THE V8 BRAHMAN BREEDING FRAMEWORK Every successful breeding decision follows the same three steps, whether you realize it or not.

LOVE THE COW YOU'RE WITH

First, you understand the cow. Then you match the right bull to her strengths and weaknesses. Finally, you use performance data to support the decision.

Every cow has strengths. Every cow has weaknesses. Every mating is a tradeoff.

Work through them in order. Skipping ahead is how breeders end up with the wrong bull for the right reasons.

STEP 1: START WITH THE COW The most common mistake we see first-time registered Brahman breeders make isn't choosing the wrong bull...

It's choosing a bull for the wrong reasons.

Buying semen on: • Bulls with heavily edited photos • Bulls with little real-world proof • Bulls that look impressive but don't suit the cow This usually comes from one problem: not yet knowing how to evaluate cattle well.

Don't take that as a criticism; it's simply a reflection of the learning curve.

The fastest way to improve is not buying more semen.

The fastest way to improve is learning how to match cattle. And that starts with understanding your cow.

There is no perfect cow.

So start with the cow you own.

Even today, at V8 Ranch, we're still making decisions about: What to protect - What does this cow do well? The traits she already has are worth something. Don't chase improvement in one direction and accidentally undo what she has going for her.

What to improve - What does she need help with? Be honest here. Every cow has something, and identifying it clearly is more than half the battle.

What we're willing to accept - Not every weakness can be addressed in one mating. Sometimes you choose to focus on one thing and leave another for the next generation. Knowing which flaws you can live with is what keeps the decision from becoming paralyzed.

Those three questions are the lens through which every mating decision gets made at V8 Ranch. Once you know the answers, the right bull becomes a lot more obvious.

The good news is that most cows fit into one of three types.

When you can identify which one you have, the rest becomes much easier.

Photos and outside eyes help more than anything. Next, we'll show you how to evaluate your cow before choosing a bull for mating.

HOW TO EVALUATE YOUR COW Once you’ve identified your cow type, the next step is taking a closer look at the traits that influence how she will perform as a breeding female. Experienced breeders look at a few key areas to identify where improvement is needed and which strengths must be protected.

For a newer breeder, focusing on four key traits will give you a clear and practical starting point:

1. STRUCTURE

Feet, legs, and skeletal correctness determine how long a cow will stay productive. Structural problems tend to become more pronounced with age, so cows with weak feet, poor leg angles, or structural imbalance are less likely to stay sound and productive over multiple calving seasons.

2. BODY CAPACITY

Depth of rib and body volume influence feed efficiency and maternal performance.

Cows with greater body capacity generally maintain body condition more easily and are better able to support milk production and reproductive performance.

3. MUSCLE & GROWTH

Muscle expression and width influence the performance and market value of calves.

Calves from cows with stronger muscle and natural thickness often show improved growth performance and produce heavier, more desirable feeder or breeding cattle.

4. BRAHMAN BREED CHARACTER

Ear set, hump placement, skin looseness, and head shape signal proper Brahman phenotype and adaptation.

These traits are associated with Bos indicus genetics that contribute to heat tolerance, insect resistance, and adaptability in challenging environments.

Once these strengths and weaknesses are identified, selecting a bull becomes much more straightforward.

NECK: Long and extended.

HUMP: Ample in size, placed directly over the shoulders, even with the front legs. Shaped like a heart cut in two.

HEAD: Masculine head at maturity.

RUMP/PINS: Long and level from hooks to pins with width at the pins.

TOP LINE: Broad and level with a lot of length.

HEART GIRTH: Full and smooth with a level top behind the hump.

™ JAW/MUZZLE: Good and strong with straight, dark black nose. Correct bite.

VOLUME: Deep ribbed with good shape and spring.

Capacious.

DEWLAP: Moderate in depth, not heavy fronted or with large brisket.

It’s a philosophy that goes back to our founder, Howard Parker, who in 1944 selected the 40 fattest calves he could find and bought their mothers. His logic was simple: the cows raising the fattest calves had the strongest maternal power. Build on that foundation, and you build something lasting. Eighty years later, that’s still how we think.

Miss HMC Polled 129/1 (PP) "Lily" is a homozygous polled female with plenty of style, femininity, and depth of body. He consistently adds muscle and shape, particularly in his lower quarter, and has become one of our go-to options when we want to add thickness without sacrificing balance.

The resulting calf, Miss V8 127/0, came together much as we hoped. Miss V8 127/0 retained the femininity, balance, and structural correctness of her dam while showing improvement in muscle shape and body capacity. She carries more width over her top, more thickness through the stifle, and more depth of rib without losing the extension and clean lines that made Lily a useful breeding female.

CHOOSING BULLS

FOR YOUR PROGRAM

Most successful Brahman breeders don’t rely on a single sire year after year.

Instead, they keep several types of bulls available so they can match the right bull to the right cow.

Jim Williams has said it for years: You always need three types of bulls in your tank.

Each one serves a different purpose.

TYPE 1

PROVEN PERFORMERS Proven performers are bulls with a large number of calves on the ground and a consistent record of passing on the traits breeders expect.

These bulls have already been tested through multiple breeding seasons. Their strengths are visible in daughters, sons, and repeatable results across different herds.

These bulls aren't used across the entire herd. They are pulled in intentionally on specific cows when a breeder has a clear objective: introducing a new trait, accessing a rare bloodline, or pushing a program in a direction conventional matings can't reach. Only you can identify what a Game Changer means to your program. At V8, our most prolific Game Changer is JME Suva Crat 225. His genetics introduced strong black pigmentation and an outcross influence that helped lay the foundation for V8’s black Brahman program.

LEVERAGE DATA

ADDING EPDS INTO YOUR BREEDING DECISION Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) estimate how an animal’s offspring are expected to perform for traits such as birthweight, weaning weight, and maternal ability compared with other cattle in the breed.

We believe EPDs can be useful tools. They can also be misleading if you don’t understand how the numbers are generated or what information went into them.

An EPD is only as good as the data behind it.

On many ranches, birthweights aren’t actually measured. A calf is looked at, a number is guessed, and that number gets entered into the system. The same thing can happen at weaning. In some cases, extra pounds get added to make a sire’s performance look better on paper.

Those practices don’t improve cattle. They only improve spreadsheets At V8 Ranch, we take actual birthweights using a tape within 24 hours of birth. We record real weaning weights.

These practices give us information we can trust when making breeding decisions.

WHERE BREEDERS GET IN TROUBLE Sometimes a breeder selects cattle solely on EPDs without understanding phenotype, structure, or balance.

The result is cattle that look impressive on paper but are disappointing in real life.

After all, numbers can't fix poor quality. Genomics can't rescue bad structure. And EPDs don't replace judgment.

This is especially important for new breeders. Without a trained eye, it's easy to chase numbers and end up with cattle that lack presence, balance, and usefulness.

HOW WE SUGGEST USING EPDS We view EPDs as a way to fine-tune a herd, not build one from scratch.

Think of phenotype as the foundation. EPDs work best when they support what you already see in the animal.

WHICH EPDS ARE MOST IMPORTANT? The EPDs that matter most depend on your breeding goals.

Good cattle should look good first. Good numbers should support that quality, not try to explain it away.

For newer breeders, we recommend focusing on these three:

1. CALVING EASE (CED) CED is the predicted difference in percentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred to first-calf heifers. A higher number is desirable.

For a newer breeder with a young cow, calving problems don't just cost money — they cost sleep, livestock, and sometimes both. Birthweight is part of this picture, but it's not the whole story. A long, smooth calf may weigh more than a short, chunky one and still come easier.

Structure and conformation matter as much as the number on the scale. This is where a trained eye adds what the data can't.

LEVERAGE

2. WEANING WEIGHT (WW) The weaning weight EPD reflects pre-weaning growth potential Brahman — in other words, how heavy a bull's calves are expected to be at 205 days, compared to the breed average.

Most V8 calves are sold at weaning due to strong customer interest.

We don't hold them back to generate additional data — they're already performing and moving on. As a result, our growth records are most complete at weaning, and that data reflects real-world performance across the herd.

3. MATERNAL INDEX ($QUEEN) The $Queen index is designed to help you select better replacement females. It improves overall cow value by focusing on the traits that keep a female productive and in the herd — docility, scrotal circumference in her male relatives, and calving ease — without pushing frame size, milk production, or fat in a direction that creates harder-keeping cattle. A higher $Queen value means you're selecting for females that are easier to manage, breed back reliably, and stay useful longer.

Strong cow families are built over time. Around the world, Miss V8 and Mr. V8 cattle appear in pedigrees because those females are productive, stay sound, and remain in the herd for many years while consistently raising quality calves. They breed back on schedule, calve regularly, and raise calves that perform well without requiring extra management.

PRODUCTION RECORDS EPDs estimate how cattle are expected to perform genetically. Production records show what has already happened in the real world.

At V8 Ranch, we rely on three types of production records: Production records - track each cow and every calf she has produced, including birthweights, sires, and sale results.

Breeding records - document which bulls bred which cows and how successful those matings were.

Calving records track information such as calving date, birth weight, and calf vigor.

These records show which cow families stay productive, which sires consistently produce strong calves, and which crosses produce reliable results.

For breeders evaluating bulls, documented results across multiple calves and cows often provide the clearest evidence of what a sire can produce.

SEMEN PRICING DOES PRICE MATTER? Short answer: yes. But not in the way most new breeders think.

The biggest mistake we see is treating semen like a commodity. Shopping for the cheapest straw and expecting the same outcome.

That’s not how genetics work.

A breeding decision is not just a purchase. It’s a long-term investment in the direction of your program.

The right bull can move you forward.

The wrong one can set you back.

And both often cost about the same upfront.

CHEAP VS EXPENSIVE ISN’T THE RIGHT QUESTION Instead of asking, “What’s the cheapest bull I can buy?”

A better question is, “What does this bull actually give me?”

Because what you’re really paying for is: • Proven consistency • Strength of cow family • Predictability across multiple calves • Confidence in the outcome

WHEN TO USE HIGHERPRICED SIRES There are times when spending more makes sense.

Use higher-end sires when: • You’re breeding your best females • You want to make replacement daughters • You’re trying to move your program forward faster • You want predictability and consistency

Match the bull to your cow. Choose a sire that strengthens what your cow already does well and addresses the areas where she needs help. That may mean using a proven performer for reliability, a rising star for fresh genetics, or a game changer when you see an opportunity others might miss.

Then leverage the data. Use EPDs, production records, and semen pricing to make informed mating decisions.
