our Thorburn security team, under the leadership of Louis De Jager and Brett Ashington. For some weeks prior

likelihood would follow other nations and restrict movement. The planning started on how the Estate would deal with this scenario and meetings upon meetings with all the roll players took place. The planned expansion of the Wave Scanner was accelerated and

No one could have pictured that we would have to stand in a queue for ages to get into the grocery shops to purchase a few essentials.

to the lockdown being announced it was becoming increasingly clear that South Africa would not escape the Covid-19 virus and in most

within days Danie Bosman and his technical team had the scanners installed. Our enrolment ladies, Daphne, Bianca, Inge and Chantal

worked tirelessly to enrol as many residents on the new scanners as possible before the lockdown came into force. Then there were our security team on the ground. Not a single one stayed out of work, no one complained, morale was high, and they went about their business as usual under some very trying circumstances. A fantastic effort and something to be proud of.

and that the pumps worked, irrigation systems functioned and repairs were attended to. To each and every member of the Val de Vie Estate team, I thank you for your dedication to duty, your willingness to do what needed to be done in the circumstances and for not once complaining about the situation. As Billy Ocean said, the going gets tough, “When the tough get going. ”

The rest of the Estate staff relocated their workspace to home and everyone went on with their daily tasks. Our maintenance team

What exactly the world is going to look like and how we will all

who were registered as essential staff ensured that the day to day maintenance and checks on the Estate infrastructure continued

fit into the new scheme of things is as yet unknown. What we have been able to learn from this crisis is how we can come together and

get on with things in difficult conditions; how simple it is to meet with our work colleagues or family and friends through the marvels of technology; who you can rely on to endure some pain and suffering for the greater good and who you can’t. Thanks to each and every resident who did their bit, who made a positive contribution where they could and assisted those who were much less fortunate than ourselves. To our Val de Vie Estate team, thanks for pushing through and I trust when you read this, we will be close to the other side of this crisis. Keep warm, until next time.

PROPERTY

A SAFE HAVEN IN Our sales and rental teams have been seeing a daily increase in enquiries during the lockdown phase and continue to assist individuals and families looking to make The Valley of Life their home. WORDS BY THE VAL DE VIE PROPERTIES TEAM

W

While our team has been unable to hold property viewings due to Covid-19 regulations, the uptake in enquiries is largely due to prospective buyers having plenty of time to browse online listings. However, prior to the current global health threat, our enquiries substantially increased since January this year. International interest in our Estate has also peaked and can be ascribed to the weakened South African Rand.

During lockdown time, many people will be contemplating where they would prefer spending the rest of their lives and an increased need for security and protection is high on their priority list when it comes to choosing their preferred place of residence. Although Val de Vie Estate residents are legally obliged to adhere to lockdown regulations, the Estate’s wide-open spaces, low density housing and picturesque natural surroundings brings a sense of freedom and renewed gratitude.

There will be many changes once we return to ‘normal’ life, some of these changes being the way we work, commute to work and manage our work-life balance. Covid-19 has proven that working remotely is entirely possible and productive when making use of various technological advancements available. Virtual meetings and minimal business travel will be part of our feature, making it even more lucrative to live on Val de Vie Estate and utilising technology to

offering buyers homes to move in immediately. The first 28 homes have been completed and viewing these will be done under strict Covid-19 regulations to ensure our current Val de Vie Evergreen residents are not put at risk. Our Pretoria office was officially launched early March and has received numerous enquiries from the Gauteng market, specifically on Val de Vie Evergreen.

CONTINUOUS CARE

T

he Primary Healthcare Clinic is overseen by a Nursing Manager who is based at the Lifestyle Centre offices and heads up a team of skilled nurses and carers. It focuses on promotive and preventative healthcare and offers vital signs monitoring and management (including blood pressure), medical procedures e.g. injection administration, first aid and wound care. The clinic also houses the village’s emergency response system - Namola – where an on-call nurse is dispatched the moment this system is activated by a resident.

Designed to offer complete peace of mind to residents and their loved ones, care and wellbeing at Val de Vie Evergreen is provided by Evergreen Health through a team of highly experienced healthcare professionals. WORDS BY GUIN LOURENS, VAL DE VIE EVERGREEN NURSING MANAGER

Integrated care at Val de Vie Evergreen is informed by a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals which includes a team doctor, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, audiologists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, biokineticists and social workers. Independent therapists are consulted, where necessary, to ensure that our residents receive the specific care they need. Initial and annual health assessments are conducted to ensure that health issues are detected early on and that chronic conditions are closely monitored.

A VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE VAL DE VIE EVERGREEN LIFESTYLE

Evergreen Health also offers discreet homebased care to residents, tailored to their specific needs. It covers the full range of healthcare requirements from assisted living to full-time care with medical procedures and assistive devices. Specialised services include post-operative care – this is dependent on the step-down requirements of the discharge plan – as well as memory care for residents with neurodegenerative conditions like dementia. The latter is designed to support families and offer respite for spouses and includes assistance with daily living as well as stimulating activities against the backdrop of the beautiful Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. CHANGING LEARNERS’ LIVES FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS: OVER R1.8M INVESTED IN SIX NEW CLASSROOMS FOR NEDERBURG PRIMARY

T

hursday 5 March 2020 marked a milestone for Nederburg Primary School in Lantana. PaarlGlobal donors from the USA to the Western Cape joined hands to fund brand new Kwikspace classrooms for 212 Grade R and Grade 7 learners. The Val de Vie Foundation, in

collaboration with My School, My Village, My Planet, the Hopewell United Methodist Church, Downingtown Pennsylvania (HUMC), The Foschini Group (TFG) and Rhodes Food Group proved that alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. The new classrooms, ISO 9001 quality certified for 20 years, replaced the old classrooms which were in a state of major disrepair. Through a collaboration with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the donors’ funds were matched to 40 percent, making it possible for the more than R1.8 million upgrade to take place.

The opportunity to partner “ with other donors and provide these much-needed facilities shows the true power of collaboration, says Pieter Twine, General Manager at MySchool, My Village, My Planet. The unveiling ceremony was a true highlight on the school calendar with speeches from Executive Mayor Conrad Poole, Juan Benjamin Director Winelands WCED, The Val de Vie Foundation and keynoted by Tony and Cammy Brantzeg who traveled specially from HUMC in the USA. Principal Melville Lawrence moved the audience with his testimony on what this investment meant to the

entire school and community. Each and every one of the 850 learners were recognised with an abundance of gifts to celebrate the day. Little hands were laden down with the bounty; ice cold Bonaqua flavoured water courtesy of PenBev, fresh fruit, Nederburg Primary rulers and National Geographic Kids magazines. The entire school and educators were also handed their own lovingly sewn blankets by the TFG Foundation Sew Good project. This project teaches out of work women to sew and have produced almost 250 000 blankets to date. The morning then wrapped up with the distribution of age appropriate Readers for the 212 learners provided by Biblionef.

IN DUE COURSE The move from social distancing to lockdown happened quickly. It certainly has been an interesting time and much credit must go out to our entire team for adapting so quickly. WORDS BY DAMIAN WRIGLEY, PEARL VALLEY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER

W

e have so far, thanks to the coronavirus disrupting businesses across the globe, learnt a great deal about our current service offering and operation. Due to social distancing guidelines that had to be implemented in March,

prior to lockdown, many of our members were pleased with how we created outside check-in points for our visiting golfers, removed all the rakes and really tried to limit all forms of contact in order to limit the spread of the virus.

16 GRAPEVINE | AUTUMN/WINTER 2020

At a time like this it is critical to remain positive but also to be realistic and plan. One of the biggest challenges facing us is the uncertainty of how long our course and clubhouse will be closed. In the meantime, I have loved

watching all the creative ways that fellow industry professionals have been getting their golf fix. It has also been good to see all the various online fitness challenges and classes offered through interactive online sessions. Currently all our facilities have been shut down with our focus on keeping the golf course healthy and alive. The current laws do not allow for us to bring in our full team of 63 workers, but we A HOME PUTTING LESSON MADE EASY BY JAMES WADE

have a small team of 9 workers including myself cutting the course three times a week. It is incredibly fortunate that this forced lock down happened at a time of year where the temperatures are cooler. The course is getting a “ rest and all those divots and pitch marks are starting to close up. Once the course gets its first full cut it is going to look amazing for you all to enjoy once again.

WE CONTINUE MAINTAINING THE GOLF COURSE LAWN

This year we are going to work very closely with local businesses and corporates to generate revenue to the club. We will also drive hard to come up with creative ways to attract golfers from all around South Africa. This will be a first for Pearl Valley to develop a model that is almost entirely centred around a local market. It is unlikely that we are going to see a flourish of international tourists to our estate this season and if we do it will be

that if these international golfers through whatever reason did not return, how vulnerable we would be. It has almost become a given that they will return and we have become reliant on this as more than 60% of our expenses are covered by visiting trade. To manage our risk and protect our future, it is therefore imperative that we look at ways to be more sustainable focusing on a bigger portion of our expenses being covered by residents, members and local businesses

will be spent on developing a model we feel members and residents will be able to support and be motivated to vote in at a later stage.

Prior to Covid-19 our committees, shareholders, boards and trustees were discussing the need to re-look our current business model. Over the last 17 years Pearl Valley, year in year out, has been fortunate enough to see big numbers of visiting

T FIT FOR A KING

For the past ten years, Val de Vie Estate has been the venue of choice for French Champagne brand Veuve Clicquot to welcome international visitors, celebrities and locals alike to the world of polo. This year more than 1,000 polo enthusiasts celebrated a lively afternoon complete with fast-paced polo, ‘Parisian chic’ fashion, and of course Veuve Clicquot champagne. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

he Veuve Clicquot Polo Series Invitational was the highlight event of the new Veuve Clicquot Polo Series 2019 – 2020 in South Africa, a fresh summer long event format. Once again celebrating this millennia-old sport in joyful Veuve Clicquot style, the vast green polo field, with breath-taking views of the Paarl-Franschhoek mountains, was flanked by spectators who lounged under sun-burst yellow parasols looking perfectly ‘Parisian chic’, sipping chilled Veuve Clicquot in the afternoon sun. Guests were treated to a delicious gourmet lunch, luxe seating with prime field-side views and entertainment courtesy of Shekhinah and DJ Sumbody. The vivacious Nomzamo Mbatha, international actress and philanthropist hosted the high-profile event. As is tradition during halftime, crowds streamed onto the field and stomped the divots, glasses of Veuve Clicquot in hand. Bursts of Clicquot-colour contrasted beautifully against the vast blue African sky,

with guests embracing ‘Parisian chic’ in stunning summer dresses, breezy linen suits, chic shorts, summer hats, and of course, the stylish wedge heel perfect for the divot stomp tradition. The buzz in the air was palpable as talented local and international polo players entertained fans with their exceptional skill and horsemanship. The Val de Vie Polo Club dominated in the first match with a 7 to 4 victory against Accra Polo Club with Ignaz Marx named as Most Valued Player. The main match featured top South African national players Tom de Bruin and Dirk van Reenen. A closely fought final saw Team Hisense gain victory against Team Veuve Clicquot with a final score of 9 to 8, laying claim to the coveted trophy and a Veuve Clicquot Magnum, just in time for the celebratory podium champagne spray. On the day, Jan Albert Steenkamp was named the Most Valued Player and Spanish Dancer, owned by Martin Venter and played by Marek Kanigowski, recognised as the Best Playing Pony of the main match.

he mere absence of disease does not mean that you are optimally healthy. The absence of a vaccine for Covid-19 is forcing us to protect ourselves from this contagious virus and emphasizes the importance of a strong immune system. For a virus to survive, it needs a host and if the host is not healthy, the virus can wreak havoc. Viruses hi-jack your energy systems, they move into your cells and use your resources to reproduce their own DNA and to gain energy. They take advantage of the systems in your body to reproduce and to spread. As humans we possess three types of immunity called innate, adaptive and passive immunity: n INNATE IMMUNITY – this is the external barrier of our body and is also our first line of defence against pathogens. This includes the skin and mucus membranes of the throat and gut. n

ADAPTIVE (ACQUIRED)

IMMUNITY – as we are exposed to

diseases or get vaccinated, we develop antibodies against different pathogens. n PASSIVE IMMUNITY – mostly found in babies through the placenta and in breastmilk. To combat the constant threat we are facing now with the coronavirus, the Covid-19 disease and flu viruses in general, we need to focus on supporting our immune system to the best of our ability.

Eat healthy, whole foods. Food is information to our

cells. The food we eat regulates our genes, hormones, microbiome, brain chemistry and immune system. Every single system in your body is regulated by the quality of the food you eat. You should not focus on calories, but rather on the quality and the information of what you are eating. This changes everything as you decide: “Am I going to eat toxic information or am I going to eat healing information?” Stay well hydrated with water, tea and drinks containing electrolytes Manage your stress. DOCTOR’S ORDERS

Dr Lameze Witbooi opened her general medical practice in the Polo Village Offices in February this year. Leaving everyone she encounters in a better way than when she found them, is what drives this 38-year old philanthropist. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

Q A

What led to opening a practice on Val de Vie Estate? I decided to start my own practice as I was unable to honour my personal mission in the environments where I previously worked. The focus, I felt, was on quantity and not on quality of care and I could not conform to these practices. Subsequently, I started doubting how I was applying all that I had learnt on my journey to becoming a doctor. This led me to making a change in my career and opening my own medical practice where I could take hands with my patients and the community and offer quality care.

Q A

What is the story behind the practice name ‘Apple a Day’? It is a play on the age-old health aphorism, and a fun way of relaying my belief and passion in public health medicine and prevention. Prevention plays a role at every stage of an illness. Primary prevention when one wants to prevent an illness and secondary prevention when the illness is diagnosed, and one wants to prevent complications. Tertiary prevention is required when complications arouse and to prevent morbidity.

Q

Being qualified as general practitioner, do you carry any special interest outside your core qualifications?

A

I am experienced in clinical trial investigations (research medicine in the communicable infectious disease fields of HIV/ AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) prevention and treatment). In this research environment I was also exposed to the concept of youthfriendly health care services. From the HIV/AIDS clinical trial environment, I progressed to the treatment aspect of HIV/ AIDS when I worked at the City of Cape Town Health Care Clinics. I started at one clinic base, then progressed to roving doctor where I was responsible for six clinics in a region. This experience also introduced me to the education aspect of medicine. I was able to teach at the quarterly HIV/ AIDS management course and present cases at the monthly multi-drug resistant TB meeting at Stellenbosch University Tygerberg Medical Campus. I am certified in and performed voluntary male medical circumcisions, an experience that exposed me to the social and cultural aspects that impact the health of men, an area that is very much neglected in modern fields of medicine. I am also an experienced midwife. I worked at night in a labour ward to fund part of my medical studies.

Taking the current circumstances of Covid-19 into consideration, what is the most important piece of advice you can give to the residents? Take care of your mental health during this time. Be careful what you feed your mind. Listen to the news only twice

Eat healthy and exercise. Use this time to reconnect with yourself and family. And, formulate a plan to maintain newfound closeness at the end of this period. This will come to an end. Did we not survive other great epidemics and pandemics before? We should not be concerned about surviving this. The concern should lie in whether we leave this period in the same state as before. If we manage to do so, we not only survive, but thrive.

I recall an incident as a student when we had to embark on a community project. We just learnt that hypertension was one of the top five burdens of disease and we decided to base our project on this. Armoured with the invincible foolishness of youth and confidence that we are medical students (and

therefore doctors and correct by default) we planned, executed and failed our project. We failed because we did not once ask the community what they thought they needed and would like to know. Water is what they needed. Even if we gave them all the antihypertensive medication in the world, how would they drink it? Even if they knew about healthy food, how would they wash it? Even when they exercised, must they collapse from dehydration after? It was an extremely humbling experience for me.

AGEING IS WITHIN OUR CONTROL

Prof Wayne Derman is Director and Chair of the Institute of Sport and Exercise Medicine at Stellenbosch University. On 20 February he enlightened our residents with a talk on: ‘Growing older whilst staying young.’ WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

‘‘E

xercise pours out favourable hormones and has an antiinflammatory impact on the body. Of course the heart benefits from exercise, but more importantly, the veins and arteries are relaxed and this causes blood pressure to drop,” remarks Prof Derman. “It’s like sprinkling ‘bounce-back’ on the brain. Exercise produces an insulin-like growth factor and allows neurons to grow and branch, restoring mental function.” It comes as no surprise that regular exercise (5 times a week for 30 minutes at a time) has shown to decrease the risk of dementia and acts as a very effective antidote for depression. Combined with

There are daily choices we make that give “ us a great deal of control over our wellbeing. Sadly, South Africans don’t fare too well in this endeavour and we are reaping the unhealthy and unhappy results.

healthy choices in terms of our diets and the environment we live in, we can radically change our quality and length of life. Prof Derman explained that conditions like our genetics and factors like infectious diseases – Covid-19 for example – attribute to our length of life, but we can exert a great deal of control over our wellbeing simply by altering our lifestyle choices. Risk factors such as tobacco use, excess alcohol use, poor diet, hypertension, physical inactivity, obesity, high blood sugar and high cholesterol lead to chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung disease and diabetes.

So, what can we do about it? n SITTING. No amount of exercise can mitigate the impact of six hours or more of sitting every day. The key is to always interrupt your sitting – at least every half hour – by activating your body in some way. n SWEATING. Regular physical activity plays an important role in reducing and attenuating stress. Exercise has also shown to increase the synthesis of new nerve cells in the adult brain. Exercise interventions for optimal health include the accumulation of 150 minutes of moderate intensity (brisk walking) aerobic type exercise a week. Two sessions per week of resistance training is also recommended. n SLEEPING. Sufficient quality and quantity of sleep is necessary for restoration and strengthening. n WE ARE WHAT WE EAT. And we tend to eat too much. Cutting your daily total calorie intake by 20%, simply by decreasing your portion size by a quarter of what you normally take, is not only an effective way to lose weight but also a powerful antiageing intervention.

Individuals who are regularly physically active have: * A 30-45% LOWER RISK OF EARLY DEATH * UP TO A 35% LOWER RISK OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE AND STROKE * UP TO A 50% LOWER RISK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES * UP TO A 50% LOWER RISK OF COLON CANCER * UP TO A 20% LOWER RISK OF BREAST CANCER * UP TO AN 83% LOWER RISK OF OSTEOARTHRITIS * UP TO A 68% LOWER RISK OF HIP FRACTURE * A 30% LOWER RISK OF FALLS (AMONG OLDER ADULTS) * UP TO A 30% LOWER RISK OF DEPRESSION * UP TO A 30% LOWER RISK OF DEMENTIA * SOURCE: NHS

DEFINING SEASONS

While we are staying mostly indoors, outside the deciduous trees are shedding leaves and a chill has crept into the air. Winter brings dramatic change to our surroundings. But it can also be a season for introspection as we retreat from the world, seeking comfort and tranquillity. Different stages of our lives are replicated in the seasons and as we manoeuvre through this uncertain time may we remember that no season lasts forever.
