Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world.

De La Salle reversed last year's Grand Final result with a 51 point win over Ormond in last week's first semi-final .

In what was expected to be an even contest De La ran right over Ormond in the second half, kicking 11 goals to 2 .

De La lost both Mick Deveson and Chris Campbell through injury on the morning of the match and Ormond recalled young forward Andrew Hill who had been out with a broken collarbone .

And it was Hill who proved a handful for Brain Waldron early in the first quarter to give Ormond an It was just that De La used the early 15 point lead . Not that Ormond had most of the play - they didn't .Karin and Peter Rennie. ball very indiscriminantly up forward with long ill-directed kicks to Phil The De's contained Ormond in the second quarter and just before half time Phil Kerin broke away from Mark McDonald for the first time . The margin at half time was just a point in favour of De La .

That was a sign of things to come .

De La Salle moved Karin to full forward, Tony Klarica to centre half forward and Peter Rennie to the pocket . Theirgame wastransformed . MickGreenewas marking stronglyaround the ground and the De La small running players took control .

Rover Mark Lowe was superb in the third term, as was winger David Harrington especially overhead .

Their extra bite on the ball combined with the brilliant running of defender Pat Maher and Peter Ryan gave DLS many more opportunities to score . Greg McHenry made some scintillating forays deep into Ormond's defence and split it wide open . With Peter Rennie firing DLS added 6 goals in the third quarter .

Ormond weren't even able to rally in the last term despite the great efforts of centreman Phil Meh rten . He had a great dual with Tim Cooke . Brian Hanrahan helped to keep Ormond to 1 goal in the last term whilst De La Salle added another 5 goals .

It was a very disappointing display by last year's premiers . It was an interesting contrast in tactics .

Ormond switching the play onto the grandstand attacking flanks . De La Salle, by contrast, using the defensive flank on most occasions, a tactic for which they're renowned .

I think that Ormond weren't al lowed to play well, that's the best De La Salle have played for some time and they'll be difficult to get over in the Preliminary Final againsttheir opponents either North CA d Boys or Collegians .

I'd be very surprised if De La Salle don't face North Old Boys because I expect Collegians to Fdvance to the Grand Final today .

Why do I think Collegians will win? Well, for a start they're a much more settled combination .

Let's startwith their defence . They're a really mean lot, and tough . Imagine trying to geta kick against Simon Williams, Stua rt Hinchen and Rick Schober. They can also run the ball well from defence, especially with Andrew Wright, Gary Irvine and Greg Parsons .

Collegians centre line is classy - Greg Tregear, Peter Kahn and Andrew In gleton but perhaps could be pressured if North were to line up with a centre line of Bruno Conti, Mauro Borcich and Peter Weir .

It's the Lion attack which is really dangerous . Ian Robert s has kicked a lot of goals at full forward , two are flanked by the brilliant Stephen Rickford has had a grand year at centre half forward and theseBaum, Peter Wolff, David Hoyle but enigmatic Ian Herman . Will he produce his best in the finals? Tony and Richard Herman are all capable of kicking goals .

In the following division is Chris Pollock, possibly supported by Grant Newman and complemented by two great rovers - Jeff Lemon and Keith Parsons .

What about North? Well I've made mention of their centre line, whatever its make up - it shouln well . Conti, Borcich and Weir sounds pretty good to me!

North's defence will try to make it hard for the Lions . I'd be surprised if Jerome Griffin and Paul Considine do not spend a considerable part of their time in the key defensive positions . They're both fine players . But whether Mark Malone and Steve Hibbert and company can hold the Lions' other forwards is a moot point .

Should North getfirst use of the ball they have some forward to trouble Collegians . Luke Morse, Tony Egan, Tony Cahill and Dave Edwards shouldn't be allowed too much latitude . North's on-ball players Brian Hanlon and Gerard Brown have had fine seasons and should provide some opportunities .

Ruckman forward Peter Wright is back in touch and could kick goals . I wonder if Frank Muto will play? I saw him play a dynamic game early in the season . His strength and high marking would be invaluable for North .

On balance though I can't go past COLLEGIANS . Remember North beat Collegians in Round 2 but so did Blues in Rounds 1 and 3!

Peter French Previews 'I'ÂŽd~y's Semi-finals in A and B Sections and the Preliminary Final in C. Section

B SECTION REVIEW AND PREVIE W What a superb match it was between 1st semi-finalists Parkside and Fawkner in B Section at Elsternwick Park last Sunday . The result was a draw : Parkside 15 .18 .108, Fawkner 17 .6 .108 .

The match is to be replayed on Saturday at Toorak Park, Prahran .

It was an absolutely enthralling game and when the siren sounded after 31 minutes to signal the draw the crowd broke into spontaneous applause - a tribute to the entertainment they had received .

Fawkner started well, kicking the first 3 goals but thei r lead was narrowed to 6 points at quarter time .

But Parkside took control in that second quarter - they kicked 6 goals whilst Fawkner could not manage one and Parkside looked good with a 31 point lead .

Then came the turnaround halfwaythrough the third quarter . Fawkner unleashed an incredible burst - 6 goals in almost as many minutes and Fawkner were back in it - just 10 points down at the last break .

The last quarter was a thriller . With 2 quick goals Fawkner hit the front at the 5 minute mark . Then it was goal forgaol . Parkside hitback everytime Fawkner gotahead and drew level atthe 25 minute mark .

Terry Young put Fawknerahead at the 27 minute mark butOllie Filipovic replied for Parkside to level the scores at the 29 minute mark - the siren sounded 2 minutes later with the scores level .

It was a marvellous game of football .

In the B Section 2nd semi, it is hard to tip against OLD PARADIANS . I don't believe Nick Wilton will play for the Old Xaverians but they might include schoolboy Luke O'Sullivan, a very talented ruckrover . Let's hope it is as good as the Fawkner-Parkside match !

I'll have the usual A Section Review at 6 .40 on 774 3LO on Saturday and with luck possibly something on B Section on Sunday at 6 .20 !

Ooh, I've almost forgotten to pick a winner for the replay of the B Section 1st semi-final . I think Fawkner is on a high and at siren time will be in front this week .

Before having an in depth look at today's big games just a few comments on last week . Firstly congratulations to Old Trinity, Monash Blues, Bulleen United and Old Essendon on their respective promotion to B, C, D and E Section for 1987 .

Bulleen United requires just one more win to collect not only the 1986 flag but also the coveted title of Champions, a title it would singly hold following State Bank's Rese rv es shock one point loss to Brunswick . Other teams to reach Grand Finals were Old Carey in G Section and Ormond, Collegians and Old Paradians of the Under 19 teams .

Defending premiers Ormond bowed out of the finals race with a very ordinary performance against De La Salle . No doubt it was a sweet victory to the Blue and Gold following last year's Grand Final loss .

In a game of low standard and poor skills, especially in the first half, Ormond could find nothing and with the retirement and loss of players it must look to its promising Under 19 team to bolster the ranks for nextyear . De La on the other hand was able to stay in touch forthe first half and afterthe long interval its centre line and "mosquito fleet" headed by Wally Gaspirine, Paddy Maher and Greg McHenry slipped into top gear . De La Ran all over and right away from the Monds . One final point I'm sure the move of Phil Kerin to full forward and Peter Rennie into "more space" helped just a bit J .P . !

The B Section 1st semi was a real thriller . The drawn game was pure entertainment from go to wo .

Prominent personalities of both clubs in Parkside's Tom Johnston and Fawkner's Phil Turner, who appeared to pull out his remaining hair, were besides themselves . Parkside coach John Wise was rightly disappointed with the draw . His team had the game sewn up midway through the third quarter and in the end can be considered lucky to have managed a replay . Fawkner's Kevin Morrison was tremendously proud of his sides fight back and rightly so . He agreed that Parkside had looked winners and was very relieved with the draw . The replay at Toorak Park promises to be another great contest between the two clubs . Finally a note of congratulations to the players of both sides who provided the contest . Well done and thanks for a great afternoon's football .

Now to the weekend's games .

Collegians will rightly start favourites against North and should advance to theirfirstA Section Grand Final since 1961 . They have every right (15 successive victories) to feel confident and despite a second round loss to their opponent appear to my mind to have a better balanced and more skillful team . North on the other hand are more than quietly confident and give themselves a real chance and in short are really looking forward to the encounter . Rival coaches Bruce Ferguson, Collegians and Mark Hannaber ry , No rth are not being carried away bythe war of words ordare I say it the Peter French or Ross Booth Previews! They have both been around, in football terms, for a long time, and have healthy respect for individual stars and overall teams of their respective clubs .

I believe Collegians will win the game because of its hard hitting and attacking defence which I doubt North can penetrate enough to kick a winning score . The Collegians half back line, I predict, will read Irvine, Schober and Hinchen leaving Greg Parsons to line up beside Williams and Wright in the last line . There are one or two there who will put up with no nonsense and enough running and skill in the remainder to ensure plenty of opportunities are created for the forwards .

How will North position its forwards? Much may depend on the fitness of Frank Muto whose marking strength allied with that of Peter Wright's would provide a real focal point . I certainly wouldn't underrate Cahill or Brown's ability to kick goals and Hannaberry could well surprise by playing either of his key defenders, Jerome Griffin or Paul Considine up forward . Throw in the versatile Egan and Mauro Borcich sneaking down from mid field and the Lions defence will be put to the test, one I'm confident they can pass .

Across the centre, a most vital line at the Park and one which De La won hands down last Saturday, I believe honours will be about even . Peter Weir of North should pick up Ingleton and despite an advantage in pace will be surprised by the former Ballarat Grammar man's tenacity and very adept reading of the play . On the other side Tregear will have his hands decidedly full with the beautifully balanced Bruno Conti . Conti's disposal with hand or foot is first class, although he may lack just a yard compared to Tregear who has the happy knack of winding up with one or two goals each week . Conti

therefore may be required to playa somewhat less attacking game than he is accustomed . Both players earnt state jumpers this season and so were well thought of by Messrs . Fisher, Stokes and company . In the centre Peter Kahn will be playing in his first Amateur final compared to his likely opponent, Mauro Borcich's umpteenth . Both players go hard at the ball and are bound to have a hand in many forward moves . I shall reserve judgement on this particular clash until next week as I've not seen Kahn play for some considerable time .

Collegians forward line appears to revolve around Stephen Beckford at centre half and Ian Roberts at the spearhead . I said appears, and certainly Roberts' 80 odd goals suggests he's no slouch whilst Bickford's vast experience, body strength and field marshalling of his flankers and pockets has also had much to do with the club's success . Today they will line up, more than likely, on two players of equal experience, if not more in Griffin's case, more than equal desire and at least equal ability and besides Jerome I an of course referring to the ever reliable and hard working Paul Considine. Conno you certainly have a role to play today . However after these two North fall away in some respects whilst Collegians through Wolff, the Hermans Richard and Ian, Laussen, possibly Baum, Hoyle and resting rovers Lemon and "Nipper" Parsons converge on a loose football on the forward line as the proverbial "bees around a honey pot" .

The roving duals will go Collegians was as Lemon and Parsons have had more consistent seasons than Edwards and Morse who has had more than his fair share of injury . North's Peter Wright will beat Pollock at centre bounces and throw-ins, although the Collegian's big man will worry his opposite number with his mobility and marking around the ground .

To sum up - COLLEGIANS . It's defence is better, its forwards smarter and its on ball players and centre line will at the very least hold their own .

In the replay of the B Section 1st semi-final I'm sticking with Fawkner despite a far more healthy respect for Parkside following its various periods of dominance last Sunday . Fawkner will be strengthened by the definite (this time) return of classy rover Mark Majerczak as well as centre half forward John O'Leary and both sides may also pick up doubtful starters in Mark Park (Parkside) and Brendan Saggers (Fawkner) . I'm also sticking with Fawkner as I don't believe Shane Rodes wil I lower his colours two weeks running and I'm also of the opinion that Terry Young will benefit greatly from the outing . As Tymms and Hills can only improve and Steve Buckley whose second half was magnificent, can return to the pivot it all points to Fawkner . OR DOES IT? Parkside had clear winners in Williams, who was grandly supported by Griffiths. Bradley held the dangerous Price for much of the game and Yoksich was always dangerous especially up forward . I wonder whether Ollie Filipovic's winning goal will ensure him a place in the selected side this week? I would certainly include the 1985 B Section leading goalkicker, but that's a decision for John Wise and company .

Parkside's Shaw, Glasgow and Gord were most impressive and Toorak Park is likely to suit them more than Elsternwick . More often than not replays turn out to be fizzes, but I've no doubt this will be a beauty and Fawkner can just scrape through for they all know they, to quote Kevin Morrison, "got out of it last week" .

In the second semi on Sunday it all points to Old Paradians . Their 4 point defeat of Old Xaverians at Elsternwick Park back on August 2nd was the start of the rot of Old Xaverians who last tasted success against O .M .s on July 26th .

Xavs are bound to gamble on Nick Wilton and possibly Klein and I've a hunch they may resort to their 1981 ploy and play Stephen Curtain at centre half forward and leave Cameron O'Brien at full forward where of course he won All Australian selection earlier this season and also the AAFC medal as best player in the Carnival . Dale McCann is bound to play centre half back no matter what and leave Tony Pritchard at full back. One of Parade's strengths is its half back line where Paul Considine and Peter Wood will provide plenty of dash and support for McCann .

Parade will win around the packs asJohn Atta will give his rovers Frank Gleason and Arthur Roe (Yes he's still going strongly) first use of the ball . They will be far too experienced for the Xavier pair, Josh and Luke O'Sullivan, the latter being the current school captain who it is tipped will play his first senior Amateur game in the final, rather a tall order. I saw the youngster play in a school game against Haileybury and he was most impressive, despite a tendancy to try and do too much . One thing for certain is that he will come off Elsternwick Park on Sunday afternoon with a far greater knowledge of the game than he went on, and all for nothing too, thanks to Messrs. Gleason and Roe! The Parade defence relies heavily on Bill Denton and Paul Curtain and a problem for coah John Turner is whether to play Grummet or Greatham full back . Certainly a back line of Paul Curtain, Grummet and either Atkinson or Wilton looks formidable and with Klein, Peter Cu rt ain and Denton the Old Xavs will ensure Parade works Hard . Parade's goals come through Corcoran, its resting rovers and on ball players where Dominic Spillane sets such a fine example .

Old Paradians coach Gerard Sholly is rightly wary of his former team mates and charges . Promotion to A Section is the great prize for the winner and having regard for the talent in Old Xav line-up the selection of Old Paradians as winners is made none the less with conviction as their form compared to Xavs is far more consistent AND there enough players in green and purple who can vividly remember successive Prelim final defeats in 1983 and 84 and they believe it's high time O .P .'s returned to A Section!

Banyule, on the other hand, put in great effort in coming from;,behind to beatA .J .A .X. and will face the game with greatconfidence . I've gotthe feeling thatThomastown has run its race and that Banyule will realize a dream and win promotion to B Section in upsetting the 'Town out at Northcote, a ground well know to Banyule's Martin Legge .

100 UP FOR DAVID HOYLE Everyone at Collegians extends their congratulations to David Hoyle who played his 100th game for the Club several weeks ago . David joined Collegians as yet another member of that victorious 1979 Wesley College Premiership team . . Moving straight into the Senior side David has played in a variety of positions proving extremely valuable expecially around goals .

His courage and determination have many times been inspirational to his fellow players .

Career highlights include best Senior 1st Year player and memories of Bob Zent kicking drop kicks from full back . A more infamous incident was David turning up for the Senior game when in fact he had been selected in the reserves who had already played one half of football. Nevertheless David has played all bar two of his games in the seniors and in that time has shown himself to be a dedicated footballer and a willing helper around the Club . Well done David , we look forward to your next 100!

GRAND FINA L ANTHONY FELLOWS 150 Congratulations from all at Thomastown are extended to Anthony Fellows for playing his 15oth game in the 2nd Semi Final .

Since Thomastown has been in the V.A .F.A ., Anthony has been one of the best players'and clubman you could wish to have in your team . He is superbly fit and dedicated to the task each Saturday .

He has been a regular member in the V.A .F.A ., C,D,E,F team for the past three seasons and has played very well each time.

He is highly respected by all concerned in Amateur football being a credit to the game .

All supporters love to watch him in action each week with his excellent position play, bodywork, handpassing and team play.

We thank you Anthony for the many fine game that you have played for Thomastown and really appreciate your efforts in taking the field carrying many injuries .

Good luck Anthony in your future games for our Club !

Norm Nugent Reviews and Previews D, E, F, G and U19 Matches

REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED AUGUST 30 D SECTION : Congratulations to Monash Blues who by reversing the two home and away results, easily accounted for Balaclava and thus won the right to return to C Section in 1987 . Preston maintained their 1986 superiority over Old Mentonians for the second time in as many weeks . The Mentonians found form elusive over the last few weeks and can now hope that success will come their way in 1987 .

E SECTION : Bulleen United confirmed their clear superiority in E Section with a ninety nine point victory over the hapless State Bank . The Bulleen players have thus won promotion to D Section . In the first semi final Elsternwick recorded a fifty nine point victory over Peninsula who retire-from 1986 contention . It is to be hoped that the old amateur club ( Elsternwick) is now on the way to resurgence as a power within the V .A .F .A .

F SECTION : As expected Old Essendon Grammarians proved too strong for University High School .

Old Boys in the second semi final . Thus in their comeback season in the V .A .F .A., Old Essendon has been able to achieve a club first, namely win promotion . In what must have been one of the greatest form reversals in history Whitefriars turned their last game deficit of thirty four goals into a four goal excess when they defeated Doveton in the first semi final . Doveton thus ended their season with a whimper after having shown such good form in the latter rounds of the home and away season .

G SECTION : The day's lowest scores were recorded in the second semi final when Monash Whites could only score a solitary goal against the stronger Old Carey side . The rejuvenation of the Old Carey side must be to the advantage of the V .A .F .A . The first semi final saw yet another amazing form reversal .

In the last home and away game G .T .V . 9 had beaten Parkside by seventeen goals whereas in the big occasion of a final Parkside was able to win by five goals .

JUNIOR 1 : Ormond proved its superiority with a comfortable victory over Melbourne Hish School is the second semi fina . This game saw both sides score freely which is an indication of a high class contest . In the first semi final between De La Salle and Bulleen Templestowe, the day's only drawn game resulted . Both sides had equal scoring opportunities and their rematch should again prove interesting .

JUNIOR 2 : Collegians proved their right to be considered the section's top side when they disposed of Old Haileybury byfifty eight points . This margin was a remarkable one considering Collegians had only twelve points to spare in their August 2 game at Albert Park. In yet another most unexpected result Old Melburnians defeated St . Bernard's by fifty three points in the first semi final . In the home and away games St . Bernard's had proven by far the better performed side and further Old Melburnians had forfeited their last game due to lack of players . Who would wantto be a tipsterwith reverses like this?

JUNIOR 3 : Old Paradians won the second semi final by the narrowest possible margin despite C .B .C .

St . Kllda having built an impressive early lead . The Saints were unable to convert several late opportunities which, my match representative believed, could have won them the game . In the first semi final Ivanhoe struck top form when they defeated Hampton Rovers comfortable by fifty points .

REVIEW OF GAMES TO BE PLAYED SEPTEMBER 6 D SECTION : Balaclava and Preston play at Pitcher Park for the right to promotion and to meet Monash Blues next week . Preston's form over the last two weeks has been the better as Balaclava in these two weeks have slipped from their early August form . Did they peak too early? Although last week's game on this ground will be to Balaclava's advantage I select Preston because of their greater final's experience and their current superior form .

E SECTION : Two of the V .A .F .A .'s oldest and former neighbouring clubs State Bank and Elsternwick meet at Monash University . The present Bank side like many of its predecessors is an enigmatic one .

How coaches Bremner and Bull must wish Oval 4 was portable because State Bank sides cor, : ;;tently play markedly better in home games . In addition last week's debacle will still be haunting tl,d Bankers .

Surely Ken Bremner will use it to motivate his players today! What of Elsternwick whose players have displayed consistent form all season? Their big win last week will have built their confidence as well as proving they can play well on big grounds . I know every game is different but as I cannot reconcile my mind with a State Bank renaissance today, I select Elsternwick .

F SECTION : Whitefriars and University High School Old Boys meet at Old Scotch for the right to promotion and to challenge Old Essendon . At their last meeting Whitefriars won in the Donvale mud but no such home ground advantage exists today . I expect University High School to be too talented today for the young Whitefriars side which has no forward focus such as the green and browns have by means of Kufner.

G SECTION : Today's game will see the youth and athleticism of Monash Whites matches against the cunning, strength and experience of Parkside . The Students's pace can be negated by the hard Parkside bump and tackles . Key forwards Farley (Monash) and Bastow have contrasting styles but each is effective providing his linkmen can deliver the ball effictively . Opposing rovers the Salvatore Brothers (Monash) and McMurtry will be keys to the outcome of this game as will be the ruck duels between Ninnis (Monash) and Graham . I expect a high standard game and difficulty selecting the winner. I expect Monash fitness will be the vital factor in earning them a narrow victory .

JUNIOR 1 : How does one analyse the outcome of a replay? Each game is a different proposition and comparisons soon pale . One factor which I believe will be relevant is the fact the Bullants had a bye in Round 18 which could well have caused a hiatus in their match fitness depsite the combined efforts of coach Allan Parris, team Manager Dick Thompson and sonsultant Laurie Aghan . Statistically De La Salle has been the better performed side over the season at both ends of the ground . However today I tip Bulleen-Templestowe .

JUNIOR 2 : Old Haileybury and Old Melburnians meet at Hampton . Statistically Old Haileybury is the stronger side . However what of the inconsistent Old Melburnian players? Was last week a flash in the pan or are they big occasion performers? I select Old Haileybury as the Navy Blues will have great difficulty blanketing 'Blood's forwards especially Cox and Stewa rt .

JUNIOR 3 : I have seen both Ivanhoe and C .B .C. St . Kilda from the boundary this season . Although St .

Kilda has been the better performed side Ivanhoe impressed me more with their fierce desire to win the ball and then to mover it quickly . Ivanhoe will be buoyant after last week's big victory while St. Kilda must be asking what do we have to do to win? Given this data I select Ivanhoe .

RETIREMENT OF RON `BUNGHOLE' BUNGEY END OF AN ERA AT OLD MENTONIAN S All members and supporters of Old Mentonians would sincerely like to congratulate Ron 'Bunghole' Bungey on his contribution to the club over the many seasons .

A founding member of the club in 1968 Ron has finally decided to hand up his boots after the First Semi-Final last Saturday against Preston . During his 18 seasons with the club since joining direct from Mentone Grammar School Ron has not only greatly contributed with his on field performances - 344 GAMES ( a club record), he has also filled in many capacities on the administrative side of the cllub holding down positions as President, Vice-President and Statistician for the club since its inception .

This has culminated with Ron being awarded Life Membership of Old Mentonians and the V.A .FA . 'Certificate of Merit' Award as recognition of his great service to Amateur Football .

Much more could be written about Ron but it could all be summed up with his determination and desire for the team and the club . Now Ron has set the mark for others to follow!

Well done Ron we hope that you will now give the club your service again on the administrative aspect of the club.

AN EARLY 5 0 Today sees Old Haileyburians' Jeff Wood play his 50th game for the club in the juniors' preliminary final, "Woody" joined us two years ago and secured a regular place in that year's reserves team which competed in the finals series . Oddly enough Woody played about 20 games in open-age football before playing in the juniors . This year he has settled in the back pocket and played in his usual dependable fashion - even his kicking's improved! Well done Woody.

150 FOR "JUNIOR"AT BULLEEN UNITE D It took a little longer than expected for diminutive Neil Bowden to chalk up this miilestone due to injury in the middle of the season, though the title "Junior" is apocryphal after 150, Neil still shows the dash that he had in former days, as well as faultless passing and has been an asset in the wide open spaces of Koonung Park . It is a great effort to play for Bulleen so often and in and in the successes of the 1982 Premiership and this year's effort, of which Neil has been no diminutive part .

IMPORTANT MEETIN G The famous boardroom at VFL House was the setting for this most historic photo taken at the conclusion of a meeting between senior office bearers of the V .A.F.A ., V.F.L ., V.FA ., VC .F.L ., V.M .F.L . and Junior Football Council .

The meeting was Chaired and initiated by V.C .F.L . President, Brian Molony who gave credit to the V .A .F.A . for first suggesting the possibilities of getting together to discuss issues of mutual concern .

It is hoped that further informal meeting will be held in the future .

B SECTIO N Old Xaverians and Old Paradians have met on 37 occasions . Old Paradians having 19 wins and Old Xavs 18 .

LADIES DAY OUT A first for Amateur Football happened, on the last home and away round of matches .

3 of our umpires ran together for the first time and they were women . Sharon Alger field umpired, flanked by boundary umpires Theresa Bolger and Leah Gallagher. These three young women umpires all said what an enjoyable day they had and are looking at the finals with great anticipation and enthusiasm . Congratulations girls on your year so far and on behalf of all umpires, we wish you all every success for many years to come.

The Golden Whistle Award which was selected by Neville Nash and Graeme Simpson went to the very promising, Justin Toohey, who I believe has a great future in front of him . DOUBLE 50 AT ELSTERNWICK Congratulations to Albert ( Albi Contin & Be n Hill of Elsternwick on playing their 50t ftames today in the Preliminary Final .

Albie Contin has shown remarkable improvement in his football during the three seasons he has played with Elsternwick . This season Albie has been the mainstay of the rucks and finished a very close third in the 1st Best & Fairest .

Ben Hill is one of the key runners in Elsternwick's game. A fine mark, a good kick and can run all day .

Ben is a great ball-winner but has a short fuse and occasionally gets involved in altercations with the opposition . When he has his mind on the game Ben is a real winner .

Both players are important parts of Elsternwick's drive for D Grade in 1987. Congratulations to Ben Hill & Albie Contin on achieving their 50 games.

Best were Butera, Horen, veteran Shane Maguire (7 goals), Dillon (7 goals), S. Weir and Considine (N .O.B.) ., and for Old Xaverians, Vale, Sullivan, Callil, Pirrie, Noonanan, Stanley ( Old Xaverians) . The question on everyone's lips after the game were whether Old Xaverians could recover and whether veteran Shane Maguire would be able to repeat his magnificent performance in the grand final .

10 YEARS AGO - 1976 It was another North Old Boys - St . Bernard's grand final when St. Bernard's held on long enough to stop De La Salle's bid and get home by 2 points.

St. Bernard's inaccuracy, 11 .24 to De La's 13.10 almost cost them the game . Best were K.Phelan, Nadzielski, Angel St.B.) and Lyons, Groves, Donegan (De La Salle) .

Marcellin won their way into 'A' Section in 1977 and the 'B' Section grand final when they beat Old Scotch by 34 points. Old Melburnians, Old Xaverians, La Trobe Blacks, & West Brunswick won 'C', 'D', 'E' and 'F' premierships .

15 YEARS AGO - 1971 .

Ormond earned the right to meet Uni . Blues when they inflicted a crushing 43 point defeat on St. Bernard . Wood, Ladd (7 goals) and Murphy were best for Ormond, who were in control all day.

North snatched a 6 point win over Ivanhoe after trailing by 19 points in the third quarter. Ivanhoe's inaccuracy, 3 .12 in the second half led to their defeat .

Premiers in other section were ' C' : ToorongaMalvern (who beat Old Trinity by 5 points) ; 'D' : Power House (beating Reservoir O.B. by 15) ; 'E' : St . Pat's (who beat La Trobe Blacks by 1 point) and ' F' : Marcellin (beating Old Ivanhoe by 29 points) .

20 YEARS AGO - 196 6 Coburg trailed Old Paradians by 15 points at threequarter time in the Final and fought back to lead in the last term only to see Parade come back to score a goal and win their way to the 'A' Section grand final against Melbourne High . The Parade winning margin was 5 points.

Ormond were overwhelmed in the second half by Ivanhoe who kicked 7.4 to 1 .2 for a 31 point win and chance to play Kew in the 'B' Section Grand Final , Premiers in other Sections were Geelong (C); Old Geelong (D(and AJAX . (E) . It was a double to Old Geelong as their Seniors and Reserves defeated Old Carey in both Grand Finals.

Umpire Kevin McKay was the man in charge off the 'A' Section Grand Final at South Melbourne C.G . when Old Paradians defeated M .H .S.O .B . to make it 4 premierships in 5 years .

In'B' Section Kew repeated their semi final victory over Ivanhoe to take the premiership .

35 YEARS AGO - 1951 Old Paradians repeated their Final win over Alphington in the Grand Final to take the 'B' Section premiership (decided under the "pre-Page system" when the minor premiers had the right of challenge if beaten in the semi-final or final) .

"MILESTONES ABUNDANT AT NORTH" The following players have reached importan t milestones with the North Old Boys Amateur F.C. in recent times .

Peter Jongebloed reached 200 games recently and this milestone was achieved in his 13th season with the club. Commencing in 1974 in the Under 19's, Peter has been a member of our 1977 and 1983 'A' Reserve Premiership sides also captained the Reserves in 1981 and 82, which was the side Runners-up in both seasons . Peter has represented the Club in a staggering eighteen 'A' Reserves Finals' Matches and also has spent well over 10 years on the Committee, well done Jonger !

Dominic Butera a team mate of Peter Johgebloed's in 1974 and also commencing in that season and winning the 1974 U19 Best and Fairest, Dom reached the 200 game mark against Caulfield Grammarians . Dom has been a member of our two 'A' Grade Premierships in 1976 and 82 . Dominic has also played in a lot of finals matches, 16 in fact, all in 'A' Grade . Dominic has been well known for his lightning dashes along the wing and half-forward line and the way he is playing at the moment could well add to his impressive tally.

Jerome Griffin has recently attained the 150 game total and is presently captain of the Senior Team .

Jerome has been captain since 1984 and incidently won the club's Best and Fairest in that season . Jerome has been a member of the 1977 'A' Reserve Premiership team, the year he started with the club, and the 'A' Grade Premiership side of 1982 . He has also represented the VAFA on a number of occasions with distinction . Well done Jerry !

Marl', >â&#x153;&#x201C; c wman reached the 100 game mark some time ago in a season where he is showing great form, must have been the trip overseas that did it . Mark commenced in 1979 after coming straight from the school side . Since that time he has excelled in the small man brigade enabling the Reserves to play in 3 consecutive Grand Finals in the early eighties . A member of the 1983 'A Reserve Premiership side and also winning the Best and Fairest in that year, Mark has now won himself a more regular place in the Senior team and should play a big part in the September action .

John McIntyre finally reached his 100 games after some frustrating injury setbacks . John has shown good form this season with several Senior appearances and he could play a hand in our aspirations in September. John commenced in 1978 and has been a member of our 1978 Junior Section 1 & 1983 'A' Reserve Premiership teams . John has displayed great ability around the goals and has kicked many a memorable goal in his time also he has displayed great courage in his quest to win the hard balll . Well done John !

Mic k Brow n reached his 100th this season after coming from Coburg Amateurs in 1977 in which year he devastated the opposition to clinch the 1977 'A' Reserve Premiership for the Club. Browny has played many fine games in the seniors and if not for his work commitments he would have featured more prominently in recent times . Browny's desire for the ball has left many an opponent floundering, especially one day at O.M .'s and he still has many fine games left in him .
