ESTATE MANAGER’S REPORT Warm greetings for 2018 and welcome to this edition of the Grapevine. The festive season is now a distant memory and without a doubt this year will be even busier than last with the estate expanding at a rapid rate. WORDS BY TERRY KE L L E R

“Having our own water supply in no way means that we can become complacent.”

“When is it going to rain?” and “day zero” have dominated discussions of late. With what appears to be a final realisation on the part of Capetonians - that there is a problem and water has to be conserved - people’s mind-sets and habits have changed. It is clear that this crisis could have been avoided with proper planning. The indications of a looming problem with water supply in the Western Cape have been around for years and it has taken threats of “day zero” to get some action. This leads me to why residential estates remain a sought-after option for South Africans. There is a perception that people move onto estates because of security, yes, that is one reason, and an important one. However, there are many other reasons, and possibly the greatest reason is that residential estate communities control their own destiny. Like minded people living in a community have the ability to plan for their future to ensure that their current, as well as their future needs, are catered for. This is precisely what Val de Vie Estate has done in addressing the water crisis. With foresight and planning the trustees rallied together to approve a plan to make the estate self-sufficient, and move off the water grid. A professional team was engaged to commission an emergency water treatment plant that had to come online in December 2017.

Utilising the healthy aquifer network deep underground, borehole water is pumped through the treatment plant and high-quality drinking water is supplied to the residents. The interesting part of the whole exercise is that the treatment plant is available “off the shelf” and did not need to be built from scratch, the technology is available right here in Cape Town. While we all wish to remain positive that “day zero” will not arrive, residents of Val de Vie Estate can take comfort in the fact that their taps will not run dry. We can be proud that we have a group of trustees with vision and a will to find a solution to a problem that has not yet been addressed by the City of Cape Town. Having our own water supply in no way means that we can become complacent. We have an obligation to utilise water sparingly and we thank each and every resident for their cooperation in this regard. Val de Vie Estate is already making plans on how we can support our surrounding communities in the event of a “day zero”, just another example of not just looking after our future, but also those who will not have access to water when the taps are turned off.

PROPERTY REPORT The water crisis in the Western Cape has resulted in a sharp decline in demand from semigrants moving up country in January 2018. Val de Vie Estate has however been fortunate to continue attracting a high demand and our rental stock and developer stands for sale are almost depleted. Our on-site property sales team, Cape Winelands Properties, reports on the property market. WO R D S BY C A P E WIN E L A N D S P R O P E R T IE S

Our private water purification plant began operating as of 18th of December 2017 and this has ensured there will be no 'day zero' for our residents. It has also enabled us to assist Drakenstein Municipality with water for needy areas. Construction of the first phase of 81 homes at the Val de Vie Evergreen retirement village is expected to commence in February 2018. The first phase is now 50% sold out and enquiries are picking up steadily. Civil construction is well underway. The Val de Vie Evergreen life-right units start from R2,75m and offer a comprehensive retirement lifestyle in the heart of South Africa’s premier estate. The retirement village will consist of 400 free-standing homes, 208 apartments and an 80-bed comprehensive medical centre. The balance of developer stock is practically sold out with only the following opportunities remaining; • 1 x Pearl Valley golf stand (1231m2) • 4 x Pearl Valley nature stands (from 1200m2 – 1500m2) • 1 x Polo Village office block unit • 9 x La Vue I and II stands (from 900m2 – 2000m2) • 3 x Mouverdre plot-and-plan homes on La Vue (three bedrooms, double garage, single storey) • 3 x Bordeaux plot-and-plan homes on La Vue (three bedrooms, double garage, single storey)

I AM THE SOMEBODY! “ I always wondered why somebody did not do something about that, then I realised I am somebody.” There have been many benefits from the amalgamation of Val de Vie and Pearl Valley, not least of which is Val de Vie Foundation‘s ability to tap into the wonderfully talented and generous homeowners who live on our estate. In this edition of Grapevine we celebrate four such amazing residents who give so big-heartedly of their time. We also introduce a new segment on showcasing our partner Valcare, profile our longstanding relationship with Khula Development group and conclude by highlighting our work in youth development in facilitating elearning in Klapmuts Primary. The Val de Vie Foundation is delighted to support the school in their vision to bring E-Learning to the entire school. We will be purchasing tablets to be utilised in two dedicated classrooms which will focus on three subjects. Khula Development Group Khula’s mission is to integrate primary school children at risk of dropping out, back into the school system. The reintegration team of seven and 26 fieldworkers handle more than 890 cases in the Paarl- Franschhoek Valley. As poverty increases, social circumstances deteriorate and substance abuse and neglect of children is the order of the day. Unfortunately the drought has reduced the need for seasonal workers and the social circumstance of those living in the Valley. Khula offers one-on-one child counselling plus an in-school support programme in 12 local schools. Khula also works with parents or primary caregivers to provide basic parenting and life skills to care for the children. They also have piloted a program to promote school attendance. The Val de Vie Foundation is honoured to support such a dedicated group of full - and part time workers who truly understand the need to grow our children. They are always looking for volunteers and would be delighted to introduce you to what they do.

SUMMER SUNDAY The Bridge House Mile, now in its 5th year, was hosted at Val de Vie Estate on Sunday the 4th of February. The Bridge House Mile, proudly sponsored by Standard Bank, has gone from strength to strength since its inception. The introduction of an 800m swim challenged all levels of fitness and was perfectly suited for swimmers not yet ready for the mile (1.6 km), but needed something more challenging than the 400m or 200m swim. Our sales representatives from Cape Winelands Properties welcomed prospective buyers and guests at the Val de Vie Evergreen pop-up in the Polo Pavilion Ballroom, while guests enjoyed live music by Stellenbosch Indie Band Jackal & The Wind. Young ones were entertained by pony rides, jumping castles, face painting, craft and playdough making.

MEET SIMONE DE WET Introducing the Managing Director of Val de Vie Events. WORDS BY T HE G R A P E V I N E T E A M

1. Why did you start your own events company? My passion for people was the greatest reason behind starting Val de Vie Events. Any occasion where two or more people gather, I consider an event and worth celebrating. The core of Val de Vie Events is to serve people, and in this way to garner hope. It is the greatest privilege to be able to invest in the purpose and calling of others. We make dreams and visions come to life. 2. When did Val de Vie Events begin? On 18 October 2008, I was honored to coordinate the wedding of Martin and Lizelle Venter at Val de Vie Estate. Five months after their wedding, Val de Vie Events was birthed on the 1st of March 2009 and hundreds of celebrations and events have followed since. 3. Are all your events based at Val de Vie? Originally Val de Vie Events started out as an events management company that created events onsite at the various venues on Val de Vie Estate, however for the last five years we have been coordinating off-site projects all over our country. These events vary from product launches, private celebrations, destination weddings, corporate functions and international events such as Prince Harry’s Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup, Cell C Johannesburg Polo Classic, Moët Christmas Tree reveal at the V&A Waterfront, Moët Party Day, Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo, ELLE Boss Awards as well as an exclusive series of intimate events for Dom Perignon.

4. How big is the Events Team and what type of events do you do? The Val de Vie Events team with their servant hearted nature, is truly what makes Val de Vie Events what it is today. There are ten incredible people in the team, all gifted in various areas of the events industry. This is exactly the reason why we are able to cover such a vast range of functions. The power of the team comes from the unity between each other and the like minded approach to serve together in excellence and to steward the responsibility that we have been entrusted with. As I always say, there is no “I” in team. Teamwork truly makes the dream work. 5. You and your team host two world renowned annual Polo events at Val de Vie Estate. How did you go about getting the Headline Partners, Cintron and Veuve Clicquot on board? In 2010 I had a vision about Pink Polo and doing something creative for Breast Cancer, it had to however be done in such a way that it created awareness through a vocal platform for the cause. Seeing guests from all over the world attend the event is the ultimate dream come true. Cintron Pink Polo is celebrating its 9th year in 2018 and we remain proud to represent the legacy of giving back where there is a need for support. Headline sponsors get on board because they believe in the cause and envision the outcome for added brand value at the event.

EVENTS

SimonĂŠ and her team put together many awe-inspiring events nationally and international each year, such as the annual Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo.

Through various social media platforms and campaigns, we are able to reach a bigger and more diverse target audience, year after year. The Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo was birthed as a three-way venture between Val de Vie Events, Vivid Luxury and the Really Great Brand Company. Passion is what drives creativity when it comes to the brand and creating a social platform where people gather, dress up and celebrate each other in the beautiful Cape Winelands. The event has become a modern way of business networking and is the perfect opportunity for corporate entertainment as the hospitality caters for a world class experience.

6. What do you enjoy about working at Val de Vie? The leaders of Val de Vie is an inspiring group of visionaries. They have been the ultimate mentors to me as a young women starting off a business nine years ago. They have guided and assisted me in realising this dream that is growing daily. It’s like planting a dream in fertile ground and then being handed the tools to make it flourish! I love Val de Vie as it is such an incredible platform to instill core characteristics such as diligence and excellence. I love coming to the office because I consider the people in the Val de Vie Events team not only colleagues but as dear friends. What an honour to do life with them as it fills my day with so much joy and colourful, creative ideas that ultimately translates into world renowned events and projects.

“To every person reading this article who has attended and supported our events, the team wishes to extend a big thank you as this is not possible without the attendees, partners and suppliers.” In closing I would like to add that the events industry is not for the faint-hearted, and it truly means the world that my husband and children can share everyday life with me on Val de Vie Estate and be a part of the bigger picture. A NEWER YOU When Dr. Rolene and Ledivia Strauss decided to embark on a joined business venture, Val de Vie Estate was their first choice. At the first RevitaHealth Women’s Summit this dynamic duo spoke about the concept behind the RevitaHealth facility, the benefits of aesthetic medicine and becoming the best version of yourself. WORD S BY T HE G R A P E V IN E T E A M

Women of the Winelands region have been waiting for a top-end medical facility with highly qualified doctors and state of the art equipment that offer holistic wellness advice and intervention. RevitaHealth brings aesthetic, integrative, anti-ageing, regenerative and preventative medicine to Val de Vie Estate in June 2018. 34

D’Niel Strauss, brother of Ledivia and husband to Rolene, welcomed 160 guests to Val de Vie Estate and introduced the speakers. Guests travelled from far and wide and included the presence of Amy Kleinhans-Curd, former Miss South Africa. Dr. Ledivia Strauss has a list of qualifications too long to list.

As a qualified medical doctor, she moved to Narbonne, France with her husband where she became fluent in French and completed a postgraduate course in mesotherapy. “Mesotherapy is a process where areas that require cell renewal are injected with components to speed up the process. This can also be done to eliminate hair loss and improve the appearance of cellulite,” she explained. Ledivia shared advice on improving lifestyles and making use of available treatments that positively influence the way women see themselves, and ultimately their self-worth. The stigma of aesthetic treatments is that it is seen as “vanity”, not to mention the Hollywood stars who dramatically alter their appearance and become a secondary version of themselves. Ledivia explained that RevitaHealth treatments are non-surgical, non-invasive and aimed to discreetly turn back the clock. Treatments offered at RevitaHealth will include botox, derma fillers, mesotherapy, derma pen, skin resurfacing, thread lifting, laser hair removal, hormonal therapy, vitamin drips and advice on sexual health. Of particular interest is the epigenetic testing that uses your DNA to determine how your body responds to environmental triggers such as food, exercise, medicine and supplements. Dr. Rolene Strauss is a former Miss South Africa and Miss World, who chose the completion of a medical degree over lucrative offers from Hollywood, Bollywood and international modelling agencies. At only 25 years old, she is a qualified medical doctor and mother to a 13-month-old boy. Her inspirational message of ‘designing your future’ was an intimate glimpse into her own feelings of self-worth and disappointment. She shared a video that was created the first time she entered Miss South Africa,

showing a very young Rolene with massive potential, but in need of a bit of refinement. As an Afrikaans girl from the platteland, she knew she firstly required public speaking training in English. Once she had mastered this, she called in the services of stylist Werner Wessels and educated herself on improving her hair and makeup. A personal trainer assisted with a gym and diet programme. “Transformation takes time, and it is a process to become the best version of yourself,” explained Rolene. And what a transformation it has been. She is today a striking, confident, well-spoken young woman who has a passion for helping others make healthy choices, just like her sister-in-law Ledivia. Rolene will not be practicing as a medical doctor at RevitaHealth until she completes her internship and community service, her involvement is acting as brand ambassador. For more information, email info@revitahealth.co.za

Rolene’s Transformation Tips: 1. Know who you are 2. Ask a professional stylist to assist with a wardrobe revamp 3. Seek the advice of a qualified hair and make up artist to show you how to enhance your best features 4. Enroll for a health and fitness programme to shed excess weight and change your outlook on fitness 5. Your greatest aspiration should be bigger than your greatest fear – a life coach can help determine both 6. Visualise where you want to be in the next five years – see how your life has worked out exactly as you planned – and then go back to today and start making the changes required for this future dream to become a reality

POLO SEASON IN FULL SWING Our season thus far has once again been a great success with two tournaments successfully under the belt and players travelling from Plettenburg Bay, Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal to take part. WORDS BY ROB H A M P SON

The Patrons Cup in December was a 4-goal tournament which provided exciting and highly competitive polo throughout all the games. Black Harrier Polo were victorious over Cape Town Polo Club in an exceptionally close match that was tied at 5-5 right into the last 30 seconds of the game, where Jannie Steenkamp snuck through to score the winning goal (whilst playing the Best Playing Pony of the tournament, Pixel). It was an exceptional game of polo, which ended off a very exciting weekend of polo. January’s Chairman’s Cup held a record of eight teams in one section for a tournament - and highlighted the incredible growth that Val de Vie polo is providing for polo players in South Africa. With thirty-four playing members, around fifteen beginners playing educational chukkas on a Tuesday, of which eight are children, and just as many people taking lessons from our pros – the club is in a healthy position 38 GRAPEVI NE

and ready to take polo to the next level. The Chairman’s Cup Two goal tournament in January once again provided sensational polo, with Jannie Steenkamp playing for the victorious team, Bonhams. They beat a one goal (under-handicapped) Saxenburg team in the final, who had done an incredible job reaching the finals playing against two goal handicapped teams. We would like to thank both Wayne Hartley and Geoff Evennett for flying down for the tournaments and adding to the success thereof. Also to Justin Snaith for providing horses for Geoff at the Chairman’s Cup. Once again, the bicycle polo was a hit at the Bridge House Mile and the

Val de Vie Market on the 4th of February. The polo match was also a success, with an all-Bridge House student team playing against a Val de Vie invitational side. The Bridge House girls and boys were victorious, winning 5 - 4. The Harcourts Winelands | Luxury Properties Ladies Polo Tournament that took place between the 16th to 18th of February is the highest-level ladies tournament in Southern Africa. Players travelled from Argentina, Kenya, Zimbabawe, Zambia, and locally from Joburg and Plettenberg Bay to participate in the prestigious tournament.

The first six goal tournament of 2018, the Cape Classic, took place on the 22nd to the 25th of Feb. The tournament was followed by one of our season highlights, the Veuve Cliquot Masters Polo on the 3rd of March. Finally, our second six goal tournament, the Summer Cup, is taking place from the 7th to the 11th of March.

OUR RIDING FAMILY After a long Christmas break the Val de Vie Pony Club members are excited to be back with their ponies and teachers. A warm welcome to the new riders and ponies who have joined our equestrian family this year. WORDS BY ROSE M A RY B A RTL E T T

Our young riders have had a busy start to the year, with new ponies arriving at Val de Vie Estate. Coco Bean is Sienna’s first pony and we look forward to seeing their combined effort at local shows. Linnet travelled all the way from Gauteng to her new home here at Val de Vie Estate and her new owner Jemimah. We can see that Linnet and Jemimah are going to make a wonderful partnership and have lots of fun together. A special birthday wish is about to come true for one of our young riders, Mila, as her delightful pony Fabio will be moving from Noordhoek to live here at Val de Vie Estate. Mila who is about to turn six years old is going to have a wonderful surprise on her birthday morning! The hot, dry weather conditions have been a challenge, but instead of cancelling our lessons we are teaching the children to improve their grooming technique. Our horse grooms are undoubtedly the best in the polo business and our Endurance groom Thembelani certainly proves this in and out of the saddle. Thembelani recently competed in a 40km West Coast Endurance race and his second horse, ridden by Maureen, came in second place out of a large field of riders and horses. Once his stable chores are done, Thembelani and Maureen can be spotted riding most mornings, as they keep their horses fit for their next race. We are very excited to be moving to our newly built home at Val de Vie (behind the chukka clock) in March. With many fun activities planned, and welcoming new riders and ponies, we can't wait to see our equestrian family grow. We wish our new and existing riders all the best for the new year and remember no matter how bad your day may have been, it will get better once you get to the stables and your pony.

One area of noticeable improvement from the previous year is improved tee sheet management. The changes made in the make-up of the tee sheet allow us to not only achieve target but also to create a better flow on the course. Members have experienced fewer slow-paced rounds and our returning guests have complimented on the noticeable difference. Our outside line staff are thriving under the leadership of Jaco Coetzee and the training leading up to the season by RCA Consulting. We are at that time of the year where working conditions can be challenging, particularly on days reaching over 40 degrees Celsius. I would like to personally thank each and every member of our team that endure the heat with a smile on their face, day in and day out, continuously striving to be the best. 4 4 GRAPEVI NE

January brought some changes to the team as the Shop Manager, Johann Germishys, decided to pursue a career in Sports Management. We wish him well in his new venture. Terence Valentyn has years of golf retail experience and has stepped in to take charge of the shop and the day to day management of the team. Purchasing for the golf shop will continue to be done by Terence and myself. We are also very excited about a Signature Pearl Valley clothing collection that we are currently working on with our Marketing team. Our plan is to launch this line when the newly revamped shop opens on the 28th of April. The shop re-design is on track and the revamp will commence from the 16th of April, giving a fresh new look and allowing for better flow.

Our newly upgraded Golf and Events offices are now fully operational and both teams are feeling at home in their new space. The members and guests are starting to visit us and appreciated that we are more accessible to them. Our lounge was tastefully decorated by local Interior Designer, Mark Mathym of Toca Madera Interiors. We are really pleased with the work he has done and it’s amazing to see how a space can be transformed.

The question that is on many of our minds is: “how is the golf course surviving the current drought?”. There is no way to sugar coat the fact that we are feeling the effects. At the beginning of February the allocation for irrigation from the was ceased. Mike Westman, our Course Superintendent who has worked here for 15 years, mentioned that he has never seen the water in the Berg River stagnate. Read more on our 'water independent' estate in the Estate Managers Report.

‘I would like to personally thank each and every member of our team that endure the heat with a smile on their face.’

What does the current water situation mean for our golf course? Towards the middle of February, we turned off all rough-lined irrigation and focused only on the tees and greens. The playing experience will not be affected but the look and feel of the course will change. The good news is that we have a plan in place for the course and we will get to work on repairing the damaged or lost turf from April of this year.

We have exciting news to share regarding the food and beverage offering at The Valley restaurant. Further training and upskilling of existing staff is key to our vision and will enhance the experience received at the club by members and guests. New menu concepts and food offerings that meet a wide variety of tastes and desires will be created. In time, the halfway house and upstairs bar and kitchen will be given a facelift and supplied with upgraded equipment.

‘Shooting 62 here was one for the memory box and a day I will cherish forever.’

What is your earliest memory of golf? At six years old I played for the first time on a golf course in the South African Kids National event at Eagle Canyon. My dad was my caddy. When did my love of golf begin? Both my dad and grandfather played golf, and when I was a toddler I started joining my dad on the driving range. You can imagine that a two year old on a driving range could cause havoc, so my dad gave me clubs and golf balls to keep me occupied. I would hit balls while watching him play and from that I developed a mirror image – leading to my left-handed golf swing, although I am naturally right-handed. What has contributed to my most recent success? Half way through 2016 I decided to commit myself to golf again with the help of my friend and now coach Murray Smit. I was lucky enough to have him join the Swingfit Golf Academy as a coach. Murray and I have worked on an extreme training program to help me achieve my dream of eventually becoming one of the top players in the world. The main thing Murray and I have been working on recently is to focus on consistency through my swing by sticking to the same routine. This almost robotic repetitions has helped tremendously as it quickly became second nature, enabling me to perform to the best of my ability. I believe that this technique has allowed me to achieve my recent wins with back-to-back victories at the Wellington Open and the Theewaterskloof Open. I look forward to seeing how it reflects in my upcoming tournaments in March. Do you have any advice for younger players? Firstly - always have fun on the course and don’t make it a place that feels like hard work. Secondly, the way your run your life outside of the golf course will reflect on your

golf game. So, setting a familiar routine off-course will aid your scores on the course and help you to achieve success. Every negative blow that comes your way on or off the course shouldn’t be seen as a step backwards, but rather as another obstacle to get over - an obstacle that will make you better and stronger at the end of the day. Overcoming obstacles also helps in everyday life because it reassures that if you can get through the bad times, you will be able to perform any task under stressful conditions. What is your favourite club in golf bag and why? My 60° Lob Wedge. I have a good short game which helps me when my long game isn’t there. This enables me to still perform to a good standard. Most players use different clubs around the green, but since I was young I have learnt many different shots to play with my trusty lob wedge. What are your future goals and aspirations? I want to one day play in the European Tour and compete in the top ranks of the world. My more immediate aim is to turn professional in the coming years and to compete in the Sunshine Tour. We have an extremely competitive tour here in South Africa with incredibly talented players, which makes for the perfect place to refine my game and become a better golfer. How did it feel Shooting 62 at Pearl Valley? Amazing, especially because there was no placing and I had two bogeys on the card as well. Any person who has played at Pearl Valley will understand how difficult it can be, especially with the pace of the greens and the tight fairways. Shooting 62 here was one for the memory box and a day I will cherish forever.

WINES

VINTAGE YIELD It’s unimaginable that another year has flown by and we find ourselves in the midst of the new and challenging 2018 harvest season. Winemaker consultant Renier van Deventer offers an insight into what Val de Vie wine lovers can expect from the 2018 vintage. WO R D S BY R E N I E R VA N D E V E N T E R

The Cape Winelands region is experiencing its third consecutive very dry season and it is no surprise that the vineyards are struggling. The entire Western Cape region’s wine farms are in dire need of substantial rainfall to fill the surrounding dams and drench the farmland’s fertile soil. Grapes used to make Val de Vie wines are sourced from

many different areas, some which have been more affected by the drought than others. An interesting comparison between the quality and style of each region should offer further understanding of the effect of the dry season on future vintages. 5 5 G R A P EV I NE

WINES

‘The small amount of rain in the second week of February had a great impact on the vineyards and will help to pull them through towards the end of ripening.’

The harvest of 2018, two weeks later than anticipated, appears to be one with many varieties ripening at the same time and resulting in a very short but intense harvest. The production of exceptional quality wine, crafted from beginning to end, is possible because of upgrades completed at the L’Huguenot wine cellar. The harvest season started with sourcing of Pinotage and Chenin Blanc grapes from Paarl and Darling regions and also some Pinot Noir from Elim. The Bordeaux varieties arrived a bit later from Stellenbosch with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. The small amount of rain in the second week of February had a great impact on the vineyards and will help to pull them through towards the end of ripening. It will help especially with good colour and flavour development with the red wines. Overall it is still too early to make a call regarding the quality of both white and red varieties of the 2018 vintage, but in general we are optimistic about the quality of the produce that we have been taking in. The infamous aroma of the fermentation process lingers in the cellar and lifts our spirits in these extremely challenging conditions, looking forward to another year of making wine in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. Keeping in mind that it is not always about the destination but sometimes more about the journey, at L’Huguenot Vineyards we have a fun time living out our passion in making great quality wines. We are excited to introduce a couple of new wines to the Val de Vie and Polo Club wine ranges: • Val de Vie Valley of Life – Signature Red Blend 2014 @ R180 per bottle @ R1080 (case of 6) • Polo Club Memo (3 litre Chardonnay/Pinot Noir) Limited Release @ R395 • Val de Vie The Epic Blend 2016 @ R120 per bottle @ R720 (case of 6)
