10 — V8 RANCH HERD REFERENCE

GETTING VALUE FROM THIS GUIDE Like anything worth doing, our annual Herd Reference Guide is a labor of love. For some, these guides may just appear to be a compilation of photos and stats for goodlooking cattle but read closer and you’ll find that it’s actually a detailed family history – for the cows, the bulls, and the people who live and work on V8 Ranch. This year, while still mourning the loss of our great patriarch, Sloan Williams, we decided to include more history, more anecdotes and more V8 lore than ever before. It’s important information for our customers and Brahman enthusiasts, and it’s also important to us. The pedigrees and family trees are impressive in their own right, but we view them with an added dimension because we greeted these cattle in the morning light; walked the ranch with them by day; watched them graze lazily from our front porches in the evening light. For us, each and every identifying number represents a face, a gait, a memory. Their existence meant something to us. And the rich, textured history of each cow family is intertwined with the history – and the memories – of our own family. By recording this history, we honor the generations before us who pioneered the lives we are so blessed to live today.

11 — V8 RANCH HERD REFERENCE

Ask Jim Williams about a particular cow, and he can rattle off her dam, her sire, and her performance stats the way a sports commentator spouts trivia. But, he’ll also recall even the tiniest nuances and details particular to each animal: “She had little ears and held them close to her head”, he might say. Or, “She had a small mark on the right side of her tailhead.” He remembers the exact location where each calf is born as well as what the weather was like on that day. It’s more than just business; it’s meaningful, purposefilled, and personal. This book was written for you. We hope you’ll find value in the explanations, history, and breeding connections we outline herein. But this guide was also written for us. Each year, as we compile the guide, we learn a new anecdote or realize a connection between two animals that has never been highlighted before. As you peruse this guide, we encourage you to take notes, ask questions, and dream big. It’s our goal to help you achieve your Brahman goals, to help you build a herd that means as much to you as ours does to us. Please seek out any one of us for more details on specific animals, or with any questions about our philosophy and our practices on the ranch.

A BRAND THAT MEANS SOMETHING

Behind those two simple characters — a letter and a number — there's a centuryold history of pure bloodlines, skilled expertise, and uncompromising standards. V8 is shorthand for a host of sought after traits. It is also the symbol of our singular focus on producing one of the world's most exceptional Brahman herds.

FAMILY MATTERS For four generations, V8 Ranch has remained steadfastly independent and family-owned. That gives us the flexibility to maintain an old-school commitment to our skills, training, and history. We only employ skilled tradespeople who are as passionate about Brahman cattle ranching as we are. Our staff has become a part of our extended family, and they deserve

accolades for making the V8 brand a highly revered name in the Brahman cattle industry. But, V8 Ranch family members are the only individuals authorized to brand a cow or bull with the V8 stamp of excellence. Why? Because the meaning behind the process is so very important.

THE POWER OF THE BRAND The V8 branding iron represents an original bloodline that now roams six continents. It reflects the passionate men and women who have devoted their lives to creating a superior Brahman breeding process and selection program. We stake our reputation on each animal we deem worthy of the V8 brand, a symbol of our guarantee, our commitment, and our promise of integrity.

hen Sloan and Mollie Williams decided to gamble on their love of livestock and buy V8 Ranch in 1971, they knew just what they were doing. And it's quite the story, too.

Sloan and Mollie Williams both come from deeply rooted Texas ranching families. Sloan’s family had been pioneering ranchers in Millican, Texas for more than 100 years. Mollie grew up on the J.D. Hudgins Ranch, and today, we still keep a special place in our hearts for our cousins at J.D. Hudgins.

HOW V8 GOT ITS START Before we can tell you how we got V8 Ranch, we have to tell you how it came to be such a catch. V8 was established long before Sloan and Mollie bought it, back in 1944. It was founded by Howard Parker of Center, Texas. Parker was a Ford automobile dealer and named his cattle ranch ‘V8’, after the engine. Over time, his herd became well-known throughout the country for its outstanding cow families with gentle dispositions. It’s no surprise that today, more than 75 years later, the guiding force behind V8 breeding is still its legendary cow families.

THE V8 STORY

BECOMING V8: A CALL FROM DESTINY In 1971, word got out that Parker was looking to sell the V8 herd, brand, and ranch in Center, Texas. It was just one week before Christmas when Sloan heard the news. Even back then, V8 was known as one of the better Brahman ranches in the United States. The cattle were good cattle, and Sloan knew it. Not only was the ranch on the market; Parker wanted the deal to go through before the New Year! Problem was — Sloan was out of town, in New Mexico, on his first (and only) Williams family ski trip. These were the days before e-mail and cell phones. Communication was going to be tricky, but this was destiny. And, when destiny’s calling, you call back. Sloan negotiated the million-dollar deal via a pay phone in Red River, New Mexico. He recruited investors to purchase the real estate from the ranch but acquired the registered cattle herd and V8 brand himself. After his vacation, Sloan relocated the herd to Wharton County, where they’ve lived ever since.

BUILDING V8 RANCH: A FAMILY AFFAIR Building a world-famous ranch takes hard work, sleepless nights, and unwavering dedication. Sloan knew that as the owner of V8, he would need to draw on the talents of his wife and family. After all, ranching is a family tradition, and everyone was happy to help out with the effort.

adopted performance record keeping. He began to assemble what has become one of the most detailed and complete cow herd production histories available on any herd in the United States. Sloan Williams had the vision to make the ranch internationally known. He and wife, Mollie, traveled to South America, Central America, Thailand and Australia, building strong relationships with other ranching families that we maintain to this day. Jim and Luann Williams continued that work as international ambassadors for Brahman ranching, traveling worldwide in the 1980’s and 1990s.

THAT V8 STYLE: OUR RAPID RISE Although V8 had a high level of notoriety dating back to its foundation in the 1940s; and we exhibited our first National Champion Female in 1976; and our first National Champion Bull in 1979, it wasn’t until the early ’80s that the ranch really exploded onto the worldwide Brahman scene. Under Jim and Sloan’s expert breeding, V8 Ranch became best known for its outstanding cow families.

In 1976, Jim Williams graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in animal science, and he and his wife Luann returned to the ranch. Jim began work as manager of the purebred Brahman herd, and Luann took over ranch office duties.

What made us famous? Our remarkable ability to consistently breed and market large volumes of cattle specifically produced for fertility, conformation, Brahman breed character, and structural correctness. By focusing our energy on developing these characteristics, we unconsciously developed something else: an unmistakable V8 look, carried by our females, that’s become recognizable the world over. Breeders everywhere claim they can identify a V8-bred animal without even looking at their brand or pedigree. “It’s that V8 style,” they tell us.

Jim has a keen eye for cattle breeding and a passion for Brahman herd improvement—two qualities of a successful cattleman. He quickly began implementing the strict selection and culling guidelines that we still follow to this day. He

We hosted our first ranch production sale in 1981: “The Golden Gate Sale.” It was a runaway success, breaking six world records for Brahman sales. From then, the popularity of V8 Ranch skyrocketed.

15 — V8 RANCH HERD REFERENCE

Always passionate about improving the herd, Jim spent a great deal of time studying the U.S. Sugar Corporation’s cattle, and when the herd dispersed in the mid-1980s, we purchased their top animals. One of the females we incorporated into the V8 herd produced (+)Mr. V8 202/3, an elite Vanguard sire and the winningest U.S. Brahman bull of all time. 202/3 launched our legacy of producing championship cattle, one right after the other. Since then, several bulls have had their own eras of success and influence on our herd, including: • +Mr. V8 287/5 “Superstroke,” born in 1998, a six-time undefeated International Champion Get-Of-Sire Winner (2001-2006). • +Mr. V8 380/6 “The Machine,” born in 2006, the #1 Sire of USA Champions from 2011-2018 as reported by The Brahman Journal. In 2021, 380/6 moved into the number one position of all time in the Register of Renown. • Mr. V8 146/8 “Sloan,” born in 2017, the breed’s only three-time International Champion. We feel that he will lead the next generation of all-time great V8 sires.

SALES AT V8 After our first Golden Gate Production sale, we hosted 1986’s Visions of The Future Sale, and 2000’s Power of Production Sale, which grossed more than $1 million dollars from buyers spanning the globe. In 2015, we embraced the online sales platform and returned to public auctions. Since then, we have consistently broken Brahman records with the highestaveraging bull and cow sales. In 2020, we sold one-half interest in Miss V8 203/9 for the record-setting price of $91,250. Currently, we host two online sales per year (our “Made for Magic” events) where we sell our top-end heifers.

SHOW RING SUCCESS Since 1976, the ranch has exhibited more than 100 National, International Grand or Reserve Grand Champions. We’ve won the prestigious HK Memorial Trophy for Premier Exhibitor of the International Show 12 times. And we feel like we’re just getting started!

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS TOGETHER

Sloan and Jim Williams, 1979

Sloan and Mollie Williams achieved their lifelong dream of ranching together, and now that dream includes their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. At the ranch, on any given day, you’ll find at least three generations of family members working side by side. Having marketed more than 18,000 head of purebred Brahman cattle worldwide, the Williams family takes great pride in being a hands-on, working family ranch. Today, Jan Williams Powell (Sloan and Mollie’s daughter) and her family live and work on the Hungerford Ranch and manage the ranch’s 2000+ commercial cattle. Jan heads up the ranch’s horse division. Jan’s daughter and son-in-law, Payton and Joe Dodge Jessee, are responsible for our sale bulls and supervise the ranch’s hay operations. Jim and his family live and work on the Boling ranch which houses the purebred Brahman cow herd and show barn. Jim and Luann’s daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Luke Neumayr, are the art directors behind all of V8’s marketing materials. And little threeyear-old Knox Neumayr, 8th generation rancher, already has a role caring for and managing the ranch’s keeping heifers (with an assist from his parents, of course!)

A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE At the ranch, the entire family knows not to drive mules on the roads when they’re wet. The tires make unsightly ruts in the roads when they dry – Jim’s biggest pet peeve! He takes great pride in V8’s pristine paths. At shows, every detail is considered – from the booth décor to the design of the brochures. Sloan Williams with his great grandson, Knox Neumayr, and son Jim Williams, 2020. Left, Sloan in Brazil, 1997

"WE BELIEVE IN BRAHMAN CATTLE AND THE PEOPLE WHO RAISE THEM." If we had a coat of arms, our motto would be: Excellence. Whether you’re breeding cattle or setting up a stall party, it takes commitment, care, determination, and extra effort to excel. We believe hard work is worth it. That philosophy is ingrained in each and every generation from the day they can toddle in their first pair of cowboy boots until the day they make the big jump.

SHARING THE SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE At V8 Ranch, we raise Brahman cattle every day of the year. We know them well, and if our cattle fail to function in our pasture, there is no need for them in yours. Dedicated and sincere in producing sound, common-sense cattle, every member of our family is honored and humbled to show our program to potential customers. For us, there’s nothing more gratifying than driving through our pastures and visiting about many things, especially Brahman cattle. In doing so, we have the opportunity to meet and become friends with many of the finest people in the world. John W. Gardner said that excellence is “doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.” Our success lies not only in striving for excellence on our ranch, but in helping our customers achieve excellence in their own operations. As such, we’re always willing to guide and counsel customers when they have questions and concerns. Our pledge to the future will continue to be one of honesty and integrity with you and ourselves with the goal of producing an honest product that proves profitable for all phases of the industry. Why do we do it? Because we believe in Brahman cattle and the people who raise them.

THE V8 BRAND

A PASSION DISCOVERED From 4-H and FFA projects and time spent on the J.D. Hudgins ranch with his grandfather Lanier Hudgins Forgason, Jim took a special interest in breeding, raising, and showing Brahman cattle. Before V8 Ranch, there was "Sloan Williams and Son," started in 1967, specializing in Red Brahmans.

Sloan and Mollie Williams come from Texas families with a passion for the western lifestyle. Soon after they were married, they started their first business together: a rodeo stock contracting business. With this business, they traveled all over the United States putting on rodeos with their children, Jim and Jan.

OUR WESTERN HERITAGE

THE QUINTESSENTIAL COWBOY THE QUEEN OF V8 THE FOUNDATION OF V8 The original V8 cattle herd with Mr. V8 707, grazing in Center, Texas and operated by Howard Parker. These fine cattle laid the foundation for today's modern V8 cattle herd.

Mollie Forgason Williams grew up on the J.D. Hudgins Ranch. Her earliest memories involve helping her own grandmother Ethel Hudgins Forgason care for their herd bulls.

20 — V8 RANCH HERD REFERENCE

Sloan's family had been in the cattle business in Millican, Texas for more than 100 years. After selling the rodeo business in 1971, Sloan continued his family's heritage of cattle ranching with V8. After a lifetime of cattle and land deals, a passport full of stamps, and a beat up truck, Sloan passed away in late 2020. Boy, we sure miss him.

HOME OF CHAMPIONS Since 1976, the ranch has exhibited more than 65 National and International Grand Champions, more than any other ranch in Brahman history. We've won the prestigious HK Memorial Trophy for Premier Exhibitor of the International Show 12 times, including 20152020.

EARLY SUCCESS In 1979, we exhibited our first National Champion Bull, +Mr. V8 347/2.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS OUR RAPID RISE In the early '80's the ranch exploded onto the worldwide Brahman scene. Under Jim and Sloan's expert breeding, V8 became famous for cattle bred for fertility, conformation, breed character, and structural correctness, simultaneously developing an unmistakable look, known as "V8 style."

Sloan and Mollie Williams achieved their lifelong dream of ranching together, and now that dream includes their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Come to the ranch on any given day, and you'll find four generations of family working side by side. The future is brighter than ever — not just for our ranch, but the whole Brahman breed.

COW HERD

POWER OF PRODUCTION

What does a celebrated 19th-century English novelist have in common with 21st-century Texan ranchers? A guiding philosophy. Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name, George Eliot, wrote Silas Marner, a Victorian-era novel that explores themes of societal rank and station, belonging and relationships. In the novel, Eliot quotes a saying from the local farmers – “Breed is stronger than pasture.” It’s akin to our own axiom: “The magic is in the cows.” Like Eliot, we believe good breeding matters more than external assists like money, fame, or the “quality of the pasture”. In the following pages, you’ll see how the foundation females in the V8 cowherd have influenced our current animals hailing from their respective cow families. Just like many Native American, African and Southeast Asian tribes, we trace the kinship of our cattle through the female line. Whether bull or a female, an animal belongs to the cow family of its dam. Often, we will breed animals from prominent cow families with bulls who boast the power from one of our other cow families. The result is what we call a Superblend™.

INTRODUCING OUR SUPERBLENDS By focusing on our legendary foundation females, V8 Ranch has succeeded in establishing consistency and predictability in our cattle. We also, believe it’s important to give credit to the cow family represented by the sire. As you explore the pedigree of our cattle, you’ll notice the blending of multiple cow families across generations of cattle. While the primary designation for our cattle is always determined by their dam's cow family, we have created a Superblend™ label to recognize animals hailing from a blend of two exceptional cow families. For example, +Miss V8 33/8 in the Rose cow family (Rose is her maternal grand dam), also blends with the Claydesta 203807U5 cow family through her sire +Mr. V8 191/7. Look for the Superblend™ icon to identify cattle that represent a mix from more than one cow family.

1978 RESERVE NATIONAL CHAMPION FEMALE

Miss Priss, a stunning Guzerat-type female, was the 1978 Reserve National Champion Female. She sold for the record-shattering price of $25,000 to the Vineyard family in Texas. When the Vineyards decided to get out of the Brahman business in 1982, they called Jim and offered him a deal: he could Rex Emperor De Manso Mr. V8 711 { JDH pick any of their 3X cows for $1,750 Miss V8 541st Sire: +MR. 3X MUCHO GRANDE each. MISS PRISS COW FAMILY

TWENTY NINE YEARS OF FAMILY CHAMPIONS... AND COUNTING In 1990, the V8 team celebrated a historic win in Dallas, Texas, when Judge Dr. Bill Turner slapped Miss V8 8/4 as the Reserve National Champion Female, the first from the Miss Priss cow family. In 2019, we celebrated again when Miss V8 483/8 was named National Champion Female under Judge Dr. Joe Paschal. During those 29 years since the crowning of the first female, we enjoyed six National or International titles from this cow family, with both bulls and females represented. We cherish every title as if it’s the first, appreciating all of the collective knowledge and hard work it takes to achieve such a high honor.

origins In the 1980s, Brangus breeder and Texas oilman Clayton Williams established an elite herd of Brahman cattle. All of his cattle were named with the prefix “Claydesta”, which was created by blending Clayton’s name with his wife’s name, Modesta. The Williams hosted a special event sale at Houston in 1988, and it was there that we purchased +Ms. Claydesta 203807U5 for $5,000. We’d call that a smart investment, considering that we’ve seen over $2 million (and counting...) in cattle sales from this family.

prime picks When they are born, each of Sloan and Mollie Williams’ grandchildren and great-grandchildren receive one heifer to start their Brahman herd. It is presumed that the parents will select the ranch’s top heifer at that time. Six picks have been made, and three of them were from the Claydesta 807U5 cow family.

origins Born and raised on the ranch in Boling, Texas, +Miss V8 805/6 was sired by +JDH Sir Avery Manso 159/7, a Liberty son that Jim purchased from J.D. Hudgins, Inc. Avery was bred to our best V8 cows, creating a tribe of powerful females, including our beloved 805/6. A heavily muscled, deep-sided, and very feminine cow, she is the mother of national and international champions. In fact, her influence has carried worldwide through her son, three-time Houston Champion, Mr. V8 146/8, “Sloan.”

pedigree and lineage

+Miss V8 805/6 boasts a pedigree that is a unique blend of Avery, Liberty, Datapack, and Imperator. Her mother, +Miss V8 827/4, also raised an International Champion Bull, Mr. V8 612/5 (sired by Powerstroke).

family honors and lasting legacy

a bright start She was never named a national or international champion, but +Miss V8 805/6 still enjoyed a phenomenal show career. She was Calf Champion at the 2008 World Brahman Congress in Fort Worth, Texas under judge Billy Wayne Key, and a division winner at many major shows. Judges admired her tremendous length of body, outstanding profile, and big powerful hip. Although she excelled in the show ring, it was her production in the pasture that really earned +Miss V8 805/6 her place in Brahman breed history.

modern influence In early 2019, we lost +Miss V8 805/6 at the age of twelve, which means this cow family is relatively new. At this writing, the second generation is entering prime production with an already well-established reputation for producing a legion of power bulls and females. This family is one of the most sought after in our herd, yet we rarely offer cattle from this group for sale because we keep so many of them. Mr. V8 146/8, +Miss V8 805/6’s son, is the breed's only three-time International Champion. Expectations for his first calf crop were very high, and yet, he exceeded all of our predictions and projections!

+Miss V8 495/5 "Rose"

origins If you asked Jim Williams to name his top three all-time favorite cows on the ranch, chances are he’d include +Miss V8 495/5. In fact, it was Jim who nicknamed her “Rose” because of her enviable, red-tinted coat. Born and raised on the V8 Ranch, she was indeed the rose of Boling, Texas for her entire life; everyone agreed she was the loveliest cow on the ranch. Rose passed away in the summer of 2012. Today, when we see her red-tinged great-granddaughter, +Miss V8 33/8, in the front pasture, we can't help but remember Rose.

ROSE COW FAMILY

roses are red People often ask us how Rose and her descendants got their interesting rusty red color. It's in their genes! Jim Williams explains: “In the 1970s, I was looking for an outcross line of cattle. Bubba Sartwelle and his family of Sartwelle Brahman Ranch had concentrated and linebred the Imperator bull in their herd for years. He gave us the pick of the cows on his ranch. We picked three dark pigmented cows. One of the cows was SBR Imperator Joy 349/4, Rose's maternal great granddam. She was the most intensely linebred cow on the ranch to Imperator, known for his dark (sometimes, even black) pigmentation. Rose’s paternal grandsire, (+)JDH Dakota Manso 599, was also known to sometimes sire red-pigmented cattle. When we mixed the Imperator bloodline on Rose’s dam side with that of (+) JDH Dakota Manso 599, who Jim also thought was the sire of some of the best females at J.D. Hudgins, the result was the unique red tinge we now call ‘V8 Rose Red’.”

THE MATRIARCHS

+Miss V8 410/6

origins A Louisiana girl, +Miss V8 410/6 was born at Watson Land and Cattle. At the time of her birth, us and the Watsons were constantly looking for powerful females to add to our partnership that has spanned decades. Mr. Hilton Watson said, "I have some good 800 calves over here," and he sent them our way to see if we thought they would be good enough to add to the partnership. 410 was near weaning age when she unloaded off the trailer with her recip mother. The first impression was memorable! Jim recalls, "She was a knockout when we first saw her. Daddy (Sloan) looked at me and said: ‘I don't think we have a better heifer here at V8 this year.’" That day, she was branded V8 and assigned number 410/6. Although never a national or international champion, +Miss V8 410/6 went on to become a highly decorated winner on our show string, and a family favorite. It was clear she had a promising future as a donor female and breeding piece. In 2020, at the age of 16, she passed peacefully from old age in the V8 front pasture.

the grand finale flush We were sure +Miss V8 410/6 would be an ideal cow to breed to Mr. V8 146/8. But because she was aging quickly, we only successfully flushed her to him twice, resulting in only four pregnancies total. The calves, two heifers and two bulls, were as impressive as we expected. V8 kept one of each, Miss V8 291/9 and Mr. V8 903/8, "Omega", whom we own in partnership with Triple H Cattle Company. origins

1993 INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION FEMALE 1992 NATIONAL CHAMPION FEMALE

Born in 1990, +Miss V8 165/4 is a prime example of the outstanding daughters produced by +Mr. V8 666/3. Her dam, +Lady Bevo 910, joined our herd from the Herman Beville Ranch in Florida. Mr. Beville’s cattle had a significant amount of Indu-Brazilian blood, and when the industry shifted to a preference for larger-framed animals, his cattle were right where they needed to be. Our good friend, Marcus Shackelford, was familiar (+)Mr. V8 202/3 with the Beville herd, and he had Sire: +MR. V8 666/3 identified 910 as its top heifer. +Miss V8 617/2 He and Sloan bought her for the V8 herd, and the rest is history! Bevo 951 +Miss V8 165/4 was selected as +LADY BEVO 910 Dam: Lady Bvo 697 the 1992 National Champion in Dallas, Texas, under Guatemalan breeder Neil Potter. In Houston, Judge Johnny Jeffcoat of Louisiana selected her as the 1993 International Champion. In total, +Miss V8 165/4 produced 55 offspring recorded by ABBA. A spinal injury during her early days as a donor female resulted in +Miss V8 165/4 living the rest of her life in isolation at V8 Ranch. For years, Jim and Luann's view from the window above their kitchen sink was of the majestic 165/4 in her pen. She weighed over 2,100 pounds at maturity.

THE MATRIARCHS

Miss V8 539/6

origins It’s common knowledge that our beloved family patriarch Sloan Williams simply could not resist a group of Brahman cattle for sale. This deal, in particular, has achieved legendary status on the ranch. In 2004, longtime V8 customer Bert Steindorf had a group of cows for sale that included several with the VM prefix. This prefix represented Vic and Buck Maspero, lifelong friends of Sloan from his days as a rodeo producer, and highly respected South Texan friends who used predominantly JDH and V8 bloodlines. Sloan purchased the group, which had been exposed to Mr. V8 736/5, a bull Jim had sold to Steindorf years prior. One dam, with a beautiful udder, was pregnant when the group came to V8. At weaning, the dam’s little fall-born heifer, 539/6, was selected by Sloan as a keeper out of appreciation for her mother’s features and admiration for the outcross of Maspero genetics. At this writing, 539/6 is sixteen years old, and a V8 ranch icon. The influence of her cow family will forever remind us of Sloan’s talent for wheeling, dealing, and spotting the best of the best.

pedigree and lineage Both Steindorf and the Masperos were “V8 collectors”, so you’ll find plenty of V8 breeding in 539/6. modern influence The impact of 539/6 has increased exponentially in the past few years as her daughters, granddaughters, and grandsons have entered prime production. Her flushes to El Rey and 380/6 produced key donors who have done just what we hoped for – like their mother, they have outproduced themselves at V8 Ranch.

our newest cow family Those who follow the V8 cow families closely will notice that 539/6 is a new addition to our group of matriarchs. Giving a cow matriarch status is not something we take lightly, yet, even a quick study of the modern movers and shakers in the herd confirms the tremendous footprint this tribe of cattle is making to earn its place in V8 history.

just the beginning In 2020, the Miss V8 539/6 cow family produced its first National Champion in Miss V8 203/9, "Dreamgirl." From birth, this heifer was a family favorite. Payton started calling her “Dreamgirl,” and the name stuck. We had high hopes for her future as a donor cow, especially after she set a new sales record in our July 2020 Made for Magic Online Sale when one-half interest sold to GKB Cattle. It felt like a fairytale ending (or beginning!) when, subsequently, Judge Doug Pierce selected her as National Champion as a calf.

THE MATRIARCHS

Miss V8 906/2

origins For years, in the late. ‘70s and early ‘80s, Jim traveled to Sugarland every two months for the weaning of the heifers. (Sugarland’s manager was a good friend who let Jim get first pick.) In the spring of 1980, Jim selected Ester of Sugarland 78, the dam of Miss V8 906/2. Born in 1982, 906/2 had only 5 daughters and 4 sons in her lifetime. She was never flushed, so all of her progeny are natural calves. It’s a common misconception that embryo transfer calves are superior to natural-born calves. Yet, Miss V8 906/2 is a matriarch who dispels that very notion. She is the foundation cow behind one of our biggest groups of cattle on the ranch, a group that features many show winners and top-selling animals. Like many greats who were overlooked in their lifetimes (think: Bach, VanGogh, Thoreau), Miss V8 906/2 is just now rising to fame for her incredible contribution to the breed as a non-flush cow. Her cow family is proof that the V8 Ranch “bench” is deep, and that even our non-flush females are superior producers.

THE MATRIARCHS

+JDH Ms Water Manso

origins +JDH Ms. Water Manso 239 was born in 2002 at J.D. Hudgins, Inc., and raised by Adrian and Karen (Mangum) Gubert, who branded the XL shoulder brand. When the Mangum division decided to sell their cows, of course, Sloan was there waiting. He could never resist a group of cows for sale, so imagine his excitement when it was a group of JDH cows from right down the road! Sloan picked up Jim, Luke, and Catherine and drove them to the "Herding Ground" pasture at JDH to size up the group, but he’d already made up his mind, and he could barely contain his excitement. Sloan bought the entire group of about 75 females. Bubba Hudgins had allowed Adrian and Karen to breed their cows to (+)JDH Sir Liberty Manso; he had even advised them on which cows he thought would mate best with the bull. The deal was that Bubba would get to keep any bull calves, and the Guberts would get the heifers. There were three daughters of Liberty in the group, and Water was our top pick. She came to V8 as a five-year-old cow and her first flush to +Mr. V8 287/5, "Superstroke" resulted in +Miss V8 138/7, one of our top donors today. But it was the flushes to +Mr. V8 380/6 that produced quality in volume and cemented her place in the history books at V8.

THE GOLDEN GIRLS

At V8 Ranch, we produce performing cattle, but that doesn’t mean we shy away from buying cattle that meet our standards. On the contrary! Our most famous cow family matriarchs, like Miss Priss and Claydesta 807U5, underscore the positive influence outside genetics bring to our program.

THE POWER OF THE OUTCROSS We’re continually searching for an ideal outcross female with the potential to be a foundation cow for the next great line of cattle. As such, in the past year, we’ve brought in replacement females from a handful of outside ranches, and in the future they may join these powerful donor females. Although the

following donor females (and their progeny) do not trace back to the core V8 cow families, don’t underestimate their importance; they are promising test pilots for future matriarch status. As with our breeding choices, we use our highly trained eyes to select for phenotype, first and foremost. Then, we consider pedigree and/or any unique traits such as color, disposition or being polled. When mated with V8’s strong, award-winning sires, we’re confident that these cows will also make magic.

HERD SIRES

"We believe in sharing our genetics as a way to contribute to the entire breed's future." - JIM WILLIAMS

104 — V8 RANCH HERD REFERENCE

COW MAGIC + BULL MAGIC = THE KEY TO SUCCESS We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: “The magic is in the cows.” Behind every one of our great V8 Brahman Bulls, there is a great Brahman cow. We’re proud of their pedigree. And we work hard to uphold our reputation as a top seedstock provider of high-performing, structurally sound Brahman bulls. Bred to represent the best of both worlds, each bull comes with documented performance and breeding guarantees. These bulls are able to handle heat and drought conditions, yet they still have desirable carcass traits. They are strong, yet gentle. And, they are muscular, yet still able to move well thanks to our focus on structural quality. Although we have established a tradition of selecting a Bull of the Year that we expect to impact the Brahman breed, we don’t do so to build an image of just one bull. All of our bulls are part of a breeding program and they are designed to complement one another in both pedigree and appearance. Breeding truly superior livestock is no accident. Genuinely outstanding genetic contributors can nearly always be predicted, but you have to start with known qualities and reliable material. Our program is designed to grow, develop, and adapt to the constantly changing industry. This results in progeny that improve with each generation. It’s why we’re passionate about selling semen on every bull in our battery (unless limited by inventory). It’s also why we make it a point to have sons and daughters from our top bulls available for purchase at every sale. We believe in sharing our genetics as a way to contribute to the entire breed's future. Never before has it been more important to properly select the herd bull you’ll use on your cows. There is one overriding constant, both in the pasture and in intelligent AI and ET programs - it takes the use of outstanding herd bulls to accomplish herd and breed improvements. In short, exceptional herd sires are essential to any program’s success.

SOMETIMES, LESS IS MORE To avoid redundancy, most V8 bulls are featured with their respective cow families and do not re-appear in this section or our reference guide. Please review the guide in its entirety to see our full collection of herd sires.

He has many exceptional characteristics including masculinity, eye appeal, a long, straight top line and level hip, good thickness and muscle, and excellent American Brahman breed character.

pedigree and lineage

BULL OF THE YEAR

322/8 is sired by +Mr. V8 380/6, who is known for his power and consistency, and out of +Miss V8 33/8 of the Rose cow family, a cow family that has been a mainstay here for decades. The picture of femininity, +Miss V8 33/8, is a beautiful red-tinged, long-bodied daughter of +Mr. V8 191/7. But don’t let her beauty fool you; she also possesses impressive muscle mass and depth of body. Phenotypically, she is one of V8’s most impressive cows, embodying the ideal the Williams family strives for.

poised for success Mr. V8 322/8, is balanced and stylish, with the length of body you’d expect from his dam, but the power and masculinity of his sire. He has captured the limelight since his first time in the showring. In addition to his National Championship, 322/8 was a two-time division winner at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (the International Brahman Show.) V8 Ranch named our first Bull of the Year in 2016, prior to the Houston show. Each year’s selection is made by a family consensus as to which bull is the most promising and likely to join rank with the family’s long line of legendary sires.

INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION

BULL OF THE YEAR

"Sloan"

BW: 88 POUNDS • DOB: JANUARY 18, 2017 Mr. V8 146/8, “Sloan” entered the Brahman scene with a bang, being named International Champion as a calf in 2018 and coming back again in 2019 to win the same title. In 2020, he won the show a third time, becoming the first Brahman bull to accomplish this feat. This son of +Mr. V8 458/7 is poised to make a tremendous impact in the V8 herd, especially when crossed with our 380 and 191 daughters. 146/8 is the bull we look towards for the future of V8 Ranch. He brings thickness and muscle, power for days, soundness, and excellent breed character all while maintaining acceptable birth weights on his calves.

His dam, +Miss V8 805/6 is one of our “super cows” at V8; her crosses with +Mr. V8 380/6 (resulting in the National Champion Miss V8 293/8) and +Mr. V8 458/7 are cemented in V8 history as some of our best matings. He’s a threetime International Champion, yet we feel the best is yet to come as his true impact is seen in our herd and throughout the Brahman breed.

In his first calf crop at V8, he exceeded all expectations. His calves are consistently high quality, with excellent feet and legs, muscle, thickness, and style. After years without a name, in early 2021, we decided to name him after our beloved patriarch, Sloan Williams, who like Mr. V8 146/8, was the best of the best.

RESERVE INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION

A outstanding Brahman herd bull who sires very long bodied, up-headed, muscular, thick, eye appealing, and gentle calves. He is the sire of the 2017 Houston Grand Champion Brahman Bull, Mr. V8 604/7, “Man of Steel” and our past Bull of the Year, Mr. V8 933/7 "Yeti." He is a great choice to breed to daughters of +Mr. V8 380/6 and he compliments them well. Daughters of 191/7 are in high demand. Heifers in our past V8 sales have sold for $70,250 (Miss V8 790/8 in 2018) and $62,500 (Miss V8 275/9 in 2020.) We are now seeing many of his daughters in peak production here at the ranch who have become top donor females, including the dam of Mr. V8 322/8, +Miss V8 33/8.

His mother, +Miss V8 464/6 was both an International Champion Female and a World Brahman Congress Champion Female.

He is moderate framed with impressive EPD’s: 7 traits rank in the top 9%, almost unheard of. He has tremendous bone, balance, and muscle with a very desirable sheath, and yet, with a Calving Ease Direct EPD of 5.73 (top 7%) we are comfortable using him on our heifers (he’s the natural service sire at V8’s show barn) to sire cattle with performance, muscle, show ring potential, and look. His sire, JDH Sir Compian Manso (BW EPD: -1.3) makes him an outcross option, and as an added bonus, his dam is a full sister to Miss V8 49/8, the dam of Mr. V8 562/8, “Guardian,” the 2020 International Calf Champion Bull.

BEYOND THE BRAND

THE ELITE RANCH OF CHAMPIONS

V8 Ranch is one of the most celebrated ranches in Brahman breed history, being the breeder of more National Grand Champions, International Grand Champions, and All American Grand Champions than any other ranch since ABBA's formation in 1924. This is a tremendous accomplishment in and of itself, but even more remarkable when you take into account that V8 Ranch did not win our first National Championship until 1976 and our first International Championship until 1982. While we are the breeder of these champions, often it has been our customers who enjoyed the spotlight of success with their Mr. or Miss V8s. Several of our champions are cattle that

we have sold to fellow breeders, and we are just as delighted as if we were the ones at the halter on that day. It is our absolute honor that cattle carrying the V8 brand are a part of other breeders' championship stories. The show ring is not our first priority, but it is a testament to the quality of our program, our breeding, and our vision for excellence. We enjoy competitive livestock shows and use the show ring to showcase our cattle to the public to give them an example of the quality of cattle we have for sale back at the ranch. Each year, we select the top Brahman cattle from our herd to enter the V8 show string to be exhibited at the National Brahman Show, the Houston Livestock Show, and other select fairs and expositions.

INTRODUCING THE V8 STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE ART AND SCIENCE: THE ULTIMATE SUPERBLEND™ Animal husbandry is also known as animal science. We’re proud that the practice of breeding and raising livestock is rightfully recognized as a scientific discipline. But the word ‘science’ denotes a cold, impartial, datadriven approach that doesn’t pay justice to the heart – and the art – of cattle breeding. Just like how a great chef is more than a ‘food scientist’, a talented breeder brings a passion, instinct, and unique eye to his work that goes beyond genetics and performance record data. To breed great cattle, it takes a blend of both art and science, which is why our main focus is on phenotype. Our very own cattle master, Jim Williams, said it best with this quote in 1988:

“The day may come when the art of breeding cattle can be automated, but today, the eye of the master still plays an important role in pedigreed livestock.” — Jim Williams Over 30 years later, those words still ring true. Technology and automation have their place, but they cannot replace a well-trained rancher’s discerning observation and judgment. At V8 Ranch, we don’t just raise cattle; we’ve raised eight generations of ranchers who, from an early age, have been – and still are – continually mentored by a master

on how to visually select cattle; how to correct the faults in one animal with the strengths of another; and, how to breed superior bulls and females with the special X (or dare we say, V8?) factor that cannot be replicated with mere data analysis and number-crunching. Yes, we monitor and measure cattle from conception through their productive life. Yes, we analyze genetics to achieve maximum performance. But we also, measure our animals on a subjective basis. We don’t just exhibit our production for promotion, we exhibit to see where they stand within the breed. The goal is always to ensure that whether they remain in our herd, or serve as seedstock for someone else, our cattle are superior in every possible way. First and foremost, great chefs, artists, designers – and, yes, ranchers – know the ins and outs of their craft. Then, they use that knowledge to work with a signature passion and style. Ultimately, it is the public who sets the value of what they produce. We are honored that industry experts, judges, and our customers all appreciate and value the cattle we produce using our uncompromising V8 Standards of Excellence. To better understand the V8 Standard of Excellence, we asked Jim Williams to explain what he looks for when making breeding selections to produce the ideal V8 Brahman cow or bull. His selection criteria follows.

THE V8 STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

The V8 Standards of Excellence don’t end with the traits we look for in the preceding diagrams, we also assess cattle for maturity, overall structure, movement, and pigmentation. At V8, we raise cattle with performance in the long run. We embrace the youthful appearance of our young calves knowing they will gain more thickness and muscle with maturity. As calves, their heights and weights may record lower than our competitors, but they have the performance they need at maturity. Typically, too much maturity in a juvenile calf indicates that the animal doesn’t have long-term growth potential. V8 Ranch has strong visual parameters for what cattle should look like during each monthly growth stage. For example, one of our National Champion Females, Miss V8 425/5, got the gate at her first show because she didn’t show as much condition and maturity as the others in her class. Two years later, at maturity, she was the National Grand Champion in Dallas.

MATURITY

It takes years of experience, and a trained eye, to project how cattle are going to grow. Over time, we have learned which calves will get better as they age, and which ones will work best when young, but lack competitive edge as they mature. Consider two of our sires who were full brothers: Mr. V8 191/7 and Mr. V8 194/7. Both bulls were outstanding, but different in type. As calves, 194/7 would win the class and 191/7 would stand about fourth. But at 18 months, the trend reversed. Whereas 191/7 was overpowering as a mature bull and practically unbeatable, 194/7 consistently placed third or fourth in the class because with his quicker maturing pattern, he had a more moderate size at maturity. Conversely, Mr. V8 191/7 was a very impressive mature bull; the last time we showed him in Houston, he was named Reserve International Champion.

THE V8 STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

"The #1 selection criterion should always be quality above all else. Don’t sacrifice on quality."

STRUCTURE AND MOVEMENT

- JIM WILLIAMS

At V8 Ranch, we place a strong emphasis on structural correctness and integrity. We want our cattle to walk and travel well with a good length of stride. When viewed while walking away from a judge, an animal should show base width. Observable base width in a traveling animal indicates natural thickness and muscle. When viewed while approaching, cattle should be correct on their front legs, too. Jim elaborates, “A slight outward toeing out doesn’t bother me too much; I am far more critical about toeing in because cattle that are pigeon-toed tend to be out at the knee as well as the shoulders.” Finally, when traveling, cattle should also demonstrate a smooth length of stride while maintaining a level top and spine. Short strides indicate structural problems that interfere with longevity. When an animal is on the move, its topline should stay level and not raise up or roach in the middle. Roaching is indicative of a structure problem originating at the feet and legs. A steep rump usually indicates a lower pin setting, and causes cattle to be sickle hocked and travel with their feet up under their body. Poorly structured animals do not have durability and, therefore, have no place in our pastures or yours.

Mr. V8 146/8 has a long stride and keeps a level topline while walking.

At V8, we view pigmentation like ice cream flavors – everybody has a different preference (white, red-tinged, or dark), but it’s all ice cream. And we care less about the flavor than about the quality of the ice cream. In other words, quality is our #1 selection criteria. Our pigmentation preference is for a moderately colored animal with a dark black nose and a good, black long switch. Here is what we don’t find acceptable: a light-colored nose (also called a split nose), which has white pigmentation up the middle of the nose; white eyelashes; white at the top of the tail switch that fades into the black switch. Once lighter pigmentation issues are eliminated, personal preference comes into play. At V8, much of our herd has darker pigment, because we like that coloring. Red spots or a little bit of speckling are to be expected with darker pigmented cattle sometimes; these variations are part of that darker color pattern. Also, if white pigmentation is the preferred color, you can easily cross darker pigmented animals to a snow white bull that can keep the offspring white. +JDH Sir Avery Manso never sired a dark pigmented calf. All white with a few light red areas on their head and back. Ultimately, quality matters more to us than pigmentation variation.

PIGMENT

New technologies, DNA markers, genomics – there are a lot of exciting developments defining the future of Brahman breeding. But it doesn’t change the need to breed a durable animal that is sound on its feet and legs and able to live a long life in the pasture. Thus far, there are no scientific markers for identifiable traits like feet and legs. There is an EPD for ‘stayability’, but that doesn’t distill “sound” or “not sound” into a simple scientific question. The goal may be to get more economical cattle that require less maintenance, but the process is not based on absolutes. Some big cattle are easy-fleshing; so are some little cattle. Some little cattle are hard-keeping; so are some big cattle. On the whole, large-framed cattle aren’t as easy-doing in the pasture, and smaller-framed cattle don’t have as much performance about them. We believe in building a herd with moderate cattle (and some just a tick larger than moderate), because nature keeps pulling the cattle back down to a smaller frame. That one larger-framed animal can change a generation by improving the frame score one level. Just stay with quality!

FOR BEING A V8 VIP

I

f you’re reading these words, then you’ve probably already read much of the text featured in this Herd Reference Guide. Thank you for your interest in our livestock, our ranch, and our history. We consider our customers and loyal fans to be V8 VIPs, and we do our best to spoil them every chance we get. If you’d also like first dibs at stall party prices, special gifts, and invitations to our special events and parties, we encourage you to join our mailing list at v8ranchvip.com. An animal from V8 is more than just a Brahman — V8 cattle represent an original bloodline that now roams four hemispheres. It reflects the passionate men and women who have devoted their lives to creating a superior Brahman breeding process and elevation program. Our family stakes its entire reputation on each head of cattle we deem worthy of the V8 brand. It symbolizes our guarantee, our commitment, and our promise of integrity. Sure, there are quicker, cheaper ways to bring cattle to market, but that's not what we're about. In an evergrowing and competitive beef industry, V8 Ranch has always gone out of it's way to occupy a spot unto ourselves. It takes extra effort to breed, raise — and yes, even to buy — our cattle, but we think it's well worth it. Our customers think so too. Owning a V8 makes you a part of the extended V8 Ranch Family, and that means much more than just a bill of sale or a registration paper. We open our homes and our hearts with the hope that clients leave our ranch as friends. Our goal is to not only create opportunities to buy, but more importantly, opportunities to connect.
