Page 1

Halter Breaking Checklist Halterbreaking isn’t just a skill—it’s the cornerstone of a successful cattle operation. This checklist offers a step-by-step guide to transforming even the most unruly calves into calm, cooperative animals, ready for daily handling or the show ring. Let’s get started on building trust, confidence, and control. Choose the Right Time: Begin training calves between 3-6 months old for the best results.

Preparation

Start with Calm Handling: Build trust by spending time in the pen, gently handling and feeding calves to ease them into the process. Gather Equipment: Well-fitting rope halter., Durable 10-15 ft lead rope., Small, enclosed training area (pen or chute).

Week 1: Building Trust Week 2: Establishing Control

Spend time in the pen, allowing calves to get used to your presence. Introduce the halter gradually, letting calves investigate it. Begin short leading exercises, applying gentle pressure and releasing it as the calf steps forward.

Extend leading sessions to 10-15 minutes daily. Practice turning left and right by applying light directional pressure.
