THE VICTORIAN FOOTBALL RESEARCH COLLECTIVE in November 1999 a group of writers, researchers, librarians and academics from six Victorian universities met to establish a group ca lled the Football Research Collective. The intention of the Collective was, and is, to bring together football researchers in Victoria on a regular basis with the aim of providing a critical commentary on current projects and to assist with research into football history. The next meeting of the FRC wi ll be held at 7.30 pm on Wednesday July 26 at the offic es of the VAFA and the evening will consist of a round table forum devoted to issues concerning the preservation and promotion of the history of a,mateur clubs specifically in Melbourne and Victoria. Existing members of the Collective are invited to come along and share their insights on history related research projects with anyone from the VAFA fraternity who is interested in attending who has an interest in football history and preservation of current history or how to best begin delving into the past . T he VFRC would also like to show the VAFA fraternity how to publish the history of a club ; how and why the setting up of a"Hall of Fame" can benefit a club; how to organise and preserve interviews with "old timers" around the clubs ; how to set up a web site devoted to club history ; how to collect and 'nok after memorabilia, how to preserve records when a club iulds or merges with another ; resources or funding available o assist with projects of this type along with the role of local government, local historical societies or schools in addressing these issues. People interested in attending are asked to call Karen at the VAFA on 9531 8333 - this will assist with catering . For more details contact the convenor of the Collective, Rnb Hess (9688 4062 or on email : Robert .Hess@vu .edu.au) GET YOUR BLOOD PUMPING The VAFA Blood Bank Competition is again in full swing this season. Club donors are counted with the winning VAFA club receiving prizes and recognition at the end of the season . 1,11th blood supplies very low at the moment now is a great time to donate. Each club has appointed a "Captain Blood" to co-ordinate each club's efforts - if you are a club player, eificiat or supporter, ring your club secretary and he/she will put you in touch with your club's Captain Blood . Highest ta lly after round 7 was UHSOB. The winning club after Round 18 wins a set of club football jumpers (courtesy Hugh Lyon Knitwear) with other prizes provided by

Spalding (footballs), Great Southern Pies (product voucher), and Schweppes (product voucher) . SMOREFREE INCENTIVE COMPETITION S Just a reminder for dubs regarding the July 31 deadline for a formal SmokeFree policy to be submitted to the VAFA for consideration for the various SmokeFree Incentive prizes . Any queries to be made to Brett Connell at the VAFA.

MATCH DAY INSPECTIONS Each match day, nominated officials take note of situations noticed that obviously need attention . The following have been observed . Is it your club? If so, please take action . Under age water carriers; dub boundary umpires poorly attired; area behind goals not marked; no canteen; no stretcher on hand; no approval for alcohol with a club luncheon obtained from VAFA; approved luncheons continuing past 2pm deadline; basic number of required officials lacking ; no permission obtained for luncheon ; no second line outside boundary line (unfenced oval); dub goalies making suspect "home" decisions; runners in nonVAFA attire; no 45 metre arcs marked ; no V logos on jumpers. Where these observations have been made clubs will soon be revisited to see if corrective action has been undertaken . Each club's immediate attention to matters that concern them would be appreciated and will avoid the need for stronger action and possible penalties . FAREWELL ANDY All involved with the VAFA were saddened to hear of the passing of popular umpire Andy Carrick last Sunday (please refer to Umpires' Corner). Andy progressed to the VAFA Umpires from the club reserve umpire system (St . Bernards). Sincere condolences to Andy's family and friends from all at the VAFA.
