The Amateur Footballer 2024 - Week 7

Page 1

SEASON 2024 - May 25

Each weekend over 300 teams run out to represent their respective VAFA clubs, this means on any given weekend around 7,000 people are playing in the VAFA competition, with a total of 12,000 players registered across the 68 VAFA clubs. The game is played across 21 separate Local Government areas, there are currently 450 registered coaches throughout the association and 450+ registered umpires. These numbers are a great representation of the size of the Association and the contributors that help drive the success of the league each week.

A figure that is harder to get an exact number on is the number of volunteers that support VAFA clubs. It would be conservative however to assume that the VAFA has more than 1000 people volunteering their time to help their beloved VAFA club in any given week. Volunteer roles take on many forms including committee members, match day volunteers, coaches, medical staff, canteen operators and club umpires just to name a few. If players were the body that represented the VAFA, coaches were the brain, then volunteers would undoubtedly be the heart. Without the constant beat of volunteers, the VAFA and its clubs would simply cease to survive.

Post Covid the nature of volunteerism has drastically changed. People who may have previously taken on large volunteer roles at clubs are looking to pull back their club commitments to spend more time with family, take on paid work or simply take time back for themselves.

Many volunteers will be flying blind when they first volunteer at their club with limited knowledge of how to perform the tasks required of them. This is where clubs can play a vital role in helping new volunteers to feel supported and valued while undertaking their volunteer roles. Some effective strategies that can help club volunteers feel supported include:

· Recognition – The VAFA has monthly and annual Recognition opportunities to help recognise their contributions of volunteers. Other pathways to recognise volunteers include AFL Awards, Volunteering Victoria, Good Sports and VicSport recognition programs. Clubs are also encouraged to have their own way of consistently recognising club volunteers and embedding this within club practices and driving a culture of recognition.

without volunteers the VAFA and its clubs simply wouldn’t exist

This means that the knowledge and experience of long-term volunteers is also leaving clubs, with many people volunteering for the first time in 2024. The way in which people want to volunteer has also changed with the term “micro-volunteering” now more reflective of new trends in volunteering with volunteers able to “opt in” and “opt out” and work on small projects or tasks over short periods of time as opposed to taking on all-encompassing roles for years and years.

This change in volunteering is important for all within the VAFA community to understand. No longer is it sustainable to have the fortunes of a club rest on the shoulders of the few, it’s now time to invoke the help and support of the entire club community to provide support through shared volunteer roles, small projects and volunteer roles that explicitly match the unique skills that club members have. For example, someone who may work in social media or marketing within their day job is perfectly suited to managing a club social media page, in an efficient and best practice way. By matching tasks and projects to the unique skills of club members, greater quality outcomes are achieved through a more appropriate and professional skill set.

· Connection to resources and information – Many volunteers jump into a volunteer role without knowing where to find resources and documents, there are many organisations and websites that can support volunteers with resources including Toyota AFL ClubHelp, Australian Sports Commissions Game Plan, Volunteering Victoria, Sports Community and the VAFA Club Support page. This means that no volunteers should be reinventing the wheel but simply connecting with resources and tools that are already available.

· Appropriate on-boarding and Management – It’s important that volunteers are set up for success to deliver the tasks of their roles. A clear on-boarding process annually, regular check in’s and considered reflection & review of volunteer roles all help volunteers feel supported while acknowledging the part they play in supporting their club. This process will also greatly support the retention of current and recruitment of new volunteers.

These simple strategies support recruitment and retention of volunteers, while also supporting volunteers to deliver their roles in an efficient manner. The volunteer role is at times a thankless position, away from the spotlight of the oval, but without volunteers the VAFA and its clubs simply wouldn’t exist.

This week, May 20th-26th, is National Volunteers Week, so take the opportunity to thank volunteers at your club, recognise their contributions and commitment and where appropriate lend a hand over the week to help support the many people that make our clubs, Association, and great game such a success.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER

The Tonners keep rolling in William Buck Premier Men’s

Old Brighton have continued their perfect start to 2024, while the reigning premiers have moved up to second after Round 6.

Old Brighton controlled their top-of-the-table clash with Old Scotch at Brighton Beach Oval. The Tonners won the inside battle and controlled territory to boot the first 4 goals and open up a 21-point quarter-time lead.

The second term delivered more of the same, the ladderleaders kicking the only 3 goals of the quarter to hold a commanding 37-point advantage at the major break – the second-placed Cardinals held to just one first-half goal.

Old Scotch added 3 goals in the third term, but the home side added 4 of their own, heading into the final quarter with a 46-point lead. Old Scotch brought some respectability to the scoreboard with 6 goals to 3, but the damage was done - the Tonners 6-and-0 with a statement win, while the Cardinals slid from second to fourth.

Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “A good win against good opposition. We had some challenges with rotations and credit to the group for being able to operate under duress. Defensively we worked really hard to limit their ball movement and that created scoring opportunity. The skipper Harry Hill was outstanding again and ultimately, we had even contribution across all lines when we were a couple of men down.”

Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “Old Brighton showed why they are the benchmark. They applied a high level of pressure to create turnovers and then capitalised. We started to get our game going in the second half and finished the match strongly, however, it was too little too late.

The Brown Brothers - Jack and Henry both performed their roles well and Alex Noblett worked hard on his wing throughout the day. We had another debutant in James Harker, which was a great reward for his effort in the U19’s program the past few seasons.”

Reigning premiers Collegians snatched second spot after they powered away from St Bernards to post their fourth straight win. Just 1.4 was kicked in the opening term – all by the Lions – before the game opened up in the second quarter with a combined 13 goals in what was suddenly a free-flowing contest.

The third term was largely goal-for-goal until the reigning champs booted a couple, blowing the game wide open with

their best football of the season - 8 final-quarter goals to 2 for a percentage-boosting 55-point win.

Skipper Sam Hibbins celebrated his 200th game with 26 disposals and 3 goals – one of 4 Lions to boot 3 as they found their offensive mojo. Ben Overman finished with 26 touches and 3 goals in another eye-catching display for St Bernards.

Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “Credit to St Bernards, they were very strong around the footy, and generated plenty of scores from the middle. It was great to get the result for our warrior skipper Sam Hibbins, in his 200th game. Sam was busy around the footy and also went forward and got his just reward with 3 goals. Josh Walker played his best game for the club, with his class shining through across the 4 quarters.”

Steve Alessio (St Bernards): “Our boys fought hard today but unfortunately could not counter the slick ball movement of Collegians. Our depth is really being tested at the moment with injuries. But on the flip side, being able to play 5 U19’s players in our side so far this season will help us in the long run.”

Old Melburnians snapped their 4-game losing streak with a confidence-building win over University Blacks at Elsternwick Park that has lifted them off the bottom and moved them back within a game of the top 4. OMs controlled the opening term but didn’t take full toll, booting 3.6 to lead by 10 points at the first change.

The third term was decisive as Old Melburnians kicked 4 goals to 1 to motor away to a 29-point lead. That extended to 36 points with the opening goal of the last quarter before Uni Blacks unlocked their offence. They kicked the final 4 goals, including 2 in 90 seconds midway through time-on that brought some discomfort to nervous OM fans. But in the end, the home team posted their second victory with a 12-point win that breathes life back into their campaign.

Paul Satterley (Old Melburnians): “We put together a fourquarter performance against a super combative team who are very difficult to score against. Very proud of all our lads for an even contribution across the ground. Will Nichols, Ben Harding & Jackson Paine were all standouts.”

St Kevin’s received a mighty scare from a plucky Fitzroy at TH King Oval. Just 5 goals were kicked in a defensive first half. SKOB opened up a 15-point advantage midway through the third team, but just as they appeared set to kick clear, momentum shifted. 3 goals in 4 minutes saw the Roys hit the front and head to the last change with a 3-point advantage.

SKOB snatched the lead back in the opening seconds of the final term, before Julian Turner put Fitzroy back in front 4 minutes later. St Kevin’s missed 4 consecutive shots which levelled the game before finding their radar to boot 3 goals in 6 minutes entering time-on.

The Roys slotted a late one, but the upset was not to be. SKOB getting the job done with a hard-fought 12-point win.

Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “It won’t be a game to watch back but we found a way to win against a very honest Fitzroy group. They play the game the right way and for each other, so full respect to them.

They never allowed us to get our game going. Our boys really stood up in the final 15 minutes to ensure a victory on a special day for our captain Sam Critchley’s milestone (100th game). We are very happy to get the win - albeit we have plenty of things to work on.”

Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “Endeavour and effort were outstanding for four quarters against a good side. We gave ourselves a chance to win the game - just need to work on our polish and moving the footy between the arcs. Nathan Ligris (36 disposals, 10 Rebound 50s) set up a lot of play across half back and Jack McKay was influential around the ground.”

The final match of the round was a rare Sunday fixture as University Blues hosted Old Xaverians

The visitors couldn’t find their range early, kicking 10 consecutive behinds from late in the opening term to late in the second. Fortunately for Xavs, they straightened up in the third quarter, booting 5.1 to 1.2 as Charlie MacIsaac took control with 3 goals to hand his team the lead in time-on.

The final quarter was as frustrating for the Blues as the first half had been for Xavs – the home team squandering opportunities with 0.4 as the visitors added 3 majors to run out 19-point winners and join the Blues outside the top 4 on percentage at 3-and-3.

Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “A tough game played in challenging and tough conditions. Both sides boxed it out, and after a pretty wasteful first half with Blues taking the early points, I was really pleased with our ability to take the chances on offer in the second half.

Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “Xavier was simply too strong in all facets of the game. They beat us in the contest, turned us over when we did win possession and managed to score against us.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S

Old Yarra Cobras strike Caulfield in heart-stopping finish

Round 6 was one of celebration and education in the William Buck Premier Women’s competition, with several teams hosting their annual Pride games, encapsulating the positive effect sport can have on the wider community.

The first match of the round saw St Kevin’s travel to Frearson Oval to take on Monash Blues in their annual pride match, where St Kevin’s brushed off an early scare to beat the home side by 28 points.

Monash got off to a hot start, with the majority of the first quarter of play occurring in their forward half. They got reward for their effort when Ainslee Elliott took a strong mark and converted truly at the 15-minute mark of the term, which allowed the Blues to take a 5-point lead into the first break.

A goal for the Saints in the first minute of the second term helped to halt Monash’s momentum and allow St Kevin’s to regain control of the Sherrin. Despite this, the Saints were wasteful going forward, while Monash used their limited opportunities to add another two majors late in the term to extend their lead to 8 points.

After the main break, St Kevin’s returned to the governing brand of football they are known for, kicking six unanswered goals to quell Monash’s hopes of an upset.

Zara Guss was dominant in the midfield, amassing disposals all day, while Kate Stanton played a significant role in getting the Saints back on track, with three goals to her name in the second half.

Anna Purtill and Sydney Lock were credited as the best players for Monash, along with captain Alicia Myers.

Next up, Coburg hosted Kew at RMIT University Bundoora, where Kew showed that they are still one of the best sides in the competition, defeating Coburg by 42 points.

It was a complete performance from the Bears, who consistently managed to hit the scoreboard, while limiting Coburg to only four scoring shots for the day. Only in the second term was Coburg able to break even, with both sides slotting one goal for the quarter.

Dakota Villiva was back to her best for Kew, finishing with a goal and the best on accolades. For Coburg, Kiana Minchin had an impressive game, kicking two of their three goals to earn the top praise of her coaches.

In the main time slot, Collegians surpassed West Brunswick by 8 points at McAlister Oval. Collegians got the upper hand early, outscoring West Brunswick by 5 points in the first term, however West Brunswick responded in the second term to bring things back to level at the main break.

The third term was an intriguing one, with neither side managing to hit the scoreboard, leaving the four points well and truly up for grabs going into the final term. For the second week in a row, Collegians finished things with gusto, scoring 15 points in the last quarter to obtain their third consecutive win.

Kristy De Pellegrini and Audrey Fithall were crucial in defence for West Brunswick, while Charlotte Carney contributed significantly to their attack with two goals.

For Collegians, Aine Bennett and Tanisha Clark were amongst the best, whilst Georgia Harris (2 goals) was their only multiple goal scorer.

The closest match of the round was between Old Yarra Cobras and Caulfield Grammarians, where Old Yarra edged out Caulfield in the final moments to win by one point.

The first quarter was tightly contested, with each side registering 7 points, however, Caulfield Grammarians were more efficient across the next two quarters, taking an 11-point lead into the final term.

For the first ten minutes of the quarter, the ball yo-yoed between the two forward arcs, until Mia Haas managed to score a goal at the 13-minute mark, bringing Old Yarra within striking range. The Cobras were able to quickly surge the ball forward again, where Alannah Murray delivered the fatal blow, putting Old Yarra in front by a single point.

Old Yarra managed to wind down the clock whilst defending Caulfield from hitting the scoreboard again, successfully snatching victory by the smallest of margins.

Mia Giannopoulos and Ellen Buckley were pivotal for Old Yarra, while Sascha Pribil and Alannah Fyffe can hold their heads high, knowing they laid it all on the line for Caulfield.

Over at Melbourne University Oval, it was a closer contest than expected between MUWFC and Old Scotch, with Old Scotch running out as 21-point winners.

Old Scotch won the first three quarters by respective margins of 12, 8 and 7 points, although Melbourne University managed to get on top in the final term to reduce their deficit by 6 points.

Meg Pritchard had her best game of the year so far in a teambest performance for Melbourne University, while Mia Cowan impressed with three goals for Old Scotch.

Now a third of the way through the season, the Round 7 fixture consists of compelling match ups that offer each side the opportunity to prove themselves to the rest of the competition.

Kew will look to make another statement when they host West Brunswick, who are still searching for their third win of the season.

Meanwhile, Collegians have played themselves into form the last couple of weeks but will face a tougher challenge when they come up against top-placed Old Scotch this week.

Over at Righetti Oval, St Kevin’s will need to improve upon their slow starts if they wish to continue their undefeated streak, as they come up against Old Yarra Cobras, who have proven they have what it takes to compete in this division.

Monash Blues are yet to notch their first win of the season but have shown great signs of improvement and should fancy their chances against a battling Coburg side.

Finally, Melbourne University Women’s and Caulfield Grammarians will meet on Sunday afternoon, with both teams looking to bounce back from losses in Round 6.

PREMIER B MEN’S

Williamstown off the mark, Bloods salute in Paul’s 200th

Six Premier B sides sit at 4-2 after six weeks of football, with Old Haileybury nabbing top spot, on percentage, with a 56-point win over Caulfield Grammarians.

Leading by 12 points at the long break in Caulfield, the Bloods played some of their finest football in the third term, punting 8.2 (50) to 0.2 (2) and effectively killing the contest in former captain James Paul’s 200th game.

“James has been fantastic for our footy club,” said coach Daniel Ward. James’ dad Roger - who himself played 200 games for the club - gave a stirring address to the playing group pre-game on what Old Haileybury means to the wider Paul family.

The 31-year-old was typically solid for the Bloods in his milestone match, even finding a way to get in on the scoring act as part of Old Haileybury’s third quarter romp.

As the coach was planning his move late in the third quarter, Paul duly cut off a kick inside forward 50 and kicked the seventh goal of the quarter for his side - subsequently disappearing from view under a pack of celebrating teammates.

Andreas Stefanakis, fresh off some solid VFL form for the Box Hill Hawks, proved to be a handful for Caulfield’s defence, punting seven goals in the 15.14 (104) to 6.12 (48) win.

Grammarians coach Guy McKenna said his side’s third term was “the worst (quarter) we’ve played so far,” and will look to re-energise a group that had won its last three games prior to Round 6. “We just backed off our intensity around the ball,” said McKenna of the third term.

At Fearon Reserve, Williamstown CYMS broke through for its first win of the 2024 season, making the most of blustery conditions to take down Beaumaris 18.11 (119) to 10.10 (70).

Archi Manton was sensational with seven goals - but it was his work to bring his teammates into the game that caught the eye of coach Con Terzoglou. “(It) doesn’t get recognised, but that’s what we talk about internally.”

Manton (Port Melbourne) and Liam Conway (Williamstown) add valuable VFL experience to the young CYs group - they too are just starting their senior footballing careers and have spent much of their junior careers around this CYs team.

Since their Round 3 loss to Haileybury, Terzoglou’s side has shown mettle, this week turning a 17-point quarter time deficit into a 19-point lead by half time.

From there, the CYs “battened down the hatches,” retaining the lead at the final break, then booting nine goals to three in the last – five of their majors coming after the 25-minute mark.

Beaumaris coach Josh Bourke will be hoping for some reinforcements, with just five members of last year’s preliminary final side available to him on Saturday. “We don’t do excuses, and certainly expect better effort moving forward,” he said. “They’re a great bunch of kids and I know they will respond.”

Old Geelong has now won three games on the bounce after a 1-2 start to the season, conversely handing Old Trinity a threegame losing skid at Daley Oval.

After a three-and-zip start, Donald McDonald’s squad has a bit of work to do, now sitting seventh between the pack of six teams with 4-2 records and Beaumaris in eighth at 2-4. “We just haven’t been able to kick that six or seven-goal quarter, whereas the opposition have been able to put that quarter on us,” McDonald said.

Old Geelong leapt to the front with a six-goal-to-two first quarter but were reigned in and trailed by three-quarter-time, having kicked just the one goal across the middle quarters.

Nathan Brown’s team dug deep in the last with goals to Tom Furphy, Will Simson, Michael Nicholls and Sam Barnett, which was enough to see Old Geelong home 11.6 (72) to 8.7 (55).

Brown lauded his on-field leaders - the likes of Jack Sheridan, TIm Jones, William Horsfall, Sam Barnett and Matt Bird. Sheridan’s day in the ruck was particularly impressive: 20 disposals, 11 clearances, 51 hit outs and 6 inside 50s. “We’re so lucky to have him at the footy club. He’s been so consistent for so long,” Brown said.

Old Ivanhoe caught a case of the speed wobbles at home, shut down by an in-form De La Salle side in a defensive affair that yielded just two goals between the sides to half time.

Faced with a few key outs, Old Ivanhoe coach Jarrod Giechen focused on creating a high-pressure, intense game of football centred around the contest at Chelsworth Park.

The visitors kicked eight goals to one after half time, winning 10.14 (78) to 2.8 (20) to secure second spot on percentage.

De La coach Nick Hyland was impressed with his squad’s ability to play four quarters of high-pressure football but wants to see amendments made to “inconsistency with our efforts”.

Spearhead Nathan Scollo was kept to just one goal by Reed Jepson - but Hyland noted how he was able to at least halve aerial contest and get his other forwards involved at ground level. “We feel like we’ve got a lot of avenues to goal - it’s been Scollo’s turn in recent weeks, but he was able to create other opportunities for goals on the weekend,” he said.

Finally, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers remained winless in its match-up with Old Camberwell, bringing a physical inside game but committing costly turnovers in critical positions. After an even start to proceedings, the Wellers broke the game open with late second-quarter goals to James Allen and Jay Kennedy-Harris, establishing a 22-point half time buffer and setting St Bedes a tall order in the second half.

Old Camberwell then kicked five of the first six goals in the third term, taking a 47-point lead and effectively killing the contest, eventually running out 10.12 (72) to 5.9 (39) winners.

Kellan Percy continued his mighty year from the last line, while half back Will Dalrymple (23 disposals, 8 rebound 50s) provided plenty of energy from Old Camberwell’s defence.

Allen (38 disposals) and Harrison Veitch (28 disposals) won 20 clearances between them in a dominant contested display, with “highly unexpected turnovers” costing the Tigers dearly. “We’re doing a lot right in terms of building something, but at some stage we’ve got to start ticking some wins over,” said Tigers coach Brad Berry.

Zac Calvez was super with 22 disposals, 10 marks and 13 intercepts, while Kyah Farris-White was impressive again in a battle with a three-pronged Old Camberwell ruck rotation: Gus Milham, Liam Thomas and Garnet Brennan. ”He’s starting to take some around the ground marks - I think that’s where he’s going to cause damage,” Berry said.

For Anson Brownless, it’s a spot third on the ladder with a meeting set with second-placed De La Salle this Saturday. “You can’t just go into that game with no plan…you need to be so well prepared,” Brownless said.

Considering the tightness of the competition, a win could see either side jump into first - a loss could mean a tumble to as low as seventh. St Bedes/Mentone will hunt its first win of the year at Banksia Reserve against the Sharks while Caulfield and Old Trinity will both look to rebound when they meet at Glen Huntly Park.

Great mates Nathan Brown and Nick Hyland will coach against each other at Como Park when Old Geelong host Old Haileybury - in what promises to be a ripper between two in-form team, while Williamstown CYMS will look to double down when they host Old Ivanhoe.

Beaumaris Sharks have a scorching victory

Round 6 of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition was an exciting one with Beaumaris seizing the spotlight in a blistering 16.8 (104) to 1.0 (6) victory over Aquinas OC, showcasing their strength as a team. Meanwhile, Fitzroy put up a fierce fight against the undefeated Williamstown CYMS, keeping the pressure on and narrowing the gap to just a single goal.

In a statement clash at their home ground, Beaumaris showcased their dominance with a resounding victory over Aquinas, beating them by 98 points. “It’s great to see the playing group being rewarded for their hard work on the training track, especially in the areas that have been a focus,” said Beaumaris coach Darryl Behrendorff.

“We were really impressed with the performance of the whole team, who are starting to gel after welcoming new players into the group. Our intent this week will be to remain consistent and continue to execute and improve in those areas while developing the players individually.”

The match was marked by standout performances from Beaumaris’ goal-kickers Rosie Byrne and Simone Marinelli, who each kicked a hattrick, adding significant firepower to their team’s attack.

Despite their efforts, Aquinas struggled to break through Beaumaris’ strong defence, with Meg Dargan’s lone goal being the only breakthrough for the visiting side. Taylor Leslie and Madison Mauchline were standout players for Aquinas, being named in the top two players for the match.

In an impressive showdown between veterans and newcomers in Prem B, stalwarts Old Geelong clashed with the emerging force of Old Xaverians. Old Geelong used their experience and tenacity to topple Old Xaverians, with the final score reading 11.2 (68) to 2.2 (14).

“Old Xavs were highly competitive and, had we not been so efficient in front of goal, the match could’ve played out very differently. We’d played them last year in D1 and knew they had some quality players and had to be at our best to get the result,” says Old Geelong coach Jack Crameri.

Leading the charge for Old Geelong was Matilda Arthur, the Premier B Women’s current leading goal-scorer, who proved why she holds this title by kicking an impressive six goals.

“Tilly Arthur came back to us this year having been a part of OGs foundation years as a player and coach, before having a couple of years off, focusing on her career and some coaching at the Coates League,” says Crameri.

“She’s a medium-sized forward who got good hands and just gets into the right positions time and time again. We suspect she may have already set a club record tally in the senior goal kicking and we’re really lucky to have such a smart footballer on our side.”

Old Xaverians displayed resilience, with Claudia Lacey and Mel Clarke kicking a goal apiece, but were ultimately unable to match the consistency and precision of Old Geelong.

In a fiercely contested match, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers clashed with Westbourne Grammarians, emerging victorious with a final score of 7.10 (52) to 4.3 (27). St Bedes/Mentone Tigers showcased their dominance in the second quarter where they surged ahead with three goals while keeping Westbourne goalless.

Although Westbourne displayed resilience, matching St Bedes/Mentone Tigers goal-for-goal in the second half, they couldn’t overcome the deficit established earlier in the match.

Standout performances came from St Bedes’ Captain, Madeline Pearson, who led by example with three crucial goals, contributing significantly to her team’s success. Meanwhile, Caitlin Brennan showcased her scoring prowess for Westbourne, finishing as their leading goalscorer with two goals.

Williamstown CYMS and Fitzroy fans were treated to a nail-biting encounter characterised by exceptional defensive displays. Despite the anticipation, the match unfolded as an intensely low-scoring affair at just 10-19 going the way of Williamstown; a testament to the defensive prowess of both teams.

Fitzroy showcased their resilience with a stellar defensive performance, holding the undefeated Williamstown CYMS goalless in the first and fourth quarters. Williamstown’s Alessia Acquaro and Alexandra Woodhead slotted a goal each in the second and third quarters, making it hard for Fitzroy to come back with their solitary goal from Robyn Randell in the second quarter.

Despite the lack of scoring opportunities, both teams exhibited a commendable level of determination and skill, ensuring a fiercely contested battle until the final whistle. This match serves as a testament to the defensive fortitude of both sides and sets the stage for the matchups to come.

Round 7 of the Prem B Women’s VAFA competition promises another exciting slate of matches. Aquinas will face a tough challenge as they take on the undefeated Williamstown CYMS. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will square off against Old Geelong in what is expected to be a closely contested matchup, with both teams currently in the top four on the ladder.

Old Xaverians will play Beaumaris, who are coming off a massive win in Round 6, and Westbourne Grammarians will look to bounce back as they face Fitzroy, with both teams aiming to secure vital points in the league standings.

With each match offering its own unique storyline and potential for surprises, Round 7 is set to deliver another round of intense competition.

PREMIER C MEN’S

Goal, after goal, after goal as forward-line brilliance is evident

Round 6 delivered many thrills across Premier C, with four sides managing to score one hundred plus points where forward pressure and fast game-play was rewarded.

The Parkdale Vultures recorded an emphatic 109 point victory against the Monash Blues on a day where the Vultures dominated from start to finish. Parkdale were on top right from the get go with a healthy 29-point lead at quarter-time. Unfortunately for Monash, they could not stop this blazing forward line who booted a further thirteen goals whilst the Blues only managed two more majors. P arkdale’s Mitch Brown played his role perfectly, kicking an incredible fourteen goals, in what was an amazing day out for him. Captain Charles Cosgriff stood up for the Monash Blues who have just recorded the one victory after six rounds. This win sees the Vultures reiterate their strength in Premier C, finishing the round in first place with a comfortable percentage.

A clash between two top-four heavyweights saw AJAX triumph by 46 points over the Hampton Rovers. In their first match back on home soil at Gary Smorgon Oval, AJAX were in a tight battle with the Rovers throughout the first half but broke away and dominated after half-time.

Both teams were looking to redeem themselves after their respective losses last week, and whilst AJAX achieved that by claiming the four points in this game, the Rovers could walk away with their heads held high, satisfied with the pressure they brought to the contest, particularly in the first half.

Maor Chrapot and Toby Sheezel each kicked three goals for AJAX, whilst Jamie Delaney, Lachlan Cairns and Max Van der Straaten were amongst the best on ground for Hampton.

Mazenod defeated Glen Eira/Old McKinnon by 42 points at Central Reserve. This was a crucial clash for both sides with Mazenod aiming for a win to remain on the tail of the top four as the Gryphons too looked to continue to climb the ladder.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon got off to a good start with Lachlan Mirams getting the Gryphons on the board with the first goal of the afternoon, however soon after Mazenod retaliated with three goals.

This back and forth scoring continued and by half-time, the Gryphons trailed by 13-points, well and truly in arms reach of Mazenod. But in the premiership quarter, Mazenod shone with five majors, and a further two in the last quarter saw them win this game comfortably. Despite the loss, Sean Bass impressed for the Gryphons with four goals.

Oakleigh had a day to forget, suffering a 95-point thrashing at the hands of PEGS. PEGS did not give Oakleigh much of a look in, kicking the first four goals of the match which initially provided them with a 28-point lead at quarter time. PEGS’ lead ballooned as the game continued, most dominant in the third quarter, amassing 50-points on the scoreboard compared to Oakleigh’s two behinds.

Jack Fenner and Daniel Flaherty starred for the away side, both kicking five goals and continuing their good form in 2024. Luke Ashen did well, scoring five of Oakleigh’s nine goals. This loss sees Oakleigh remaining in last spot on the ladder, desperately searching for their first win in Premier C, whilst PEGS sit in sixth place with a healthy percentage.

Sunday’s match-up saw Old Carey defeat Marcellin by 83 points at Marcellin College. Marcellin just struggled to get going as Old Carey made a statement to the rest of Premier C as to why they deserve their place in the top four.

Old Carey got off to a good start and only improved as the game went on, breaking away in the second half which included seven majors in the final term. Skipper Lachlan Rush, Aidan Prato and Jack Pekin were among the best on ground for the home side, whilst Tom Jepson and Riley Thompson both had a fantastic outing for the victorious Old Carey, kicking five goals each to make their victory that much better. This game sees Marcellin finish the round sitting eighth, as Old Carey find themselves second, just behind the Vultures on percentage.

Round 7 is another round to keep a close eye on with many exciting match-ups awaiting. As we near the half-way mark of the season, the challenge is on all ten teams to continue putting in the effort and avoid a mid-season form slump.

AJAX host the Monash Blues, with AJAX certainly looking to break back into the top-two. Old Carey travel to Packer Park to face Glen Eira/Old McKinnon, whilst the top of the table Parkdale Vultures return to their home turf to play Mazenod.

PEGS are on the road once again to come up against the Hampton Rovers. This promises to be an exciting game with both teams making positive starts to the season. Marcellin have shown they have potential and will be looking for a victory against the winless Oakleigh who they face at Scammell Reserve.

Over the weekend some of the VAFA’s clubs celebrated “Pride Round”, coinciding with IDAHOBIT on May 17th. IDAHOBIT is an important date in the LGBTQIA community as it represents the date the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. In celebration of Pride Round, clubs including West Brunswick, Monash, MUWFC, Old Yarra Cobras, Elsternwick and Coburg turned rainbow with Pride jumpers, flags, banners, socks being worn by players in celebration of LGBTQIA Community members.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Shiralee Nicholls (Old Geelong)

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

The VAFA congratulates Shiralee Nicholls from Old Geelong Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 6 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Shiralee has made a significant impact in her first six weeks of senior football, leading the charge in the ruck predominantly on her own and she tackles every challenge with determination, which has earned her a spot in the best for her side on multiple occasions.

What the Club said:

Shiralee “Shezz” Nicholls arrived at Old Geelong, following in the footsteps of older brother Mickey. However, she is already forging her own path in the women’s team. Despite having 2 years off as a result of a knee injury suffered playing junior football, she has made an immediate impact and shows no signs of slowing down. On the field, Shezz drives a strong presence in the midfield as ruck and as the loudest girl on the field. The OGs girls love to build off her energy and enthusiasm which has placed us in a strong position this season. The past 3 weeks have seen Shezz take her game to another level, stepping up as the sole ruck due to an injury. She has taken on this challenge with an intensity and determination that is unmatched. We are so glad to have Shezz join us this season at OGs and we cannot wait to have her for more years to come.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Isaac Ellwood (Old Carey)

The VAFA congratulates Isaac Ellwood from Old Carey FC, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 6. Isaac started his season off in the Under 19’s side for Old Carey before breaking into the senior squad on the back of some star performances and has managed to not only hit the scoreboard on a number of occasions, but has also earned multiple best on ground acknowledgements.

What the club said:

Isaac is a Carey boy and one of our Under 19’s premiership players from last year – our big Europe exodus in July last year provided opportunities for players like Isaac to get a sample of senior footy, giving him and others confidence as top age unders to play with flair and poise. Issy was instrumental in his sides’ 2023 finals series (Club Finals MVP). He followed this up with a scintillating first three games in 2024, where you could plainly see he was a cut above the rest.

Since breaking into our Senior side in Round 3 he’s owned a wing. This season, he’s bigger and more prepared to embrace contact and make tackles. Isaac doesn’t have heaps to say off-field and lets his performance do the talking for him. He moves smoothly, creates space and time and finds targets.

Ormond snatch victory in second-half blitz and the Magpies are on the board

The West Brunswick Magpies get their season up and running after singing the song for the first time this season, while UHS-VU record yet another convincing win.

Ormond came from behind to beat a gallant Preston Bullants side by 8 points. The Preston Bullants welcomed nine new players to the team including captain/coach Tom Hill. The Skipper’s presence up forward clearly showed, helping his side to a four-point lead against the breeze at quarter-time. The efficiency going inside 50 was much improved with a superb performance by key forward Alex Johnston kicking two early goals in the first term.

Meanwhile, the Monders were wasteful in front of goal in the first half and were beaten in the midfield by the likes of Preston Bullants midfielder Sean Calcedo who was a clear class above. The Monders trailing by 17 points at half-time knew they needed a huge second-half and midfielder Rhys Kennedy lifted his intensity and had a huge impact around the ball.

Sam Stait had a dominant third term kicking two goals in a row and used the ball aggressively to get his team to a 10-point lead at three-quarter time. Stait appeared again kicking the first of the final quarter against the breeze and the Preston Bullants ran out of legs.

UHS-VU remains undefeated, comfortably beating Prahran by 65 points at home. The pressure from UHS-VU’s forward line was difficult for Prahran to handle in the first term. UHS-VU were always a step ahead of Prahran lengthening their 17-point lead at half-time by kicking the first six goals of the third term. Jacob Hunt starred with three goal and was adeptly supported by youngster Ned Couper-Johnston who finished the afternoon with three majors of his own.

Liam Starzer continued to impress for UHS-VU in the ruck providing great service to midfielders James Healey and Esubalew Ramsay who both had big games. Prahran’s big men Shaun Chapman and Rory Brodie gave great effort, but it wasn’t to be after a goalless third term.

The Old Peninsula Pirates got the job done over a competitive Therry Penola Lions team by 14 points. The Pirates engine room was switched on early with Kurt Thiele and Hugh Peacock leading the way as the Pirates took a 32-point lead into quarter-time. The Lions efficiency going inside 50 got them back into the game with forward Brenton Egglestone kicking four for the day and the Lions accurately kicked 11.3 for the match.

The Lions were full of confidence getting back within two goals at half-time, but the skill set of Bailey Payze was on show starring with four goals for the Pirates. Lions Jack Ford had another great game down back but the quicker spread from the contest by the Pirates was too strong.

The Parkside Devils defeated the Kew Bears by 60 points at Victoria Park. It was an even spread of contributors from the Devils with their dangerous forward line of Dominic Douglas and Jack Hamilton setting the tone in the first half. Apart from three goals for Bears’ forward Ned Waters continuing his great season, Kew struggled to connect going forward.

In comparison, the Devils’ forward line flourished with small forward Ciaran Cotter kicking the three goals as well the inform Michael Romano slotting three majors to help their side move up into second place on the ladder.

The West Brunswick Magpies brought up their first win of the season defeating the winless Old Yarra Cobras by 16 points. It was a low scoring affair in the first half with both sides only managing two goals apiece. In the second half the game began to open up and the speed from Old Yarra Cobras forward Anthony Raso proved a handful, kicking three goals as his side lead for the majority of the game.

In low scoring games you need your key players to step up and Thomas Zafiropoulos did so, slotting four of the Magpies’ nine goals. Leading for most of the game the Old Yarra Cobras will take a lot of positives out of the match, but it wasn’t to be.

Round 7 kicks off with a showdown between two contenders, as a spot in the top four becomes more competitive. Ormond will have their biggest challenge to date as they take on the undefeated UHS-VU side at E.E Gunn Reserve. The Monders will have to put in a four-quarter performance this week against a side full of confidence.

Kew and Prahran will be looking to bounce back after both suffering disappointing losses. The job of nullifying Prahran’s Shaun Chapman and Rory Brodie aerially will not be easy in a must win game for both sides.

Old Peninsula are back at home against West Brunswick who are determined to continue their journey up the ladder. The midfield of the Pirates continues to impress, and the depth of their squad will continue to strengthen as they gradually get players back.

The Preston Bullants take on the Parkside at home. The Devils may need to consider putting some attention into Sean Calcedo who is an integral part to their side’s performance and is damaging if given space.

The Old Yarra Cobras will have another good opportunity to bring up their first win of the season playing against Therry Penola. If results indicate anything, it should be one of the closest games of the round.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

Competition settles post Round 5 shake up

After last week’s competition shake up, things were a bit more settled in Division 1 Women’s this weekend, with Collegians settling into their new competition. Marcellin remain strong in second place, but it is Old Brighton that is proving to have the strongest premiership credentials at this stage of the season, seizing every opportunity to dominate in games.

Old Brighton posted an 82-point victory against Old Haileybury on Saturday morning, and had they been more accurate in front of goals the margin could have potentially been a lot larger. It was another percentageboosting win for Brighton, their percentage sitting at an insurmountable 507.89%.

A tough day out for Haileybury, who managed only 2.4 for the match. Brighton got going early on, taking a score of 46 points into the main change and registering another 52 points in the second half, not showing any signs of slowing down.

Shanelle Hodgkinson was the best on ground with two goals to her name, whilst Lily Tait starred again, kicking four goals to take her goal tally to 13 for the season. Captain India Tait was also impressive.

Haileybury captain, Isabella Scaunich shone against a formidable opponent, whilst Serene Vudiniabola kicked their only two goals. It seemed like an off day for Haileybury, who have now recorded three wins from six rounds to find themselves in fifth, only below Parkdale on percentage.

The game of the round centred around Collegians and Parkdale Vultures at Harry Trott Oval. Parkdale were searching for their third win of the season and Collegians looked to prove themselves in this competition. In a hard-fought contest where scoring shots were hard to come by, it was Parkdale who came away with a mere 3-point victory, after both sides toughed it out for the full four quarters.

It was an evenly matched contest, both teams scoring three-goals for the game in what was a low scoring affair. In the end, it was Parkdale’s behind count which ultimately got them over the line, kicking three more points than Collegians.

The Vultures’ vice-captain, Isabella Daddo, was best on ground, with a handy goal to her name. Sienna Symons was also impressive, kicking two goals. And for the Lions Maddie Smith and Chelsea McDermott starred once again, with a goal apiece to Caitlin Gait, Amelie Kamberis, and Brooke Tuszynski.

Marcellin showed why they are the reigning premiers, with a 33-point victory over Old Melburnians on Sunday afternoon. The win was made more impressive by the fact that Old Melburnians were held goalless for the entire game, stuck at the bottom of the ladder and two wins behind fifth place.

The game was consistent from Marcellin, kicking at least a goal in every quarter. Zoe Glascott had another two goals to take her tally to 19 goals for the season thus far, whilst Angie Wang Hartman was best on ground. Despite a tough day out, Sally Peers, Eloise Faulks and Clare Fraser all showed promising signs for Old Melburnians.

Next week looms as an early finals preview, with Old Brighton travelling to take on the reigning premiers and fellow flag favourites in Marcellin. This will be Marcellin’s biggest test of the season against the inform Old Brighton, who they were last defeated by in Round 4.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S

St Mary’s secure their first success of the season

As Round 6 concludes, dominant teams maintain their grip, while one team makes a terrific comeback after back-to-back losses in a thrilling week of Division 2 Men’s.

After round six, table toppers Brunswick once again prove they are the best team in the competition. At Aquinas College, Brunswick defeated Aquinas by a mammoth 74 points, with the final score 101 to 27. Brunswick’s superstar Hayden Parker once again dazzled the opposition as he kicked 5 goals. To add more spice to the game, Joe Gale, alongside Gabriel Banova of Brunswick, contributed 8 goals together. Aquinas never got a chance to dominate. After quarter time, it felt like Aquinas might make a comeback, but Brunswick’s defenders repelled every attack and dominated throughout the match.

Brunswick’s coach, Tom Hunter, expressed his happiness for the team, saying, “We wanted to stop their scoring capabilities, and we played a strong defensive-minded game.”

Talking about their star player Hayden Parker, Hunter said, “Hayden worked through coping with the attention of leading the goal-kicking. He will keep drawing that attention, but he is good enough to handle it and still kick a few goals.

Another nerve-wracking encounter occurred at Whitefriars College as the hosts, Whitefriars, outplayed Hawthorn, defeating them by 62 points. In the first quarter, Hawthorn started with a bang as they scored a quick pair of goals, but slowly and steadily, Friars began to take quick possession and kick goals to balance the game. From the second quarter, the momentum shifted toward the Friars, thanks to Sam Kiseker’s 5 goals that put them in the lead. Nicholas Garratt also booted in 4 goals. In contrast, Jack Kenny led the Hawks with his 5 goals, which weren’t enough for them to win the contest.

After the game, Hawthorn’s coach, Mark Murray said, “Whitefriars were at their best and played aggressively. We were lacking experience against them. Hopefully, we will return stronger in the next game and have a few experienced players back on the side.”

Whitefriars coach Luc Matthews said, “We have focused over the last 3 weeks on doing the basics really well, working hard for each other, and being up for every contest. We have worked hard to be accountable to each other at training, recovery and match day.

St Mary’s Salesian and South Melbourne Districts was a game to remember with St Mary’s proving that ‘The Comeback is Always Stronger Than the Setback.’ St Mary’s, who had struggled earlier in the season, outplayed South Melbourne by 66 points, winning 122 to 56. The game was fairly balanced in the first quarter, whereas the second quarter saw South Melbourne gain a slight lead of 4 points.

In the third, the St Mary’s forwards gained the support of their defence. Nicholas Alexopoulos booted the first goal of the quarter, and St Mary’s performance peaked after that. Overall, Alexopoulos kicked 4 goals, while his teammates Nathan Catherwood and Jos Op’t Hoog supported him booting 6 goals between them. South Melbourne’s Jamie Brooker kicked 3 goals, but that wasn’t enough for them to win the contest.

St Mary’s coach, Clay Tait, after their first victory in Division 2, said, “It was a huge win for us as from the start we were trying to gain the momentum. Nicholas coming in for this game boosted our young side since he is very experienced, and the team coordinated very well with him.”

Despite winning their previous game against Aquinas, Bulleen Templestowe failed to maintain momentum as hosts Elsternwick defeated them 97-64, a 33-point victory. From the first quarter, the Bullants were lagging and Elsternwick, who drew with MHSOB in the previous round, dominated every quarter, primarily thanks to Elsternwick’s vice-captain Spencer Hankin’s 5-goal haul.

After the match, Bullants coach Andrew Verga said, “We could have put more effort into the game. The boys tried their best. Now we are focusing on the next big game against Brunswick.”

After defeating the Bullants, Elsternwick coach Peter Higginbotham said, “The opposition was an excellent side, and we just wanted to keep the ball with the forwards. The only thing we did was try to play wide from the opposition.”

Wattle Park continued their winning momentum with a 78-56 victory over MHSOB, who, desperate for a victory after their draw with Elsternwick, unfortunately fell short in an exciting Round 6 clash. The Animals defeated MHSOB by 22 points.

MHSOB felt short in every quarter in this contest. Hugh Schaeche from Wattle Park kicked 2 goals, and overall, every team member contributed their efforts significantly.

MHSOB’s Will Hellier tried his best as he kicked 3 goals, but that wasn’t enough, and they fell short in the end.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Chadstone earn historic win, as Bulls become last standing unbeaten side in Div 3

After a thrilling round of Division 3 football, the finals race has opened right up as the top half of the ladder bunch together.

The round opened with a historic victory from Chadstone, securing their first win in Division 3 by overrunning Eley Park by 57 points. In a high-scoring first term, the Synners led by 14 at quarter-time. Chadstone continued their flurry of goals into the second quarter, extending to a 44-point buffer, before five consecutive goals from the Sharks brought them within two kicks.

However, a goal on the cusp of halftime by captain Anthony Brown halted the Sharks momentum and turned the game back in Chadstone’s favour, winning 129-72.

11 combined goals for Brown (6) and Ben Ogilvie (5) set Chadstone up for their first Senior win in eight years, as Joshua Kubeil, Logan Stott and Jan Barnard were named best on. Eley Park look to rebound next week at home against Power House.

Swinburne University dug deep to grind out a crucial win over rival collegiate side La Trobe University. The game hung in the balance at halftime, with the Razorbacks leading by just 13 points. A determined third quarter supressed any doubt of victory, as Swinburne headed into the final change with a 29-point. A gutsy last quarter saw La Trobe reel in the margin slightly, but Swinburne held on by 18.

Despite the loss, Jonty Randall and Lachlan Webb were defiant for La Trobe in the midfield. Four goals from Swinburne’s Nick Ferguson were vital, as Tyson Wiegold, Declan Watts, and Zachary Cooke were best on ground. The Razorbacks will look to make it three in a row next week against Albert Park.

The battle of the undefeated was slated as an epic blockbuster, and it did not disappoint. In a seven-point thriller, it was North Brunswick who came from behind once again to spoil the Power House party.

Power House kicked off to a 15-point quarter-time lead, however the Bulls reigned it in to just five points by the main break. In a low-scoring third term, just three goals were scored, as Power House slightly increased their margin to nine. However, the Bulls worked their magic again for another unbelievable close victory.

Goals from Keenan Van Hees and Nick Dimarco put North Brunswick in front before Power House’s Sean Scotland nailed a major just 90 seconds later to regain the lead.

The game was then tied at 58 apiece after two North Brunswick behinds, and a draw looked on the cards. However, another behind from Mitch Hicks and a sealing goal from Adrian Sipala put an end to Power House’s unbeaten streak, whilst simultaneously keeping the Bulls’ own alive.

Keanan Van Hees, Noah Young and Cameron Lee were amongst the Bulls best in, whilst Power House’s best included Tyler Ames, Rob Dyer and Kieran Wotherspoon, who kicked three goals. An encounter with La Trobe awaits North Brunswick, as their undefeated run will once again be challenged.

Richmond Central’s season is back on track after a consistent effort rewarded a 45-point victory over Albert Park. The Snakes had three 5-goal terms, with the footy shared around amongst ten individual goal kickers.

After a commanding first quarter from Richmond Central, Albert Park doggedly fought back to reduce the margin to 11 points at halftime. The Snakes regained their firstquarter form for the second half though, as Albert Park struggled to defend their attack.

Henry Spurr, Charles Spring and Eric Nelson earned best on ground nominations, as the Snakes rise to seventh on the Div 3 ladder. Albert Park tumbles to 2-4, and their upcoming match against Swinburne looms crucial to turning the corner in 2024.

Canterbury have reminded the competition of their quality, rinsing Box Hill North by 85-points. The tone was set from the opening siren, as the Cobras scored

52-1 in the first term. The Demons fought with dignity in the second and third quarters, allowing Canterbury to only tally an additional 17 points to the margin.

The Cobras class prevailed in the fourth quarter, kicking away to a dominant victory. Brad Kelleher (5) and Tom Lowden (4) combined for nine majors, assisting a percentage-boosting win for Canterbury. Aaron D’Amato, Sean Donovan and Corey Bull were best on for Box Hill North. The Demons, who are the last yet to secure a victory this season, will look to reset following the bye next round.

With four teams separated by purely percentage, every match has significance in Round 7.

North Brunswick host La Trobe as they aim to extend their unbeaten run for another week. St John’s return from the bye with an epic encounter against the red-hot Canterbury. This match could be an early finals preview, with either side contending for a top ladder position.

Eley Park face off against Power House, with both teams coming off losses. The Sharks are aiming to end their fourgame losing streak, whilst Power House will want to amend their first loss of the year.

Chadstone host Richmond Central in an underrated clash. Chadstone are finding form, and with confidence following their first win, they could challenge the Snakes at home. Swinburne close out the round against Albert Park. The Falcons are desperate for a win to turn their season around, so expect a physical contest. Box Hill North have the bye in Round 7.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

Old Brighton toppled whilst Uni Blues win in a thriller

Round 7 of the Holmesglen U19’s Premier Men’s competition was a defining round. A round that showcased the immense talent of the league, and just how evenly skewed the competition is.

The first matchup of the round delivered a monumental upset, with Old Xaverians toppling Old Brighton on Saturday morning, bringing their winning streak to a grinding halt. Entering the contest undefeated in 2024, Old Brighton were stunned by a determined Old Xavier outfit, hellbent on stamping their authority over the competition.

With a quarter to play, the Old Xaverians held a slim 2-point lead. A mature performance would see the side kick 5 goals to Old Brighton’s 4 in the final quarter, to close with an all-important win on a tight ladder.

Old Brighton’s captain Jonah Campigili stood tallest, slotting a whopping 6 goals in a loss, a magnificent attempt to drag his team over the finish line. Ultimately the effort wasn’t enough, the opposition running away as 10-point winners.

For the victors, Harry Bird, Thomas Gorman, Tom Bourne, Charlie Christopher, Xavier Austin and Nick Honeyman were pivotal in the win.

A small hiccup, Old Brighton still remain atop the Holmesglen U19’s Premier ladder, with Old Scotch and Old Xavierians a game behind, nipping at the heels.

In the second match of the round, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers eased past Beaumaris, winning by 58 points.

Even at a goal apiece at the quarter time break, it was the Tigers who ran rampant over the Sharks at Banksia Reserve for the remainder of the contest. Jude Fountain led the onslaught slotting 3 goals for the game.

Josh Pitara, Simon Taylor, Rhett Fernando, Jude McCormack, Thomas Aughterson and Ethan Hall were named best afield for the victors, whilst Ned Bodi, Saxon McLennan and Elliot Styles impressed for Beaumaris.

St Bedes are now within striking distance to make a bid for a top four spot and will be looking to carry the momentum from a strong win.

Later in the day, De La Salle fell to Williamstown CYMS, despite leading for a majority of the game. An agonising defeat, it is the second week in a row that De La Salle has lost in such fashion. It was Joshua Stewart, Samuel Cross, Ethan MacBeth and Max Miller, who impressed throughout the contest.

Jasper Taylor, Samuel Shepherd, Xavier Snelling, Jack wheeler, Josh Neville and Andreas Martinez put in strong performances to give Williamstown its second win for 2024.

De La is showing strong signs of securing those illustrious first four points as they edge ever so close to victory in recent matches.

In a relatively low-scoring affair Williamstown showed resilience as a team to get themselves back into the game despite the deficit they faced for 3 quarters. This will put them in good stead with their confidence levels back up after a few tough losses in a row.

Continuing their strong form, Old Scotch cruised past Caulfield Grammarians in a comfortable 49-point victory on Saturday afternoon.

Caulfield struggled to get going in this match up, recording a single behind in the first quarter to put them well behind the eight ball. Scotch started to motor from there and the Grammarians were too far gone to catch up. They will be looking to get back on the winners list and find their top form.

Hamish Jones, Jake Phillips, Matthew Mayes, Henry Long, Freddie Leeton, James Davies dazzled for the victors. Scotch shared plenty of the footy amongst their ten individual goal kickers, spearheaded by the reliable James Davies who has soared to second place on the competition’s leading goal kicker tally. With the win, Old Scotch affirm themselves as strong contenders in 2024.

The final matchup of the round proved to be the most exhilarating, with University Blues outlasting a gallant St Kevin’s, winning by just two points. Trailing for a large quantity of the day, The Blue boys entered three quarter time behind. Requiring a significant effort in the final term, the Blues seized the moment in authoritative fashion to trump the old foe.

A low scoring affair throughout the day, both sides showcased flashes of brilliance. Henry Meggitt was named best afield for the Blues, with Willem Sanders, Oliver Sleiman, Carl Ziebarth, Lachlan Rees and Luca Di Lallo also performing well.

For St Kevin’s, a hint of disappointment lingers. Hudson Lefoe, George Delimitrou, Liam Edwards led the charge late in the game, yet failed to overcome.

Looking ahead, St Kevin’s will be hoping to bounce back next week, when they face the winless De La Salle. Old Brighton will be looking to maintain their 1 game buffer at the top of the table with a win in their home-ground matchup against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers.

Meanwhile Caulfield Grammarians will host Williamstown CYMS at Glen Huntly Park in an even tussle. And Old Scotch will travel to play the University Blues with a win carrying such significance at this stage of journey with a tight ladder.

Last weekend’s results set up a tantalising contest this Friday night, when Beaumaris meet the rampaging Old Xavierians under lights at Banksia Reserve in what could be the match of the round.

MILESTONES

Tara Chetcuti (Coburg)

50

50

50

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Reserves captain Tara Chetcuti will be the first women’s player to reach the 50 game milestone. Being an inaugural player from our first season in 2021, Tara has held leadership roles for the last 3 seasons, played in our grand final appearance last season and has been a podium finisher in our 2022 B&F count.

Charlotte Croome (La Trobe University)

Congratulations to La Trobe’s Charlotte Croome on reaching 50 games. Char first joined the ‘Trobers in 2017 and is in her 6th season after playing all but a handful of games as an ever-reliable defender in the Senior Women’s side. Following a big 2024 preseason, Char has transitioned into the midfield and has had an incredible start to the season! Well done Char on joining a select group of 18 ‘Trober women who have played 50 games in the red & black!

Zac Pahos (Masala Dandenong)

Zac joined Masala in 2021 and immediately showed himself to be a true character that had a positive and team first mentality. During the beginning of the 2022 season Zac then took a leap in his game as he heavily featured in the senior side for the next few seasons! In 2024 Zac has become a more wellrounded player and has seen his team spirit rewarded with a place in the senior leadership group! We are thrilled for Zac that he’s reached 50 games in the yellow and black and we look forward to many more exciting moments! 50

Will Green (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

Congratulations Greeny on reaching 50 games. A 2022 McKinnon Secondary College graduate, Greeny played a pivotal role in the 2023 Division 1 Premiership team. The young tyro is setting the standards that our club needs after returning to Premier football for the first time in two decades. A tough as nails player who is just as happy bursting through packs as he is running to receive clearing handballs, we look forward to Greeny lighting up Packer Park for many years to come.

Lachlan Pound (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

Congratulations to Lachlan Pound on playing 150 games. A two time Best & Fairest winner and member of the 2016 & 2018 Division 3 and 2023 Division 1 Premiership team, the man known as P-Town gave almighty headaches to opposition coaches in every one of his 150 games. An elite runner and blessed with exquisite skills on both sides of his body, it often took until after half time to work out which was his dominant side, if the opposition could work it out at all. The new dad has now met his match with daughter Lillian the only tag he can’t shake! We look forward to seeing one of our best ever at Packer Park for Premiership Reunions in the future.
