ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT

NEW YEAR NEW HUE Yes, the year of 2020 is upon us and as you settle into this autumn issue of the Grapevine, we will already be almost a quarter of the way through it and the festive season break will be a distant memory. W O R D S B Y T E R R Y K E L L E R , E S TAT E M A N A G E R

F

or the Estate Management team, the early part of the year is highlighted by the preparation of the annual budgets, and the departmental managers are hard at work planning how to extract the best efficiencies and values from the resources available to them, whilst aiming to keep budget increases within realistic and reasonable parameters. As always,

6 GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2020

the three big areas - landscaping, security and infrastructure maintenance are high priorities. With each passing year, the need to upgrade and replace aging infrastructure and equipment gains momentum and this year will be no different. The internal link road connecting The Yard Boulevard to Pearl Valley

was opened in mid-December and has been very well received by residents. This link saves a tremendous amount of time when moving from the one side of the Estate to the other and makes the Berg River gate a much more accessible option for residents on the Pearl Valley side. At the time of writing, the civil works have been largely completed and we are awaiting installation of the access booms and road signage. The final stage of the project – landscaping of the adjacent areas – is expected to be completed during March and April, after the heat of summer

FLAG HERE

has died down a bit. No doubt the link road will lead to increased utilisation of the facilities at The Yard as well as making the Pearl Valley Clubhouse more accessible to residents on the Val de Vie side of the Estate. With the drought finally broken in this area of the Western Cape, 2020 will see a renewed focus on aspects of the Estate landscaping that have taken a beating over the past two years. Understandably the inability of individual residences to irrigate during the period of severe water restrictions led to a marked deterioration in most gardens and verges. With regards to the common areas and verge

trees, these were carefully irrigated with the water allocation that was available to ensure they made it through the drought. Drakenstein Municipality has since announced significant easing of the water restrictions, with the effect that garden irrigation can now take place with automated irrigation systems and hand-held hoses on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, before 10am and after 4pm. With the lifted restriction level and greatly reduced water tariffs, it is once again time to start getting our gardens back on track. In closing, I would like to encourage each resident, young and old, to make use of the

wonderful facilities on the Estate. Over December, the French National track cycling team made Val de Vie Estate their base for a training camp for the upcoming World Championships and the Olympic games later this year. These young athletes stayed in the Pearl Valley Hotel operated by Mantis and split their training between track sessions in Belville, road sessions around Paarl and gym sessions at The Yard. It is inspiring to see world class athletes training and reminds one how fortunate we are to call Val de Vie Estate home. Till next time, may 2020 be your best year yet!

THE GIFT OF GIVING

12 GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2020

Nothing says Christmas more than excited faces experiencing a world beyond their wildest imaginations. Last Christmas, the Val de Vie Foundation was able to touch the lives of deserving Mbekweni children and a diverse group of choristers from the PaarlWellington area. WORDS BY LORRAINE H A D F I E L D, VA L D E V I E F O U N D AT I O N A D V I S O R

THE WONDER OF CHRISTMAS: REWARDING SPORTSMANSHIP ON AND OFF THE FIELD

P

artnering with Hope Through Action’s Mbekweni Centre in Paarl, 2019’s Val de Vie Foundation Christmas Party hosted 20 specially selected 8-13 year olds at the Wonderdal Edutainment Centre at Hazendal Wine Estate. Taking a holistic approach, Wonderdal combines high-tech and virtual reality games with interactive work and play areas. The excitement built from the bus ride out of Mbekweni to the beautiful Stellenbosch winelands and then on to lunch, followed by over an hour of edutainment at Wonderdal and interactive reading, then meeting

Father Christmas for presents of backpacks with age appropriate isiXhosa books. Who knew that learning could be so much fun?

frying and blending. The Amuki provided feedback and taught their human friends how to create a balanced meal.

Wonderdal develops children’s fine and gross motor skills, as well as problem solving, and critical and creative thinking skills. The Amuki lead the young trailblazers through an awe-inspiring journey of discovery starting at Kora’s Gate, the entrance to Wonderdal.

The Mbekweni group then gathered in the cosy nooks of the Story Cave, taking a break from the buzzing activity of Wonderdal. They listened to educational audio stories on the adventures of the Amuki and were entranced to be read to by Faye Kropf, Val de Vie Estate homeowner, from a Wonderdal library book.

As they passed through the gate, they met their Amuki guide by activating their magical bracelet. A wondrous journey started… First at the magnificent Kora, the Tree of Light, which grows in the middle of Wonderdal; by playing a physical hand-cycling game, they generated motion energy. The next stop was the Tinker Workshop, sheltered by Tinker Trees, offered the opportunity to experiment with different kinds of energy and engage in tinkering activities. The Wind Tunnel then gave them the opportunity to play engineer and explore the aerodynamics of their own designs. From the Tinker Workshop they travelled to the Wonder Garden where the children encountered a fully immersive digital landscape that provided a fantastical experience of how plants grow. They played gardener and grew different imaginary plant types.

Beyond Wonderdal the last of the adventures awaited: The Wildlands. Here the children stretched their legs in the innovative outdoor play area and engaged in various physical activities. We are so grateful to Hope Through Action and Wonderdal for making this happen. Thank you too for all your assistance Faye. Truly a day of fun and learning to remember for us all..

I will honour Christmas in my heart and try and keep it all the year. CHARLES DICKENS

VAL DE VIE FESTIVE MARKET

T

he Val de Vie Foundation, Paarl Valley Eisteddfod Choir and guests at the November 2019 Val de Vie Festive market joined together to celebrate the

spirit of Christmas with the singing of carols. Fresh off their incredible debut at An Evening with Ronan Keating Event, the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod choir again delighted Val de Vie with their repertoire of Christmas Carols. These young choristers, led by Courtrai Choir Director Caren Bosman, enchanted all with their sweet harmony. The evening ended on a high note with the “Click Song.” A lovely memory of a special evening from a truly diverse choir showcasing the best our Valley has to offer. We at the Val de Vie Foundation are honoured to have been the catalyst in the formation of this special choir.

K

atlego Ngwane, Val de Vie Estate homeowner, successful entrepreneur, mother and ardent supporter of the Val de Vie Foundation, is truly a rainbow in the cloud that is life for so many. Together with New Orleans Secondary School teacher Meagan Paulse, they devised an outreach program for the school. Just under 150 needy learners were invited to complete a questionnaire on why they should be recipients of the program. Questions included academic results, family income, attendance levels and personal requirements. Thirty fortunate young learners received packs of school shoes, socks, uniforms, 14 GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2020

stationery and sanitary pads for the girls. Katlego said she was inspired to invest in these young people because: “January is difficult for many parents, given the expense of uniforms and stationery. As a parent myself and knowing that many kids in our country do not attend school because they lack the basic things they need, I wanted to assist them in being the best they can be.”

Our learners and parents are so grateful. May this initiative grow from strength to strength MEAGAN PAULSE

The things we often take for granted, someone else is praying for. The Val de Vie Foundation is so grateful for residents like Katlego. You make us so proud. Thank you.

BRINGING OUR ‘A’ GAME The year ahead is about consolidating and enhancing our product offering, operating smarter than ever in the way we retain business and attract new golfers while controlling our expenses. The personal touch is key to our experience and we will be focusing hard on this element of our culture. W O R D S B Y D A M I A N W R I G L E Y, P E A R L VA L L E Y C L U B GENERAL MANAGER

On the course

T

he year has gotten off to a flying start as we are now fully into our busy season of the club. We have certainly had some intense winds sweep their way through our Valley taking down several trees in the process. Despite the challenging weather conditions our course maintenance team have kept their fingers on the pulse to ensure our golfers receive the best playing surfaces. We experienced a healthy mix of events, member rounds and corporates in 2019 and we are pleased 16 GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2020

with the year we have had. Forecasts indicate that we should close out the financial year on just over 2000 rounds less than what we budgeted on. This is something I am really pleased about. On the revenue side we are well on track to hit budget even with less rounds being played. Building strong relationships with our tour operators has seen growth in this segment of the market. A decision to go to the International Golf Market in Marrakech last year was also a key step to growing our visitor and tour operator rounds. This year the IGTM

will be hosted in Wales at Celtic Manor and we are already starting the planning for this one.

Golf Digest in town Earlier this year it was a great pleasure for the Estate to host the International Editor of Golf Digest Magazine, Mr. Ju Kuang Chang. Part of his reason for visiting the country is to look at a few of the top courses as possible entries into the International Top 100 courses of the world. It is a great honour to be considered for this prestigious list of courses. MARCH 2020 | GRAPEVINE 17

Member Range Our member range is looking great. The grass banks have grown in and the turf has knitted well. The decision was made to use bent and cynoden, making it super hardy. The real show piece that is going to make this member range special is the shading structure on wheels which has been a big project that we took on as it is a prototype which we designed and built onsite. A decision was also made to have an automated ball dispenser unit giving Full Golf members the freedom to serve themselves but also give better control to nonmembers using the facility. Our Junior Programme has now launched for the year and Adrian Buchner is doing one outstanding job here. Resident member Reghard Goussard is also assisting both Adrian and Jaco Coetzee, our Golf Manager, with sponsorship initiatives and planning. It is wonderful to have the teaching component as part of our in-house offering with James Wade as our resident Head Professional and Director of Instruction. There is plenty planned for this year and we view golf as one of our wellness pillars on the estate.

Upcoming events Last year we were proud hosts of the BCX Supersport Shootout. A two-year contract was signed with them, so we are to host it again in May of this year. As last year was our first time hosting the event, we learnt a 18 GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2020

great deal from it. Going into this year we will be sure to give better communication to all residents and will make sure we include you in many of the decisions and logistics around the event. A special member event will take place on the Tuesday the 12th of May. The winner of that day will place in the exclusive supplier’s day on Wednesday the 13th of May which Shoona Burman won last year. There will also be two spots up for auction at this year’s Captain’s Charity to play in this prestigious event.

Clubhouse One area of the club that is in need of a little attention is our Signature Lounge. It has been a wonderful addition to the club for dinners and smaller functions but lacks as a space for golfers to enjoy after their game. The plan for this space is to look at softer and more inviting furniture, have a small service bar offering members their favourites and embrace the beautiful outside area. The men’s locker room is also in need of a little facelift as it has been some 15 years since much was done there. Last year we managed to find the time to do the ladies locker room space, so the men’s side needs to follow suit. Until next time.

OUR JACK NICKLAUS STATUE NEAR COMPLETION

BEARING GOLD

Widely considered as one of the greatest golfers of all time, Jack Nicklaus celebrates his 80th birthday this year. To commemorate this milestone, a statue of ‘The Golden Bear’ will be placed at the Pearl Valley Clubhouse. WORDS BY THE GRAPEVINE TEAM

T

he name Jack Nicklaus is synonymous with greatness in the sport of golf. In a career spanning five decades, this legend is one of only five golfers – Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tiger Woods the others – who have won all four of golf’s modern majors, referred to as the “Career Grand Slam.” The legacy Jack has left as a professional golfer is rivalled only by the legacy he is leaving as golf course designer, businessman and philanthropist.

A round of golf on our Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course is bound to rank high on the list of any golfer. Created by one of the world’s greatest sportsmen, the name Nicklaus has long been associated with greatness on the golf course and represents superior golf course design. No other design firm has produced more world-ranked or championship golf courses than Nicklaus Design, the industry leaders.

THE GOLF LEGEND WITH MARTIN VENTER AND RYK NEETHLING

A Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course is the highest tier of design offering from Nicklaus Design and features the most extensive involvement by Jack Nicklaus, who personally directs all design-related issues and serves as promotional spokesman for the course. Jack Nicklaus opened the course on 17 November 2003, commenting:

WELLNESS

FROM “ME” TO “WE”

A community is established when people form connections with each other through experiences, habits, like minded interests, goals and trust. At Val de Vie Estate, a great deal of focus is placed on community enriching platforms that address our wellness. W O R D S B Y T H E G R A P E V I N E T E A M

T

he Global Wellness Institute defines “community” as: a group of people living in close proximity who share common goals, interests and experiences in proactively pursuing wellness across its many dimensions. A wellness community shares a certain type of lifestyle and a culture that connects people with one another. In this day and age, to feel a true sense of belonging is critical to our wellness, because the people around us can have a direct influence on our behaviour, perspective and lifestyle.

A HAND UP, NOT A HANDOUT The old adage ‘charity begins at home’ is prevalent in the role our homeowners play in the Val de Vie Foundation. Funded through 1% of Val de Vie Estate’s land sales, 5% of all monthly levies raised from Val de Vie Phase II developments and the option for Val de Vie Phase I and Pearl Valley residents to contribute to the monthly levy donation, the Val de Vie Foundation funds youth and leadership development in our Valley. Other fund-raising initiatives such as the annual Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day and requests for donations through Vision Box and The Clothing Bank, are wholeheartedly supported by our homeowners. A COMMUNITY HUB At the heart of the Estate is The Yard, a multi-purpose facility where various community related activities take place on a daily basis. A couple of very hot summer afternoons over the last few months have seen the 50m outdoor pool being utilised by young and old. Fitness inspiration continues to be found in the 1000m² gym where 7-days-a-week access is available at no additional cost to residents.

THE DIGITAL AGE A number of social media platforms exist where Val de Vie Estate residents have the opportunity to network amongst one another; sharing resources, asking for advice and engaging in communication on an open platform. Val de Vie Estate manages the ‘Val de Vie Neighbours’ and ‘Val de Vie Evergreen Neighbours’ Facebook pages and we request all residents to join the relevant platforms. The Community Portal, operated by the HOA, exists for the purpose of effectively communicating with all residents and provides a platform for sharing the most up-to-date information. Les Aupiais, editor of Val de Vie Magazine, describes community as: Real community, people who know you by “ name, by habit; people you choose to spend face-time with, who greet your kids; people who walk your dogs for you and give you a quick call about the leaking tap they spotted when they jogged past your home? That’s unusual and a concept that seems to be lost in translation in our guarded lives.

e are mid-season in 2019/2020 polo and it has been fantastic! Pink Polo presented by Biomedical Emporium was a huge success, albeit a nail-biting affair going into extra and time giving both players and spectators an incredible insight to what our amazing sport of kings has to offer. Thank you to all who shared this special day with us. A Western Cape team represented by Charl Du Plessis, Marek Kanigowski, Jannie Steenkamp and Captain fantastic George Morgan was selected to take on a team from Plettenberg Bay Polo to play for the Labia cup. The Cup dates back to 1936 with enormous history of polo players and teams and it is a very special honour to do battle for this wonderful trophy. Three of the four players from the Val de Vie Polo Club were included in the team and the young

and talented Marek Kanigowski from Cape Town Polo Club. The match was a thriller, ending in a draw with the decider taking place on home turf at Val de Vie in March 2020. The Veuve Clicquot Polo Series Invitational on the 1st of March 2020 promises to be another riveting match and event, attracting some of the best players in the country blended with our local top talent - a recipe for a polo block buster. T SUPERDAY

The second edition of Torpedo Val de Vie took place on Saturday 1 February. The Torpedo Series is the South African version of the popular and fast-growing emerging global sport of SwimRun. W O R D S B Y T H E G R A P E V I N E T E A M

orpedo Val de Vie is a blue-grade race - meaning individual and non-wetsuit compulsory - and is seen as the perfect preparation for the harder black-grade races held in Cape Town and Wilderness in the latter half of the year. The route at Val de Vie Estate took athletes on an adventurous 11km course around our Estate, featuring six swims across separate lakes as a highlight. The women’s race was won by Vicky van der Merwe from Stellenbosch who flew home in 8th overall with a time of 1:01:13. In the men’s race, Nick Quenet continued his SwimRun dominance with an almost 10-minute lead to win in a time of 48:54. It was not only the professional athletes out enjoying the event, the focus was on the hundreds of social athletes that take to the course to challenge themselves and enjoy this new sport. They ran, walked, jumped and swam through the delightfully hot Cape Winelands. Each swim had water safety and support and a Powerbar waterpoint at the midway point brought welcome relief. The heat on the runs made the cooling-off swims all the more enjoyable and smiles and celebrations were aplenty on the finish line. The day was a huge success, not only for the athletes but also for their friends and families who enjoyed the festivities on offer at the start and finish venue - The Yard. Coinciding with Val de Vie Super-Saturdays, they enjoyed the 50m swimming pool, Reuben’s & Co Cafè, Pilates, Hip Hop dancing, football and a rugby clinic.

GARDENS

BACK TO THE ROOTS As our nights become longer and cooler weather sets in, we know that autumn has arrived. For garden enthusiasts there are quite a few tasks on the “to do list during this season of change. W O R D S B Y R U A N D U P L E S S I S

C

ontrary to popular belief, plants actually grow during autumn and winter, but instead of spending energy on new leaves, flowers or fruit, they focus on establishing more roots. The soil temperature is still quite warm after the summer, therefore newly planted trees and shrubs can easily secure their roots. Roots will continue to grow throughout the winter, despite the fact that there are few or no leaves at all. By planting trees and shrubs now you can rest assured that the roots are well established by the time spring comes! I group most fynbos plants in the shrubs category. This is the perfect time to add new plants to your garden.

GLADIOLUS ALATUS

GLADIOLUS GRACILIS

Bulbs and seedlings will also be readily available at your local nursery. A few of my favourite bulbs include: Allium, Anemone, Freesia, Gladiolus, Iris, Lachenalia, Ornithogalum, Narcissus, Ranunculus and Sparaxis. Bulbs love good soil and adding lots of well-rotted manure is a must! Stagger planting of the Anemone and Ranunculus corms for a longer flowering period. Now is also the time to sow Poppies, Sweet peas, Lobelias and Namaqualand daisies.

LACHENALIA ORCHIOIDES

GARDENS

PRUNING AND TRIMMING I often get asked when major pruning should take place. Although some indigenous plants love to get chopped right back in autumn, I would not suggest harsh pruning on trees and shrubs. The last thing you want is to encourage new growth and shoots which will be damaged by the cold winter weather. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself when the plant you want to prune has its main flowering period. If it is two seasons away, then prune away, anything closer and I would advise on less cutting.

TRANSPLANTING Autumn is the ideal time to divide and replant perennials, thereby ensuring flowering in summer.

DISEASES AND PESTS Fungi | Mildew, rust and powdery mildew are just a few of the fungal infections that are rife just before winter. Treat preventatively, but if fungus is already prevalent, apply a systemic fungicide to prevent the fungi from spreading. n

TO FERTILIZE OR NOT TO FERTILIZE With new plantings, it’s important to stimulate root development by applying a highphosphate or 2.3.2 fertiliser. Steer clear of anything with high Nitrogen levels. Fertilise your entire garden, including your lawn, bulbs and seedlings, every four weeks with an organic fertiliser containing the three most important nutrient elements: Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P) and Potassium (K). Look for

one that also contained many of the important microelements that plants require for healthy growth, such as Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) and Barium (B) to name but a few. Zinc is especially important as it assists plants to resist the low temperature. Consider something like chicken manure pellets. These products are both organic as well as the added benefit of not being strong enough to “burn” your plants.

58 GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2020

Insects | Snails and slugs can cause havoc in your seedling and bulb garden beds. Get rid of these munching molluscs by applying an organic snail bait in the late afternoon. n

Ants are everywhere collecting food for the winter. To ensure that they do not hibernate in your lawn, you can get rid of them by applying an ant control agent. Certain products will destroy the nest, including the queen, within a few days. Treat the rest of your garden with a systemic insecticide that should keep insects at bay until the start of winter. Use a product that not only controls mole crickets, but also a variety of aphids and is extremely effective against the dreaded Italian cypress aphid. Do not let the approaching winter give you cold feet when it comes to gardening. Use the last warm days to enjoy the vibrant hues of changing colours in our gardens, but also prepare for the winter and spring. I leave you with Virginia Woolf’s thoughts about autumn. all the lives we ever lived and all the lives “toAnd be are full of trees and changing leaves. ”

FLOWER IMAGES: SIMON ALLEN

LAWNS Start to cut the lawn shorter by setting the mower blades to the lowest setting. This will encourage growth before the harsh winter season. Cooler temperatures mean there is more moisture in the ground which allows lawns to recover slightly after the hot and dry summer. You still need to feed your lawn this time of the year for a lush, green autumn lawn.

A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

On the 24th of January Green School South Africa celebrated its official launch. This double-medium (Afrikaans/ English), international school, located about 400m from Val de Vie Estate’s Bergriver gate promises to be a progressive school with sustainability at its core. W O R D S B Y T H E G R A P E V I N E T E A M

G ... I have visited many different places and many schools but Green School is the most unique & impressive school I have ever visited. BAN KI-MOON

reen School was started in Bali, Indonesia in 2008 and it is now expanding to New Zealand (opening Feb 2020), South Africa (Jan 2021) and Mexico (Sept 2021) as a starting point, with future expansion opportunities in the US, UK, Spain, Mauritius, Cyprus and Singapore under consideration.

Green School’s curriculum is the result of a systematic referencing of the best of international education: British, American, New Zealand and Singapore to name but a few. The school will have a strong academic foundation, and as a minimum meet the standards of the South African curriculum, but it is in its teaching methodology and approach to assessment that it will be significantly different. “Imagine a school where innovation,

60 GRAPEVINE | MARCH 2020

curiosity and learning flourish. A school in which each child’s unique talents are not only recognised but nurtured. A school that is serious about its academic standards but is a joyful place, one where the laughter of children fills the open spaces. We want to ensure that our children really understand the concepts rather than simply memorising facts to score marks. Yes, there will be maths and spelling tests, but we are more concerned about creating a love of writing and mastering the ability to solve real life problems with the mathematical skills they have mastered.” – Andy Wood, Head of Green School The school is planning to open its doors from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Tours with a food focus are one of the best ways to get to know a culture. It’s not just about local flavours that are impossible to imitate back home, but the immersive experience of food focused travel.

SECURITY

REST ASSURED

Ranked by New World Wealth as the Top Residential Estate in South Africa in 2019 is a huge accolade for our security team. One of the main reasons for families moving to Val de Vie Estate is the fact that true peace of mind is afforded to every resident and our team takes great pride in upholding this sense of safety. W O R D S B Y L O U I S D E J A G E R , S E C U R I T Y A N D R I S K M A N A G E R

W

e started 2020 with processes of enrolment and re-enrolment, especially in the context of contractors, which for the second year running has proven to be a great success. Alleviating long queues and stress factors at the gates, this is but one facet of the

overall and holistic improvements and innovations we have been able to introduce proportionate to the exponential growth of numbers on the estate. This, combined with our ongoing security efforts, is what has earned us the reputation as the safest estate in South Africa - an honour

which spurs us on to do even better in 2020 as challenges will most certainly not become less. We are very fortunate to have assembled a solid, efficient and committed core security team over the years and I do not think there is much that could come our way that we will not be able to deal with. The security staff are doing a sterling job but they are sometimes the target of verbal abuse from angry visitors and residents, which is most unfortunate and unacceptable by any decent standards and won’t be tolerated. We look forward to being of service to our valued residents in 2020.
