Whilst I congratulate this weekend's Grand Finalists and the clubs who have already won Grand Finals or have been promoted to a higher section, I would like to reiterate iny message conveyed on Presentation Night .

That is, whilst we applaud success of individuals and clubs, the success of the VAFA is not to be found in individual performance . It lies with 73 clubs, 211 teams, 6000 plus players, 130 or so umpires and the many thousands of volunteers who give some much of their time literally "For The Love Of The Game . " is your President, I have great pride in our Association and I am proud of everyone associated with it .

The contribution you all make is legion and is recognized by myself and my Executive Committee, if not sadly, at the highest level of football-the AFL. te ur "a+ is the heart and soul of _ustralian Rules football .

I is played for all the right reasons. It is not 'ompromised or tainted by conunercialism or 7e power of the dollar and our ideals and traditions, existent for 112 years, reflect the aspirations of the game's founding fathers . cpounding those sentiments hw-:ever, i t iould not be forgotten tl!it f, re wre 1<sues

In stating this he, r, if the problems that beset our game are to be addressed, there must first be some acknowledgement and recognition by the AFL that the problems endemic in junior football, such as lack of umpires actually do exist .

Whatever action the AFL decides to take it must be taken sooner rather than later . Later will be too late .

Once the filial siren has sounded on Sunday, it will be a signal for us to commence preparing for the 2003 season .

Already we are addressing the issue of tunpiring and we will be adopting measures to ensure that umpiring numbers for 2003 are improved and that a career in umpiring is promoted as a an adjunct to one's personal development .

I wish our competing clubs this weekend good luck and I sincerely thank everyone associated with the VAFA for your contribution this year.

ST BERNARDS and OLD XAVE S meet today for the second time in an A Section Grand Final in thre e

seasons .

On that occ asion Xavs were looking to equal the VAFA record of six A-grade grand finals in a row and the Bernies were chasing their first flag in this grade since 1975 .

Today Xavs are trying to create another piece of history by becoming the only club to win seven A Section premierships in eight years and the Bernies their first flag in this grade in 27 years to add to their 1991 and 1984 B Section premierships .

Xavs six-behind loss to the Bernies in the second-semi final was their fourth final loss from 16 starts since their run of six flags in a row started in 1995 .

Last Sunday's 33-point victory over Scotch took that to 17 finals .

OX's dominance has accounted for all teams except last year's premiers Marcellin, in A Section since that time .

Perseverance and a positive attitude has given the Doggies another crack at the title.

After going out of the 1998 and 2001 finals series in straight sets, and losing the 2000 Grand Final to Xavs, a lesser club would have faded.

Not so the men from West Essendon who are a beacon of strength for the VAFA in Melbourne's north .

This year their experienced line up of Nick Mitchell and cousin Chris, Ben Jordan, Ben Hogan, Damien McLaughlin, Anthony Thomas, Luke Turnbull, Ben Loughlin, Luke O'Sullivan, Cameron Trewin, Nick Smith, Joe Mount and Tim Harvey - most of whom have come into the seniors over the past few seasons - have been complimented with the introduction of the best full-forward in the competition Dan Jordan, the maturing of ruckman Liam Wilkinson, wingman Lucas Fielding. half-back David James, forward-pocket rover Sean Neeson, flanker Simon Clarke (the last four played for the state Under-19 team this year), and flanker Brian Ashton .

The average age for the team has been in the low 20s .

Also new to the club is dual-VFL premiership coach Peter Nicholson .

The former Springvale coach introduced a third night of training - rare in A grade - and Nicholson encouraged his young players to get outside their comfort zones .

The technique worked delivering the minor premiership . by two-and-a-half wins, but more importantly a six-behind win over Xavs in the second-

semi .

Xavs were down by 50 points in the last quarter but kicking with the wind in the last quarter came to ivithin five points at the start of time-on .

To remain in control in this environment is testament to the Nicholson philosophy .

The OX team today is looking better than the secondsemi team.

Captain Nick Mitchell, who has been a key to the Bernies push to be a force in A grade, said his club's finals record means nothing as this is a different team and Nicholson said he "wasn't interested in history" and that they had a full squad from which to choose .

Last week Xavs brought back one of its Fab-Four whc have played in all six flags, wing-specialist John Bowen, Bowen, an excellent overhead mark, has been nursuiâ&#x201A;Ź a hamstring during the latter half of the season and ii would seem he is not up to chasing Fielding who wa ; the best in the second-semi .

The other three members of the Fab-Four, Dar Richardson - six brilliant goals, Michael Blood another impressive rucking job, and Andrew Dillon smart across half-back, are all in form in lat September . Will this be their swan song?

Chris Ellis, a key defender, also came back last wee] and he should take Dan Jordan who kicked seven goal in the second-semi and dispensed with Damian Stone. and David Landrigan .

Former Collingwood utility Alex McDonald's dicky leg and back flared up and he was replaced by Janie Scanlon .

Travis Ruyg, one of the best midfielders in th competition in his first season after playing in the VFI ran water last week and said his twisted ankle inct .irre in the last home-and-away game, was "getting bett( each time we kick a goal" .

The key should be Ruyg complimenting Tim Ockleslia, and Simon Wood .

Xavs followed the example of Old Haileybury in the E grade preliminary last Saturday, and went straight 1 Elwood beach to do a recovery session inunediate : after the preliminary final .

Xavs endured 28-degree heat and the game was play( in a strong wind .

clashes with Xavs wimvng in the second round of the year.

For our tip this year we want to wait imtil the weather forecast at the end of the week so you'll have to listen to 96 .5 Inner FM at 9am on Saturday, and for those who don't get this publication on Thursdays, then today (Sunday) at 2pm 88 .3 Southern FM well be part of the live ball-by-ball broadcast team and we'll give it again then.

A dry and still day will suit the younger Bernies, whereas wet and windy conditions will bring the ball to the ground where Xavs' physical strength could be telling.

The 2003 promotion to A Section issue has now been sorted, so lets get on with the real reason why we're here: premierships . Bring it on . . .

The Preliminary Final at Sandringham, was a close game for a half, but then Old Fialieybury suddenly decided that that was enough and away they went, and spanked NOBs to the tune of 56 pts .

In the first qtr, OH kicked with the breeze . NOBs were hoping to contain their opponents to a reasonable scoreline to set up a big second qtr, and even though OH opened up a handy 20 pt lead and the end of the term, it was certainly not insurmountable . Lay (OH) and Collison (NOBs) were playing well for their respective teams .

The second stanza was almost a mirror image of the first however, it was a do-or-die period for NOBs, as they couldn't afford to give OH a big start at the main break . Goals to Mason and Lay just before half time gave OH a 6 pt lead, and took a lot of the wind out of NOB s ' saits.

As mentioned last week, the third qtr is called the premiership quarter, and it was OH who was able to make the most of their turn with the breeze, and raced right away. NOBs had their pants pulled down in a big way, when OH piled on 8 goals to ni1, as Jenke, Bourke and the big man O'Farrell went ape droppings snuffing out any hope that NOBs had of staying in the game. The margin at the last change was 52 pts, and that fat bird was called in - it was all over once she cleared her throat and bellowed .

The last qtr was another big one for OR as they continued to press home the advantage in the general run of play, but couldn't manage to gain the rewards of their labours and boot goals . NOBs were battling hard but their race had been run and were wanting the final siren to ring so they could enjoy a cold beer and start planning for 2003 .

Good players for OH were aplenty' and they were superbly led by Bourke, Brooks and Armstrong to name a few. For NOBs, Collison, Eastaugh and 'The Colonel' (Sanders) tried valiantly all day, but unfortunately couldn't early the day for their team.

Old Paradians gave the punters from the north cast something to cheer about when they got over the line against Old Haileybury by 13 pts, and get another crack at OMs . OP won the toss and kicked against the wind but it proved to be a wise move . A 9 goal second qtr from OP blew the contest to the schizenhausen, with loose checking by OH going a long way to helping the green and purple's cause . rn

OIi fought back t o ake it I pt th e difference at the main change, but with th e breeze at their back s for the last qtr, it wasn't going to be enough to hold off the rampaging OPs . 1va,)Qnan, Moyle and Ladd were good players for OH . Once again, didn't hear from anyone from Bundoora, so I must be on the nose! I

Old o~ -ni rnians (114) vs Old H aileybury (3/1) Well, here it is, after I8 rounds and 3 weeks of fuia}s , we're down to these two .

The residents of the BowIing Green have been the pacesetters of fhe competition from virtually the season's beginning. Erwin Leyden and ]its coaching crew went about recruiting players that could make up the difference they were behind from 2001, and take them one step further. With the 2001 list staying almost intact, in addition to the new recruits, one could say that the objective has been achieved . The 3 aims of an amateur club are finals, promotion and premiership (in that order), and ON-is have got 2 out of 3 so far . A win today would be the third of three objectives and icing on the cake in what has been a successful year .

It's also been a successful journey for Mick Dwyer and his gang. They spent a lot of the year perched in the bottom half of the four, but some big victories against key opponents when it counted elevated them to the double chance, and their win last week indicated that finishing second was no fluke .

Although they were pummeled into submission 2 weeks ago by OMs, OH were able to recover very wel l (much like Adelaide), giving them a large dose of confidence going into today .

It is no surprise as to who the selection will be this week. The bandwagon of OMs that I jumped on since Rd 1 has been able to carry my big carcass and still get to the OF, and there's no reason whv I should jump off today. To the roars of delight from Mick Ihwer and Keith Schilling, the Carroll Kiss of Death goes smack on the lips of OMs . The margin won't be as big as the 2nd Senu, but OMs will get the chockies today and add another flag on the wall, when they prevail by 28 pts .

premiership favourites . There's a big chance for a flag for the Green and Purples, and the Keepers Arms will be pumping today (and tonight and tomorrow) if they can snatch a victory. Today will be their d^r% although it will not be easy .

Whitefriars took the Premiership Cup to Friar Park with a hard fought victory over a gallant St Bedes M entone Tigers at the windswept Elsternwick Park on Saturday. My congratulations to Eddie Power, Norm Elliott, Greg Feutrill, Anthony Carbone and all the Friars team on a terrific season capped off with the Premiership Cup . Cuz was to sleep with it on Saturday Night . To Dale Collins, Marty Ruddick, Russell Barnes and the Tiger players well done on your efforts you gave of your best and your grace in defeat was terrific to see .

I now put my pen to rest after a terrific and enjoyable C-Section season and look forward to returning yet again in 2003 . Thanks to you all for your great support .

REVIEW 'Very blustery conditions greeted the players as they ran onto the field to commence their last game for 2002 . The Tigers started the better and seemed more settled as the Friars appeared to be a fraction nervous . Timmy Beasley in arguably his last game for his club set the wheels in motion from the ruck constantly getting the ball down to Andrew Hayes and the little Mouse who were giving the Friars midfield some worrying moments . Steven Kidd was also proving a handful for the Friars defense who were made to work hard. At the first change the Tigers led 5 .7 to 2 .0 a couple of posters not helping their cause . But in was certainly their best start in a final's game this year.

Nothing during the first term warned us of the avalanche that was to follow . Sure by the end of the first the Friars had settled into the game and kicking with the wind they were certainly not out of it . But 11 goals straight . WOW. It was some of the best final's football anyone could wish to see . Long goals, high marking, slick handball, fast running, great teamwork, and all of a sudden the course of the Grand Final had changed . The Tigers to their credit kept attacking and to kick three of their own goals into that breeze was still a good quarter of football .

The third had to belong to the Tigers if they were to stamp their mark on the game and have any chance .

They attacked incessantly but could not force their way through the strong Whitefriars defence who continued to send the ball forward. Tim Beasley was having a great battle with Rob Pasqualotto as was Matt Power with Hayes . Richie Pawlik was marking everything in sight, his brother Adam continually drove it out of the centre and the Tiges were missing

Mouse who had hurt his ankle, but the left foot of Moose was an a d e q u a t e replacement . And so at the final break of the season it was the Friars who still held sway.

The battle continued ferociously in the last as the Tigers threw everything at the leaders in a last ditch effort to switch the balance of power . At the 20 minute mark it was still only 15 points the difference, the breeze had abated slightly the boys from Mentone were still attacking and anything could have happened. But the Friars steadied the ship as we entered time on and kicked 3 late goals to extend the lead out to some 40 points when the curtain was drawn on 2002 as the siren sounded on C-Section for the last time . It was fitting that the two best sides in the competition over the whole year had put on a great exhibition of football in the Grand Final.

Matt Power was a worthy winner of the Ritterman medal for the BOG, he was followed closely by the Pawlik Brothers, Sweeper Northey, Swain off half back and I thought little Kennedy was a real goer all day. For the Tigers no one tried as hard as Tim Beasley a top performance, Andrew Hayes was good all day, Paul Wintle held firm down back, Matt McCraw was terrific in the midfield and Steven Kidd was always dangerous up forward .

Congratulations to all the Umpires appointed to the game especially Wayne Hinton and Timmy Sutcliffe who put aside their disappointments and did a terrific job .

Caulfield Grammarians played the conditions better to record a hard fought, but well deserved win over Old Camberwell in the early game .

Matt Bourke steered through a long shot to put O .X . again in the lead, then Stephen Collins held his nerve to put a set shot through to retake the lead . Chief Executive Phil Stevens tipped Old Brighton to take out'B' Section flag and after a bit of dithering picked Collegians to defeat De La for'A' Section flag .

The Grand Final weekend kicked off at 8 .50am on Saturday with the U19 Section 1 Grand Final between Old Xaverians and De La Salle who won the chance for another shot at OX with an 8.6 to7 .5 win against Old Melburnians .

U19 2 Central flag was won by Old Camberwell against Therry, and in U19 2 South Chirnside Park won their first ever Amateur Flag when they defeated AJAX .

In Sectionl Old Xaverians were in control all dav to take out the flag, 6.15 to 4 .6, reversing last year's Grand Final result .

It was a windy day surprisingly for tire 'B' Seetion Grand Final .

It was University Blues who beat top of the ladder Ormond, convincingly at St Kilda Oval . and then met Commonwealth Bank who had defeated them twice during die year in the final .

It was never in doubt, the Blues winning 16.9 tell 1 .9 .

Then under the finals system in operation, Ormond, because they had finished a game clear at die top of the ladder had the right of challenge and met die Blues on a blistering hot day at Warringal Park. It was an eask= ;vin to the Blues .

The only bright spot for Ormond was the first game for 19 year old Laurie Mitten who went on to next year to win the 'A' section best and fairest. (In a recent 2002 article in the 'Sun', Ron Barassi named Laurie Mithen as the best player he played with in die 50's Melbourne premiership teams, and as his second player Don Williams who had been recruited from Elsternivick) .

Having done reasonably well with the H & A tips this season, I'm happy to admit failing to pick a .r7nner in the Seniors' Finals Series! Final's footy IS different!

Mentone Amateurs met at the City Oval Box Hill i n nearly ideal conditions, except for a 3-4 goals fluctuating northerly favouring the Scoreboard end, to which Tony Macgeorge elected to kick . Good decision that, with the Vultures dominating the quarter and ending Qi with a 32 points lead . The Yellow Topped persons & Catering Staff were close to exhaustion by the first break, as the mid twenties temperature increased the fluid intake demands of players and spectators alike . The energy and skills displayed by both sides in the opening term were quite outstanding, and that held true until the final siren . The Sullivan & Barr boys, O'Meara and Rowley were all prominent for Mentone early. Q2 was a reversed reprise of the first with the dominance role switching to the Animals, as their runners used the breeze to flood the scoring zone with usable opportunities . Up fortvard, Vaughan , Ash Brown, & Nick Hodder converted those chances efficiently, and the Animals took the lead late in the term. In addition, the St Leos' defence held their opponents to a solitary point, with Tim McCann, Krebs, Buckle and Donovan all having a big influence on the rebounding rate . The long break saw the Animals convert a 5 goal deficit to a closing 4 points lead, not significant admittedly, but Darren Turner would have been happy with the way his players had wrested the momentum from their

opponents . Q3 was an arm wrestle, with I Mentone temporarily regaining the ascendency, only to se e St Leos, by sheer grinding persistency, increase their lead by a further 8 points to take a 2 goals advantage into the 3rd break. This was a major change from the three previous meetings between these two great sides this season. On those occasions, the Vultures had forced the Animals into a catch up modality, and had been able to answer every challenge . The early minutes of Q4 saw 'Stammer' Johnson converting defence into attack, culminating in Tony Mac drilling a super goal at the 1 0 minute mark to level the scores! A couple of minutes later though, Nick Hodder slotted one through from the Middleborough Rd boundary to regain the lead, and that was followed in quick succession by great goals to St Leos by Paul Ristevski (from a wonderful mark), and Julian Hodder, repeating an apparent Hodder speciality, a magnificent long shot from the outer boundary. A further goal to Brendan Vaughan in the 20th minute band gave his side a 4 goals break, and though the Vultures reduced that to 17 points in the last few minutes, victory was beyond them . Thus the Animals took the flag, in the best Flag deciding game this scribe has seen for many years . The match was a tribute to the level of skills and endurance developed in their respective sides by Coaches, Darren Turner & Tony Macgeorge, in that both teams went flat out from beginning to end, and their discipline never faltered throughout . The game was further enhanced by professional performances from Field Umpires Robert Sneddon & Richard Eastwood .

University B] cks took on AJA"_ with the latter resplendent in catchy little Apple Green numbers (St Kilda training jumpers) due to a declared jumper elash . Unfortunately, the Jackas alternate strip had the effect of rendering them semi-invisible against the grass of the arena, inducing a certain amount of dysfunctionality amongst the Blacks, who had difficulty 'finding a man' during critical parts of the game.

Every time the Blacks thought they had the game in their grasp, the Jackas kept at them, to force extra time in the first place, and then to overtake and ivin in the dying seconds of the 2nd 5 minutes Extra Time period . After last week's Preliminary t ri umph the Jackas could rightly expect to be in with a show against the Ashers today. The latter have to be raging favourites, but so was Blacks last week, and the Jackas just ignored the ratings! I will still go for the Ashers to win by 3-4 goals, but they wi ll not be able to relax at any stage !

The EN D is HEA R ! Whether you are a footballer, official, supporter, or umpire, good management principles suggest that one should review the year .

After reviewing 2002, we should assess our performance (and enjoyment) to determine how we went and what our agenda should be for 2003 . Will we, slip back gracefully, maintain our performance, or set our goals higher?

Others may opt to retire or take a new direction in their sportileisure endeavours. For umpires opting to change, you may choose to transfer from, the Boundary to the Field, Field to the Goals, become an observer, or retire. Footballers looking for a change may choose to retire, become coaches, officials, or take up a new sport. Some footballers and supporters may even contemplate becoming umpires and for these people here are some insights on umpiring . Umpiring is the ultimate sporting challenge . If you specifically want to improve your running ability, become a boundary umpire - running 10 to 15 Kms per game is not unusual at the elite level. If you want to be running fit and develop your supervision and managerial skills - take up field umpiring . If you have the ability to maintain your concentration during periods of inactivity and then respond instantly and correctly to explosive situations become a Goal umpire . As an umpire you have to be mentally alert all day. Umpiring - It's the instant feedback, non-contact team sport . It's a real buzz to call the action correctly and have the game flow smoothly . The biggest achievement must be, to know that you have done what most people won't even attempt, let alone achieve, ie umpire . Umpiring is the supervision & managerial sport ; it's the ultimate sporting challenge. As an umpire - to use a boxing term - you are ringside to the action .

Looks like Andrew Rechtman an d Dom Napoli just can't keep out of trouble . Firstly Dom went to the wrong ground last Saturday as he thought the B Section game was to be played at Elsternwick Park, luckily he ran into a surprised Vinny at the gate. Vin informed him of where the game was being played

Now Doc turned ( ! up to the A Section Reserves jus t to have a look after umpiring a D 2 Grand Final on Saturday, little did he know he would be boundary umpiring five minutes into the first quarter as Damian Lane injured his calf and had to leave the field . 'fwo games again in one weekend this is the third time this season .

In week one of the finals Phil, who resides in Beaumaris, was the duty officer at Parkdale and he asked his wife Robyn and 14-year-old daughter Joanne if they would like to come?

Jack remembers John Dillon, a VAFA patron, and VAFA Treasure Noel Rundle playing in the 1950s .

From 1961 to 1965 he coached Ormond U19s .

They won a premiership in his last year. Jack has been on the VAFA Tribunal for 25 years and has been a duty officer . His family assist Jack at the EP gates because they love footy and the friendly competition of the association . Jack said he wouldn't want to be anvv :here else even on those cold miserable days through winter than on the knoll at EP.

David went on to roles as president and delegate for the Monds before beginning a new chapter w-ith the VAFA. He was the first VAFA President to have come from a district club.

David follows Geelong, and some say that's all he and Phil Stevens talk about at meetings, with his best AFL player being Gary Ablett and his favourite VAFA players are Bruce Bourne and Jock Nelson .

Yarra Valley continued its astonishing 2002 for m when it trounced Salesian by a massive 139 point s at Central Reserve to win the club's third premiership. The day was made more memorable with the Bushrangers seconds also winning the reserves premiership .

Bushrangers coach, Tim Killworth capped off a stellar season maneuvering his players and delivering timely tactics to perfection . His chargers were fierce at the ball, ran hard in numbers and turned on all the skill and team work that was their trademark throughout the year.

Ash Drew was outstanding with his pace and skill seemingly unstoppable. He won the A R Fellows medal for best on ground and after finishing second in the league best and fairest the week before, was the toast of many celebrations .

Phil Valoppi cut out Salesian's prime mover Ivan Bobetic, who appeared to get injured in the second quarter and had little impact on the game . Chri s Beal was another key player through the middle and kicked four goals in tricky conditions, and in the nick the effort by Paul Cremean against Salesian captain, Andy Campbell was also important .

In the first quarter Yarra Valley kicked with the aid of a strong breeze. They finished with six for the term and set up a reasonable lead. But it was the performance in the second quarter that won the match ; the Bushrangers bagged seven goals into the wind to Salesian's two . From here on it was a question of how far. Salesian players seemed to stop and lose belief, and after being beaten twice by the Bushrangers in the past four weeks who could. blame them .

Bushrangers President, Steve Le Get says the team saved their best performance for last .

"The result is fantastic for the club . The boys realised you don't get to many opportunities to win premierships, so they really seized the moment," says Steve .

"The second quarter effort to score so heavily into the wind was the turning point . From half time onwards it was a case of open the gates because here comes flood .

Yarra Valley booted an amazing 12 goals in the third quarter -a club record for the most in a quarter .

Their forwards were dominant, midfielders ran hard and backmen snuffed any Salesian attempt to go forward .

James Keem kicked four crucial goals in the first

half before leaving the field with a knock to the head. Ben Crowe an under 19s graduate took som e telling marks, Sam Savage provided play of the day kicking a huge goal from outside 50 meters in the third quarter. He took on three opponents in the centre, beat them and ran to just outside the arc to belt home an inspirational goal to the delight of Bushrangers players and supporters .

It was Yarra Valley sixth senior grand final and they secured the flag by playing with the same style and dominance they have showed all season . And with a young talented list, the average age between 20 and 24 years, the future looks promising for the club.

Salesian can still be proud of their efforts this season . They were beaten by the D2 benchmark, a team hardly troubled all year. They had terrific service from ruckman Andrew Campbell who battled tirelessly all day, as well as support from Thain and Knott . In the end the rigors of a three match finals campaign seemed to have an effect on the players as they succumbed to the might and power of Yarra Valley.

Reserves:

In a close match Yarra Valley hung on to win by three points against Peninsula in tricky, windy conditions.

The Bushrangers got off to a flyer kicking eight goals with the wind, but from then on the Pirates worked themselves back into the game. They kicked 10 of the next 14 goals and controlled the play in the last quarter with the ball in their forward half for most of the term . In the end they ran out of time and Yarra Valley held on to a hard fought victory.

Better players for the Bushrangers were Hale with four goals, Davies two and getting plenty of touches, and Gillies also contributed. For Salesian's they were well served by Barber, Gardner and Stainforth .

The premiership is Yarra Valley's first from four attempts at reserve level.

U . a 3t a r on ogsPas-w t° itionally in sport evidenced by the recent demise of Nell Balme at Melbourne FC, coaches bear the brunt of re s,~onsibility for a team's poor performance. In some cases the sacking of a coach may be justified, but in others the team may as well have been not performing to the best of its ability . In lbourne's situation the pundits generally agreed that Balme :i an excellent coach. Joseph Gutnick also acknowledged that. Then why was he sacked? Simply because the team had lilt rock bottom and the administrators had to be seen to be doing something to remedy the situation . The thinking is that a new broom can't do any worse . My research on AFL coaching would not support such a decision . A change of coach on average, produces improved ladder positions in the following _ :ason on only 50% of occasions ie : you're just as likely to go back as go forward - a poor result when you consider that most changes are made when teams occupy a lowly position .

Such results are not surprising because a change of coach may only be a band aid solution for a club not willing, or perhaps capable of addressing more significant issues . Without being close to the Melbourne scene it is difficult to assess, but media reports would indicate that Balme had support from most of the players . In the week of media attention very few specific criticisms of Balme's coaching emerged, apart from a perceived laid back approached prohibiting his ability to "fire up the players" . When you consider the whole range of his skills involved in coaching, such criticism would be meagre at best .

The bottom line was that the team was not successful, so let's get another coach became the catch c ry .

So what is a better solution? I start with the premise that a coach builds up a relationship with players over time and that such knowledge should not be tmderstated . He learns how to t - z t motivate and communicate with his players . Sack him and the new coach has to start again - in most cases that is a disadvantage . What I advocate is that coaches and indeed all staff, be subjected to critical review on a range of established criteria . Once developed then die coach identifies areas to improve his performance . In this sense desirable coaching behaviours are shaped by the coach managers. Preferably these managers should be well educated about the role of the coach .

This process was undoubtedly followed at Geelong in Malcolm Blight's reign, and as a result he left a better coach . The club recognised his assets and worked cooperatively with Malcolm over the (6) years to shape him into an even more skilled coach .

Perhaps Adelaide is now reaping the benefits of Geelong's endeavours .

So before your club thinks about sacking your coach consider the possibility of engaging an independent consultant to review the coaching process with a view to establishing areas for the VA THF AMATFI IR FC)C)TRAI I FR ?0(l2

continued development of the coach . Independent thinking is preferable, since such a person is not hamstrung by traditional values or personalities . At the very least, start to compile a list of criterion for evaluating your coach and conduct a detailed assessment before you decide to give him the bullet .

It is beyond the scope of this article to outline the areas of evaluation, but you might consider such things as organisation and conduct of training sessions, know, ledge of tactics . ability to analyse the skills and to give meaningful feedback to players, preparation strategies for players and team, coaching role during the games, ability to liase with support staff - the list could go on but hopefully you get the idea . In short coaching performance should be measured more comprehensively than on the scoreboard .

Shaping coach behaviour may be preferable to the constant turnover of coaches, because a never ending return to square one may inhibit optimal progress of your club, by negating many of the positive contributions of a coach . So perhaps the easy way may not be the best .

GRAND FINAL RIU M Warm conditions greeted the combatants down at Cheltenham Reserve as West Brunswick and Hawthorn squared of.

The Hawks kicked with the aid of the breeze in the first quarter but failed to capitalise on some early opportunities . West Brunswick concentrated on shutting Hawk Dan Lauletta down whilst relying ,upon Sam Pietch to drive the ball fonvard of the half back flank . At quarter time, the Westies held a solid three goal lead.

The Westies kicked the first goal of the second quarter and the game looked almost already over.

West, Hamilton and Cannane were being well serviced by Gartlan in the ruck . The Hawks dug deep though and managed to get within a few goals at the major break.

It was now or never for the Hawthorn boys as they endeavoured to surge during the third quarter. They got within 2 points half way through but from then on the Westies machine rolled into action. A tight defence, a hard working midfield were complemented by an athletic fon.vard line . The Westies three goals up at the last break . • Hawthorn desperately needed the first goal but it wasn't to be as the Westies went on a rampage, slamming on a number of goals and putting the game beyond doubt .

A fantastic win for the Magpies as they look forward to the challenges D2 brings as do the Hawks, buoyed by an average age of 22 years and whilst a disappointing finish, some satisfaction of a great year of footy.

Seas® nis Summary - Team by Team West Brunswick capped off a remarkable final' campaign with a fantastic win in the Grand Final .

Adam Cannane in particular was the standout both during the season, winning the D3 Section Best and Fairest, as well as Best on Ground in the Grand Final . Other players of note included Richard and Steven Benjamin, Rob West, Sam Pietch and Peter Hamilton . They will hope to be more competitive in D2 in the upcoming season .

Hawthorn , of course, would be disappointed at losing the Grand Final, but at least achieved .promotion. Peter Tyson has been one of the better coaches in the VAFA lower grades for some time now, and I'm sure the Hawks will be a credible opponent next season, especially if they still have the likes of Cargill, Steele, the Avery brothers and

Lautetta around.

Even mor e disappointed would be St . John's dC. They certainly justified their lofty reputation by finishing minor premiers, but crashed out of the finals in straight sets. Usual suspects Steven Koppens, Peter Walker and Scott Hilton once again had great seasons, while Chris Horbury was always a danger in the forward pocket .

I still think they will be a force to reckon with in 2003, as long as they can keep this calibre of player .

Elsternwick, under the coaching of Peter Olivieri, defied many people's expectations by clinching a final's berth in the last round of the season after an entertaining race with Swinburne . Leigh Murphy's mid-season return was instrumental in their resurgence, while the likes of Jack Neill, Craig Mahony and Gary Elvin were also important to the cause, as were Anton Burney's 70-odd goals for the season .

Swinburne were unlucky to miss out on the finals after being most people's tip as relegation fodder .

They were probably the most exciting team to watch, especially with their key fonvard combination of Jason Murchie and Matt Higgins, not to mention Simon Fragiacomo at centre half back and midfielder/on-baller Ben Prior. Definitely a team to watch.

may have been disappointed after their all conquering reign on D4 in 2001 . Nonetheless, the contributions of John Rutter, Chris Cachia and Matt Moresi would have been pleasing, as would the opening of the new social rooms in the middle of this season .

South Melbourne Districts had an indifferent season, and with a few weeks to go it seemed obvious that they had little hope of making the finals, nor were they any realistic chance of being relegated . I really don't know as much of this team as I'd like, but I 'was impressed by ex-Sandringham Dragon Richard Cheevers.

Monash Gryphons were probably the biggest underachievers this season. As their percentage indicates, they were very competitive in most games, but simply weren't able to chalk up the wins when it counted . They still had plenty of talent at their disposal such as Adrian Flowerday, Lee Wells and Tony Gross, yet their D3 status was not preserved until Round 18 .

Power House's second consecutive relegation was finally confirmed on the last day of the season with a home defeat against Monash, and a poor start was their biggest hindrance . They showed signs of a revival in the second half of the year, and almost pulled off an escape of Houdiniesque proportions.

Senior and Boland were their most consistent this season.

Richmond Central's never really got off the ground, with their only match points being awarded due to a technicality . Nonetheless, they were still up for it week in, week out and still had some talent on the park, most significantly quintuple best and faires t

After a long and arduous season, it had come down to th e two pre-season favorites, in Rupertswood and Werribee to battle it outfor premiership glory . The clubs administration can relax somewhat, in the thought that their respective teams will be in D3 next season, however, for the players, they play for only one reason, and that is a premiership .

Well done to all the players on making it to the final hurdle and good luck on bringing home the "Holy Grail".

REVIEW Seniors - Preliminary Fina l Rupertswood vs Albert Park On a day when the wind was blowing like the proverbial, Rupertswood won the vital toss to kick with it . This allowed them to settle sooner than the Falcons, however, some fine work by Shaun Venables for Albert Park enabled his team to remain in touch for the first twenty minutes . In true Rupertswood style, and with Treblecock, Webb and Spinner, all coming to the fore, a ten minute burst late in the quarter saw them pile on four quick goals before the siren to see the Sunbury lads up by five goals at quarter time .

In the second quarter, it was the Falcons turn to kick with the breeze and with Julian Storey, Andre DiMingo, Wes Roe and Vinny Surace all doing well, Albert Park were able to make some headway into Rupo's lead . Albert Park's Shaun Venables was strong in the air and was being well supported by Dave Overend and Joey Robilotta, however, the margin was still four goals at the main break .

Rupertswood then looked to bury the Falcons with the breeze in the third quarter, and with Flinn and McDonald playing well, Rupo were able to bombard the goals . With the Albert Park defence under siege, some strong and tenacious defence caused most shots to be rushed and the two goals from ten scoring shots gave Albert Park some hope in the final quarter.

The last quarter was the thing that final's football are made of. Albert Park desperately fought their way back into the game as they totally dominated play . With accurate kicking and a tight defence, the Falcons got within 11 points at the 20 minutes mark . In the remaining minutes of the match, the Rupertswood team showed some of the character that may have evaded them in the previous season, and weathered the storm to concede only one point and ultimately book a ticket to the grand final, and shake that D4 finals monkey off their back with a ten point victory .

Reserves - Preliminary Final North Brunswick vs Albert Park Albert Park took on the strong North Brunswick team keen to make amends for last week's poor form and kicking with the wind in the first quarter were able to shoot away to an early lead . With Jodie

Taylor dominating the ruck, the Falcon forwards in Pastras, Parmansche and Norman were able t o assert their authority to go into the first quarter break five goals in front. North were able to regain some composure in the second quarter through some good work by Wayne Dunson, however, the team failed to make any headway into the Falcon's lead . In the third quarter . North fought back hard and after kicking two goals into the breeze looked as though they could be a chance in the final quarter. This was not to be however, and as Adrian Harper stood up to be counted for the Falcons, his team was able to regain their authority on the match to run out eventual 26 point winners .

PREVIEW Seniors - Grand Fina l Werribee Amateurs vs Rupert swood After two years of showing great potential, Rupertswood have finally been able to deliver on this potential to their supporters and achieve a berth in today's Grand Final, while Werribee, after some fantastic pre-season recruitment, have taken the next step in their club's progression to lead all season and deservedly have the chance to ruin Rupo's celebrations. The teams have met three times this season, however, it was Werribee that won two weeks ago to gain the mental advantage .

Werribee, fresh from their week's rest, will go into this match as the clear favorite, and with the quality of Lovell and Keogh likely to play big parts in the Tiger's game plan it is going to take a huge effort to knock them off their mantle . With that said, Rupertswood have proven they have the players to do just that, and having shaken the finals monkey off their back last week are poised for great things. With the return of Malty West from injury and combining with the sheer class of Baines and Burrows it could be Rupo's day . However, I think that Werribee has the legs to stave off the Rupertswood running game and with Tedesco on fire, the Bees will take out the D4 premiership with a well-deserved 11-point lrictory .

Reserves - Grand Fina l Werribee vs Albe rt Park Albert Park has performed admirably to get a chance to have another crack at Werribee after their semi final loss two weeks ago . The two teams have been fairly even in their meetings during the season . however, the Falcons will be hoping for good games from the likes of Steve Fairfield, Justin Norman and Jason Rowe in order to ensure they do not get off to a slow start as they did in the Semi . Werribee on the other hand, will

have no doubt benefited from the week's rest and will be hoping to set the tone for a big Werribee double . Collier and Velisha in defence will provide headaches for the Falcon forwards and with a wealth of talent around the ball, Werribee should set the tone for the day with a memorable 22-point victory .

A number of questions were now being asked of both sides, namely could Ajax get their free running goal kicking game going? Or would Oakleigh's man on man, physical confrontational style of play intimidate Ajax to such an extent that a boil over was in the offing? The third quarter saw a very even affair with Ajax holding the ascendancy by 23 points at the last change . The fourth quarter was the same as the first three . Oakleigh continually ran the ball forward but they had no real system up forward to kick the necessary goals required to win . Whereas the Jackers had only to give the likes of Chester, Peters and Thurin some room and goals were kicked. Ajax home by 23 points .

St. Bernards (2) proved all punters right when they ran out convincing winners against Aquinas last Saturday. The Bernies have been the yardstick all season and in a super display of football in the conditions kept the Bloods goalless in the second and third quarters, while adding i l goals themselves . Mitchel up forward -with 6 was outstanding as was Lyon medallist Levides and Hurley. For the Bloods, whose three week campaign began to tell on them in the warm conditions, Sorace, McMullen and Parker never gave in, while Kogelman again tried in vain to lift his side . But all said and done the Bloods had a wonderful season and playing off in the GF would have no doubt been a wonderfiil thrill to Terry McEvoy and all the players and support staff. Let's hope the core group of players can stick tight and put pressure on the senior players in the next couple of years and assist in their rise up the grades .
