The Amateur Footballer 2023 - Week 2

SEASON 2023 - April 22

It was great to see VAFA footy return to grounds all over Melbourne last weekend. The 2023 season was launched at The Park Melbourne on Wednesday12th April, where 250 Club representatives and stakeholders gathered to celebrate the commencement of our 131st season.

We were immensely grateful that Andy Gowers, former premiership player with both Old Xaverians (VAFA) and Hawthorn (AFL), stepped in as the key guest speaker. Andy is the current Hawthorn President, a former Big V Amateur representative and father of Billy who is playing with Old Xaverians this year, and it was great to hear his experiences with and continued passion for the VAFA competition, along with the insights into his current challenges in his AFL Club role.

A number of important acknowledgements were made on the night. Certificates of Merit were awarded to the following Club representatives who have given terrific service to their Clubs: Chris Swinburne (St Johns), Dean Lovig (Hampton Rovers), John Hands (Old Carey), Trevor Ludeman (Brunswick FC) & Tim Shearer (Old Scotch). Former Old Scotch President and current Hawthorn Director Tim Shearer, responded with a wonderful speech on behalf of all the recipients. Also on the night, we recognised the service given by our media volunteers from Inner FM, who, up to a few seasons back, were the radio broadcasts of Amateur football for 25 years. Michael Fitzgerald spoke passionately on the work done by his colleagues from this era.

When I travel to the various Clubs I am always impressed by the stories of the long and dedicated service given by so many passionate volunteers. Our Director Phil Stevens, himself the longest serving GM of the VAFA, is running a project to recognise worthy individuals through their name being applied to the remaining list of unnamed awards and facilities that the VAFA manages.

Notice has been put out to all Clubs to submit their nominations for this recognition, and I encourage you to check that your Club has acted on this so that no worthy individual is overlooked in our considerations. Read more about this initiative in the ‘For the Love of the Game’ pages.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our Clubs

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our Clubs and the opportunity to recognise them is a wonderful way to show them how valued they are.

On behalf of all our Clubs and VAFA competition, I sincerely thank all our volunteers for your immense and selfless contributions that you continue to make each day.

In the lead up to ANZAC Day, we remember and honour the thousands of VAFA members, players and their family members who sacrificed their lives to give us our freedoms today.

Finally, Directors Anthony Amad and Frank Dunell presented Life Membership awards (that were passed by the Members at the last AGM), to Michael Crooks and Glenn Scarborough, for their long-term service in promoting the VAFA through their media work. Both men now join an exclusive group of 35 living life members and expressed their pride in receiving this recognition.

ANZAC ceremonies in conjunction with RSL Clubs are being held at many VAFA venues this weekend. It is a time for reflection and to acknowledge the sacrifices of the servicemen and women of Australia and the part so many of our VAFA community have played.

Australian Rules Football has been a driving force in commemorating and remembering our fallen comrades, across this weekend, we will remember them.

Lest we forget

The biggest VAFA rivalry headlines this weekend’s action

Rivalry: competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field.

That is the official definition in the dictionary. This Saturday, after 2,121 days, we get to see the VAFA’s biggest rivalry play out at Melbourne University between University Blues and University Blacks.

The last chapter in this storied history was written in Round 11 of the 2017 season.

Uni Blacks have completed the last three seasons to have been played in heartbreaking fashion. Losing Preliminary Finals in Premier B in 2018 and 2019, whilst falling short to Old Haileybury in this year’s Premier B Grand Final. All by less than a goal.

To rub salt into the wounds, their cross-change room rivals claimed the William Buck Premier Men’s title in 2019 to take bragging rights at the Melbourne Uni.

Last week in their return to William Buck Premier, Blacks got the jump on Old Brighton before being pegged back as the afternoon unfolded. University Blues opened up with a victory at Elsternwick Park.

Ayce Cordy will face Josh Steadman in the battle of the big men. Marty Gleeson will be in defence aiming to stop Nick Hey. Don’t discount the match ups of Vescio and Bennett, against Furphy and Ziebart, while I’m sure Lachie Knight and Dane Crognale will cross paths throughout the afternoon.

Dale Bower vs. Guy Martyn in the coaches box, Marto thrives in big contests with all eyes on his side, Bower is a defensive master and his team will be up for this challenge.

Blues will come into the game having won the last six encounters. Blacks last tasted success over the Blues in Round 10 of 2013. They won’t want the losing drought to continue any longer.

A much more “respectful” rivalry will take place at Camberwell Sports Ground. Old Scotch play host to Collegians in their annual Anzac weekend match. The traditional pre-game ceremony, with the Cardinals in their Anzac jumpers, will be looking to turn the tables on the Lions who walked away winners at The Cave in 2022.

Should Ben Woodful not be elevated to the VFL this week for Williamstown, he will face off against Sam Grant, 201cm tall made his senior debut in the opening round and was pivotal in Old Scotch’s opening round victory.

Jack Polkinghorne, Henry Brown and Jack McCorkle are three faces to look out for outside Andy Jelbart, Aidan Franetic, and James Tarrant who regularly perform week-in, week-out.

Mark Gnatt may have a sleepless night on Friday leading into the contest. Firstly, for the excitement he’ll have about this game, secondly, with questions swirling around to stop the King. Kenny Ong, was a cut above at Xavier College in the wet. He needed only a metre of space and was able to produce high quality disposals. Supported by Daniel Orgill, and Gentleman Jim Bazzani. It’s set to be a ding-dong battle in the midfield.

Teigan Otter, the Anytime Fitness Round 1 Rising Star nominee will almost certainly become the third tall option in the forward line with co-captain Dave Mirra set to be available and come back in. Mirra, Greene and Otter. One thing we know for sure, Old Scotch won’t take a backward step, or be overawed by the challenge that awaits.

Old Xaverians and Old Melburnians can battle it out for the unofficial ‘longevity cup’ on Saturday at Xavier College.

Xav’s in their 100th year, OM’s in their current form, joined the competition 103 years ago. To add a bit of extra spice to the contest, for us media types to discuss in the Saturday Warm-Up and on For the Love of the Game.

Current OM’s coach Paul Satterley comes up against the side he coached in 2019, Old Xaverians. It will mean nothing to Satts, or to Old Xav’s. But, what will mean more, is the four points on the line.

With the competition so even, the loser of this game falls to 0-2 and by default part of the chasing pack. It’s not a position you want to be in.

The red and black mafia debuted five players in the opening round, barring 40 minutes during the second and third terms, they held their own. Tommy McCrae is a handy talent, Harrison Bell was busy in the forward line, Ned Niall did some nice things with the ball in hand. Harry Woodhouse kicked two goals, and Darcy Feutrill put his head in the hole without needing to be prompted.

ROUND 2 TIPS

Old Brighton v Old Haileybury

Old Scotch v Collegians

St Kevin’s v Caulfield Grammarians

Old Xaverians v Old Melburnians

University Blues v University Blacks

In the old dark navy blues camp, Jackson Paine will be a focal point alongside Ed Michelmore and Tom Baker. Jacob Thompson will be better for the opening round run, while the Haysman boys (and Nichols) are more likely to use the corridor of the College given the narrow wings in comparison to Elsternwick Park.

In Round 13 of 2011, Caulfield Grammarians turned up to T H King against St Kevin’s and claimed victory by a solitary point. The victory seemingly displaced SKOB from finishing that year on top of the ladder.

Since then the sides have met 11 times. St Kevin’s have won all 11. Perhaps there were discussions like Geelong had after Jeff Kennett accused them of not having the psychological drive, and losing when it matters.

Heart-to-heart discussions may have followed? And from that moment on, until now the reigning Premiers haven’t faulted against the Fields.

Old Haileybury served it up to Plugger Lynch’s men on Saturday. A very early season scare to show how even William Buck Premier is may jolt the Kings of the T H King into action. Saturday will be a festival of fun for the club, unveiling both Senior men and Women premiership flags, plus the Women’s thirds pennant.

The midfield duo of Jok and Winter, who performed strongly through 2022 were at it again, as well as Cal Matheson, Harry Wardlaw and Josh Wallis in his first game back with the club since 2021.

Caulfield Grammarians had patches of strong footy against Old Scotch. Jack Webster (2 goals) and was named amongst the best. Tom O’Sullivan, Will Kennedy and Oscar Roberts all had moments throughout the game.

Guy McKenna and the Fields will need to be at their very best if they are to challenge St Kevin’s on Saturday.

The last time Old Brighton and Old Haileybury met in the VAFA’s topflight was in 2007. Some 16 years in the making. The year after Old Haileybury won their most recent A-Section title.

It’s been a long time between drinks, having met throughout the years since in Premier B. Hostilities will be renewed at Brighton Beach Oval with the Tonners looking to inflict another loss on the 2022 Premier B champions.

Dan Donati had to scrap his way to victory after Uni Blacks got the jump on the Tonners in week one. They’ll be looking for a faster start at home. Daniel Ward’s men finished strongly against St Kevin’s, this time around, they’re on the road and will want to make an impact early.

Without Will Lewis on Saturday, Jamie Hope led the charge with three goals, the rest were a spread of seven goalkickers. Harry Hill and Alfie Jarnestrom from the midfield were part of the best players and Tom Yorgey across half back was pivotal.

Anthony “Plugger” Lynch paid credit to Old Haileybury on For the Love of the Game this week “They were really impressive, their work rate, they worked incredibly hard and they worked for each other” and feels like they’ll be strong in challenging the best sides in the competition.

Having just fallen short of the reigning Premiers in week one, can they go one step further against the runners up in week two?

Snowdogs and Fitzroy prove insurmountable as Premier B Men’s kicks off in style

Premier B footy is in full swing after a wet and windy start to the season. There were some big wins across the board in premier B Men’s which has raised some eyebrows and has already rattled the competition early.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers began season 2023 in flying form with a 40-point win over Ajax. Trailing at quarter time, the tigers hit their straps during the second term booting four goals to one to claim a handy 16 point lead. The second half saw the Tigers pull away and up forward it was James Mangoni and Brayden O’Toole who both hit the scoreboard each kicking four majors for the afternoon. Meanwhile for Ajax, Kane Nissenbaum was sharp in front of goal as he kicked three goals to get his year underway. The next big test for SBMT will be this week as they play Beaumaris and its tipped to be a belter with the Sharks also registering a round one win.

The biggest win of the round came from Fitzroy at the Brunswick Street Oval with a huge 95-point win over last years Premier C premiers, Monash Blues. The Blues were kept goalless in the first half of football and finished with just one major for the afternoon. It was certainly a tough beginning for the Blues, and they have a massive round two clash against last years runner up for Premier C, Old Geelong. Meanwhile, it was a positive start for the Roys with 10 individual goal kickers for the afternoon. It’s a blistering start to the season for Fitzroy after they finished fourth last year and lost in the first week of finals to last years premiers Haileybury.

This week St Bernard’s also recorded a significant win beating Williamstown CYMS to the tune of 89 points. The Snow Dogs kicked 21 goals for the afternoon with 14 of them coming from the first half. St Bernard’s midfielder Ben Huggard was best on ground for the Snow Dogs with 28 disposals and three goals. Meanwhile, Luke Di Lizio and Dom Sullivan each kicked three goals. The Snow Dogs have a proven track record with rebounding after relegation and they started this season off magnificently. This week, they head to their home ground, the Snake Pit, against De La Salle.

Meanwhile, Old Geelong kicked off their 2023 campaign with a tight loss to Beaumaris at Como Park. The Sharks flew out of the blocks to begin with six goals in the opening term and keeping Geelong to just the one behind. From quarter time, Geelong were able to cut the margin and keep the Sharks to just one goal in the second quarter. Three quarter time saw the game hanging in the balance with just one point separating the two sides before Beaumaris kicked away in the final term to win by 16 points. It was a productive start for Geelong who come up from Premier C and they can take a mountain of confidence into their grand final rematch against Monash Blues in round two. Connor Murphy was clinical on field for the Sharks as he was named amongst the best with star midfielder Jack Nardino kicking two majors for the afternoon.

The final game to complete round one was De La Salle and Trinity with premiership points heading the way of De La Salle. This was always going to be a fascinating game to see how Trinity would fair in their opening Premier B game. For Old Trinity, Hugo McGlashan, Sam Mason, Charles Beasley, and George Belcher will be utilised by Coburg in the VFL and it seemed they may be lacking on field presence with their absence. Of Course, they were aided by star ruckman Harry Thompson, but it wasn’t enough with De La Salle powering away to a 48-point win. It was a busy day down forward for Trent Shannon who provided potency with six goals and a best on ground performance and for De La Salle, their round one performance will give them a world of confidence for what could be an exciting year.

So, what can we look forward to this weekend.

Round two promises to be absolutely huge with fascinating matchups in each Premier B game. The Premier C grand final rematch will see Old Geelong travel out to Monash and they’ll be looking to claim bragging rights after the disappointment of last season. Monash Blues will have to respond in a big way after their disheartening start and this is a major test for them early on in the season.

Ajax will host Old Trinity with both teams coming off a loss to begin the season. Trinity will have to lift if they are to overcome Ajax and but it is such a pivotal game for both clubs with the loser having to confront two early season loses which can be extremely deflating.

After both teams gaining major recruits over the off season, Beaumaris and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers shapes up to be an intriguing contest. It could very well be match of the round and it’s a major test for the Tigers to prove themselves to the rest of the competition that they are and will be a major threat.

Meanwhile the final two games will see traditional Anzac rivals take to the field with Fitzroy to host Williamstown CYMS and De La Salle to travel to the Snake Pit to face on St Bernard’s with both games having the potential to be close encounters.

Premier C Men’s action officially kicked off on the weekend with some strong footy played across the board in wet and greasy conditions.

Old Ivanhoe showed their firepower and opened their account with a strong win on the road at Gerry Green Reserve against a plucky Parkdale side. In a contest full of ebbs and flows, the Vultures got their beaks in front early but the visitors were good enough to lead at the first change after what was an even first quarter.

Jarrod Gieschen’s men were good enough to open up a 20-point margin in the second term as they unveiled their scoring weapons and did so whilst keeping Parkdale to just one major in the term.

At the halftime break the signs looked ominous for the home side, but to their credit, they fought back brilliantly, holding the surging Old Ivanhoe scoreless in the third period. To cap off what was a brilliant premiership quarter for Owen Lalor’s men, they also slammed on three goals of their own to march back into the contest. Ryan Macdermid was providing a real spark for the Vultures, doing his best to push them towards the comeback win, and it looked likely as they led by a solitary point at the final change of ends.

However, in the final term, Old Ivanhoe found their potent weaponry again, kicking five goals to three in the last to come away with a 17-point victory. Powell was judged best afield, while Murphy contributed four goals on the afternoon for the winners, Macdermid finished with four goals and a best-on-ground nod for Parkdale. Old Ivanhoe will now face Old Camberwell, while Parkdale will take on PEGS.

The Hampton Rovers started their quest for post-season glory beautifully, closing out a nice win over Marcellin by 20 points at Marcellin College. The match was tight early, as both sides got a feeling for one another, just five scoring shots were registered in the first term. Play opened up in the second term as inaccuracy started to creep into both camps, the travelling Rovers taking a sixpoint lead into the main break.

Despite the two sides finishing at opposite ends of the ladder in 2022, their first meeting of 2023 remained tight throughout the first three periods, thanks to some missed chances but also to some outstanding defence from the hosts who generated enough momentum to take a slim two-point lead into the final change.

Unfortunately though, inaccuracy was Marcellin’s biggest killer, robbing them of an opportunity to stay in the contest all the way through, as the Rovers booted four unanswered goals to seal the win, 9.9.63 to 5.13.43.

Roberts was announced best on ground, while Gray and Cairns combined for four goals.

Capetola was Marcellin’s best alongside his teammate McArdle who slammed home two goals himself. Marcellin will now go on the road to face Mazenod, while the Rovers host Ormond.

Last year’s Division 1 men’s runner up Old Camberwell has extended Old Carey’s losing streak , handing them a six-goal loss to start their season at Gordon Barnard Reserve. Desperate to prove themselves and fight for redemption, the Panthers struggled from the outset, going goalless in the opening stanza and then wading into a storm of inaccuracy kicking a disappointing three goals and twelve behinds.

Old Camberwell took full advantage of this and led by Verbi’s best on ground performance and Powell’s four majors were good enough to extend their lead every quarter and jump out to the 36-point win.

Old Carey’s effort isn’t to be discounted though, they kept the game close for three quarters, never really allowing the lead to stretch until the final term, they were led well by Ogilvie and Mitch Wooffindin who kicked two of their three goals. The Panthers will now head into a bye week, while Old Camberwell will face Old Ivanhoe.

Freshly promoted after winning the Division 1 flag, PEGS looked primed to ride their momentum and make a strong early statement in Premier C, and that’s exactly what they did at PEGS Sporting Fields.

After an even first quarter, preseason fancies Mazenod were bamboozled by a six-goal PEGS avalanche in the second, which ultimately set up their path to victory perfectly. Andrew Horne’s men, as they have been for over a season now, were superb at both ends, allowing just four Mazenod goals while pouring on 12 of their own.

It’s only early days, but the PEGS train is roaring, and this 52-point win over the ‘Nodders’ will do just about nothing in the way of stopping it. Five individuals kicked two majors on the afternoon for PEGS, including Jarvis and Saggio while Hannah was adjudged best afield, Lovell fought hard for Mazenod, alongside D’Angelo who slotted two goals. The now, ladder leading PEGS will roll on against Parkdale this week, while Mazenod will look to bounce back against Marcellin.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

Bridget Hudson

After a thrilling Round 1, The VAFA congratulates Bridget Hudson from Melbourne University Women’s Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination from the season’s opening weekend.

What the club said:

As a club we are stoked for Reg! She’s a player to watch this season, a quiet achiever and so deserving of this nomination. Bridget “Reg” Hudson joined the Mugars early in the preseason and has rarely missed a session. She’s leaned into the club culture, even pulling on the goal umpire coat for our Thirds prior to playing on Sunday afternoon!

Sunday’s match was her Senior Football debut as a 17 year old, having played all her junior football with Banyule JFC, during which she was twice selected into the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Representative Games (Interleague) for the Yarra Junior Football League.

We’re sure there are many more moments to come for her and we can’t wait to see what she achieves next.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Teigan Otter

The VAFA congratulates Teigan Otter, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination from the season’s opening weekend, Otter kicked three goals in Collegians victory over Old Xaverians to start their 2023 campaign in William Buck Premier.

What the club said:

Teigan is a product of Wesley College Football program and has now been out of school for a couple of years. It has taken Teigan until this year to play his first senior game at Collegians and kicked a goal with his first kick in the Seniors.

Teigan has had to overcome some injuries and every time he was about to get selected he either had an injury or was going away on holidays. Credit to Teg’s this pre season he dedicated himself to get fit and his football is now at the standard we all knew he was capable of.

He goal sense is very good and he has a great capacity to find space on the forward line where normally you can never find space. Being the nephew of Collegians great Simon Arnott he has big shoes to fill but is well on the way to having a great career at Collegians and follow in his Uncles footsteps.

He is part of a great family something we treasure at Collegians and Teigan is now forging his own great times at the club and is sure to become a permanent fixture in the Collegians forward line for many years to come.

LIVE COVERAGE THIS WEEK

Wet weather provides mixed results and classics throughout round 1

Division 1 is back, and boy did it deliver some crazy results over the weekend. The weather proved to be a factor at some grounds around the division with a few results producing some very low scoring games.

A highlight was the 2022 Grand Final Rematch from newcomers Ivanhoe and West Brunswick, and seeing a classic unfold between Old Peninsula and Therry Penola. So, with that in mind let’s get stuck into it.

2022 Division 2 Grand Finalist and newcomers into Division 1 Ivanhoe and West Brunswick delivered a belter at Ivanhoe Park on Saturday evening. This night game has been a regular clash between these two sides.

The Magpies raced out of the blocks starting with three opening quarter goals that set the tone for the game. With the usual suspects shining for the pies like Josh Elston being a real competitor all game.

Ivanhoe then mounted a comeback in the second and third quarters with Close, O’Brien, Hunt all getting into the action by kicking crucial goals to keep them in the game. West Brunswick needed to answer to keep them back in the game and star forward Jacob Hyslop delivered on that and guided his team home winning a low scoring thriller kicking the final two goals helping them win by ten points. Over at Packer Park the much-anticipated match up Glen Eira and Kew Bears took place. The Gryphons started strongly against the Bears, kicking four goals in the opening term, which ultimately was the momentum required to see them home, as it turned into a hard slog after quarter time, as the Bears found it difficult to convert in front of goals, finishing the game with a goalless.

Glen Eira had players such as Johnston, Chilcott, Smith-Cameron and Carey dominating most of the game which helped them over the line. Bears coach Ian Aitken will be hoping to see a better performance for the Bears next week.

Old Peninsula took on Therry Penola in a classic at the Harry McDonald Oval, the first half dominated by the Lions

as they took it to the home team storming to a solid five goal lead at half time with Turner, Trimble, and Egglestone firing for the Lions. The next half was a complete turnaround from Old Peninsula producing zero goals, six behinds at half time. It was always going to be backs to wall football as they mounted a serious comeback that saw them gather momentum.

Initially slow going in the third quarter, it was really the last quarter that saw Old Peninsula stormed their way to victory. Lovett, Baczyk, Payza were all influence the turning of the game but forward Hillman kicking two crucial goals to see the Old Peninsula home from nowhere to win by eight points.

Over at the W.A Scammell Reserve Oakleigh battled it out against Prahran in a high scoring belter. The two teams trying to be back in finals for the first time in a while and it delivered. Prahran threw the first punches as they took a five-point margin into quarter time and from there the game swung to either side going goal for goal.

The forwards from either side took it to new heights as Aaron Cloke and Ashen booted seven goals for Oakleigh between them, whilst Prahran full forward Matt Clifford pounded five goals. Three quarter time it was still anyone’s game at 54 a piece with Oakleigh kicking more points than goals. The game went right down to the wire as Oakleigh got home kicking six goals in the final term seeing them get to a nine-point wine.

The final game saw Preston Bullants and UHS-VU take centre stage in Division 1 for the first time since 2019 at the W.R Ruthven Reserve. UHS-VU deadeye accuracy in the first term kicking six straight goals to one. UHS-VU had stars all over the park forwards Urie and McGee kicked their way to see UHS-VU take the first half.

They didn’t stop there as Preston were not able to match them, but they did have players like McLoed, Malkioun and Howard try help them over the line. However, this wasn’t enough as a strong UHS-VU side took full control of the whole game, taking victory over Preston.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S

Rain or shine, the return of VAFA footy left nothing to the imagination in an exhilarating first round. A comeback of dreams to a thrashing of nightmares, VAFA footy is off to the races as the fight for Division 2 Men’s begins.

Brunswick soared to a fairy tale start to the season with a 26-point victory over the Old Paradians. Already five men down and a late out from skipper Ben Wilson, a disheartening first quarter didn’t leave much room for hope against the talent of Old Paradians who booted two consecutive goals. Coming out with a bang in the first 20 minutes of the second quarter, Brunswick had much of the footy winning clearances and giving opportunities to forwards for slippery one on one contests.

Brunswick however responded capitalising on errors and kicking valuable late goals towards the end of the first half. Second half Old Paradians came out strong, smart forwards and even smarter goals from stand out players such as Thomson who kicked three overall.

Brock and Colomer’s expertise added to the pressure, but Brunswick bounced back late in the third. Whether it was whatever is in the Brunswick waters or the fire in Tommy Hunter’s words, Brunswick refused to take no for an answer punting six goals in the last quarter.

Wiping the hard earned sweat off his brow, Hunter attributed the win to the determination and reliability of Lewis Bonney-McKenzie off half back in partnership with Jake Ralston and Harris Mitter, the as per usual talent from Banova and the lift from young gun Gus Ross on ball. Clean forwards Haddad, Coverdale, and new addition Horan each had two goals a piece with Tom Wilson who filled the weighted boots of stand in captain perfectly kicking two as well.

For a team to come back against the talent filled Old Paradians in lively fashion, the young and fiery Brunswick are looking forward to their next challenge against the mighty Cobras in round 2.

The Old Yarra Cobras set the tone for the season leaving a shuddering echo of domination after a 70-point win at the snake pit over Aquinas. Three goals from Dwyer and two from Glennie and Box, in addition to Wright and Donato’s run and carry couldn’t keep up with the avalanche of the Cobras.

The detail-oriented game plan paid off as the Cobras star studded midfield, Cook, Falkingham and Tokatliyan, won the majority of the tough wet weather ball gets. The domination of the middle left ample opportunity for forwards to lock it in their fifty, Margaritis booting five and leading the division goal tally, star new addition Sambevski kicking four with Young and Stacker punting three apiece.

Overall, an impressive round 1 from the Cobras, they proved comfortable in wet conditions and will be looking to continue their start to a winning streak.

A comfortable 27-point victory over Parkside on their home deck confirmed the Whitefriars are here to make a mark in Division 2. Ball getters Hamilton and Romano capitalised providing much opportunity for contest in the Demons forward line, but it was clear accuracy became a clear issue in tandem with the wet weather footy, of which the Friars didn’t seemed to mind rain or shine.

Hands and Massarotti had a blinder with the help of young gun Pat Cotter to provide opportunity for forward pressure resulting in Berry, Wood and Kieseker kicking three each. For excited fans, the Friars are ones to keep a keen eye on with strong ball movement both offensively and defensively.

St Mary’s Salesian fought hard at Ferndale Park, but the consistent bloods sent the Saints home packing. Although outstanding performance from Evans booting four and Elliston three, South Melbourne Districts key players such as Jones and Armenia, left the Saints scarred in addition to stand out players Smith and Brooker punting three each, and Sfetkidis and Bradford with two. Overall, the Swans have shown a convincing performance and placed a well-deserved dent in Division 2.

A close first quarter left the game up for grabs between MSHOB and Bullen Templestowe, however the Bullants were allowed to wander increasing their lead every quarter thereafter. Wilson, Cook and Eimutis demonstrated tough physicality and ball movement, but couldn’t keep up against the likes of Mohandas and O’Connor.

Luscisano’s flair created havoc for the Unicorn’s backline after three goals in partnership with Cherbakof’s three. A confident first push to the seasons for the Bullants can serve as a steppingstone for something great for the remains of the season.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Power on the mind: Division Three welcomes newcomers in style

You never quite know what you’re going to get when teams rise and fall into new divisions, but if Power House is anything to go by, it’s that they were one division up for a reason.

Coming out swinging against last year’s grand finalists in Division 4, the men from St Kilda set out to make a statement, destroying Swinburne by a staggering 82 points. Coach Jeff Scotland and his men walked into Ross Gregory Oval on Saturday with one thing on their minds: to prove to the competition that they are the force to be reckoned with.

Opening with an onslaught of six goals in the first quarter, the team led by the boot of Michael Timms left no stone unturned with relentless pressure and a barrage of inside fifties that left the backline of Swinburne out on their feet for all four quarters.

For Power House, the win is more than just this Division 3 result. The club has registered wins for the Seniors, Reserves, and Women’s side all in one day, and amazingly they were alone in this feat.

After a name change for the 2023 season, the Wattle Park Animals released the beast across the board, recording wins for every side. However, it was their big win over last year’s second-best side in Elsternwick that capped off a magical Sunday.

Led by Harry Davis, the animals were tested by Elsternwick with sleeting rain and Melbourne’s classic cold Saturday’s, showing no signs of slowing the scoring of each side.

It was as back and forth as we saw a game on the weekend, with Elsternwick sitting three points ahead at the first change with Wattle Park booting five behinds. From there, the accuracy for the animals didn’t get much better, registering 6 behinds in the second before steadying and finding the big sticks in the second half.

It went down to the wire at Bennettswood sport ground, but in the end, the Animals managed to outlast a fighting Elsternwick to get up by just eight points in the season opener. Although eight doesn’t seem like much, the Animals booted 16 points, which I’m sure coach Glenn Hopkins will be addressing ahead of their round two matchup against Powerhouse.

Moving on to the battle of the eastern suburbs, Richmond hosted Canterbury down at the infamous Kevin Bartlett reserve in what was a great opportunity for the Snakes to get their season off to a great start against the class of the competition, the Cobras.

It was an even affair to begin before the Cobras lit the match and watched the bomb go off in the second quarter, dancing away from a 1-point deficit to lead by 42 into the half. From there, they drilled another four majors in the third before parking the bus and running out 47-point winners.

Canterbury’s side is brimming with talent, with Trent Lowden launching four through the big sticks, and the ultimate football X-Factor, Mitch Szabo, showing his aerial and quick step skills all afternoon.

The final game of the round was between Hawthorn, taking on Division 4 champs La Trobe.

ROUND

It’s hard coming into a new division, and there was no bigger wake-up call than what Mark Murray and his Hawthorn side dealt to La Trobe. In it until quarter time, the Hawks penetrated inside 50 and didn’t take their foot off the gas until the final siren, amassing 18.16 on the scoreboard to nearly crack the ton and win by 93 points.

Hawthorn finished stronger with a final term of 9 goals, Kenny (6 goals) and Raiti (4 goals), they were prolific in front of goals and proved to be a handful for La Trobe’s back line. Credit to Matthew Ogle who did not stop trying all day. He was named the club’s best player, along with Benetti-Baker, Richardson and Miller.

La Trobe will look to bounce back in the grand final rematch against Swinburne will unfurl the 2022 premiership flag.

Billy Bolch Rivals clash as we get a look at Chapter 1: Patience

Round 1 saw somewhat of a rival round in Division 4 as we got a little appetiser of what we could see this season. North Brunswick and Albert Park met in a clash of two teams who were seeking redemption.

Masala took on St Johns across all 4 seasons of Melbourne’s weather and Box Hill North vs Eley Park took part in a game where the winner would send a statement to the competition “We’re back.”.

Round 1 began with North Brunswick taking on Albert Park in what was the first game back in division 4 for the Bulls. The first half was fairly even between both sides. The Bulls held a short lead over the Falcons at quarter time leading 16-8. The Bulls will then build on this lead a little bit more in the second quarter extending their lead to 12 points at the major break.

The second half saw the Bulls really take over the game. North Brunswick was able to add another 2 goals to their tally whilst managing to keep the Falcons goalless in the third, extending the lead once again to 27 points. The Bulls put on a very similar display in the final quarter as they kicked another 2 majors whilst keeping the Falcons scoreless to run out winners by 41 points in what will be positive signs for the Bulls.

Simon Woodward, Adam Tsardakis and Jake Horeood were among the best for the Bulls. The best for the Falcons included Alistair Lupo, Felix Metz and Jack Minton. Jareth Ombiga (North Brunswick) was the leading goal kicker on the day with 3 majors. Other players who managed to hit the scoreboard for the Bulls include Adrian Sipala and Jacob Cornejo. Goal kickers for the Falcons were Brett Tottenham, Grant Klein and Zachary Freeman.

North Brunswick will now host Masala in a battle between two undefeated sides in what should be a great matchup. Albert Park will now look to get their season back on track when they take on Box Hill North.

The second match of the round saw Masala face St John’s in what was an elimination final rematch from the 2022 season. The Tigers got out to a dream start kicking 6 goals to St Johns’ 2 to get out to a 27-point lead. The Tigers then were able to further build on this lead with a 4 goal to 0 second quarter. Masala was able to take control over an inaccurate opposition extending their lead out to 48 points going into the major break.

The third quarter saw Masala once again run the quarter with 7 scoring shots to 2, which allowed the Tigers to build their lead out to 63 points with 20 minutes left to play. Heading into the final quarter, coach Adam Lagerewskij encouraged the Tigers to continue putting the scoreboard pressure on and they did, adding on 5 goals in the final term whilst keeping the JOCs goalless. The Tigers left the game with a mammoth 97-point win, a major confidence boost for Masala.

Jake Dunkley, Luke Pipolo and Jordan Gibbon were amongst the best for the Tigers. The best for the JOCs included Cameron Cato, Jarrod Ely and Brendan Dash. Masalas’ goal-kicking was led by Sean Downes and Brandon Kelly (4 goals each). Luke Decarne (3 goals), Matt Decarne and Conor Galvin (2 goals each) were also major contributors. Michael Horton kicked 2 goals for the JOCS whilst the team’s other goal kicker was Matthew De Poilly.

Masala will now make the trip to North Brunswick to take on the Bulls in what will be a real test for the Tigers. St Johns will look to get their first win of the year on the board when they face Eley Park in enemy territory.

The round concluded with Box Hill North taking on Eley Park. The Demons were able to get off to one of their best starts and swing momentum in their favour immediately with a 4-goal first quarter whilst keeping the Sharks scoreless. The second quarter saw the Sharks able to slow the brakes on the Demons only allowing one goal whilst also managing to kick one goal of their own. This enabled the Sharks to hold the Demons to a 28-point lead with a half of football to play.

The Demons were then able to fully take control of the game with a dominant third quarter kicking 6 goals whilst keeping the Sharks goalless helping the Demons extend their lead to 64 points. The Sharks were however able to pause the run of Box Hill North in the final term only allowing 1 goal whilst kicking 1 of their own. This quarter however was not enough to stop a dominant Demons outfit who ran out winners by 69 points.

Jonathan Tommasoni was the divisions leading goal kicker of the round with 5 majors. David Edwards was the other multiple-goal kicker for the Demons with 2 snags. Goal kickers for the Sharks were Riley McCann and Zachary Ellis who kicked a goal each. The best players for the Demons were Kristian Smythe, Rowan Lawrence and Samuel Roberts. MILESTONES

Will Hellier (MHSOB FC)

50

Congratulations to Will Hellier, who brings up 50 games for MHSOBFC this weekend. Will joined the Unicorns in 2018, playing in a grand final in the development squad. After making his senior debut, and a preliminary final, in 2019, Will took his game to another level when footy returned in 2021. Playing a versatile role across both the ruck and forward line, Will’s athleticism and reading of the game led to him winning the senior Best and Fairest of that year. After spending 2022 travelling the world, we’re proud to have Will back at the Unicorns this season and look forward to having both his on and off-field leadership at the club for many years to come.

Cameron Lee (North Brunswick AFC)

Well done Cameron on reaching this milestone which has been a long time coming.

Maxine Wells (Old Scotch)

Congratulations to Maxine Wells on reaching 50 games for Old Scotch Football Club. Maxine joined the club in 2018, playing in the Grand Final team, in the Stars foundation year. Maxine has played in the Women’s (Stars) 1st XVIII through her time at the club and is co-captain in 2023. Maxine was an integral part of the Stars Premier B section 2022 premiership team and wish her all the best on reaching this milestone.

Cameron played in The Bulls 2018 premiership but due to covid and injuries has taken a while to reach 50 games. He is so well regarded at The Bull Pit and is the current senior captain. 50

James Hicks (Old Scotch)

Congratulations to James Hicks on reaching 50 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. James joined the club in 2016, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s. He moved into the senior ranks in 2019, playing in the inaugural under 23s team and now a regular member of the 3rd XVIII. We wish James all the best on reaching this milestone.

Sheridan Harris (Of VAFA Media fame) and Bridget Monaghan

100

Ricky Nolan (La Trobe University)

Congratulations to La Trobe’s Senior Men’s coach Ricky Nolan on reaching 100 games – Ricky first joined the ‘Trobers’ in 2014 playing in the Under 19’s. He made his senior debut in Round 1 the following season, playing both seniors and reserves for the next 5 seasons. This long-awaited milestone was delayed in 2020 and again in 2021 and early 2022 due to ACL injury as Ricky stepped into the senior coaching role. Ricky is the classic La Trobe player - starting as a country lad in his uni years. Fair to say that while his on-field contributions have always been solid, his early off-field contributions were also solid, but mostly social! Over time he’s matured into a quiet, calm communicator and the leader of our men, applying reason and logic to his decision making. These skills saw him lead the club to a senior premiership in 2022 in his first year as coach. Well done Brick on joining a select group of 71 ‘Trobers’ who have played 100 games in the red & black!!

Over the weekend, history was made at Wattle Park as not one, but two players became the first to play 50 games for their Women’s side. Bridget Monaghan and Sheridan Harris (both inaugural players of the side) ran out together through a joint banner to celebrate the occasion, with Bridget’s beloved pal Frankie joining them as well. They won’t be the only two for long either, with Sheridan’s twin sister Shannon Harris reaching the 50 game milestone this weekend when the Animals travel to Power House. They weren’t the only 50 game players this weekend at Bennettswood either, with both Joe Anker and Baxter Newbegin reaching the mark during the Men’s Thirds and Reserves games respectively. 100

Nick Stockdale (Old Scotch)

Congratulations to Nick Stockdale on reaching 100 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Nick joined the club in 2016, spending three years in the Men’s under 19s. He moved into the senior ranks in 2019, playing in the inaugural under 23s team and now a regular member of the 3rd XVIII, which he is co-captain of this year. We wish Nick all the best on reaching this milestone.

Joel came to the Blacks in 2014 after finishing school at Carey in 2013. He debuted in the Under 19s in Round 1 and immediately had an impact. By the end of 2014 he was a lock in the Senior side that eventually went on to win the A Grade Flag vs Collegians, the Clubs first A Grade flag since 1974. Joel continued to play, and battled through several devastating hamstring injuries to eventually get a chance to make it on Richmond’s VFL list in 2018/19. After being delisted, (and a few more injuries to boot), Joel returned to the Blacks and has remained with the Club ever since. A great servant who has the respect of every player he has ever played with, past or present, “Jets” brings up his 100 game milestone this weekend against the Blues in what is a fantastic Blacks story. Congrats Jets, go well!

James ‘Shanga’ Lagreca (Ivanhoe AFC)

150

Ivanhoe AFC congratulates triple premiership player James ‘Shanga’ Lagreca on his 150 th game for the club in Round 1, 2023. Shanga was co-captain of Ivanhoe’s Under 19s when they won the North division flag in 2014. A clever, gutsy small forward whose trademark tackling, and pressure is gold, Shanga earned a coaches award in the seniors for his blue-collar work ethic in 2018. He won premiership medallions in Ivanhoe’s Div 2 reserves flag in 2015 and last year’s drought-breaking Div 2 senior’s flag. Keep it going Shanga!

Nick Lewis (AJAX)

150

AJAX Captain Nick Lewis last week reached 150 games against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. Captain now since 2017, a club record, Nick has been an inspiration to all with his work ethic both on and off the field. The tackling machine continues to put his body on the line weekly. Over the journey Nick has represented his state in 2015 against Vic Country and again in 2018 against WAAFL. Nick has been awarded the Coach’s award and been in the VAFA Team of the Year. A scrupulously fair player Nick also won the AJAX Best & Fairest in 2018 and has always been one the most consistent vote recipients with the VAFA.

Premier Women’s kicks-off as Coburg falls short in debut

Round One of the 2023 William Buck Premier Women’s kicked off over the weekend, providing some entertaining games and the introduction of Coburg into the women’s competition.

St Kevin’s kicked off their premiership defence and quest for a three-peat in style on Friday night, with a 35-point win over Caulfield Grammarians. However, had their kicking been more accurate, they probably would’ve piled on an even bigger lead.

The game was close at half time, with Caulfield kicking 2.1-13 to St Kevin’s 2.9-21. However, St Kevin’s turned the jets on in the second half, keeping Caulfield scoreless in the third quarter and only allowing them to kick two goals for the rest of the game.

Bree Doyle started off her season as captain to be one of St Kevins’ best, following on from an impressive season last year, whilst Catherine Stanton and Sarah Betts both kicked two goals.

For Caulfield, Cheree Peters was best on and Tarryn Hurst kicked two goals.

Caulfield will come up against Kew next weekend in what should be an entertaining battle between two of 2022’s best sides, whilst St Kevin’s will take on Melbourne University and unveil their premiership flag at home.

It was a dominant showing for Collegians as they played their first William Buck Premier game, having moved up from Premier B last year. The Purple Army kept Old Xavs scoreless after half time, limiting them to only two goals for the game, whilst they piled on six unanswered goals.

Maggie Gaffney and Ruby Vandenboom kicked a goal each for Xavs, whilst Keirah Dowd was best on.

Xavs will come up against Coburg next week, whilst Collegians will do battle against Scotch in what should be an interesting game.

Kew showed everyone on Saturday why they were the most dominant team outside of St Kevin’s last season, keeping Fitzroy goalless. Whilst Fitzroy showed hope in their pre-season hit out against Hawthorn, they were unfortunately no match for Kew, having moved up to William Buck premier division this season.

The Bears had their kicking boots on, kicking ten goals for the game, including six in the first half. Fitzroy never really looked able to threaten that lead and struggled in their first premier division game. However, it was a tough challenge first up so credit must be given to the team.

Fitzroy best players were Lynas, Bennett and Mooney. Fitzroy now sit at the bottom of the ladder, but will be hoping for a good contest against the eighth placed West Brunswick next week. Kew will play Caulfield in what should be one of the games of the round.

The closest game of the round so far, yet Old Scotch were dominant for the entire game. West Brunswick’s first goal didn’t come until the final quarter, allowing them to bring the final margin to 27 points. The margin could’ve been a lot bigger, had Scotch been kicking accurately, recording 12 behinds for the game, including eight in the first half.

Amy Arundel was a clear best on ground, kicking three of Scotch’s four goals. It’s a strong start for the Cardinals, who moved up to the Premier Division this season after claiming the Premier B premiership last season.

West Brunswick will come up against Fitzroy next week in their first home game of the season in what should be an evenly matched contest, whilst Scotch will play Collegians at Harry Trott Oval.

It was the Lions debut in the women’s competition, and they sure put up a strong fight, with inaccuracy ultimately costing them the game.

The contest was evenly matched at every change, the biggest margin being seven points at quarter time with the Lions taking the lead. However, they never held that lead again, with a 2.3 turnaround from Melbourne Uni meaning they took a one goal lead into half time.

Overall, the game was very evenly matched with both sides kicking two goals after half time. However, Coburg’s seven behinds compared to Melbourne Uni’s four meant they were unable to put a winning score on the board.

Mia D’Agostino kicked two goals for Coburg, whilst Dacia Abela was best on ground for Coburg and Eloise O’Connor for Melbourne Uni.

Coburg will come up against Xavs next week in what proves an opportunity for a strong game, whilst Melbourne Uni has a tough outing against St Kevin’s away.

Monash Blues are victorious after round one of Premier B Women’s

A weekend of slippery ovals and muddy football boots set the scene for the commencement of Premier B Women’s. It’s a new-look competition following the women’s restructure resulting in no Premier C this year.

The Monash Blues kicked off the season strong at their home ground with convincing confidence, claiming a win against Aquinas Old Collegians.

The Blues had success from the get-go scoring two goals in the first term and one in each of the other periods. They were well-defended from the first quarter holding dominance throughout the entirety of the game. Aquinas tried their best to withhold the Blues, scoring two behinds early in the game but struggled to continue and leave their mark.

Contributing to the victory for the Blues was Molly McFarlane who displayed great skill, kicking two goals, making her the leading goalkicker. Ainslee Elliotts’ undeniable power and determination was recognised by many, making her best on field. Can they continue their triumph in round two against the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers who are coming off a week with no game?

Unfortunately, Aquinas missed the mark on this occasion but with players such as best-on-ground Dianna Haines success may be on the horizon. Will a week off instil them with the confidence needed against Richmond Central in round three?

The Old Yarra Cobras rose to the occasion possessing strength at the home ground of the Brunswick Football Club. On the contrary, not for the lack of trying, the attempts of the Brunswick Renegades were unsuccessful only accomplishing one goal compared to the Cobras six goals and six behinds.

It was an extraordinary start to the season for Iliana Zarfiriou who executed four goals making her a goal kicking machine for the Cobras. Exhibiting strength not just as a team but an individual player was Georgia Hatton who was judged as best on field.

Although the tireless efforts of the Brunswick ladies resulted in a loss, Jessica Briggs managed to score her first goal of the season, with hopes of many more. Her accomplishment culminated in her acquiring player of the match for Brunswick.

Can the Cobras construct a winning streak against Richmond Central? Does every cloud have its silver lining, for Brunswick who will compete against the Hawthorn Amateur Football Club? These questions will be determined in round two.

The ladies of North Brunswick sadly had the same misfortunes at their home ground, against opposing Hawthorn Amateur Football Club who celebrated their adventure to glory.

North Brunswick cannot be discounted for their efforts, kicking 13 behinds with great persistence and determination, whilst defending to the best of their abilities resulting in a 13-point margin. The efforts of the best on ground, Dever Adams, was an immense contribution alongside Monique Goates and Fiona Spitzkowsky just to name a few. North Brunswick will now hit the road to the roots of Mazenod for round 2.

It was the Hawks who reigned supreme making senior coach Simon Brownhill proud, with goal kicking superstars such as Kayla May Smith, victoriously scoring three goals and operating smoothly alongside best on field Emogen Johnson.

Will the Hawks kick it up a notch at their home ground against Brunswick’s other representative team? North Brunswick will now hit the road to the roots of Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club for round 2.

Kicking off the season with a tight match, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats was Mazenod Old Collegians and Richmond Central, with a result of only a two point margin but on this occasion Richmond Central were victorious.

ROUND 1 RESULTS 2023 PREMIER B WOMEN’S

GOALS: Hawthorn: Kayla May Smith 3

North Brunswick: BEST: Hawthorn: Emogen Johnson, Emily Roos, Kayla May Smith, Alexandra Crough, Stephanie Nicholls, Charrlotte Miller

North Brunswick: Denver Adams, Monique Goates, Fiona Spitzkowsky, Mary Ntalianis, Caitlin Holzheimer, Ruby-Rose Haywood

Within the first term, Mazenod were in the lead with one behind, creating the only action within the first quarter. This was until fortunately for Richmond Central one goal executed by leading goal scorer Stephanie Talarico, as well as four behinds kicked by the players at the beginning of the second period. An incredible best-on-field performance was displayed by Tenille Moselen assisting the ladies from Richmond to get over the line.

In great efforts to catch up, Mazenod persisted and although everything had been done by goal kicker Kiara Lo Surdo and best player Charlotte Skinner to make the team succeed, it was evident their one goal and two behinds was not going to be enough to obtain supremacy.

With Mazenod playing on their home ground in their upcoming game it is great hope and anticipation that they can pull their team over the line with their first win for the season. Richmond Central are set to travel to the habitat of the Old Yarra Cobras with their heads held high.

It is the Monash Blues who are feeling quite the opposite of Blue, situated at the top of the ladder but not far in the distance is the hiss of the Old Yarra Cobras. In early days, with an amazing effort it is Iliana Zarfiriou from the Cobras leading with four goals, closely followed by Kayla May Smith from hawthorn with three goals. The lineup from the Monash Blues is looking secure with Molly Mcfarlene sitting on two goals and Brook Thompson and Caitlin Williams on one goal each, attaining third, fourth and fifth place.

Can anyone catch Old Xaverians?

VAFA football was warmly welcomed back on the weekend. A fantastic showing for the season ahead was on display in what was a bleak and wintery Melbourne afternoon. The Holmesglen U19 Premier Men’s section was a standout. Most matches were decided by a small margin, demonstrating the competitiveness of the top-flight division. Some teams fell short whilst others prospered.

Old Scotch def. Old Brighton by 8 points

In what was perhaps the game of the round, Scotch prevailed by 8 points at home. They were able remain in front for the duration despite Brighton’s best efforts. This match asserted both teams should challenge for finals and are certainly ones to watch. Robenstone slotted four for the day, assisted by Ferguson with two. W. Townsend, R. Beckworth, L. Harker, H. Byrne-Jones & O. Purcell were all terrific for Old Scotch.

The Tonners return home this weekend to take on an inform Caulfield Grammarians, while Old Scotch will face off against University Blues in what will be a big day.

St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers def. Williamstown CYMS by

19 points

It was a strong showing by both sides at Brindisi St. Though SBMT were able to close out Williamstown with a strong four quarter performance. The Tigers had an abundance of fresh faces who have progressed through the junior ranks. Both clubs had an impressive 2022 campaigns and will look to build upon that going forward. Jack Behnk slotted seven majors for the home team whilst Zach Provest was named best on ground for Williamstown to go with his three goals. McMaster, Harding, Russo, Turner & Ryder were all very strong for the winning side.

The CY’s will play host to St Kevin’s at Fearon Reserve in Round 2, whilst the Tigers are off to Stradbroke Park in Kew to face the Old Xaverians.

De La Salle def. University Blues by 18 points

De La Salle remained in control at East Malvern against Uni Blues on Saturday. De La led for the duration of the

affair due in part to Uni’s inaccuracy in front of goal. The Blues made a late charge in the 3rd quarter but were unable to convert their opportunities. They’ve set the bar high for this season and will look to bounce back next week. The Filipovic boys ran rampant for De La, while Brett Boscacci kicked three majors. While George McCullogh was the best performer for the Blues.

Uni Blues kickstart a massive day for the next Saturday, hosting Old Scotch before the reserves and seniors face off against arch-rivals University Blacks. De Le Salle are heading out to the Snakepit to face off against St Bernard’s.

Caulfield Grammarians def. St. Bernards by 92 points

The Fields completely and utterly dominated St. Bernards at home on Saturday morning. St. Bernards were only able to secure three majors during the contest, L. Said being named their best. Caulfield finished middle of the table in 2022 and are looking to take the next step this season. They slotted 18 goals for the game, five of those by Max Olynyk and four from Jack Atkinson

Pinder, Dwyer, Freedman & McInerney were named the best afield by the winning side. They’ll face Old Brighton next week in the early timeslot at Brighton Beach Oval keen on continuing their winning ways.

The Snowdogs will be on Oval 2 while the Seniors partake in their annual Anzac weekend clash on the main ground.

St. Kevins def by Old Xaverians by 26 points

St. Kevins unfortunately fell short in the first game of their 2023 campaign at home. The reigning premiers are expected to challenge for their second flag in two seasons, making a good first step on Saturday. Though St. Kevins looked strong and are also tipped to go deep into September this season. Duncan was named best on ground with three majors, supported by Will Exell who also kicked three goals for the day.
