West Sacramento Foundation All Charities Dinner drew great results for local organizations

By Monica Stark editor@news-ledger.com

The West Sacramento Foundation hit another all-time high at this year’s annual raffle and spaghetti dinner, bringing in $70,981 to 35 West Sacramento charities. The ceremonial dinner, held on Saturday, Oct. 17 inside the gymnasium at Our Lady of Grace School on Linden Road, brought smiles and good cheer to those receiving checks and those handing them out. The Knights of Columbus, a fraternal organization of more than 1.8 million members, showed on Saturday its dedication to its four areas of service as local members dished out plates of delicious spaghetti and salad to the hundreds of hungry community members who awaited the start of the presentation of checks.

What started off with the golf tournament in the late 1980s, netting about $30,000, this year’s West Sacramento Foundation total marks a big accomplishment. The following nonprofit organizations sold more than $5,000 worth of raffle tickets: Veterans of Foreign Wars, River City High School Music Boosters, Southport Elementary PTA, River City Rowing and Our Lady of Grace School. Richard Stamos, commander at Bryte VFW post 949, said his nonprofit the VFW Riders Association, will be putting the money earned at this year’s raffle ($4,680) toward helping veterans, including helping with hospital bills and memorials. “One guy (a veteran) got kicked out of his house. What’s That Smell? Last week, several calls have come into City Hall regarding a strong odor described as sewage, in the Southport area. Well, it’s not a sewage spill. West Sacramento Public Works crews have been out diligently investigating the stink, but have not been able to locate the source. The unpleasant odor seems to appear every autumn…some years are worse than others. Air quality experts in the past have looked into naturally decomposing vegetation that occurs in large bodies of water, like the Yolo Bypass. So far this year, that has not been confirmed as the source. West Sacramento residents are encouraged to contact the The Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District or West Sacramento Connect if the odor persists. Source: West Sacramento City iLights

Alina Corona and Mia Corralejo wear their custom made white cheer shirts and help fire up the crowd during a recent football game at RCHS.

RCHS welcomes new honorary cheerleaders By AnnaMaria Corona RCHS Journalism Student Two River City High School students from Nancy Abplanalp’s special needs class were invited to cheer with the junior varsity cheerleading squad last Friday night during the Raider’s home game against Yuba City. Students Alina Corona and Mia Corralejo had the opportunity to help excite the crowd and encourage the football team in what turned out to be very close and tense game that came down to the last play. Besides being close to all the action on the field, Corralejo said that what she liked most about cheerleading was the new friendships she has been able to make with the other members of the squad. The two new honorary cheerleaders participated in the routines with the assistance of senior cheerleader Samantha McCormack. McCormack is Abplanalp’s teacher assistant

in her class. It was McCormack’s idea to have the two girls come out and cheer and she took the lead in organizing the details of this event. McCormack also designed and ordered custom t-shirts online for the two girls to wear during the game. “It was really fun. Seeing Mia and Alina having fun and being so excited, they took the stress away,” says McCormack. Mia and Alina have been invited to join the cheerleading squad for the remainder of the football and basketball seasons at all home games. They will cheer next Friday the 23rd at River City’s senior night during junior varsity’s last home game of the season against Woodland. When asked her reaction to seeing her daughter cheer for the first time, Alina’s mom, Melissa Corona said, “It makes me so proud of our community’s high school students and cheerleaders to see how welcoming and supportive they have been. It was such an emotional experience to see the girls do something I never thought they could.”

Southport levee improvement project now underway For more than five years, West Sac Flood Protect has been planning and designing for the launch of the Southport Levee Improvement Project. The project improves a vulnerable stretch of levee along the Sacramento River in Southport. The first phase of the Southport Levee Project is construction of Village Parkway South, which is now underway. Village Parkway South will replace segments of South River Road; construction is anticipated to last nine months. The City of West Sacramento’s General Plan already identifies the construction of Village Parkway but due to the levee improvements, construction is starting 10 years earlier than previously anticipated. Construction of the sixmile levee improvement will start next summer. Also under construction this fall is a roadway project called Village Parkway North. Although not associated with the Southport Levee Project, the construction schedules overlap. When both roadway projects are complete next year, the new continuous Village Parkway will connect the Mike McGowan Bridge to Gregory Avenue. Source: West Sacramento City iLights

Letter to the editor The following was a letter first addressed to Congresswoman Doris Matsui: Rather than simply move west Sac’s Merkley Avenue post office to South Port and thus highly an inconvenience for many seniors and businesses, please consider these alternatives: 1. Buying either adjacent lot: east or west, expanding Merkley Avenue’s Post Office’s customer parking, post office delivery trucks’ turnaround space 2. Buy up lot for sale across from the old Hollywood Hardware and consider razing existing businesses and expanding current Bank of America parking lot for both bank and post office customers 3. Old Hollywood Hardware store could be converted into an expansion of the Merkley Avenue post office, solving parking problems and expanding the customer service area. Retain as a neighborhood post office, please. Thank you, Congresswoman Matsui, William A. Lowell West Sacramento

Fundraiser for Sacramento Steps Forward to be held on Oct. 30 at Starlight Lounge, $10 By Dean Haakenson I’ve been a Downtown Sacramento Flâneur for a long time. I bought a cheap house in Broderick some six years ago, and thankfully, I still find myself able to walk the three miles into downtown to my workplace. I’ve seen many of the same characters on these sweet sidewalks, some of which are obviously homeless; pulling carts, holding signs… and some who just seem different from the average people in your neighborhood; yelling at the heavens, body cloths and skin a bit more grimy than is fashionable… Do they have a home? Are they hungry? Are they lonely? Is it my responsibility to help them if they need help? I’ve reconciled my politics to believe that YES, the responsibility of a successful society to care for its most unemployable, weak, displaced, and mentally ill, or potentially violent, is a matter more important than however we may feel personally about said vulnerable fellow citizens.

With these thoughts in mind, I’ve organized a fundraiser for the regional homeless services provider Sacramento Steps Forward (sacramentostepsforward.org). Because, on top of having a jovial conversation (more important than money to some of our lonelier fellow sidewalkers, I’d like to think), or giving a few bucks to your neighborhood homeless guy, services to the needy are arguably best provided in an organized setting, such that SSF offers. Among their services are advocacy, assistance and resource information to all who need it, and their Winter Sanctuary program facilitates our most vulnerable getting to shelters in our coldest months. Jay Eisenberg’s SoHo Entertainment kindly booked this at the historic Starlite Lounge (formerly Townhouse, now renovated, serving food, at 1517 21st st). A fitting venue, we’ll play in the sizable upstairs. I’m grateful that some of Northern California’s best songwriters and bands agreed to donate their time: Joe Kye voted “Art-

This collection of lyrically driven music will display elements of Rock, Pop, and Americana in satisfying balance. And to boot,

on a recent walk, I ran into Mark Bell aka Mark The Hobo, a kind homeless man who is known for his poetry about homelessness, and who is writing some poems for the event, which either he or I will read MC style. West Sacramento schools participated in earthquake safety drills The Washington Unified School District participated in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill—the world’s largest earthquake drill ever! On Thursday, Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m. schools throughout West Sacra-

mento practiced how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On as part of the worldwide safety movement ensuring schools and districts know how the protect themselves from earthquakes. The West Sacramento Fire Department joined the WUSD at Westmore Oaks Elementary School making sure the practice exercises

run smoothly and that everyone on campus is aware of the proper safety procedures during an emergency. Beginning in 2008, the annual International ShakeOut Day of Action is held on the third Thursday of October each year with the goal of educating the public on what to do before, during, and after an

earthquake. With funding from the National Science Foundation and United States Geological Survey, Southern California Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California coordinates Earth science research at more than 60 universities. With primary funding from the Federal Emergency

Management Agency, SCEC’s Communication, Education, and Outreach program leads the Great California ShakeOut and coordinates with regional ShakeOut leaders worldwide. This includes nearly every U.S. state and territory, which in total reportedly had more than 20 million participants this year.

Yolo County republicans elect new leadership, successfully hold biggest event of the year The Yolo County Republican Central Committee has chosen its new officers and is continuing to build momentum as it moves into the 2016 Presidential election. Allison Olson, a professional advocate for Republican policies under the dome of the State Capitol, will serve as Chair of the Yolo County Republican Central Committee. A mother of two small children and a UC Davis grad, she has lived in Yolo County for a decade and is assuredly the youngest chair in the entire state. “I am truly humbled and honored by the confidence my community has in me to lead this remarkable group of volunteers,” said Olson. The Executive Vice Chair was filled by local business leader Alzada Knickerbocker, a longtime resident and business owner in Yolo County. Recent UC Davis graduate Cameron Kelly became the new Secretary. The election of these new officers came a short time before a successful Constitution Day Dinner on September 24th, where state GOP Chair Jim Brulte spoke eloquently at some length on the resurgence of the Republican party in the state and provided a vision for a path forward that was both optimistic and realistic at the same time. “We continue to build our presence in the county with better organization, visibility, and outreach,” Olson said. “The Republican party shares so many values with Americans across the political spectrum, and we look forward to working together on the many important issues that face our nation, state, and local communities.”

Matías Bombal’s Hollywood Bridge of Spies The MPAA has rated this PG-13 DreamworksSKG and Twentieth Century Fox offer Steven Spielberg’s cloak and dagger, cold war, real life saga “Bridge of Spies”. The former insurance attorney James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks), whose career of remarkable international negotiation skills began with a tenuous exchange of prisoners is brought to life in this movie. The head of the firm where Donovan works, Thomas Watters, Jr. (Alan Alda) recruits Donovan for a thankless job; defending a KGB intelligence officer, Rufolf Abel (Mark Rylance), recently captured by the CIA in New York City. The pragmatic painter Abel had been sending US military secrets to Russia. Donovan did not relish the assignment, but his firm had no idea that he would then do his job to the very best of his ability, with due diligence of making sure that the clearly guilty man was given every opportunity allowed by the law in the United States. His colleagues are stunned that he would perform the task so altruistically, since the accused was clearly an enemy of the USA. Donovan clinged to the ideals

Cold Counselor: Tom Hanks is James Donovan in “Bridge of Spies”- Twentieth Century Fox/ Dreamworks SKG established into law in the Constitution of the United States. The movie depicts, according to the screenplay by Ethan and Joel Coen (with Matt Charman), how hated he becomes, and that his life is in danger. Riding the elevated train in the city, passengers stare at him with a scowl as they look up and see him, after having just seen his photo in the evening editions. He successfully, and quite surprisingly arranges for a long imprisonment rather than a death sentence for Abel when he argues to the Supreme Court that it would be wise to keep him in case of the future need to possibly trade him back to the USSR in case a U.S. citizen or soldier is

captured by Russia. That very opportunity presents itself when U-2 spy plane pilot Francis G. Powers (Austin Stowell) is shot down over Soviet soil. Donvan is asked to negotiate a trade of the two men, secretly, on his own, as the U.S. government will not officially sanction his acting on the behalf of the USA. True to his pursuit of justice and love of country, he accepts the risk and is sent to Berlin, where he is to “unofficially” meet with Russian leaders to negotiate the trade, while shadowed by the CIA. It becomes more complicated when Donvan notes that a U.S. citizen in East Berlin, Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers) is also captured by the German police trying to escape to West Berlin, so he wants to land two for one. This movie is an excellent example of Hollywood at its best at every level. Great writing, Spielberg’s ability to make images so memorable that they linger in our mind, great photography by Janusz Kaminski and a good score by Thomas Newman, are all superlative throughout. This movie reminded me much of the feel of Martin Ritt’s movie version of John Le

Carre’s “The Spy Who Came In from the Cold” of 1965. Hanks is effective in this, his fourth film with Spielberg, and great to see Alan Alda on the screen, even so briefly. Many of the locations are the actual places in New York, Germany and Poland. This will make for an excellent time at the movies, put it on your list of pictures to see. Freeheld The MPAA has rated this PG-13 Summit Entertainment, A Lionsgate Company, offers a cinematic version of the true story of Lieutenant Laurel Hester. Played by Julianne Moore, Hester is a policewoman in New Jersey whose struggle with cancer brings into focus the need for her to be able to assign her pension benefits to her domestic partner, also a woman. This was without precedent in her New Jersey city, and the long battle for equality before the city officials, whilst her cancer began to rob her of life, is at the core of this movie with some fine performances. The movie begins with our introduction to Lt. Hester, working on a drug bust. We see that she is efficient

and respected by her fellow officers. Not wishing to expose her sexual preference at her workplace, or even with her police partner, she travels out of state to find some sort of social life. Following a volleyball league meeting she meets Stacie, played by Ellen Page. Ellen Page’s mannerisms and gender bending appearance reminded me of the “look” and gestures of the infant terrible of the pop music world, Justin Bieber. Stacie is much younger that Laurel, yet the two women grow in mutual respect and eventually decide to get a home together. Their relationship is tried by those types of growing pains found in any relationship. Laurel is more controlling than the Stacie and each have different goals for themselves and their hopes for each other. Laurel’s professional need to hide her sexuality at work also causes much frustration to the younger Stacie. Laurel’s police partner, Dane Wells, is played by the always good Michael Shannon, here in a more human role than he is usually cast. He sneaks in and almost steals the picture with his great performance. As Laurel’s cancer gets worse, she appeals directly to the city freeholders for the ability to be able to transfer her pension to her domestic partner. She is repeatedly denied. Up to this point, the movie is relatively serious in nature as the story reflects their grow-

ing relationship, and increasing issues of Laurel’s decaying health. The arrival of actor Steve Carell playing the Jewish gay activist Steven Goldstein livens and lightens the mood, but quickly becomes annoying. Goldstein brings protestors and drums-up a media circus to put pressure on the city’s freeholders about this case, drawing national attention to the little New Jersey City. The real-life events on which this picture is based are compelling. The performances of Julianne Moore and the riveting Michael Shannon further the proof of mastery of their craft. Hans Zimmer’s score is appropriate and pleasant. The movie itself however, no matter how compelling the story and performances, does not hold up well overall on initial viewing. It is a movie I wanted to like, but was just not overly impressed with. It seems the ideal formula for the forthcoming Oscar race, where generally a great actress, which Ms. Moore most certainly is, plays a personage with a terminal illness, thus gaining the sympathy audiences and the voting peers of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to vote in her favor. This has happened over and over in the past, and if there’s anything you can rely on, even in Hollywood, it is the adherence to doing the same thing again that worked before. Worth seeing for some fine acting, but it might have been better overall.
