KEEP OUT OF THE STABLES

All stables are private property and unauthorised entry is not allowed. Horses are large animals and are unpredictable, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries to both humans and horses.

OBSERVE HORSE CROSSINGS

Horses have right of way. At a horse crossing, stop at the red light and allow them to pass safely.

NO ENTRY AT PADDOCKS

Paddocks are strictly off-limits. Horses may kick, bite and accidentally trample a small child. Beware of potential injuries should they step on your foot.

BEWARE OF ELECTRIFIED PADDOCKS

Fences inside some paddocks are electrified to ensure horses remain secure. Avoid contact and proximity to these paddocks. CLIC

Driving Change The annual Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, hosted at the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course in October, was particularly noteworthy. This year’s event marked Pearl Valley’s 20th birthday, with a vintage golf theme to celebrate the milestone. Celebrities in attendance included Mark Boucher, Maps Maponyane, Jacques Kallis, Nico Panagio, Rolene Strauss, and Schalk Brits, to name but a few. All funds raised at the auction dinner were donated to Khula Developments to help create safe learning spaces for our most vulnerable and disadvantaged learners. Construction has already commenced on classrooms at Paarlzicht Primary and Orleansvale Primary. We thank every sponsor, partner, and golfer who made this day possible and contributed to such a worthwhile cause. Together, we are making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

MUMS ON A MISSION

Triple Love, a group of Val de Vie Estate mothers with children at Bridge House School, emerged during their weekly triples tennis matches. They united to form Triple Love, dedicated to enhancing the lives of those in our valley who are underresourced. One example of their initiatives is their collaboration with the Langrug Soup Kitchen NPO in Franschhoek, which provides 500 meals to children every week. Moving forward, Triple Love will be adding fruit to the kitchen to provide much-needed nutrition to the children. You can support this initiative by donating fruit or funds to Triple Love by contacting Jeanika Woolley via the Val de Vie Facebook page or by emailing jeanikaw@gmail.com. The Val de Vie Foundation and Triple Love are also challenging parents of schoolgoing children to donate stationery for the back-to-school period in January 2024. Look out for details of the ‘Back your Buddy to Study’ in January via the weekly newsletters, and let’s see which of our schools’ families can contribute the most. To end the year, Triple Love have planned a heartwarming Christmas party for 90 crèche-going children. They have funded the entire event, complete with gifts and their very own Father Christmas. The Val de Vie Foundation, in collaboration with Triple Love, will also donate funds to host a Christmas lunch in December at the Langrug Soup Kitchen NPO for their 500 children to help ensure they have a memorable Christmas. We look forward to working with this dynamic group, utilising your Val de Vie Foundation monthly levy to support essential initiatives for the remainder of the year and into 2024.

Strength in Numbers Humans, driven by instinct, are inherently social species. Given our physical limitations - we lack formidable teeth and strong claws - our primary defence mechanism lies in ‘safety in numbers’. While this strategy is not unique to humans, various social structures exist in the natural world that may seem peculiar to humans, but prove highly effective for the species that employ them. The simplest social group is the individual, as observed in species like the Cape grysbok. This solitary approach aids in predator evasion and reduces competition for food, which is particularly beneficial for grysboks that feed on the growing tips of plants. In certain plains antelope communities, dominant males become territorial, wihile female herds exhibit social behaviour. The misconception that solitary males have been ‘expelled’ from the herd is erroneous; they deliberately wait for the female herds to enter their territories. Young or elderly antelopes often form bachelor herds, distancing themselves from territorial males. Pair bonding occurs when two individuals, usually a male and a female, cohabitate. This bond can be either permanent or limited to a single breeding season. Raptors like the booted eagle exemplify a lifelong pair bond, ensuring both parents contribute to the demanding task of raising offspring.

BIRD OF THE MONTH

The more familiar family group comprises a bonded pair and their offspring, a temporary arrangement in some species, while in others, like the Cape fox, previous offspring may stay to assist in raising new generations. This delayed dispersal could be attributed to the younger individuals lacking the strength to establish territories of their own. When several related families stay in a group, forming a clan, parallels can be drawn to historical human societies. Clans can be matriarchal, led by the oldest and wisest female, as seen in elephants, or patriarchal, with the oldest and strongest male as the leader. Humans, remarkably adaptable, have evolved our social systems over the ages to align with changing lifestyles. Despite not having family nearby, forging connections with neighbours, fellow residents, and engaging in various social clubs and gatherings goes a long way in making one's life more varied and exciting in the Valley of Life.

Dazzling Dikkops The “Burhinus” genus, colloquially known as thick-knee, stone-curlew, or "dikkop", comprises medium-sized terrestrial waders ranging from 32 cm to 59 cm. While these birds are typically found in semi-arid to arid, open environments, some members of the genus are also associated with water. Unmistakable with their dappled plumage and huge yellow eyes, these unusual waders are predominantly nocturnal, with two species fairly common on our nature-friendly Estate, the spotted thick-knee and water thick-knee. Did you know? Reddish-grey musk shrews are native to sub-Saharan Africa. They measure between seven and 11 centimetres.

Despite their small size, they play a vital role in the ecosystem, controlling insect populations and serving as a food source for larger predators.

Their burrowing activities can aerate and improve soil quality in their habitats.

Reddish-grey musk shrews are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night, which helps them avoid some daytime predators.

Beautifully complementing the Estate’s 300 hectares of parks, fynbos, lakes and a wildlife reserve, the heart of the competition lies in the diversity of each garden. From drought-resistant landscapes that honour the region's unique ecology to vibrant, colourful spaces that showcase the beauty of a diverse plant species – every garden tells a unique story. Residents came together at an award ceremony hosted by L’Huguenot Vineyards and received prizes from sponsors Agrimark, Protek, D'Vine Gardens & Landscaping and Cosmafolia. Sharing is Caring Sela Vie has launched a delicious new dinner menu with a fresh focus on shared plates, encouraging diners to savour the joy of communal dining. Each dish is a work of art, expertly prepared with the finest, locally sourced ingredients presented with an imaginative twist under the guidance of Head Chef Jarryd Morris. New plates include risotto served with prawns and spicy chilli oil; roasted pork belly with a miso glazed celeriac, mirin pickled apple and a burnt apple purée; chicken roulade with a smoked mushroom mousse, honey butter baby carrots, crispy kale and a smoked jus; smoked beetroot tartare served with grilled asparagus, goats cheese cream and herb oil; crispy Asian noodle salad and duck phyllo parcels served with egg noodles, stir-fried vegetables and citrus with a hoisin and stout dipping sauce. The restaurant also serves incredible charcuterie, with cheese and meat boards, presented with a selection of seasonal fruit, preserves, crackers and marinated olives. For the kids, there are dinnertime favourites such as chicken strips, burgers and mac and cheese to choose from. An innovative dessert menu changes weekly, led by Head Pastry Chef Belinda Ferus, but includes delights such as milk tart meringue, banoffee pie and crème Catalan. Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a unique dining experience, Sela Vie’s beautiful surroundings, cosy ambience and attentive service make it the ideal place for sharing delightful dishes and creating memorable moments.
