WELCOME

Dear Friends, Welcome to the Vail Valley Foundation’s Vilar Performing Arts Center and thank you for being a patron of the arts! This season represents a new era for this iconic theater. Thanks to wonderful support from people like you, our venue was able to celebrate a phenomenal 25th anniversary over the past two seasons. This year, we step forward into our 26th season with more momentum, support, and excitement than perhaps ever before. From the recently-upgraded sound system, to the beauty of our new Rippeto Family Chandelier (created by artist Alexia Jurschak, VPAC Committee Chair Dale Chihuly), to the newly-modernized acoustic banners, our venue has undergone a series of improvements and enhancements, some big, some small. We hope you take the time before or after your next attendance, while the lights are up, to enjoy the unparalleled beauty and intimacy of our one-of-a-kind venue. This season, we welcome our new Executive Director, Cameron Morgan, to our team. Former Executive Director Owen Hutchinson remains, fortunately, with us as our new Artistic Director. We are also fortunate to have a very talented team on board, from full- and part-time staff, to supporters, board members, and volunteers, who are not only the reason why each performance is a new and enlightening experience, but also who help make this theater a center for our community and a destination for performing-arts lovers from around the Rockies and the world.

V P A C W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 - 2 0 2 4 // V I L A R P A C . O R G

We have so much to celebrate this season, and for many seasons to come, and we are grateful that you are with us along the way. Thank you for your patronage of the Vilar Performing Arts Center, and we look forward to continuing the legacy of this special place on earth for all of us to enjoy.

A GENRE-BENDING EXPERIENCE THURSDAY, DEC. 21, 2023 | 6:30 P.M.

Captivating. Engaging. Innovative. These words best describe the Nu Deco Ensemble that exploded onto the musical scene in 2015, fusing innovative, genre-bending orchestral performances and collaborations with the highest levels of musical artistry. They simply have reimagined a fresh vision of what an orchestra can achieve in the 21st century. Created by two of classical music’s most indemand artists, Jacomo Bairos and Sam Hyken, the ensemble is a flexible, hybrid orchestra that celebrates living composers, reimagines all genres of music and works with a wide range of diverse musical guests, composers, choreographers and mixed-media artists. They’ve had collaborations with Macy Gray, Ben Folds, Jacob Collier, Kimbra and Stephen Marley, to name just a few. The New York Times has hailed the Nu Deco Ensemble as a “Chamber orchestra for the 21st century” and Billboard says they are “sonically spellbinding.” Without a doubt, you will be captivated by this young orchestra’s energy and innovation.

HOLIDAY SWINGIN’!

CONCERT

A KAT EDMONSON CHRISTMAS

19

FRIDAY, DEC. 22, 2023 | 7:00 P.M. She’s both magical and mischievous and incredibly talented. Kat Edmonson has it all and is an award-wining songwriter and singer. “She’s as fresh as a bouquet,” says the New York Times, “with an equal foothold in jazz, cabaret and vintage cosmopolitan pop.” Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid twentieth century, Edmonson is a rare artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant. While performing original songs as well as familiar classics, she interweaves humorous anecdotes, philosophical musings and her love of film with disarming candor and vulnerability. And her longtime band members know that, at times, Edmonson will freely veer off script. That’s just Kat being Kat — and the audience loves it.

LIVINGSTON TAYLOR PLAYING ORIGINAL WORKS AND MORE THURSDAY, DEC. 28, 2023 | 7:00 P.M. Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of 13, which began a career that has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching. The fourth child in a very musical family which includes his brother, James, Taylor creates beautifully crafted, introspective, original songs as well as sparkling interpretations of the classic songbook that have earned him enthusiastic listeners worldwide. His repertoire includes every genre of music — folk, pop, gospel, jazz, and performances with a full symphony orchestra. He’s equally at home with them all. Taylor is a natural performer who peppers his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge and fans might be treated to a classic Gershwin or a favorite from a Broadway musical. So, sit back, relax and enjoy. At some point, you’ll probably be singing along. This evening’s performance is generously supported by Holiday Series Presenting Underwriters: Patricia & Peter Kitchak

MICHAEL CARBONARO ASTONISHING MAGIC

V P A C W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 - 2 0 2 4 // V I L A R P A C . O R G

SATURDAY, DEC. 30, 2023 | 5:00 P.M. & 8:00 P.M. Ask anyone who’s seen Michael Carbonaro and they’ll all give you the same feedback: He’s extremely creative, a great magician and a terrific entertainer. Yes, he’s all that! As one reviewer put it, “From the smiles it brings, to the energy it exudes, the electricity of a live show carries a magic in its own way.” He simply performs tricks in everyday situations and is always challenged to come up with new, astonishing magic effects. And if anyone can do it, he can! The moment Carbonaro hears the roar of the crowd, and the lights go down, his passion for the power of live entertainment takes over and he hits the spotlight. At times, he uses image magnification with large screens and cameras that flow in and out, which only adds to this dynamic show. “I like to create free-flowing family fun and joyful absurdity,” he says. We look forward to that!

RAILROAD EARTH A PICKIN’ PARTY

CONCERT V P A C W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 - 2 0 2 4 // V I L A R P A C . O R G

THURSDAY, JAN. 11, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. If there is one key theme to nearly every Railroad Earth show, it’s the ability of the music to get the audience smiling. This blue grass-influenced American band combines elements of progressive bluegrass, folk, rock, country, jazz, Celtic and other Americana influences. Essentially, you name it — they play it. Recognized as “carrying on the tradition of improvisational, genre-spanning music laid forth by the Grateful Dead,” the band is known for lyrical songwriting and extensive live improvisation. Railroad Earth takes its name from the Jack Kerouac prose poem, “October in the Railroad Earth,” and, in fact, also has a song of the same name. The band has a timeless blend of bluegrass and Americana with a healthy dose of improvisation thrown in to keep things interesting, allowing it to consistently connect with its loyal fans.

Master choreographer Alonzo King summarizes his dance teaching philosophy, which emphasizes everyone’s discovery, improvement and expression of deep bodily perceptions and understanding. The company is young, vibrant and totally immersed in an amazing style of blending all genres of dance — making it flow from beginning to end, which is King’s vision: He draws on the strengths of his extraordinary dancers, altering the way we look at ballet today. Celebrating over four decades of evocative dance, master choreographer King’s unique artistic vision adheres to the classical form - the linear, mathematical and geometrical principles deeply rooted in the East-West continuum. The company will perform King’s newest creation, Deep River, a collaboration with composer Jason Moran and vocalist Lisa Fischer. LINES Ballet was created with “the purpose of touching hearts and stirring minds through dance and embraces a spirit of inquiry and openness to change combined with a reverence for legacy and history.”

JOSH TURNER THE GREATEST HITS TOUR WEDNESDAY, JAN. 17, 2024 7:00 P.M.

V P A C W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 - 2 0 2 4 // V I L A R P A C . O R G

With timeless songs like “Long Black Train” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” Josh Turner reaches people all over the world. A native of South Carolina, Turner, who is often compared to Randy Travis, demonstrates that he can live up to the comparisons. Turner shares Travis’ strikingly deep backwoods vocals, his traditional country sound and his storytelling skills. Over the years, Turner has won numerous awards including Mainstream Country Artist, 2005 Song of the Year for “Me and God,” and the 2006 Songwriter of the Year, to name a few. And he performs like an iconic gentleman — always giving his all, his deep drawl and distinctive sound igniting fans. Turner is an incredibly talented singer-songwriter, one who is the heartbeat of country music and whose performance will leave the audience wanting more.

CONCERT

YOU’RE GONNA ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT! THURSDAY, JAN. 18, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. Some bands put on a concert — Hairball creates an event! With lights, sound and smoke, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget! To merely call it a concert would be like calling Mount Rushmore a roadside attraction. Vocalists Kris Vox, Dave Moody and Drew Hart lead the band with mind-blowing and drop-dead accurate homage to some of the biggest arena acts in the world. Van Halen, KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey and Aerosmith are just a few of the performers Hairball brings to life creating a rock concert right before your eyes. The motor that drives Hairball consists of HBK on electric bass, Billy on drums and Happy on lead guitar, all of whom pride themselves on nailing some of the most memorable licks and chops of all time. CONCERT V P A C W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 - 2 0 2 4 // V I L A R P A C . O R G

SATURDAY, JAN. 20, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. The catch-all categorical box which seems to define The Lone Bellow, a Nashville-based trio, is “Americana.” Formed in NYC over a decade ago, The Lone Bellow defines its sound as Brooklyn Country, a genre-defying blend of folk, country, rock, blues and gospel. The group includes Zach Williams on lead vocal and guitar, Kanene Donehey Pipkin on vocals, bass and mandolin and Brian Elmquist on guitar and vocals who all seem to be holding a communal, old-time revival with roof-raising harmonies. One critic said that the group offers “a religious experience without the religion — Zach Williams, a preacher, singing his songs like psalms, allowing ‘the spirit to take over.’” These musicians are known for their transcendent harmonies, serious musicianship and raucous performances. Their welcoming voices, approachable character and friendly sway will pull you in — making for an unforgettable, joyous evening of song.

THURSDAY, JAN. 25, 2024 | 6:30 P.M. Chanticleer can best be described as a group of male voices strong and polished to a handsome gleam — the name derived from the “clear singing rooster” in Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The hallmarks of the group are purity and pristine execution – always — and beautifully — highlighted in their concerts. This Grammy Awardwinning, full-time male classical vocal ensemble is known for its interpretations of Renaissance music, for which they were founded. Yet, they also perform a wide repertoire of jazz, gospel and contemporary classical music – and recently – some hip-hop and rap, as they are committed to using their unique brand, flexibility and experience to adapt to the rapidly changing dynamics of the music industry. The group’s mission is to present choral music at the highest level of excellence, to encourage worldwide appreciation for the art of ensemble singing. And they do just that. They both entertain and enlighten. This evening’s performance is generously supported by Presenting Underwriters: Alexia & Jerry Jurschak

DANCE

MOMIX: ALICE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MOSES PENDLETON

To an audience, MOMIX is pure magic. As one reviewer put it, “This company of dances has pronounced athleticism married to an informed sense of humor, conveyed with a technical mastery of theater mechanics.” When it comes to dance innovation, they continue to be in a league of their own. And it’s not hard to understand. Founded and directed by Moses Pendleton, a former dancer, co-founder of the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theater and Guggenheim Fellow, MOMIX combines dance and movement with illusion and mystery, utilizing lighting effects, costumes, props and music for a complete sensory experience. They draw inspiration from classical ballet and other dance forms as well as acrobatics, gymnastics and yoga. This company simply creates astonishing, awe-inspiring works of art. To see MOMIX is to witness the tremendous innovation and artistry possible with the human body. This company is truly breathtaking. Moses Pendleton’s newest creation, ALICE, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland sends audiences flying down the rabbit hole. This dazzling production brings mind-bending adventure, as Alice encounters time-honored characters including the undulating Caterpillar, a lobster quadrille, frenzied White Rabbits, a mad Queen of Hearts, and a variety of other surprises. RACHAEL & VILRAY Rachael Price, honey-voiced lead vocalist of the indie pop band Lake Street Dive, and her musical partner, the masterful songwriter, singer and guitarist Vilray, met two decades ago as students at the New England Conservatory of Music. They traveled in concentric musical circles before beginning to perform together in 2015. In the years since they began, their configuration has ranged from an intimate duo to a nine-piece formation heard on their album, I Love a Love Song. No matter the set-up on stage, the duo sing right to each other, tell stories about how these original songs came to be and relate them to old love songs they love to love — songs that are cherrypicked from various decades — jazz, pop and Tin Pan Alley songs from the 1930s and 1940s. Price’s soulful voice and Vilray’s deft guitar work will take your breath away.

American organist and composer Cameron Carpenter has been dubbed by critics as a “brilliant maverick, an astonishing, and astonishingly original artist.” Carpenter graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Arts and has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School in New York. He was the first organist to receive a Grammy nomination in the category of “Best Solo Instrumental Performance” (without orchestra) for Revolutionary, which was recorded at Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City. Carpenter performs on the International Touring Organ, (ITO), which he created — a customized, full-scale organ sonically tailorable to any acoustic environment that can break apart into six pieces for easy transport. His appearance will not be just a performance, but rather, an event. The Los Angeles Times called Carpenter, “one of the rare musicians who changes the game of his instrument.” Certainly, a serious musician, and a brilliant performer, as well.

This evening’s program: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Fantasia and Fugue in c minor, BWV 537 Prelude and Fugue I in C Major (WellTempered Clavier, Book II), BWV 870 Prelude and Fugue XII in F Major (Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II), BWV 880

SUNDAY, FEB. 11, 2024 | 6:30 P.M. The Takács Quartet, now entering its forty-ninth season, is renowned for the vitality of its interpretations. “What endures about the Takács Quartet year after year,” commented The Guardian, “is how equally the four players carry the music.” Based in Boulder at the University of Colorado, Edward Dusinberre, Harumi Rhodes (violins) Richard O’Neill (viola) and Andras Fejer (cello) perform 80 concerts a year worldwide. This season the ensemble will feature varied projects including a new work, “Flow,” an exploration and celebration of the natural world written for them by Nokuthula Ngwenyam, an American solo violinist and composer. The work was commissioned by nine concert presenters throughout the U.S.A. As one critic put it, “The Takács Quartet is totally compelling, encapsulating a vast array of colors and textures.” Another suggested, “They are a class act, if ever there was one, marrying aristocratic elegance and red-blooded energy to everything they play.” They are, simply, the best.

MIGHTY POPLAR WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15, 2024 | 7:00 P.M.

There’s no doubt that bluegrass music, which evolved out of old-time string music, is a fever-inducing obsession. People love the sound, feel and spirit of the genre — and pickers and pluckers and audiences, as well, can’t get enough. So, when the bluegrass outfit, Mighty Poplar — Chris Eldridge and Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers), Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse), Greg Garrrison (Leftover Salmon) and Alex Hargreaves (Billy Strings) — take the stage, the audience is going to hear that spirit loud and clear. They are some of the most beloved pickers in the land. And they relish in the act of playing and sharing it with others, each with a wildly impressive resume on his own. This is a rare opportunity to see such accomplished figures playing songs simply for the joy of it. This spirit-filled evening will provide an eyeopening taste of bluegrass’ intoxicating bliss through the scope of world-class entertainers.

Utterly unique, sophisticated, explosive, electrifying — these are all words used to describe STOMP, an eight-member troupe that will have you clappin’ and tappin’ in your seat. This international percussion sensation has garnered rave reviews and an armful of awards. And rightly so. STOMP uses everything except conventional percussion instruments to bring down the house. You name it, they play it — matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, lighters, hubcaps. The theater will absolutely permeate with magnificent rhythms. And the new props, like tire inner tubes and paint cans, only add to the rhythms that never stop. They’ll be bashing, crashing, smashing, swishing, banging and kicking with a beat. As The New York Times put it, “STOMP is as crisp and exuberant as if it had opened yesterday.” It’s pure entertainment and raucous energy. It’s organized madness that will permeate the theater. GRACE POTTER FRIDAY, FEB. 23, 2024 | 7:00 P.M.

CONCERT

MOTHER ROAD

43

Grace Potter’s approach to rock ‘n’ roll has shades of the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. At once she is classic and contemporary with a unique, endless energy that will leave you breathless and dancing in the mosh pit. Throughout her career — from the rootsy rock of her mid-2000s group, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, to her present-day solo turn — Potter emotes self-confidence and attitude and was named “one of the best living voices of rock” by SPIN magazine in 2015. Her music creates music that gravitates to folks who grew up with the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. Yet, ideal for the youngins who want to dive into a unique kind of energy. Potter’s dynamic vocal ability has drawn comparisons to legends Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin. And to think that as Potter recounts, she was “kicked out of school bands because she couldn’t read music.” That’ll learn ‘em!

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 28, 2024 | 8:00 P.M. Known for his edgy humor, stand-up comedian Ari Shaffir might be offensive to some. That’s what makes him so good. With a tongue-in-cheek, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes quirky sense of humor, Shaffir tends to discuss inappropriate subjects that most people just don’t want to talk about. And for almost 14 years, he did just that in hopes of better understanding humanity. His Passive Aggressive was an act of defiance against responsibility. “Why let people you hate choose how you live your life? Love has always been too much of an effort. Live apart from your spouse. Refuse parenthood. Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean you have to grow up,” advises the comedian. Who knows what Shaffir will talk about tonight? His genres are “black, insult or blue comedy.” Whatever his subject matter, in the end, you can be sure that it’s going to have tongues wagging. Mature audiences only, ages 21+. Moments of this performance may be considered offensive and inappropriate.

CONCERT

MAT KEARNEY BRETT DENNEN FRIDAY, MAR. 1, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. Words that best describe Nashville-based, Oregon-born Mat Kearney are engaging, heartfelt and funny. He focuses on music fusing his simple guitar playing with spoken word or rap — a genre-mixing style with plenty of lyrical “woo-woos” and “na-na-nas” that make for great sing-alongs and spotlight on his melodic jumps and vocal inflections. Kearney began his career by offering what at the time was a unique melding of styles. Fundamentally, Kearney was a pop-folk singer/songwriter; however, he incorporated hip-hop into the music on his 2007 debut album, Nothing Left to Lose. Joining Kearney is Brett Dennen whose soothing folksy voice and brilliantly intellectual lyrics puts his music into a realm of its own — his unique style influenced by musicians Paul Simon, Cat Stevens and Van Morrison. A watercolor artist, outdoorsman and an environmental conservationist, Dennen’s impact has been to gather like-minded music fans to consistently try to make the world a better place. Delving into their personal stash of vintage synthesizers and rare signal processors, this concert is truly a labor of love. In fact, the group’s sound is so close to that of the original artists that, in 2019, Warner Music issued a cease-and-desist for using original artist recordings on their social channels. After hearing the complete live recording of Electric Avenue’s performance, Warner Music issued an apology to the band. The show is a high-energy space that reminds people of a time when they came home from school, put a record on, and listened with open ears and an open heart. Get ready to spend time in the mosh pit. The place is gonna rock….’n’ roll!

SUNDAY, MAR. 3, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. When it comes to entertaining, Nick Swardson has done it all. Actor. Stand-up comedian. Screenwriter. Producer. Swardson’s unique comedic view has made him a regular guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live! He’s starred in two-on-hour specials for Comedy Central and his first comedy album, Party, was certified Platinum. Swardson, who had a recurring role in the comedy series Reno 911 and had his own comedy series, Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time, tours regularly on a bill with Adam Sandler, David Spade and Rob Schneider. He can also be seen on Netflix as part of COMEDIANS of the World, as one of four comedians selected to represent the United States. Expect this evening to be, quite literally, a laugh a minute.

CONCERT

FRIDAY, MAR. 8, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. It’s rare to find a band that continually gets better and better; however, Blackberry Smoke is that band. In fact, they are the first independently released artist in modern history to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Country Album charts. Formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000, the band’s lineup includes Charlie Starr, Richard Turner, Brit Turner, Paul Jackson and Brandon Still. In 2018 they added touring members Benji Shanks and Preston Holcomb. The band’s sound moves effortlessly between rock, blues and country — their rock-centric numbers imbued with some stunning guitar interplay. Plus, a sublime slide on some of the more country tracks, Still’s keys, at times, oozing with the spirit of New Orleans. Whether it’s hard rock, blues or country, Blackberry Smoke’s music reflects the variety of sounds that have, for years, been below the Mason-Dixon line. Y’all will love them.

RECREATING THE ALBUM NOTE FOR NOTE

“We walk on stage. We tune our instruments and then, one-two-three, we gracefully start playing the album,” says Craig Martin, founder of Classic Albums Live (CAL). Unlike traditional cover bands, CAL focuses entirely on the music. No flashy costumes or light show. No onstage banter. No impersonators. Just an entire rock album, played from song to song, exactly like the recording, by some of the best living musicians. And they do rock! “Think of it as a recital,” says Martin. “These albums are historic and stand the test of time.” And, CAL has found success in concentrating solely on the music. Think of it as a symphony for rockers — one that forgoes costumes and impersonators. It’s a concert where the musicians perform an entire classic rock album, note for note, cut for cut — the musicians faithfully recreating every sound on the original album.

Formed by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, the group got rolling with its album “Wildewoman,” featuring long-standing hits like “Two of Us on the Run.” Lucius shifted towards a folk-rock sound with 2016’s “Good Grief,” before taking a break from the studio to join Roger Waters on his Us + Them Tour in 2017-18. As one critic put it, “They are big on vocal unison, as they braid their crystalline voices into a lush cascade with immaculate harmonies, often singing directly to each other so their voices make for a single sound.” Joining Lucius is Dawes, an American folk rock band from Los Angeles, California, composed of brothers Taylor (guitars and vocals) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums), along with Wylie Gelber (bass) and Lee Pardini (keyboard).

This evening’s program:

Violinist and online personality Ray Chen who, at age 15, was accepted to the Curtis Institute of Music, redefines what it means to be a classical musician in the 21st century. With a global reach that enhances and inspires a new classical audience, Chen’s remarkable musicianship transmits to millions around the world, reflected through his engagements both online and with the foremost orchestras and concert halls around the world. His commitment to music education is paramount and, through his online promotions of his appearances, inspires the younger generation of music students with his series of self-produced videos combining comedy and music. Beyond the performing arts, his work has also contributed to philanthropy, popular culture and educational technology. Chen plays the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius violin, once owned by the famed Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim (1831-1907), on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation. Chen will be accompanied by pianist Julia Elizalde.

Movement — both the conceptual and physical — is humankind’s only common language, and as a 21st-century dance company, BODYTRAFFIC is honored to share the responsibility of making dance accessible to everyone. The company uses the creative spirit of its Los Angeles home as a backdrop for delivering performances that inspire audiences around the globe to simply love dance. And they do inspire! A forward-thinking company, BODYTRAFFIC is not one driven by a single choreographic voice. It aims to endorse established and new voices and be a home for an eclectic range of styles and perspectives that tell vital stories through contemporary dance. Challenge, passion, empathy, inclusion and growth are at the heart of everything that BODYTRAFFIC does. It seeks to elevate dance beyond an art form to a mode of exploration and celebration of ideas and spirit through movement. Because, after all, without movement, nothing changes. The company’s goal is simply to get the world moving.

COMEDY

WEDNESDAY, MAR. 27, 2024 | 6:00 P.M. Mike Birbiglia is a comedian, storyteller, director and actor who has performed in front of audiences worldwide, from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall to Broadway. His routine has garnered an Outstanding Solo Show, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle award for his outstanding performances. He talks on stage about his wife, the poet J Hope Stein, whose soothing voice has “a thread-count of 600,” he bemoans the arrogance of the bed, the only item of furniture to have an entire room named after it, and he makes good-egg, commonsense arguments, such as his plea against tardiness: “It’s so easy to be on time because all you have to do is be early — and ‘early’ lasts for hours.” This man is simply so talented that he’ll take you on a creative, fun-loving journey you won’t soon forget.

ENSEMBLE MÉLANGE

PRESENTED ONSTAGE!

SATURDAY, MAR. 30, 2024 | 6:00 P.M. During this unique program, audience members will sit on stage, up-close with the performers. Ensemble Mélange, formerly known as SHUFFLE, is a joyful sextet of all-star virtuosos shaking up the concert experience, forging a personal connection with the audience: they are mixing up triedand-true repertoire with a smorgasbord of jewels from distant genres. Essentially, the concert is reformatted as a musician’s party game; after each piece members of the audience are chosen to pick the next piece from an extensive menu organized by style, nationality and time period. The program includes classical music of a wide variety of genres, some jazz, innovative arrangements of tango and musical theater and pieces that were written specifically for the ensemble — most between three and six minutes: the concert moves quickly, and you’ll be exposed to something new. Whether you’re a purist or a populist, a snob or a newbie to classical music, you’ll leave charmed and punch-drunk on a piece you didn’t know you were going to love! Wine and hors d’oeuvres are included with performance ticket!

JOHN SCOFIELD TRIO

FEATURING VICENTE ARCHER & BILL STEWART SATURDAY, APR. 6, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. Aside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar, John Scofield is both inventive and brilliant. He is modern, but deeply rooted in a plethora of traditions. Scofield is a creative artist: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent, rock-solid aesthetic identity — a glorious guitarist with a slightly twisty guitar sound and language that often comes adorned with elements of funk, country and rock. Yet, he is one of the most distinctive, inventive and brilliant of jazz guitarists. A master of his art, Scofield, a triple Grammy award-winning artist with more than 40 recordings to his credit, also expresses himself in the vernacular of blues, jazz-funk, organ jazz, acoustic chamber jazz, groove music, jam-band style and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. Over the decades he’s delved into every nook and cranny of music. He’s jazzed it, rocked it, jam-banded it — and always with the blues beneath it all.

CONCERT

THE ROCKIN’ NEVER STOPS

63

With mega-hits like “Africa,” “Rosanna” and “Hold The Line,” they are the incomparable TOTO, a rock band that has released 14 studio albums and has sold more than 40 million records worldwide. The band was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009 and has received several Grammy Awards. TOTO’s performances cover the whole shebang: the keyboard solo, the drum solo, the singalong — delivering a show that rocks throughout. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community. TOTO knows how to put on a classic rock show better than any others, pumping out some high-octane arrangements, hitting the power chords that will leave rockers wanting more. That’s a given. One can never get enough of this storied band.

NEIGHBOR

CONCERT

TECHNICALLY DAZZLING THURSDAY, APR. 11, 2024 | 7:00 P.M. In terms of raw talent, any one of Neighbor’s members is a first-call musician steeped in what could be considered jam, jazz or any era of rock’n’roll. Even though they are capable of going off on wild instrumental tangents, Neighbor is both technically dazzling and broadly appealing. Their live sets journey through powerful and playful original material, with jaw-dropping covers of wide-ranging influences like The Beatles, Phish, Nirvana, Grateful Dead, The Pixies and more. Regardless of the tune, Neighbor stretches out on their instruments and takes chances with the arrangement. And yet they also feel free to land on a sweet spot that is accessible to a mass audience. The band’s sound took shape in 2019 when keyboardist Richard James and guitarist Lyle Brewer — both songwriters — and bass player Dan Kelly, along with drummer Dean Johnston, were all busy performing with other groups. But they started convening to work on original material. And as they say, “the rest is history.”

VPAC’s Support the Arts Reaching Students (STARS) program has provided youth from 15 Eagle County Schools with the opportunity to attend specially programmed daytime performances in the theater, or directly at their school. Reaching over 8,000 students annually with approximately 20 shows a year, STARS programming is educational, entertaining, often integrates with teachers’ lesson plans and provides a platform for cultural awareness. STARS provides the basis for a life of enjoyment and understanding of diverse performing art disciplines, often for youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity. All STARS performances and transportation are provided free of charge to students in grades K-8. Imagine growing up in a culture and community where, from the earliest age, every single kid without exception from all of the area local schools can enjoy the performing arts, and share in the lessons and ideas generated by those performances. VAIL VALLEY FOUNDATION

MISSION STATEMENT | To provide leadership in arts, athletics, and education and address community needs to enhance our Valley as a place to live, work, and visit.

VILAR PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

VISION STATEMENT | The vision of the Vilar Performing Arts Center is to strive for diversity and excellence in providing artistic, entertainment, and educational activities in a year-round, non-profit performing arts venue for the benefit of Vail Valley residents, visitors, and strategic partners. This list represents donors who have made gifts between September 1, 2022 and November 15, 2023. WINTER SEASON DEBUTS NEW ACOUSTIC ENHANCEMENTS

will also make it much easier for VPAC technicians to deploy them before showtime. “Acoustic banners are rolls of cloth designed to help dampen the sound during amplified concerts,” he says. “They can also be left rolled up during acoustic performances, to heighten the warmth of the room’s sound. That can help accentuate different voices in an orchestra performance — it’s almost like the theater has its own voice.” Over the years, the original banners simply wore out, and VPAC decided this was an important upgrade to coincide with the facility’s 25th birthday. “They had become old and fragile and we’d had to stitch them together. The mechanics used to control them had also started to fail, and we had issues with wiring, as it was all very much a custom job when they were first installed,” Davis adds.

The new banners are made of a felt-like fabric and are between 4 and 7 feet wide, and between 8 and 17 feet tall. Davis says the old banners were made of velour, and were some of the first examples of printing on velour. Equally important, the control systems for the large banners have now been vastly simplified, as the technology has become more common at other venues around the world. While custom wood panels hide the rolling mechanics from the audience, Davis says the updated remote controls will allow staff much easier ability to deploy the banners — which operate about five times as fast, as well. “We now have one-button operation and emergency stop controls, whereas we used to have 22 different buttons that you’d have to try to hit four to six at a time. Now one person can make it all happen, in under a minute.” — by andy stonehouse

As one of the best venues in Colorado to hear live music of almost any description, staff at the Vilar Performing Arts Center continually strive to improve the audience experience. And in late 2023, the 25th anniversary of the facility, that’s meant a substantial upgrade to an audioenhancing background feature that many showgoers may have never noticed — though it is hugely important to the theater’s renowned sound quality. Working with Los Angeles-based Eastman Partners and the VPAC’s original architects, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, this year saw a full upgrade and replacement of the theater’s acoustic banners. According to Dean Davis, the VPAC’s facilities manager, the new banners will continue to help finetune the nightly audio experience by changing the dynamics of the theater’s acoustics. A major upgrade in equipment, he adds,

COMMUNITY ARTS ACCESS

Community Arts Access Program The arts transcend generations, bring communities together and unite us all.

V P A C W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 - 2 0 2 4 // V I L A R P A C . O R G

The arts are a fundamental component to a healthy community. The VPAC’s Community Arts Access (CAA) program ensures that residents from every corner of Eagle County have the chance to be inspired by world-class performances on our stage, free of charge. The program partners with local non-profits, emphasizing education, arts and health/human services to distribute complimentary tickets to families who otherwise would not or could not attend. This program was formally introduced in 2020 to further the VPAC’s commitment to accessibility, inclusivity and community engagement, eliminating barriers and providing local families with a chance to share in the joy and inspiration that the performing arts can offer us all.

OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS THE VPAC COMMUNITY ARTS ACCESS PROGRAM PROVIDED OVER $116,980 WORTH OF TICKETS — THAT’S 2,385 TICKETS TO LOCAL

COMMUNITY MEMBERS! For opportunities to become a part of or contribute to this critical outreach program, please contact the Vail Valley Foundation Development team at connect@vvf.org.

“Art has the ability to broaden our horizons, inspire new possibilities and enrich our lives. Through our ever-expanding community arts access program, we have the great opportunity to welcome audiences to the VPAC who may have otherwise not attended to experience the arts and all its benefits.” – Cameron Morgan, VPAC Executive Director The Community Arts Access Program is supported in part by the Frechette Family Foundation.

For more than two decades, the Grojeans enjoyed wide-ranging performances together at the theater. Their legacy of giving has made a significant impact on VPAC’s programming to date, and Tom’s recent gift will allow the venue’s classical programming to evolve further to feature the genre’s most illustrious soloists, stunning chamber ensembles and orchestras. Now, all classical performances are encompassed under the Therese M. Grojean Classical Series. “This amazing gift to our Vilar Performing Arts Center is a wonderful expression of Therese and Tom’s shared love of classical music, and a continuation of their many years of support,” said Mike Imhof, President of the Vail Valley Foundation. “We are honored and privileged to be entrusted by Mr. Grojean with this opportunity to bring the greatest classical artists to Beaver Creek, in tribute to Therese.” The VPAC is overjoyed to present a series of astounding classical artists this winter season.

ou might credit a particularly supportive college instructor for helping Cameron Morgan to achieve a personal and professional dream – one he thought would take an extra decade to reach. Morgan, who was recently named Executive Director of the Vilar Performing Arts Center, is no stranger to anyone connected to the Vail Valley fine arts and events scene of the last decade. Previously Senior Operations Manager of the Vail Dance Festival, Morgan steps into a role previously held by Owen Hutchinson, who himself has now become the VPAC’s Artistic Director.

It’s a major accomplishment for the 29-year-old Morgan, a performer-turned-arts manager who first visited Vail in 2015 as an intern with the Vail Dance Festival. Having danced professionally for two seasons with Rhode Island’s Festival Ballet Providence (now Ballet RI) and worked as an entertainer on cruise ships, Morgan says his new job will be a great way of giving back to the arts community. “Even before I embarked on a career as a professional dancer, I always wondered what would come next, when performing was over. A leadership role in the arts has long been a professional goal,” Morgan says. “Last year, I drafted a life plan. I thought about going to business school, getting an MBA, and working in consulting for a few years before returning to the arts. Now, thanks to the overwhelming support of the the Vail Valley Foundation, my new job is to lead the VPAC team, to provides connections and resources for our work and mission, and to continue building on the momentum others have established.” A former child actor who landed his first paid job at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival at just 12 years old (“My mom drove me and my baby sister an hour and a half each way to Montgomery, where I made $300 doing 60 shows of “Peter Pan” over three months,” he says), Morgan and his sister both studied dance, in addition to his ongoing roles in community theater, which he had been doing since the age of 7. “Growing up in Alabama, I was very lucky to have incredibly supportive parents, and they’ve always helped me make thoughtful, informed decisions. When I was 11, I had a choice between taking dance classes, or joining a rec league football team. I do enjoy playing sports, but I loved performing and, with the support of my family, I committed to pursuing my goal of a performance career by enrolling in dance and voice lessons.” Later, as they pondered his college options, Morgan and his family decided that the combination of Ballet Performance and Public Relations degrees at the University
