RESERVOIR' CRASH AFTER FLYING START Parade, North Old B oys Share Top Place

By GEORGE McTAGGART Reservoir Old Boys clashed against the persistent pressure of Old Paradians last Saturday, when after leading by five goals at quarter-time, they failed to finish on and went down by 15 points .

Parade are now in top position on- the list from North Old Boys on percentage - they are the only unbeaten teams after only two rounds .

There were many close finishes in the rain and mud last week - three games were drawn, two were won by a point and in two others the difference was only two points .

There was plenty of excitement at Reservoir hopped out in the first term and kicked 6 goals to lead Harry Trott Oval where Collegians met Power House - the Reserves Paradians by 5 goals at the first change but Parade hit back in the game was a draw and in the seniors second quarter and had narrowed the Collegians won by a point.

PRESENTATION TO' MR . JACK M&GAI-M M A well-known figure in Amateur football circles and in fact in ALL football circles throughout Australia, Mr. Jack McCann, who was honoured by the Australian Amateur Football Council at the Annual Meeting held in Melbourne during the Carnival last year by being elected the first Life Member of the A .A.F .C. was presented with his Life Membership Medallion at the meeting of the V .A .F .A . held early this month .

The presentation was made by Mr . and has also served as a Vice-PresiJack Fullerton who was President of dent and Chairman of the Executive the A.A .F .C . at the time the award Committee . was conferred on Mr . McCann .

Mr . McCann is a Patron and a Life He was Hon . Secretary of the AusMember of the V .A .F.A ., held the tralian Amateur Football Council for position of Hon . Secretary for many some time and also served a term as years prior to the second World War, President of the Council .

ORMOND VICE-CAPTAIN'S CENTURY All at Ormond congratulate Bruce Bourn e on his 150th game today. Bruce has given Ormond great service no matter where he plays and is capable of rising to any heights in a tough situation . He has also had the honour of being captain of the Victorian State team and making the All Australian team as well which speaks volumes for his ability . A grand clubman, we all say well done Bruce.

UMPIRE'S CORNE R CENTRE SQUARE ' The centre square 45 .720 metres shall be marked in white on the centre of the ground .

Bounda ry umpires will take up a positio n opposite each other on the centre wings where the lines of the "square" meet at th e lgame, the star n and eafter each goa tquare ,hasben scored .

Field umpires must wait until bounda ry umpires are in position before proceeding to bounce the ball .

When a player has infringed by being on or over the line of the "square" the boundary umpire shall sound his whistle and call to the field umpire "against number" and "name the club", the bounda ry umpire will then run in the direction of the kick .

The fi eld umpire shall then award a free kick to a player of the opposing team who is nearest to him in the centre of the ground, such free kick to be taken at the centre circle .

The fi eld umpire is the sole judge as to who takes the free kick .

In the event of both bounda ry umpires sounding their whistles simultaneouslyI f the offenders are from the same team the free kick shall be given to an opponent .

If however, the offenders are from opposin $ teams, the field umpire shall then proceed to - bounce the ball, after allowing players time to take up their positions out of the "square" in accordance with the provisions of the centre square .

In the event of a scrimmage which requires the field umpire to once again bounce the ball (or throw it up) then the centre square law does not apply .

In the event of a breach of the laws being detected by the field umpire, prior to, or during his moving in to bounce the ball he shall award a free kick to the player offended against, but at the spot where the incident occurred, provided such free kick does not penalise the side offended against .

If a bounda ry umpire should observe an incident where a player was forced or pushed over the line, he would not sound his whistle, but warn the offender that it is a reportable offence, also he must inform the field umpire of any action he has taken .

Only four players of either side are permitted inside the squares, if there are more

,than that number and who do not move out when instructed by the field umpire, a free kick shall be given to the opposing team at the centre circle .

If the ball is thrown in the air due to heavy ground conditions - the time when the ball leaves the field umpire's hands is the time when players can move into the "square" area.

The spirit of this law is to enable the game to be free of congestion at the centre bounce, thus allowing for the skills of Australian football to be further exemplified .

If the elbow strikes the head - Report the Player.

Reserves section coach, Sections "C" and < .D> , This year because of the shortage of umpires we accepted men who for various reasons are unable to train under supervision of the coach, and are supposed to train on their own . This is a most unfortunate position and really not satisfactory, but is unavoidable at present .

This applies to the two umpires whose fitness you queried .

NOTE TO ALL CAPTAIN S With the introduction last year of the centre square, the field umpire is no longer allowed to bounce the ball away from the centre circle at the start of the quarter or after a goal has been scored, no matter what the condition of the centre area may be .

THE SOCIAL SID E Last Saturday night about 20 umpires with their wives or girl friends attended the Bar-B-Q at Daryl Hills home . The weather was not the best but thanks to D aryl and Nannette and David Dressing the night was a grand success .

Teetotaler Lance Williams won a bottle of bubbly, whilst a bottle of home-made "Grappa" went to another non-user in Alan Bishop .

It was good to see some of our first year umpires enjoying themselves, teenager Simon Marks escorted a real sweetie called Deborah . He didn't leave her side all night and I don't blame him .

Bill Mason's wife Lois, lovely as always, sold the coach tickets at 10 cents each, reckon he was taken as other sellers wer e offering 5 for 20 cents .

AJAX came to the rescue and fielded a team in the Junior section so that there would not be a bye .

Les Gordon played a great captain's game for Power House to hold out West Brunswick and win by a point - 10 .13 to 9 .18 .

25 Years ago In a game that was tight all day Ormond beat Uni Blacks by 5 points at University - the only team to have beaten the Blacks at home in the past 11 years .

Scores were 7 .9 (51) to 6 .10 (46) . Pat Cash, Max Smyth and Jock Cordner were best for Blacks while Ormond gave most credit to their coach, Lou Bois .

In another 'A' section game, Old Scotch held off a fine finishing effort by Brunswick to win by 4 points . Bob Arnold, Manson, Russell and Mick Eggleston starred for the victors while half-forward flanker, "Tonky" Mellors (6 goals), full back Alan Sporton, and Alan Neale (ruck) were great players for Brunswick .

Teachers' College were outplayed by Collegians but Jack Kennedy was outstanding in ruck for Teachers .

Arrangements were in hand for Interstate match against South Australia at St. Kilda Cricket Ground on King's birthday, June 13 ; the first game in Melbourne between the states since 1937 .

Both matches since the war - in Adelaide in 1947, and at Perth during the Carnival in 1948 were won by South Australia, by 44 points and 13 points respectively .

Old Brighton congratulates Peter Devine and Ross Smith who both play their 50th games with the club today . Since joining the club, "Skinny" has been a great asset to the firsts and an inspiration to his teammates with his pace and great courage . Ross, who has also become a reliable clubman, is regularly in the Reserves best and fairest and could well make his way into the first eighteen . Congratulations and good luck for the season go to both these Brighton stalwarts .
